Determinantal representations of alternating run polynomials
Based on a determinantal formula for the higher derivative of a quotient of two functions, we first present the determinantal expressions of Eulerian polynomials and Andre polynomials. In particular, we discover that the Euler number (number of alternating permutations) can be expressed as a lower Hessenberg determinant. We then investigate the determinantal representations of the up-down run polynomials and the types A and B alternating run polynomials. As applications, we deduce several new recurrence relations, which imply the multiplicity of -1 in these three kinds of polynomials. And then, we provide two determinantal representations for the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. In particular, we discover a close connection between the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations and the type B Eulerian polynomials.
Distribution of maxima and minima statistics on alternating permutations, Springer numbers, and avoidance of flat POPs
In this paper, we find distributions of the left-to-right maxima, right-to-left maxima, left-to-right minima and right-to-left-minima statistics on up-down and down-up permutations of even and odd lengths. For instance, we show that the distribution of right-to-left maxima on up-down permutations of even length is given by $(\sec (t))^{q}$. We also derive the joint distribution of the maxima (resp., minima) statistics. To accomplish this, we generalize a result of Kitaev and Remmel by deriving joint distributions involving non-maxima (resp., non-minima) statistics. Consequently, we refine classic enumeration results of André by introducing new $q$-analogues and $(p,q)$-analogues for the number of alternating permutations.
Additionally, we verify Callan's conjecture (2012) that the number of up-down permutations of even length fixed by reverse and complement equals the Springer numbers, thereby offering another combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. Furthermore, we propose two $q$-analogues and a $(p,q)$-analogue of the Springer numbers. Lastly, we enumerate alternating permutations that avoid certain flat partially ordered patterns (POPs), where the only minimum or maximum elements are labeled by the largest or smallest numbers.
Real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra
This paper investigates the rational Betti numbers of real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra. We consider the poset topology of a specific poset induced from a chordal building set, and show its EL-shellability. Based on this, we present an explicit description using alternating $\mathcal{B}$-permutations for a chordal building set $\mathcal{B}$, transforming the computing Betti numbers into a counting problem. This approach allows us to compute the $a$-number of a finite simple graph through permutation counting when the graph is chordal. In addition, we provide detailed computations for specific cases such as real Hochschild varieties corresponding to Hochschild polytopes.
Zig-zag Eulerian polynomials

For any finite partially ordered set $P$, the $P$-Eulerian polynomial is the generating function for the descent number over the set of linear extensions of $P$, and is closely related to the order polynomial of $P$ arising in the theory of $P$-partitions. Here we study the $P$-Eulerian polynomial where $P$ is a naturally labeled zig-zag poset; we call these zig-zag Eulerian polynomials. A result of Brändén implies that these polynomials are gamma-nonnegative, and hence their coefficients are symmetric and unimodal. The zig-zag Eulerian polynomials and the associated order polynomials have appeared fleetingly in the literature in a wide variety of contexts$\unicode{x2014}$e.g., in the study of polytopes, magic labelings of graphs, and Kekulé structures$\unicode{x2014}$but they do not appear to have been studied systematically.
In this paper, we use a "relaxed" version of $P$-partitions to both survey and unify results. Our technique shows that the zig-zag Eulerian polynomials also capture the distribution of "big returns" over the set of (up-down) alternating permutations, as first observed by Coons and Sullivant. We develop recurrences for refined versions of the relevant generating functions, which evoke similarities to recurrences for the classical Eulerian polynomials. We conclude with a literature survey and open questions.
Eulerian Polynomials for Digraphs
Given an $n$-vertex digraph $D$ and a labeling $σ:V(D)\to [n]$, we say that an arc $u\to v$ of $D$ is a descent of $σ$ if $σ(u)>σ(v)$. Foata and Zeilberger introduced a generating function $A_D(t)$ for labelings of $D$ weighted by descents, which simultaneously generalizes both Eulerian polynomials and Mahonian polynomials. Motivated by work of Kalai, we look at problems related to $-1$ evaluations of $A_D(t)$. In particular, we give a combinatorial interpretation of $|A_D(-1)|$ in terms of "generalized alternating permutations" whenever the underlying graph of $D$ is bipartite.

Given a permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$, define its inverse statistic $\operatorname{ist}$ by $\operatorname{ist}(π):=\operatorname{st}(π^{-1})$. We give a general approach, based on the theory of symmetric functions, for finding the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ whenever $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ are descent statistics: permutation statistics that depend only on the descent composition. We apply this method to a number of descent statistics, including the descent number, the peak number, the left peak number, the number of up-down runs, and the major index. Perhaps surprisingly, in many cases the polynomial giving the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{ist}_{2}$ can be expressed as a simple sum involving products of the polynomials giving the (individual) distributions of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$. Our work leads to a rederivation of Stanley's generating function for doubly alternating permutations, as well as several conjectures concerning real-rootedness and $γ$-positivity.

In the context of the shuffle theorem, many classical integer sequences appear with a natural refinement by two statistics $q$ and $t$: for example the Catalan and Schröder numbers. In particular, the bigraded Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics is a $q,t$-analog of $(n+1)^{n-1}$ (and can be written in terms of symmetric functions via the nabla operator). The motivation for this work is the observation that at $q=-1$, this $q,t$-analog becomes a $t$-analog of Euler numbers, a famous integer sequence that counts alternating permutations. We prove this observation via a more general statement, that involves the Delta operator on symmetric functions (on one side), and new combinatorial statistics on permutations involving peaks and valleys (on the other side). An important tool are the schedule numbers of a parking function first introduced by Hicks; and expanded upon by Haglund and Sergel. Other empirical observation suggest that nonnegativity at $q=-1$ holds in far greater generality.

Let $\mathcal{S}_n(π)$ (resp. $\mathcal{I}_n(π)$ and $\mathcal{AI}_n(π)$) denote the set of permutations (resp. involutions and alternating involutions) of length $n$ which avoid the permutation pattern $π$. For $k,m\geq 1$, Backelin-West-Xin proved that $|\mathcal{S}_n(12\cdots kτ)|= |\mathcal{S}_n(k\cdots 21τ)|$ by establishing a bijection between these two sets, where $τ= τ_1τ_2\cdots τ_m$ is an arbitrary permutation of $k+1,k+2,\ldots,k+m$. The result has been extended to involutions by Bousquet-Mélou and Steingrímsson and to alternating permutations by the first author. In this paper, we shall establish a peak set preserving bijection between $\mathcal{I}_n(123τ)$ and $\mathcal{I}_n(321τ)$ via transversals, matchings, oscillating tableaux and pairs of noncrossing Dyck paths as intermediate structures. Our result is a refinement of the result of Bousquet-Mélou and Steingrímsson for the case when $k=3$. As an application, we show bijectively that $|\mathcal{AI}_n(123τ)| = |\mathcal{AI}_n(321τ)|$, confirming a recent conjecture of Barnabei-Bonetti-Castronuovo-Silimbani. Furthmore, some conjectured equalities posed by Barnabei-Bonetti-Castronuovo-Silimbani concerning pattern avoiding alternating involutions are also proved.
Euler numbers and diametral paths in Fibonacci cubes, Lucas cubes and Alternate Lucas cubes
The diameter of a graph is the maximum distance between pairs of vertices in the graph. A pair of vertices whose distance is equal to its diameter are called diametrically opposite vertices. The collection of shortest paths between diametrically opposite vertices are referred as diametral paths. In this work, we enumerate the number of diametral paths for Fibonacci cubes, Lucas cubes and Alternate Lucas cubes. We present bijective proofs that show that these numbers are related to alternating permutations and are enumerated by Euler numbers.

We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.

We study a subset of permutations, where entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 2$. We show that when also imposing the classical 132- or 213-avoidance restriction on the permutations, we recover the Fuss--Catalan numbers and some special cases of the Raney numbers.
Surprisingly, an analogous statement also holds when we impose the mod $k$ restriction on a Catalan family of subexcedant functions.
Finally, we completely enumerate all combinations of mod-$k$-alternating permutations, avoiding two patterns of length 3. This is analogous to the systematic study by Simion and Schmidt, of permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.

For the calculation of Springer numbers (of root systems) of type $B_n$ and $D_n$, Arnold introduced a signed analogue of alternating permutations, called $β_n$-snakes, and derived recurrence relations for enumerating the $β_n$-snakes starting with $k$. The results are presented in the form of double triangular arrays ($v_{n,k}$) of integers, $1\le |k|\le n$. An Arnold family is a sequence of sets of such objects as $β_n$-snakes that are counted by $(v_{n,k})$. As a refinement of Arnold's result, we give analogous arrays of polynomials, defined by recurrence, for the calculation of the polynomials associated with successive derivatives of $\tan x$ and $\sec x$, established by Hoffman. Moreover, we provide some new Arnold families of combinatorial objects that realize the polynomial arrays, which are signed variants of André permutations and Simsun permutations.

A Parity Alternating Permutation of the set $[n] = \{1, 2,\ldots, n\}$ is a permutation with even and odd entries alternatively. We deal with parity alternating permutations having an odd entry in the first position, PAPs. We study the numbers that count the PAPs with even as well as odd parity. We also study a subclass of PAPs being derangements as well, Parity Alternating Derangements (PADs). Moreover, by considering the parity of these PADs we look into their statistical property of excedance.

Two permutations $(x_1,\dots,x_w)$ and $(y_1,\dots,y_w)$ are weakly similar if $x_i<x_{i+1}$ if and only if $y_i<y_{i+1}$ for all $1\leqslant i \leqslant w$. Let $π$ be a permutation of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dots, n\}$ and let $wt(π)$ denote the largest integer $w$ such that $π$ contains a pair of disjoint weakly similar sub-permutations (called weak twins) of length $w$. Finally, let $wt(n)$ denote the minimum of $wt(π)$ over all permutations $π$ of $[n]$. Clearly, $wt(n)\le n/2$. In this paper we show that $\tfrac n{12}\le wt(n)\le\tfrac n2-Ω(n^{1/3})$.
We also study a variant of this problem. Let us say that $π'=(π(i_1),...,π(i_j))$, $i_1<\cdots<i_j$, is an alternating (or up-and-down) sub-permutation of $π$ if $π(i_1)>π(i_2)<π(i_3)>...$ or $π(i_1)<π(i_2)>π(i_3)<...$. Let $Π_n$ be a random permutation selected uniformly from all $n!$ permutations of $[n]$. It is known that the length of a longest alternating permutation in $Π_n$ is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) close to $2n/3$. We study the maximum length $α(n)$ of a pair of disjoint alternating sub-permutations in $Π_n$ and show that there are two constants $1/3<c_1<c_2<1/2$ such that a.a.s. $c_1n\le α(n)\le c_2n$.
In addition, we show that the alternating shape is the most popular among all permutations of a given length.

The alternating-runs polynomial enumerates alternating runs in the symmetric group. There are three formulae for the number of permutations, $R_{n,k}$ in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with $k$ alternating runs, but all of them are complicated. We show that when enumerated with sign taken into account, one gets a {\it neat formula}. As a consequence, we get a near refinement of a result of Wilf on the exponent of $(1+t)$ when it divides the alternating-runs polynomial in the alternating group $\mathcal{A}_n$. Other applications include a moment-type identity and enumeration of alternating permutations in $\mathcal{A}_n$. Similar results are obtained for the type B and type D Coxeter groups.

The Euler number $E_n$ (resp. Entringer number $E_{n,k}$) enumerates the alternating (down-up) permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ (resp. starting with $k$). The Springer number $S_n$ (resp. Arnold number $S_{n,k}$) enumerates the type $B$ alternating permutations (resp. starting with $k$). In this paper, using bijections we first derive the counterparts in {\em André permutations} and {\em Simsun permutations} for the Entringer numbers $(E_{n,k})$, and then the counterparts in {\em signed André permutations} and {\em type $B$ increasing 1-2 trees} for the Arnold numbers $(S_{n,k})$.
Troupes, Cumulants, and Stack-Sorting

Several sequences of free cumulants that count binary plane trees correspond to sequences of classical cumulants that count the decreasing versions of the same trees. Using two new operations on colored binary plane trees that we call insertion and decomposition, we prove that this surprising phenomenon holds for families of trees that we call troupes. We give a simple characterization of troupes, which provide a broad framework for generalizing several of the results known about West's stack-sorting map $s$. Indeed, we give new proofs of some of the main techniques that have been developed for understanding $s$; these new proofs are far more conceptual than the original ones, explain how the objects called valid hook configurations arise naturally, and generalize to troupes. For $t\in\{2,3\}$, we enumerate $t$-stack-sortable alternating permutations of odd length and $t$-stack-sortable permutations whose descents are all peaks.
The unexpected connection between troupes and cumulants provides a powerful new tool for analyzing the stack-sorting map that hinges on free probability theory. We give numerous applications of this method. For example, we show that if $σ\in S_{n-1}$ is chosen uniformly at random, then the expected value of $\text{des}(s(σ))+1$ is \[\left(3-\sum_{j=0}^n\frac{1}{j!}\right)n.\] Furthermore, the variance of $\text{des}(s(σ))+1$ is asymptotically $(2+2e-e^2)n$. We obtain similar results concerning the expected number of descents of postorder readings of decreasing colored binary plane trees. We also obtain improved estimates for $|s(S_n)|$ and an improved lower bound for the degree of noninvertibility of $s$. We give two novel formulas that convert from free to classical cumulants. The first is given by a sum over noncrossing partitions, and the second is given by a sum over $231$-avoiding valid hook configurations. We pose several open problems.

In order to better understand the structure of closed collections of reversible gates, we investigate the lattice of closed sets and the maximal members of this lattice. In this note, we find the maximal closed sets over a finite alphabet. We find that for odd sized alphabets, there are a finite number of maximal closed sets, while for the even case we have a countable infinity, almost all of which are related to an alternating permutations. We then extend to other forms of closure for reversible gates, ancilla and borrow closure. Here we find some structural results, including some examples of maximal closed sets.

The non-convexity of a smooth and compact connected component of a real algebraic plane curve can be measured by a combinatorial object called the Poincare-Reeb tree associated to the curve and to a direction of projection. In this paper we show that if the chosen projection avoids the bitangents and the inflectional tangencies to the small enough level curves of a real bivariate polynomial function near a strict local minimum at the origin, then the asymptotic Poincare-Reeb tree becomes a complete binary tree and its vertices become endowed with a total order relation. Such a projection direction is called generic. We prove that for any such asymptotic family of level curves, there are finitely many intervals on the real projective line outside of which all the directions are generic with respect to all the curves in the family. If the choice of the direction of projection is generic, then the local shape of the curves can be encoded in terms of alternating permutations, that we call snakes. The snakes offer an effective description of the local geometry and topology, well-suited for further computations.
A new refinement of Euler numbers on counting alternating permutations
At a crossroads of calculus and combinatorics, the generating function of secant and tangent numbers (Euler numbers) provides enumeration of alternating permutations. In this article, we present a new refinement of Euler numbers to answer the combinatorial question on some particular relation of Euler numbers proved by Heneghan-Petersen, Power series for up-down min-max permutations, College Math. Journal, Vol. 45, No. 2 (2014), 83-91.
