Metrics on permutations with the same descent set
Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Given a permutation $σ=σ_1σ_2 \cdots σ_n \in S_n$, we say it has a descent at index $i$ if $σ_i>σ_{i+1}$. Let $\mathcal{D}(σ)$ be the set of all descents of $σ$ and define $\mathcal{D}(S;n)=\{σ\in S_n\, | \,\mathcal{D}(σ)=S\}$. We study the Hamming metric and $\ell_\infty$-metric on the sets $\mathcal{D}(S;n)$ for all possible nonempty $S\subset[n-1]$ to determine the maximum possible value that these metrics can achieve when restricted to these subsets.
Hypergraphs of girth 5 and 6 and coding theory
In this paper, we study the maximum number of edges in an $N$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with girth $g$ where $g \in \{5,6 \}$. Writing $\textrm{ex}_r ( N, \mathcal{C}_{<g} )$ for this maximum, it is shown that $\textrm{ex}_r ( N , \mathcal{C}_{ < 5} ) = Ω_r ( N^{3/2 - o(1)} )$ for $r \in \{4,5,6 \}$. We address an unproved claim from [31] asserting a technique of Ruzsa can be used to show that this lower bound holds for all $r \geq 3$. We carefully explain one of the main obstacles that was overlooked at the time the claim from [31] was made, and show that this obstacle can be overcome when $r\in \{4,5,6\}$. We use constructions from coding theory to prove nontrivial lower bounds that hold for all $r \geq 3$. Finally, we use a recent result of Conlon, Fox, Sudakov, and Zhao to show that the sphere packing bound from coding theory may be improved when upper bounding the size of linear $q$-ary codes of distance $6$.
Metrics on permutations with the same peak set
Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on the set $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Given a permutation $σ=σ_1σ_2 \cdots σ_n \in S_n$, we say it has a peak at index $i$ if $σ_{i-1}<σ_i>σ_{i+1}$. Let $\text{Peak}(σ)$ be the set of all peaks of $σ$ and define $P(S;n)=\{σ\in S_n\, | \,\text{Peak}(σ)=S\}$. In this paper we study the Hamming metric, $\ell_\infty$-metric, and Kendall-Tau metric on the sets $P(S;n)$ for all possible $S$, and determine the minimum and maximum possible values that these metrics can attain in these subsets of $S_n$.
Spectral Radii of Arithmetical Structures on Cycle Graphs
Let $G$ be a finite, connected graph. An arithmetical structure on $G$ is a pair of positive integer-valued vectors $(\mathbf{d},\mathbf{r})$ such that $(\text{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A_G)\cdot \mathbf{r}=\textbf{0},$ where the entries of $\mathbf{r}$ have $\gcd$ 1 and $A_G$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this article we find the arithmetical structures that maximize and minimize the spectral radius of $(\text{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A_G)$ among all arithmetical structures on the cycle graph $\mathcal{C}_n.$

This paper investigates the design and application of write-once memory (WOM) codes for flash memory storage. Using ideas from Merkx ('84), we present a construction of WOM codes based on finite Euclidean geometries over $\mathbb{F}_2$. This construction yields WOM codes with new parameters and provides insight into the criterion that incidence structures should satisfy to give rise to good codes. We also analyze methods of adapting binary WOM codes for use on multilevel flash cells. In particular, we give two strategies based on different rewrite objectives. A brief discussion of the average-write performance of these strategies, as well as concatenation methods for WOM codes is also provided.
