Trail Trap: a variant of Partizan Edge Geography
We study a two-player game played on undirected graphs called {\sc Trail Trap}, which is a variant of a game known as {\sc Partizan Edge Geography}. One player starts by choosing any edge and moving a token from one endpoint to the other; the other player then chooses a different edge and does the same. Alternating turns, each player moves their token along an unused edge from its current vertex to an adjacent vertex, until one player cannot move and loses. We present an algorithm to determine which player has a winning strategy when the graph is a tree and partially characterize the trees on which a given player wins. Additionally, we show that it is NP-hard to determine if Player~2 has a winning strategy on {\sc Trail Trap} from the starting position, even for connected bipartite planar graphs with maximum degree $4$. We determine which player has a winning strategy for certain subclasses of complete bipartite graphs and grid graphs, and we propose several open problems for further study.

Eulerian Polynomials for Digraphs
Given an $n$-vertex digraph $D$ and a labeling $σ:V(D)\to [n]$, we say that an arc $u\to v$ of $D$ is a descent of $σ$ if $σ(u)>σ(v)$. Foata and Zeilberger introduced a generating function $A_D(t)$ for labelings of $D$ weighted by descents, which simultaneously generalizes both Eulerian polynomials and Mahonian polynomials. Motivated by work of Kalai, we look at problems related to $-1$ evaluations of $A_D(t)$. In particular, we give a combinatorial interpretation of $|A_D(-1)|$ in terms of "generalized alternating permutations" whenever the underlying graph of $D$ is bipartite.

Canonizing Graphs of Bounded Rank-Width in Parallel via Weisfeiler--Leman
In this paper, we show that computing canonical labelings of graphs of bounded rank-width is in $\textsf{TC}^{2}$. Our approach builds on the framework of Köbler & Verbitsky (CSR 2008), who established the analogous result for graphs of bounded treewidth. Here, we use the framework of Grohe & Neuen (ACM Trans. Comput. Log., 2023) to enumerate separators via split-pairs and flip functions. In order to control the depth of our circuit, we leverage the fact that any graph of rank-width $k$ admits a rank decomposition of width $\leq 2k$ and height $O(\log n)$ (Courcelle & Kanté, WG 2007). This allows us to utilize an idea from Wagner (CSR 2011) of tracking the depth of the recursion in our computation. Furthermore, after splitting the graph into connected components, it is necessary to decide isomorphism of said components in $\textsf{TC}^{1}$. To this end, we extend the work of Grohe & Neuen (ibid.) to show that the $(6k+3)$-dimensional Weisfeiler--Leman (WL) algorithm can identify graphs of rank-width $k$ using only $O(\log n)$ rounds. As a consequence, we obtain that graphs of bounded rank-width are identified by $\textsf{FO} + \textsf{C}$ formulas with $6k+4$ variables and quantifier depth $O(\log n)$. Prior to this paper, isomorphism testing for graphs of bounded rank-width was not known to be in $\textsf{NC}$.

Logarithmic Weisfeiler--Leman and Treewidth
In this paper, we show that the $(3k+4)$-dimensional Weisfeiler--Leman algorithm can identify graphs of treewidth $k$ in $O(\log n)$ rounds. This improves the result of Grohe & Verbitsky (ICALP 2006), who previously established the analogous result for $(4k+3)$-dimensional Weisfeiler--Leman. In light of the equivalence between Weisfeiler--Leman and the logic $\textsf{FO} + \textsf{C}$ (Cai, Fürer, & Immerman, Combinatorica 1992), we obtain an improvement in the descriptive complexity for graphs of treewidth $k$. Precisely, if $G$ is a graph of treewidth $k$, then there exists a $(3k+5)$-variable formula $\varphi$ in $\textsf{FO} + \textsf{C}$ with quantifier depth $O(\log n)$ that identifies $G$ up to isomorphism.

Quasi-Random Influences of Boolean Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine a hierarchy of equivalence classes of quasi-random properties of Boolean Functions. In particular, we prove an equivalence between a number of properties including balanced influences, spectral discrepancy, local strong regularity, homomorphism enumerations of colored or weighted graphs and hypergraphs associated with Boolean functions as well as the $k$th-order strict avalanche criterion amongst others. We further construct families of quasi-random boolean functions which exhibit the properties of our equivalence theorem and separate the levels of our hierarchy.
Maximal Planar Subgraphs of Fixed Girth in Random Graphs
In 1991, Bollobás and Frieze showed that the threshold for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a spanning maximal planar subgraph is very close to $p = n^{-1/3}$. In this paper, we compute similar threshold ranges for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal bipartite planar subgraph and for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal planar subgraph of fixed girth $g$.
