Boolean product polynomials and Schur-positivity
We study a family of symmetric polynomials that we refer to as the Boolean product polynomials. The motivation for studying these polynomials stems from the computation of the characteristic polynomial of the real matroid spanned by the nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose coordinates are either $0$ or $1$. To this end, one approach is to compute the zeros of the Boolean product polynomials over finite fields. The zero loci of these polynomials cut out hyperplane arrangements known as resonance arrangements, which show up in the context of double Hurwitz polynomials. By relating the Boolean product polynomials to certain total Chern classes of vector bundles, we establish their Schur-positivity by appealing to a result of Pragacz relying on earlier work on numerical positivity by Fulton-Lazarsfeld. Subsequently, we study a two-alphabet version of these polynomials from the viewpoint of Schur-positivity. As a special case of these polynomials, we recover symmetric functions first studied by Désarménien and Wachs in the context of descents in derangements.
How to decompose a permutation into a pair of labeled Dyck paths by playing a game

We give a bijection between permutations of length 2n and certain pairs of Dyck paths with labels on the down steps. The bijection arises from a game in which two players alternate selecting from a set of 2n items: the permutation encodes the players' preference ordering of the items, and the Dyck paths encode the order in which items are selected under optimal play. We enumerate permutations by certain statistics, AA inversions and BB inversions, which have natural interpretations in terms of the game. We give new proofs of classical identities such as \sum_p \prod_{i=1}^n q^{h_i -1} [h_i]_q = [1]_q [3]_q ... [2n-1]_q where the sum is over all Dyck paths p of length 2n, and the h_i are the heights of the down steps of p.
Bandwidth of the product of paths of the same length

In this note we give a numerical expression for the bandwidth $bw(P_{n}^{d})$ of the $d$-product of a path with $n$ edges, $P_{n}^{d}$. We prove that this bandwidth is given by the sum of certain multinomial coefficients. We also show that $bw(P_{n}^{d})$ is bounded above and below by the largest coefficient in the expansion of $(1+x+...+x^{n})^{k}$, with $k\in{d,d+1}$. Moreover, we compare the asymptotic behavior of $bw(P_{n}^{d})$ with the bandwidth of the labeling obtained by ordering the vertices of $P_{n}^{d}$ in lexicographic order.

We construct many nonpolytopal nonsimplicial Gorenstein* meet semi-lattices with nonnegative toric g-vector, supporting a conjecture of Stanley. These are formed as Bier spheres over the face posets of multiplexes, polytopes constructed by Bisztriczky as generalizations of simplices.

We associate a quasisymmetric function to any Bruhat interval in a general Coxeter group. This association can be seen to be a morphism of Hopf algebras to the subalgebra of all peak functions, leading to an extension of the cd-index of convex polytopes. We show how the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the Bruhat interval can be expressed in terms of this complete cd-index and otherwise explicit combinatorially defined polynomials. In particular, we obtain the simplest closed formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials that holds in complete generality.

Via duality of Hopf algebras, there is a direct association between peak quasisymmetric functions and enumeration of chains in Eulerian posets. We study this association explicitly, showing that the notion of $\cd$-index, long studied in the context of convex polytopes and Eulerian posets, arises as the dual basis to a natural basis of peak quasisymmetric functions introduced by Stembridge. Thus Eulerian posets having a nonnegative $\cd$-index (for example, face lattices of convex polytopes) correspond to peak quasisymmetric functions having a nonnegative representation in terms of this basis. We diagonalize the operator that associates the basis of descent sets for all quasisymmetric functions to that of peak sets for the algebra of peak functions, and study the $g$-polynomial for Eulerian posets as an algebra homomorphism.
A quasisymmetric function for matroids

A new isomorphism invariant of matroids is introduced, in the form of a quasisymmetric function. This invariant (1) defines a Hopf morphism from the Hopf algebra of matroids to the quasisymmetric functions, which is surjective if one uses rational coefficients, (2) is a multivariate generating function for integer weight vectors that give minimum total weight to a unique base of the matroid, (3) is equivalent, via the Hopf antipode, to a generating function for integer weight vectors which keeps track of how many bases minimize the total weight, (4) behaves simply under matroid duality, (5) has a simple expansion in terms of P-partition enumerators, and (6) is a valuation on decompositions of matroid base polytopes.
This last property leads to an interesting application: it can sometimes be used to prove that a matroid base polytope has no decompositions into smaller matroid base polytopes. Existence of such decompositions is a subtle issue arising in work of Lafforgue, where lack of such a decomposition implies the matroid has only a finite number of realizations up to projective equivalence.

We construct CW spheres from the lattices that arise as the closed sets of a convex closure, the meet-distributive lattices. These spheres are nearly polytopal, in the sense that their barycentric subdivisions are simplicial polytopes. The complete information on the numbers of faces and chains of faces in these spheres can be obtained from the defining lattices in a manner analogous to the relation between arrangements of hyperplanes and their underlying geometric intersection lattices.
Decomposable compositions, symmetric quasisymmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions

We define an equivalence relation on integer compositions and show that two ribbon Schur functions are identical if and only if their defining compositions are equivalent in this sense. This equivalence is completely determined by means of a factorization for compositions: equivalent compositions have factorizations that differ only by reversing some of the terms. As an application, we can derive identities on certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Finally, we consider the cone of symmetric functions having a nonnnegative representation in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric basis. We show the Schur functions are among the extremes of this cone and conjecture its facets are in bijection with the equivalence classes of compositions.
