Complement minimally non-totally unimodular matrices
We prove that, up to row and column permutations and complement operations, the only complement minimally non-totally unimodular matrices are the cycle matrices $C_3$ and $C_5$. This settles a conjecture of Chervet, Grappe, and Vallée. As a consequence, every simplicial cone generated by the rows of a totally equimodular matrix admits a regular unimodular Hilbert triangulation.

On small covers over Bier spheres
The Bier sphere of a simplicial complex $K$ is defined as the deleted join of $K$ and its combinatorial Alexander dual. We focus on the class of Bier spheres of the skeleta of a simplex. Since these Bier spheres are known to be polytopal, they give rise to small covers. We classify small covers over these Bier spheres up to Davis--Januszkiewicz equivalence. As applications, for all $m \geq 4$, we determine the homeomorphism types of small covers over the Bier spheres of the $0$-skeleton and the $(m-3)$-skeleton of an $(m-1)$-simplex. For the remaining cases $0<r<m-3$, we compute their rational Betti numbers.

On the toric lifting properties for simplicial $3$-spheres
We study the lifting problem for mod $2$ characteristic maps over simplicial $3$-spheres. Using a bad-block partition of the universal complex $X(\mathbb{Z}_2^4)$, we prove an avoidance criterion for liftability. We show that every simplicial $3$-sphere with at most $20$ vertices has the toric lifting property. We also obtain image-size and join-type results, and prove sharpness of the image-size bound in the universal-complex sense.

Enumerating Toric-Colorable Seeds of Picard Number Five via Binary Matroids
We introduce a binary matroid approach to the enumeration of mod 2 toric-colorable seeds of fixed Picard number. We organize these matroids by their contraction category and enumerate weak pseudomanifold subcomplexes by a dynamic programming algorithm. The main computational step uses a Gray code traversal of the mod 2 kernel of the ridge-facet incidence matrix. As the main new result, we find that there are 198,846 mod 2 toric-colorable seeds of dimension four and Picard number five. We also check that they all are toric-colorable. Finally, the same framework independently reproduces the Picard number 4 enumeration of Choi, Jang, and Vallée much faster than their previous method.

Full subcomplexes of Bier spheres
Full subcomplexes of a simplicial complex encode essential structure for understanding the complex itself. For a simplicial complex $K$, possibly with a ghost vertex, the Bier sphere of $K$ is a simplicial sphere obtained as the deleted join of $K$ and its combinatorial Alexander dual. In this paper, we determine the homotopy types of all full subcomplexes of Bier spheres. As applications, we provide a formula for the bigraded Betti numbers of the Bier sphere of $K$ in terms of full subcomplexes of $K$, and we explicitly describe the cohomology of real toric manifolds associated with Bier spheres.

Stellar subdivisions, wedges and Buchstaber numbers
A seed is a PL sphere that is not obtainable by a wedge operation from any other PL sphere. In this paper, we study two operations on PL spheres, known as the stellar subdivision and the wedge, that preserve the maximality of Buchstaber numbers and polytopality. We construct a new polytopal toric colorable seed from these two operations. As a corollary, we prove that the toric colorable seed inequality established by Choi and Park is tight.

Real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra
This paper investigates the rational Betti numbers of real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra. We consider the poset topology of a specific poset induced from a chordal building set, and show its EL-shellability. Based on this, we present an explicit description using alternating $\mathcal{B}$-permutations for a chordal building set $\mathcal{B}$, transforming the computing Betti numbers into a counting problem. This approach allows us to compute the $a$-number of a finite simple graph through permutation counting when the graph is chordal. In addition, we provide detailed computations for specific cases such as real Hochschild varieties corresponding to Hochschild polytopes.

Toric wedge induction and toric lifting property for piecewise linear spheres with a few vertices
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society, vol. 112, no. 1, 2025, pp. e70231 • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be an $(n-1)$-dimensional piecewise linear sphere on $[m]$, where $m\leq n+4$. There are a canonical action of $m$-dimensional torus $T^m$ on the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$, and a canonical action of $\mathbb{Z}_2^m$ on the real moment-angle complex $\mathbb{R}\mathcal{Z}_K$, where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is the additive group with two elements. We prove that any subgroup of $\mathbb{Z}_2^m$ acting freely on $\mathbb{R}\mathcal{Z}_K$ is induced by a subtorus of $T^m$ acting freely on $\mathcal{Z}_K$. The proof primarily utilizes a suitably modified method of toric wedge induction and the combinatorial structure of a specific binary matroid of rank $4$.

An algorithmic strategy for finding characteristic maps over wedged simplicial complexes
Published in Pacific J. Math. 320 (2022) 13-43 • View PublicationBIB
The puzzle method was introduced by Choi and Park as an effective method for finding non-singular characteristic maps over wedged simplicial complexes $K(J)$ obtained from a given simplicial complex $K$. We study further the mod 2 case of the puzzle method. We firstly describe it completely in terms of linear algebraic language which allows us to develop a constructive puzzle algorithm. We also analyze our algorithm and compare its performances with other known algorithms including the Garrison and Scott algorithm.

We give an explicit formula for the Gromov width for a class of symplectic toric manifolds constructed from simple graphs. As a corollary, we show a version of non-squeezing theorem with respect to the inclusion of connected graphs.

Example of C-rigid polytopes which are not B-rigid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple polytope $P$ is said to be \emph{B-rigid} if its combinatorial structure is characterized by its Tor-algebra, and is said to be \emph{C-rigid} if its combinatorial structure is characterized by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. It is known that a B-rigid simple polytope is C-rigid. In this paper, we, further, show that the B-rigidity is not equivalent to the C-rigidity.

Small covers over wedges of polygons
Published • View PublicationBIB
A small cover is a closed smooth manifold of dimension $n$ having a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action whose orbit space is isomorphic to a simple polytope. A typical example of small covers is a real projective toric manifold (or, simply, a real toric manifold), that is, a real locus of projective toric manifold. In the paper, we classify small covers and real toric manifolds whose orbit space is isomorphic to the dual of the simplicial complex obtainable by a sequence of wedgings from a polygon, using a systematic combinatorial method finding toric spaces called puzzles.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries
Published in Tohoku Math. J. (2), 68(1) (2016), 91--138 • View PublicationBIB
A fundamental result of toric geometry is that there is a bijection between toric varieties and fans. More generally, it is known that some class of manifolds having well-behaved torus actions, called topological toric manifolds $M^{2n}$, can be classified in terms of combinatorial data containing simplicial complexes with $m$ vertices. We remark that topological toric manifolds are a generalization of smooth toric varieties. The number $m-n$ is known as the Picard number when $M^{2n}$ is a {compact smooth} toric variety. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the topological toric manifolds over a simplicial complex $K$ and those over the complex obtained by simplicial wedge operations from $K$. As applications, we do the following. 1. We classify smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3. This is a reproving of a result of Batyrev. 2. We give a new and complete proof of projectivity of smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3 originally proved by Kleinschmidt and Sturmfels. 3. We find a criterion for a toric variety over the join of boundaries of simplices to be projective. When the toric variety is smooth, it is known as a generalized Bott manifold which is always projective. 4. We classify and enumerate real topological toric manifolds when $m-n=3$. 5. When $m-n \leq 3$, any real topological toric manifold is realizable as fixed points of the conjugation of a topological toric manifold.

A new graph invariant arises in toric topology
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, 67(2) (2015), 699-720 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.

Different moment-angle manifolds arising from two polytopes having the same bigraded Betti numbers
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 13 (2013) 3639-3649 • View PublicationBIB
Two simple polytopes of dimension 3 having the identical bigraded Betti numbers but non-isomorphic Tor-algebras are presented. These polytopes provide two homotopically different moment-angle manifolds having the same bigraded Betti numbers. These two simple polytopes are the first examples of polytopes that are (toric) cohomologically rigid but not combinatorially rigid.

Classification of real Bott manifolds and acyclic digraphs
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 369 (2017), pp. 2987-3011 • View PublicationBIB
We completely characterize real Bott manifolds up to affine diffeomorphism in terms of three simple matrix operations on square binary matrices obtained from strictly upper triangular matrices by permuting rows and columns simultaneously. We also prove that any graded ring isomorphism between the cohomology rings of real Bott manifolds with $\mathbb Z/2$ coefficients is induced by an affine diffeomorphism between the real Bott manifolds. Our characterization can also be described in terms of graph operations on directed acyclic graphs. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we prove that the decomposition of a real Bott manifold into a product of indecomposable real Bott manifolds is unique up to permutations of the indecomposable factors. Finally, we produce some numerical invariants of real Bott manifolds from the viewpoint of graph theory and discuss their topological meaning. As a by-product, we prove that the toral rank conjecture holds for real Bott manifolds.

Real Bott manifolds and acyclic digraphs
Masuda (2008) provided the characterization of real Bott manifolds in terms of three operations on upper triangular matrices. We provide a combinatorial characterization of real Bott manifolds up to diffeomorphism in terms of operations on directed acyclic graphs. Our observation leads to several new invariants of real Bott manifolds.

Combinatorial rigidity of 3-dimensional simplicial polytopes
Published in Int Math Res Notices 2011 (2011), 1935-1951 • View PublicationBIB
A simplicial polytope is combinatorially rigid if its combinatorial structure is determined by its graded Betti numbers which are important invariant coming from combinatorial commutative algebra. We find a necessary condition to be combinatorially rigid for 3-dimensional reducible simplicial polytopes and provide some rigid reducible simplicial polytopes.

A combinatorial proof of a formula for Betti numbers of a stacked polytope
Published in Electron. J. Combin., 17(1), #R9, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
For a simplicial complex $Δ$, the graded Betti number $β_{i,j}(k[Δ])$ of the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ over a field $k$ has a combinatorial interpretation due to Hochster. Terai and Hibi showed that if $Δ$ is the boundary complex of a $d$-dimensional stacked polytope with $n$ vertices for $d\geq3$, then $β_{k-1,k}(k[Δ])=(k-1)\binom{n-d}{k}$. We prove this combinatorially.
