A counterexample to the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture
The Etzion-Silberstein conjecture asserts that the Singleton-type upper bound for linear Ferrers-diagram rank-metric codes is attained for every Ferrers diagram, minimum rank distance, and finite field. Let $E$ be the Ferrers diagram with column heights $(5,5,5,5,1,1)$. The bound for minimum rank distance $3$ is $12$. We prove that every binary linear code supported on $E$ with minimum rank distance $3$ has dimension at most $11$, and we give an explicit code of dimension $11$. Thus the optimum is exactly $11$, disproving the conjecture. The nonexistence proof reduces a hypothetical dimension-$12$ code to one of the three equivalence classes of binary $[4\times 4,12,2]$ MRD codes. A rank-distribution argument eliminates two classes and leaves four kernel orbits in the field class; all four exact lift systems are unsatisfiable. Independently written verifiers reproduce the result, including a raw enumeration of all $8,382,465$ kernels without orbit reduction. We also prove an exact row-cone propagation identity. Iterating it produces binary counterexamples with bound $12$ and optimum $11$ at every minimum rank distance $d \geq 3$.

On the autotopism groups and the equivalence of finite cyclic semifields
Special cases of finite cyclic semifields were first constructed by Hughes and Kleinfeld in 1960, and later by Sandler in 1962 and Knuth in 1965. The general construction of cyclic semifields was subsequently introduced by Petit in 1966, and later rediscovered from the perspective of irreducible semilinear transformations by Jha and Johnson in 1989. Since Sandler's foundational work in 1962, the complete determination of the autotopism groups of cyclic semifields and the full resolution of the isotopy problem for this family have remained long-standing open problems. The most significant advances in determining these autotopism groups are due to Dempwolff in 2011, who left open the case in which the field extension degree strictly divides the degree of the polynomial defining the semifield. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of cyclic semifields up to isotopy, together with the full determination of their autotopism groups, thereby closing the remaining cases left open by Dempwolff. Since cyclic semifields arise as a special instance of a broader family of maximum rank distance (MRD) codes constructed via skew polynomials, our methods also yield a complete classification of these MRD codes up to linear and semilinear equivalence over the prime field, together with an explicit description of their full automorphism groups.

Constructions of Rank-Metric Codes of Small Tensor Rank
Rank-metric codes are subspaces of matrices over finite fields endowed with the rank metric and admit a natural tensorial representation. The tensor rank provides a measure of the minimal size of a decomposition of a code into rank-one tensors. Kruskal showed that the tensor rank of a rank-metric code of dimension $k$ and minimum rank distance $d$ is at least $k + d - 1$, and codes meeting this bound with equality are called minimal tensor rank (MTR) codes. It is known from algebraic complexity theory that the existence of an MTR code implies the existence of a maximum distance separable (MDS) code. In this work, we establish new results relating the tensor rank of a rank-metric code to the parameters of associated linear codes in the Hamming metric and introduce the notion of tensor rank defect. We then develop new constructions of rank-metric codes with small tensor rank defect using algebraic geometry (AG) codes.
Irreducible Ferrers diagrams in the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture
The Etzion-Silberstein conjecture asserts that, for any finite field $\mathbb F$, Ferrers diagram $\mathcal D$, and integer $d$, there exists a linear matrix code supported on $\mathcal D$ with minimum rank distance $d$ that attains a natural upper bound on its dimension. Codes achieving this bound are called maximum Ferrers diagram (MFD) codes. While the conjecture has been established for several classes of diagrams (including rectangular, monotone, and MDS-constructible cases), it remains open in general. In this paper, we study the reducibility of Ferrers diagrams. For a fixed distance $d$, a diagram $\mathcal D$ is said to reduce to $\mathcal D'$ if an MFD code for $(\mathcal D,d)$ can be obtained from one for $(\mathcal D',d)$ via shortening or inclusion. Diagrams that are not reducible are called irreducible. We show that the conjecture holds for all diagrams if and only if it holds for irreducible ones, thereby reducing the problem to this fundamental class. Our main result provides a complete characterization of irreducible diagrams: for each $d$, they correspond exactly to the integer points of a polytope $\mathfrak{P}_d \subset \mathbb{R}^{2d-3}$. We prove that these polytopes are integral, enabling the use of Ehrhart-theoretic tools to study their structure. Finally, we formulate a new conjecture on puncturing and inclusion of maximum rank distance codes, and show that it arises as a special case of the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture.
An infinite family of non-extendable MRD codes
In the realm of rank-metric codes, Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes are optimal algebraic structures attaining the Singleton-like bound. A major open problem in this field is determining whether an MRD code can be extended to a longer one while preserving its optimality. This work investigates $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear MRD codes that are non-extendable but do not attain the maximum possible length. Geometrically, these correspond to scattered subspaces with respect to hyperplanes that are maximal with respect to inclusion but not of maximum dimension. By exploiting this geometric connection, we introduce the first infinite family of non-extendable $[4,2,3]_{q^5/q}$ MRD codes. Furthermore, we prove that these codes are self-dual up to equivalence.

Rank-metric codes over arbitrary fields: Bounds and constructions
Rank-metric codes, defined as sets of matrices over a finite field with the rank distance, have gained significant attention due to their applications in network coding and connections to diverse mathematical areas. Initially studied by Delsarte in 1978 and later rediscovered by Gabidulin, these codes have become a central topic in coding theory. This paper surveys the development and mathematical foundations, in particular, regarding bounds and constructions of rank-metric codes, emphasizing their extension beyond finite fields to more general settings. We examine Singleton-like bounds on code parameters, demonstrating their sharpness in finite field cases and contrasting this with contexts where the bounds are not tight. Furthermore, we discuss constructions of Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes over fields with cyclic Galois extensions and the relationship between linear rank-metric codes with systems and evasive subspaces. The paper also reviews results for algebraically closed fields and real numbers, previously appearing in the context of topology and measure theory. We conclude by proposing future research directions, including conjectures on MRD code existence and the exploration of rank-metric codes over various field extensions.
Decoding Trombetti-Zhou codes: a new syndrome-based decoding approach
In 2019, Trombetti and Zhou introduced a new family of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$. For such codes we propose a new syndrome-based decoding algorithm. It is well known that a syndrome-based decoding approach relies heavily on a parity-check matrix of a linear code. Nonetheless, Trombetti-Zhou codes are not linear over the entire field $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$, but only over its subfield $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$. Due to this lack of linearity, we introduce the notions of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-generator matrix and $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-parity-check matrix for a generic $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-linear rank-metric code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{rn}}$ in analogy with the roles that generator and parity-check matrices play in the context of linear codes. Accordingly, we present an $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-generator matrix and $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-parity-check matrix for Trombetti-Zhou codes as evaluation codes over an $\mathbb{F}_q$-basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$. This relies on the choice of a particular basis called \emph{trace almost dual basis}. Subsequently, denoting by $d$ the minimum distance of the code, we show that if the rank weight $t$ of the error vector is strictly smaller than $\frac{d-1}{2}$, the syndrome-based decoding of Trombetti-Zhou codes can be converted to the decoding of Gabidulin codes of dimension one larger. On the other hand, when $t=\frac{d-1}{2}$, we reduce the decoding to determining the rank of a certain matrix. The complexity of the proposed decoding for Trombetti-Zhou codes is also discussed.
Adjoint and duality for rank-metric codes in a skew polynomial framework
Skew polynomial rings provide a fundamental example of noncommutative principal ideal domains. Special quotients of these rings yield matrix algebras that play a central role in the theory of rank-metric codes. Recent breakthroughs have shown that specific subsets of these quotients produce the largest known families of maximum rank distance (MRD) codes. In this work, we present a systematic study of transposition and duality operations within quotients of skew polynomial rings. We develop explicit skew-polynomial descriptions of the transpose and dual code constructions, enabling us to determine the adjoint and dual codes associated with the MRD code families recently introduced by Sheekey et al. Building on these results, we compute the nuclear parameters of these codes, and prove that, for a new infinite set of parameters, many of these MRD codes are inequivalent to previously known constructions in the literature.
Quotients of skew polynomial rings: new constructions of division algebras and MRD codes
We achieve new results on skew polynomial rings and their quotients, including the first explicit example of a skew polynomial ring where the ratio of the degree of a skew polynomial to the degree of its bound is not extremal. These methods lead to the construction of new (not necessarily associative) division algebras and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes over both finite and infinite division rings. In particular, we construct new non-associative division algebras whose right nucleus is a central simple algebra having degree greater than 1. Over finite fields, we obtain new semifields and MRD codes for infinitely many choices of parameters. These families extend and contain many of the best previously known constructions.

On a weighted generalization of Kendall's tau distance
Published in Ann. Comb. 25, 33-50 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a metric on the set of permutations of given order, which is a weighted generalization of Kendall's $τ$ rank distance and study its properties. Using the edge graph of a permutohedron, we give a criterion which guarantees that a permutation lies metrically between another two fixed permutations. In addition, the conditions under which four points from the resulting metric space form a pseudolinear quadruple were found.

On perfect symmetric rank-metric codes
Let $\mathrm{Sym}_q(m)$ be the space of symmetric matrices in $\mathbb{F}_q^{m\times m}$. A subspace of $\mathrm{Sym}_q(m)$ equipped with the rank distance is called a symmetric rank-metric code. In this paper we study the covering properties of symmetric rank-metric codes. First we characterize symmetric rank-metric codes which are perfect, i.e. that satisfy the equality in the sphere-packing like bound. We show that, despite the rank-metric case, there are non trivial perfect codes. Also, we characterize families of codes which are quasi-perfect.
Eigenvalue bounds and alternating rank-metric codes
In this note we apply a spectral method to the graph of alternating bilinear forms. In this way, we obtain upper bounds on the size of an alternating rank-metric code for given values of the minimum rank distance. We computationally compare our results with Delsarte's linear programming bound, observing that they give the same value. For small values of the minimum rank distance, we are able to establish the equivalence of the two methods. The problem remains open for larger values.

Random Gabidulin Codes Achieve List Decoding Capacity in the Rank Metric
Gabidulin codes, serving as the rank-metric counterpart of Reed-Solomon codes, constitute an important class of maximum rank distance (MRD) codes. However, unlike the fruitful positive results about the list decoding of Reed-Solomon codes, results concerning the list decodability of Gabidulin codes in the rank metric are all negative so far. For example, in contrast to Reed-Solomon codes, which are always list decodable up to the Johnson bound in the Hamming metric, Raviv and Wachter-Zeh (IEEE TIT, 2016 and 2017) constructed a class of Gabidulin codes that are not even combinatorially list decodable beyond the unique decoding radius in the rank metric. Proving the existence of Gabidulin codes with good combinatorial list decodability in the rank metric has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we resolve the aforementioned open problem by showing that, with high probability, random Gabidulin codes over sufficiently large alphabets attain the optimal generalized Singleton bound for list decoding in the rank metric. In particular, they achieve list decoding capacity in the rank metric. Our work is significantly influenced by the recent breakthroughs in the combinatorial list decodability of Reed-Solomon codes, especially the work by Brakensiek, Gopi, and Makam (STOC 2023). Our major technical contributions, which may hold independent interest, consist of the following: (1) We initiate the study of ``higher order MRD codes'' and provide a novel unified theory, which runs parallel to the theory of ``higher order MDS codes'' developed by BGM. (2) We prove a natural analog of the GM-MDS theorem, proven by Lovett (FOCS 2018) and Yildiz and Hassibi (IEEE TIT, 2019), which we call the GM-MRD theorem. In particular, our GM-MRD theorem for Gabidulin codes are strictly stronger than the GM-MDS theorem for Gabidulin codes, proven by Yildiz and Hassibi (IEEE TIT, 2019).
Rank-Metric Codes and Their Parameters
We present the theory of linear rank-metric codes from the point of view of their fundamental parameters. These are: the minimum rank distance, the rank distribution, the maximum rank, the covering radius, and the field size. The focus of this chapter is on the interplay among these parameters and on their significance for the code's (combinatorial) structure. The results covered in this chapter span from the theory of optimal codes and anticodes to very recent developments on the asymptotic density of MRD codes.
Non-linear MRD codes from cones over exterior sets
By using the notion of $d$-embedding $Γ$ of a (canonical) subgeometry $Σ$ and of exterior set with respect to the $h$-secant variety $Ω_{h}(\mathcal{A})$ of a subset $\mathcal{A}$, $ 0 \leq h \leq n-1$, in the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, $n \geq 3$, in this article we construct a class of non-linear $(n,n,q;d)$-MRD codes for any $ 2 \leq d \leq n-1$. A code $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ of this class, where $1\in T \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ and $σ$ is a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}|\mathbb{F}_q)$, arises from a cone of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$ with vertex an $(n-d-2)$-dimensional subspace over a maximum exterior set $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to $Ω_{d-2}(Γ)$. We prove that the codes introduced in [Cossidente, A., Marino, G., Pavese, F.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 79, 597--609 (2016); Durante, N., Siciliano, A.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries. Electron. J. Comb. (2017); Donati, G., Durante, N.: A generalization of the normal rational curve in $\mathrm{PG}(d,q^n)$ and its associated non-linear MRD codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 86, 1175--1184 (2018)] are appropriate punctured ones of $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ and solve completely the inequivalence issue for this class showing that $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ is neither equivalent nor adjointly equivalent to the non-linear MRD code $\mathcal{C}_{n,k,σ,I}$, $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, obtained in [Otal, K., Özbudak, F.: Some new non-additive maximum rank distance codes. Finite Fields and Their Applications 50, 293--303 (2018).].

Constructing MRD codes by switching
Published in J. Comb. Des. 32(5) 2024, 219-237 • View PublicationBIB
MRD codes are maximum codes in the rank-distance metric space on $m$-by-$n$ matrices over the finite field of order $q$. They are diameter perfect and have the cardinality $q^{m(n-d+1)}$ if $m\ge n$. We define switching in MRD codes as replacing special MRD subcodes by other subcodes with the same parameters. We consider constructions of MRD codes admitting such switching, including punctured twisted Gabidulin codes and direct-product codes. Using switching, we construct a huge class of MRD codes whose cardinality grows doubly exponentially in $m$ if the other parameters ($n$, $q$, the code distance) are fixed. Moreover, we construct MRD codes with different affine ranks and aperiodic MRD codes. Keywords: MRD codes, rank distance, bilinear forms graph, switching, diameter perfect codes
Cones from maximum $h$-scattered linear sets and a stability result

This paper mainly focuses on cones whose basis is a maximum $h$-scattered linear set. We start by investigating the intersection sizes of such cones with the hyperplanes. Then we analyze two constructions of point sets with few intersection sizes with the hyperplanes. In particular, the second one extends the construction of translation KM-arcs in projective spaces, having as part at infinity a cone with basis a maximum $h$-scattered linear set. As an instance of the second construction we obtain cylinders with a hyperoval as basis, which we call hypercylinders, for which we are able to provide a stability result. The main motivation for these problems is related to the connections with both Hamming and rank distance codes. Indeed, we are able to construct codes with few weights and to provide a stability result for the codes associated with hypercylinders.

On the equivalence issue of a class of $2$-dimensional linear Maximum Rank Distance codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [A. Neri, P. Santonastaso, F. Zullo. Extending two families of maximum rank distance codes], the authors extended the family of $2$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$-linear MRD codes recently found in [G. Longobardi, G. Marino, R. Trombetti, Y. Zhou. A large family of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ and their associated MRD codes]. Also, for $t \geq 5$ they determined equivalence classes of the elements in this new family and provided the exact number of inequivalent codes in it. In this article, we complete the study of the equivalence issue removing the restriction $t \geq 5$. Moreover, we prove that in the case when $t=4$, the linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{8})$ ensuing from codes in the relevant family, are not equivalent to any one known so far.
Towards the classification of exceptional scattered polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattered polynomials over finite fields attracted an increasing attention in the last years. One of the reasons is their deep connection with Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes. Known classification results for exceptional scattered polynomials, i.e. polynomials which are scattered over infinite field extensions, are limited to the cases where their index $\ell$ is small, or a prime number larger than the $q$-degree $k$ of the polynomial, or an integer smaller than the $k$ in the case where $k$ is a prime. In this paper we completely classify exceptional scattered polynomials when the maximum between $\ell$ and $k$ is odd, and give partial results when it is even, extending a result of Ferraguti and Micheli in 2021.
Linear maximum rank distance codes of exceptional type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattered polynomials of a given index over finite fields are intriguing rare objects with many connections within mathematics. Of particular interest are the exceptional ones, as defined in 2018 by the first author and Zhou, for which partial classification results are known. In this paper we propose a unified algebraic description of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear maximum rank distance codes, introducing the notion of exceptional linear maximum rank distance codes of a given index. Such a connection naturally extends the notion of exceptionality for a scattered polynomial in the rank metric framework and provides a generalization of Moore sets in the monomial MRD context. We move towards the classification of exceptional linear MRD codes, by showing that the ones of index zero are generalized Gabidulin codes and proving that in the positive index case the code contains an exceptional scattered polynomial of the same index.
