On perfect flag-rank metric codes
Flag-rank-metric codes arise as a natural generalization of rank-metric codes in the context of network communication. While recent research has mainly focused on algebraic and structural properties of these codes, the combinatorial geometry underlying the flag-rank metric remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we initiate a detailed investigation of this geometry. We explicitly determine the size of spheres of small flag-rank radius in the space $\mathrm{U}(n,\mathbb{F}_q)$ of upper triangular matrices over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and consequently obtain formulas for the size of balls of radius at most $3$. Using these enumerative results, we derive a sphere-packing bound for flag-rank-metric codes and introduce the notion of perfect codes with respect to the flag-rank metric. We observe that no non-trivial perfect flag-rank-metric codes exist in $\mathrm{U}(n,\mathbb{F}_q)$ for $n\in\{2,3\}$. We then investigate the possible parameters of perfect codes in higher dimensions. For minimum distance $3$, we obtain a characterization in terms of the codimension of the code, and show that suitable maximum flag-rank distance codes with minimum distance $3$ yield non-trivial perfect codes. For minimum distances $5$ and $7$, we derive explicit quadratic and cubic conditions, respectively, that any perfect code must satisfy. Finally, using asymptotic estimates for balls of fixed radius, we prove that for fixed length $n$ and $δ\in\{3,5,7,9,11\}$, perfect linear flag-rank-metric codes with minimum distance $δ$ do not exist over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for all sufficiently large $q$.
One-weight codes in the sum-rank metric
One-weight codes, in which all nonzero codewords share the same weight, form a highly structured class of linear codes with deep connections to finite geometry. While their classification is well understood in the Hamming and rank metrics - being equivalent to (direct sums of) simplex codes - the sum-rank metric presents a far more intricate landscape. In this work, we explore the geometry of one-weight sum-rank metric codes, focusing on three distinct classes. First, we introduce and classify \emph{constant rank-list} sum-rank codes, where each nonzero codeword has the same tuple of ranks, extending results from the rank-metric setting. Next, we investigate the more general \emph{constant rank-profile} codes, where, up to reordering, each nonzero codeword has the same tuple of ranks. Although a complete classification remains elusive, we present the first examples and partial structural results for this class. Finally, we consider one-weight codes that are also MSRD (Maximum Sum-Rank Distance) codes. For dimension two, constructions arise from partitions of scattered linear sets on projective lines. For dimension three, we connect their existence to that of special $2$-fold blocking sets in the projective plane, leading to new bounds and nonexistence results over certain fields.
On perfect symmetric rank-metric codes
Let $\mathrm{Sym}_q(m)$ be the space of symmetric matrices in $\mathbb{F}_q^{m\times m}$. A subspace of $\mathrm{Sym}_q(m)$ equipped with the rank distance is called a symmetric rank-metric code. In this paper we study the covering properties of symmetric rank-metric codes. First we characterize symmetric rank-metric codes which are perfect, i.e. that satisfy the equality in the sphere-packing like bound. We show that, despite the rank-metric case, there are non trivial perfect codes. Also, we characterize families of codes which are quasi-perfect.
