Multigraded Regularity of the Complete Flag Variety
We study the multigraded regularity of the complete flag variety under the Plücker embedding. In particular, we prove inductive relationships about the regularity regions, and we provide some inner and outer bounds on the regions.

Chamber Decompositions of Moment Polytopes for Torus Actions of Positive Complexity
The present work develops the results of the series of papers by Buchstaber and Terzić on the standard actions of the compact torus $T^n = (S^1)^n$ on the complex Grassmann manifolds $G_{n,2}$. In those works, a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ was introduced that determines the chamber decomposition of the hypersimplex $Δ_{n,2}$ for the $T^n$-action on $G_{n,2}$. We introduce a notion of admissible graph for the standard action of the torus $T^n$ on the complex Grassmannian $G_{n,2}$. In terms of admissible graphs, we give a complete inductive description (with respect to $n \ge 4$) of the admissible polytopes in $Δ_{n,2}$, as well as of the toric varieties arising as closures of $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$-orbits on $G_{n,2}$ under the standard $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$-action. We consider the $T^n$-equivariant Plücker embedding $G_{n,2} \hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}P^{N_2}$, where $N_2 = \binom{n}{2}-1$. Using admissible graphs, for the considered $T^n$-actions, we describe hyperplane arrangements in $\mathbb{R}^n$ that determine the chambers in $Δ_{n,2}$ for the $T^n$-actions on $G_{n,2}$ and $\mathbb{C}P^{N_2}$. Gel'fand, Kapranov, and Zelevinsky introduced the notions of secondary polytopes and secondary fans in connection with the problem of describing triangulations of a given convex polytope, which is closely related to the Newton polytopes of discriminants and resultants. For the $T^n$-action on $\mathbb{C}P^{N_2}$, we show that the cones in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with vertex at the origin spanned by the chambers form the secondary fan of the cone spanned by the vertices of $Δ_{n,2}$.
Three lectures on tropical algebra
This document is a slightly expanded version of a series of talks given by J. Giansiracusa at the workshop `Geometry over semirings' at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in July 2025. In the first lecture we introduce tropical polynomials, ideals, congruences, and how the connection with tropical geometry is made via congruences of bend relations. Tropical geometry and matroid theory are telling us that we should focus attention on a narrow slice of the world of tropical algebra, and this leads to the theory of tropical ideals (as developed by Maclagan and Rincón) and an abundance of interesting open questions. In the second lecture we examine the relationship between Berkovich analytification and tropicalization from the perspective of bend relations, giving a refinement of Payne's influential limit theorem. In the third lecture we set aside geometry and focus on tropicalization via bend relations as a construction in commutative and non-commutative algebra. Constructions such as symmetric algebras, exterior algebras, matrix algebras, and Clifford algebras can be tropicalized. In the case of exterior algebras, the resulting tropical notion beautifully completes the picture of the Plücker embedding and gives a new perspective on the tropical Plücker relations. For matrix algebras and Clifford algebras, Morita theory becomes an interesting topic.

Exterior Cyclic Polytopes and Convexity of Amplituhedra
The amplituhedron is a semialgebraic set in the Grassmannian. We study convexity and duality of amplituhedra. We introduce a notion of convexity, called \textit{extendable convexity}, for real semialgebraic sets in any embedded projective variety. We show that the $k=m=2$ amplituhedron is extendably convex in the Grassmannian of lines in projective three-space. In the process we introduce a new polytope called the \emph{exterior cyclic polytope}, generalizing the cyclic polytope. It is equal to the convex hull of the amplituhedron in the Plücker embedding. We undertake a combinatorial analysis of the exterior cyclic polytope, its facets, and its dual. Finally, we introduce the \textit{(extendable) dual amplituhedron}, which is closely related to the dual of the exterior cyclic polytope. We show that the dual amplituhedron for $k=m=2$ is again an amplituhedron, where the external matrix data is changed by the twist map.

Ind-cluster algebras and infinite Grassmannians
A prototypical examples of a cluster algebra is the coordinate ring of a finite Grassmannian: using the Plücker embedding the cluster algebra structure allows one to move between `maximal sets' of algebraically independent Plücker coordinates via mutations. Fioresi and Hacon studied a specific colimit of the coordinate rings of finite Grassmannians and its link with the infinite Grassmannian introduced by Sato and independently by Segal and Wilson in connection with the Kadomtsev-Petiashvili (KP) hierarchy, an infinite set of nonlinear partial differential equations which possess soliton solutions. In this article we prove that this ring is a cluster algebra of infinite rank with the structure induced by the colimit construction. More generally, we prove that cluster algebras of infinite rank are precisely the ind-objects of a natural category of cluster algebras.

Cluster structures on spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the homogeneous coordinate rings of partial flag varieties and Grassmannians in their Plücker embeddings and exhibit an embedding of the former into the latter. Both rings are cluster algebras and the embedding respects the cluster algebra structures in the sense that there exists a seed for the Grassmannian that restricts to a seed for the partial flag variety (\textit{i.e.} it is obtained by freezing and deleting some cluster variables). The motivation for this project stems from the application of cluster algebras in scattering amplitudes: spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties describe massless scattering without assuming dual conformal symmetry. Both may be obtained from Grassmanninas which model the dual conformal case. They are instances of partial flag varieties and their cluster structures reveal information for the scattering amplitudes. As an application of our main result we exhibit the relation between these cluster algebras.
Coupled Cluster Degree of the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the number of complex solutions to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem on the Grassmannian in its Plücker embedding. This is motivated by quantum chemistry, where it represents the truncation to single electrons in coupled cluster theory. We prove the formula for the Grassmannian of lines which was conjectured in earlier work with Fabian Faulstich. This rests on the geometry of the graph of a birational parametrization of the Grassmannian. We present a squarefree Gröbner basis for this graph, and we develop connections to toric degenerations from representation theory.

Symmetric Toda, gradient flows, and tridiagonalization
Published in Phys. D 450 (2023), Paper No. 133766, 10 pages • View Publication • BIB
The Toda lattice (1967) is a Hamiltonian system given by $n$ points on a line governed by an exponential potential. Flaschka (1974) showed that the Toda lattice is integrable by interpreting it as a flow on the space of symmetric tridiagonal $n\times n$ matrices, while Moser (1975) showed that it is a gradient flow on a projective space. The symmetric Toda flow of Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) generalizes the Toda lattice flow from tridiagonal to all symmetric matrices. They showed the flow is integrable, in the classical sense of having $d$ integrals in involution on its $2d$-dimensional phase space. The system may be viewed as integrable in other ways as well. Firstly, Symes (1980, 1982) solved it explicitly via $QR$-factorization and conjugation. Secondly, Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) 'tridiagonalized' the system into a family of tridiagonal Toda lattices which are solvable and integrable. In this paper we derive their tridiagonalization procedure in a natural way using the fact that the symmetric Toda flow is diffeomorphic to a twisted gradient flow on a flag variety, which may then be decomposed into flows on a product of Grassmannians. These flows may in turn be embedded into projective spaces via Plücker embeddings, and mapped back to tridiagonal Toda lattice flows using Moser's construction. In addition, we study the tridiagonalized flows projected onto a product of permutohedra, using the twisted moment map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990). These ideas are facilitated in a natural way by the theory of total positivity, building on our previous work (2023).

Smooth torus quotients of Richardson varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $n$ be positive coprime integers with $k<n$. Let $T$ denote the subgroup of diagonal matrices in $SL(n,\mathbb{C})$. We study the GIT quotient of Richardson varieties $X^v_w$ in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{k,n}$ by $T$ with respect to a $T$-linearised line bundle $\cal{L}$ corresponding to the Plücker embedding. We give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for the quotient variety $T \backslash\mkern-6mu\backslash (X_w^v)^{ss}_T({\cal L})$ to be smooth.
Friezes satisfying higher SL$_k$-determinants
Published in Alg. Number Th. 15 (2021) 29-68 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we construct SL$_k$-friezes using Plücker coordinates, making use of the cluster structure on the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian of $k$-spaces in $n$-space via the Plücker embedding. When this cluster algebra is of finite type, the SL$_k$-friezes are in bijection with the so-called mesh friezes of the corresponding Grassmannian cluster category. These are collections of positive integers on the AR-quiver of the category with relations inherited from the mesh relations on the category. In these finite type cases, many of the SL$_k$-friezes arise from specialising a cluster to 1. These are called unitary. We use Iyama-Yoshino reduction to analyse the non-unitary friezes. With this, we provide an explanation for all known friezes of this kind. An appendix by Cuntz and Plamondon proves that there are 868 friezes of type $E_6$.

Cyclic Sieving and Cluster Duality of Grassmannian
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 067, 41 pages • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a decorated configuration space $\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a)$ with a potential function $\mathcal{W}$. We prove the cluster duality conjecture of Fock-Goncharov for Grassmannians, that is, the tropicalization of $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ canonically parametrizes a linear basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}_a(n)$ with respect to the Plücker embedding. We prove that $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ is equivalent to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model of the Grassmannian considered by Eguchi-Hori-Xiong, Marsh-Rietsch and Rietsch-Williams. As an application, we show a cyclic sieving phenomenon involving plane partitions under a sequence of piecewise-linear toggles.
Geometry of Hessenberg varieties with applications to Newton-Okounkov bodies
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. (2018) 24: 2129 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the geometry of various Hessenberg varieties in type A, as well as families thereof, with the additional goal of laying the groundwork for future computations of Newton-Okounkov bodies of Hessenberg varieties. Our main results are as follows. We find explicit and computationally convenient generators for the local defining ideals of indecomposable regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and then show that all regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties are local complete intersections. We also show that certain families of Hessenberg varieties, whose generic fibers are regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and the special fiber is a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, are flat and have reduced fibres. This result further allows us to give a computationally effective formula for the degree of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety with respect to a Plücker embedding. Furthermore, we construct certain flags of subvarieties of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, obtained by intersecting with Schubert varieties, which are suitable for computing Newton-Okounkov bodies. As an application of our results, we explicitly compute many Newton-Okounkov bodies of the two-dimensional Peterson variety with respect to Plücker embeddings.

A geometric approach to alternating $k$-linear forms
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 45 (2017) 931-963 • View Publication • BIB
Given an $n$-dimensional vector space $V$ over a field $\mathbb K$, let $2\leq k < n$. There is a natural correspondence between the alternating $k$-linear forms $\varphi$ of $V$ and the linear functionals $f$ of $\bigwedge^kV$. Let $\varepsilon_k:{\mathcal G}_k(V)\rightarrow {\mathrm{PG}}(\bigwedge^kV)$ be the Plucker embedding of the $k$-Grassmannian ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$ of $V$. Then $\varepsilon_k^{-1}(\ker(f)\cap\varepsilon_k(\mathcal{G}_k(V)))$ is a hyperplane of the point-line geometry ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$. All hyperplanes of ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$ can be obtained in this way. For a hyperplane $H$ of ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$, let $R^\uparrow(H)$ be the subspace of ${\mathcal G}_{k-1}(V)$ formed by the $(k-1)$-subspaces $A\subset V$ such that $H$ contains all $k$-subspaces that contain $A$. In other words, if $\varphi$ is the (unique modulo a scalar) alternating $k$-linear form defining $H$, then the elements of $R^\uparrow(H)$ are the $(k-1)$-subspaces $A = \langle a_1,\ldots, a_{k-1}\rangle$ of $V$ such that $\varphi(a_1,\ldots, a_{k-1},x) = 0$ for all $x\in V$. When $n-k$ is even it might be that $R^\uparrow(H) = \emptyset$. When $n-k$ is odd, then $R^\uparrow(H) \neq \emptyset$, since every $(k-2)$-subspace of $V$ is contained in at least one member of $R^\uparrow(H)$. If every $(k-2)$-subspace of $V$ is contained in precisely one member of $R^\uparrow(H)$ we say that $R^\uparrow(H)$ is spread-like. In this paper we obtain some results on $R^\uparrow(H)$ which answer some open questions from the literature and suggest the conjecture that, if $n-k$ is even and at least $4$, then $R^\uparrow(H) \neq \emptyset$ but for one exception with ${\mathbb K}\leq{\mathbb R}$ and $(n,k) = (7,3)$, while if $n-k$ is odd and at least $5$ then $R^\uparrow(H)$ is never spread-like.

Line Polar Grassmann Codes of Orthogonal Type
Published • View Publication • BIB
Polar Grassmann codes of orthogonal type have been introduced in I. Cardinali and L. Giuzzi, \emph{Codes and caps from orthogonal Grassmannians}, {Finite Fields Appl.} {\bf 24} (2013), 148-169. They are subcodes of the Grassmann code arising from the projective system defined by the Plücker embedding of a polar Grassmannian of orthogonal type. In the present paper we fully determine the minimum distance of line polar Grassmann Codes of orthogonal type for $q$ odd.

On some subvarieties of the Grassmann variety
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 63:11 (2015), 2121-2134 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal S$ be a Desarguesian $(t-1)$--spread of $PG(rt-1,q)$, $Π$ a $m$-dimensional subspace of $PG(rt-1,q)$ and $Λ$ the linear set consisting of the elements of $\mathcal S$ with non-empty intersection with $Π$. It is known that the Plücker embedding of the elements of $\mathcal S$ is a variety of $PG(r^t-1,q)$, say ${\mathcal V}_{rt}$. In this paper, we describe the image under the Plücker embedding of the elements of $Λ$ and we show that it is an $m$-dimensional algebraic variety, projection of a Veronese variety of dimension $m$ and degree $t$, and it is a suitable linear section of ${\mathcal V}_{rt}$.

Equidistant Codes in the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
Equidistant codes over vector spaces are considered. For $k$-dimensional subspaces over a large vector space the largest code is always a sunflower. We present several simple constructions for such codes which might produce the largest non-sunflower codes. A novel construction, based on the Plücker embedding, for 1-intersecting codes of $k$-dimensional subspaces over $\F_q^n$, $n \geq \binom{k+1}{2}$, where the code size is $\frac{q^{k+1}-1}{q-1}$ is presented. Finally, we present a related construction which generates equidistant constant rank codes with matrices of size $n \times \binom{n}{2}$ over $\F_q$, rank $n-1$, and rank distance $n-1$.

Gorenstein Semigroup Algebras of Weighted Trees
Published in J. Algebra 354 (2012), 110-120 • View Publication • BIB
We classify exactly when the toric algebras $\C[S_{\tree}(\br)]$ are Gorenstein. These algebras arise as toric deformations of algebras of invariants of the Cox-Nagata ring of the blow-up of $n-1$ points on $\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$, or equivalently algebras of the ring of global sections for the Plücker embedding of weight varieties of the Grassmanian $Gr_2(\C^n)$, and algebras of global sections for embeddings of moduli of weighted points on $\mathbb{P}^1$. As a corollary, we find exactly when these families of rings are Gorenstein as well.
