Extending two families of maximum rank distance codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we provide a large family of rank-metric codes, which contains properly the codes recently found by Longobardi and Zanella (2021) and by Longobardi, Marino, Trombetti and Zhou (2021). These codes are $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$-linear of dimension $2$ in the space of linearized polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$, where $t$ is any integer greater than $2$, and we prove that they are maximum rank distance codes. For $t\ge 5$, we determine their equivalence classes and these codes turn out to be inequivalent to any other construction known so far, and hence they are really new.
On symmetric and Hermitian rank distance codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\cal M$ denote the set ${\cal S}_{n, q}$ of $n \times n$ symmetric matrices with entries in ${\rm GF}(q)$ or the set ${\cal H}_{n, q^2}$ of $n \times n$ Hermitian matrices whose elements are in ${\rm GF}(q^2)$. Then $\cal M$ equipped with the rank distance $d_r$ is a metric space. We investigate $d$-codes in $({\cal M}, d_r)$ and construct $d$-codes whose sizes are larger than the corresponding additive bounds. In the Hermitian case, we show the existence of an $n$-code of $\cal M$, $n$ even and $n/2$ odd, of size $\left(3q^{n}-q^{n/2}\right)/2$, and of a $2$-code of size $q^6+ q(q-1)(q^4+q^2+1)/2$, for $n = 3$. In the symmetric case, if $n$ is odd or if $n$ and $q$ are both even, we provide better upper bound on the size of a $2$-code. In the case when $n = 3$ and $q>2$, a $2$-code of size $q^4+q^3+1$ is exhibited. This provides the first infinite family of $2$-codes of symmetric matrices whose size is larger than the largest possible additive $2$-code.

Scattered subspaces and related codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
After a seminal paper by Shekeey (2016), a connection between maximum $h$-scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V(r,q^n)$ and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes has been established in the extremal cases $h=1$ and $h=r-1$. In this paper, we propose a connection for any $h\in\{1,\ldots,r-1\}$, extending and unifying all the previously known ones. As a consequence, we obtain examples of non-square MRD codes which are not equivalent to generalized Gabidulin or twisted Gabidulin codes. Up to equivalence, we classify MRD codes having the same parameters as the ones in our connection. Also, we determine the weight distribution of codes related to the geometric counterpart of maximum $h$-scattered subspaces.

Connections between scattered linear sets and MRD-codes
The aim of this paper is to survey on the known results on maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes. In particular, we investigate the link between these two areas. In "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016) Sheekey showed how maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ define square MRD-codes. Later in "Maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes" (2017) maximum scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n)$, $r>2$, were used to construct non square MRD-codes. Here, we point out a new relation regarding the other direction. We also provide an alternative proof of the well-known Blokhuis-Lavrauw's bound for the rank of maximum scattered linear sets shown in "Scattered spaces with respect to a spread in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$" (2000).

A new family of maximum scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the example of linear set presented by the last two authors in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019) to a more general family, proving that such linear sets are maximum scattered when $q$ is odd and, apart from a special case, they are are new. This solves an open problem posed in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019). As a consequence of Sheekey's results in "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016), this family yields to new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$.

On the list decodability of Rank Metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k,n,m \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ integers such that $k\leq n \leq m$, let $\mathrm{G}_{n,k}\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ be a Delsarte-Gabidulin code. Wachter-Zeh proven that codes belonging to this family cannot be efficiently list decoded for any radius $τ$, providing $τ$ is large enough. This achievement essentially relies on proving a lower bound for the list size of some specific words in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n \setminus \mathrm{G}_{n,k}$. In 2016, Raviv and Wachter-Zeh improved this bound in a special case, i.e. when $n\mid m$. As a consequence, they were able to detect infinite families of Delsarte-Gabidulin codes that cannot be efficiently list decoded at all. In this article we determine similar lower bounds for Maximum Rank Distance codes belonging to a wider class of examples, containing Generalized Gabidulin codes, Generalized Twisted Gabidulin codes, and examples recently described by the first author and Yue Zhou. By exploiting arguments suchlike those used in the above mentioned papers, when $n\mid m$, we also show infinite families of generalized Gabidulin codes that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to $\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+1$, where $d$ is its minimum distance. Nonetheless, in all other examples belonging to above mentioned class, we detect infinite families that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to $\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+2$, where $d$ is its minimum distance. Finally, relying on the properties of a set of subspace trinomials recently presented by McGuire and Mueller, we are able to prove that any rank metric code of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ of order $q^{kn}$ with $n$ dividing $m$, such that $4n-3$ is a square in $\mathbb{Z}$ and containing $\mathrm{G}_{n,2}$, is not efficiently list decodable at some values of the radius $τ$.

MRD Codes: Constructions and Connections
This preprint is of a chapter to appear in {\it Combinatorics and finite fields: Difference sets, polynomials, pseudorandomness and applications. Radon Series on Computational and Applied Mathematics}, K.-U. Schmidt and A. Winterhof (eds.). Rank-metric codes are codes consisting of matrices with entries in a finite field, with the distance between two matrices being the rank of their difference. Codes with maximum size for a fixed minimum distance are called Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes. Such codes were constructed and studied independently by Delsarte (1978), Gabidulin (1985), Roth (1991), and Cooperstein (1998). Rank-metric codes have seen renewed interest in recent years due to their applications in random linear network coding. MRD codes also have interesting connections to other topics such as semifields (finite nonassociative division algebras), finite geometry, linearized polynomials, and cryptography. In this chapter we will survey the known constructions and applications of MRD codes, and present some open problems.

Several classes of optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 581 (2019), 128-144 • View PublicationBIB
Four constructions for Ferrers diagram rank-metric (FDRM) codes are presented. The first one makes use of a characterization on generator matrices of a class of systematic maximum rank distance codes. By introducing restricted Gabidulin codes, the second construction is presented, which unifies many known constructions for FDRM codes. The third and fourth constructions are based on two different ways to represent elements of a finite field $\mathbb F_{q^m}$ (vector representation and matrix representation). Each of these constructions produces optimal codes with different diagrams and parameters.

Binary additive MRD codes with minimum distance n-1 must contain a semifield spread set
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove a result on the structure of the elements of an additive {\it maximum rank distance (MRD) code} over the field of order two, namely that in some cases such codes must contain a semifield spread set. We use this result to classify additive MRD codes in $M_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ with minimum distance $n-1$ for $n\leq 6$. Furthermore we present a computational classification of additive MRD codes in $M_4(\mathbb{F}_3)$. The computational evidence indicates that MRD codes of minimum distance $n-1$ are much more rare than MRD codes of minimum distance $n$, i.e. semifield spread sets. In all considered cases, each equivalence class has a known algebraic construction.

Identifiers for MRD-codes
Published in Linar Algebra Appl. 575 (2019), 66-86 • View PublicationBIB
For any admissible value of the parameters $n$ and $k$ there exist $[n,k]$-Maximum Rank distance ${\mathbb F}_q$-linear codes. Indeed, it can be shown that if field extensions large enough are considered, almost all rank distance codes are MRD. On the other hand, very few families up to equivalence of such codes are currently known. In the present paper we study some invariants of MRD codes and evaluate their value for the known families, providing a new characterization of generalized twisted Gabidulin codes.

Puncturing maximum rank distance codes
We investigate punctured maximum rank distance codes in cyclic models for bilinear forms of finite vector spaces. In each of these models we consider an infinite family of linear maximum rank distance codes obtained by puncturing generalized twisted Gabidulin codes. We calculate the automorphism group of such codes and we prove that this family contains many codes which are not equivalent to any generalized Gabidulin code. This solves a problem posed recently by Sheekey in [30].

Constructions for optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Optimal rank-metric codes in Ferrers diagrams can be used to construct good subspace codes. Such codes consist of matrices having zeros at certain fixed positions. This paper generalizes the known constructions for Ferrers diagram rank-metric (FDRM) codes. Via a criteria for linear maximum rank distance (MRD) codes, an explicit construction for a class of systematic MRD codes is presented, which is used to produce new optimal FDRM codes. By exploring subcodes of Gabidulin codes, if each of the rightmost $δ-1$ columns in Ferrers diagram $\cal F$ has at least $n-r$ dots, where $r$ is taken in a range, then the conditions that an FDRM code in $\cal F$ is optimal are established. The known combining constructions for FDRM code are generalized by introducing the concept of proper combinations of Ferrers diagrams.

Maximal Ferrers Diagram Codes: Constructions and Genericity Considerations
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper investigates the construction of rank-metric codes with specified Ferrers diagram shapes. These codes play a role in the multilevel construction for subspace codes. A conjecture from 2009 provides an upper bound for the dimension of a rank-metric code with given specified Ferrers diagram shape and rank distance. While the conjecture in its generality is wide open, several cases have been established in the literature. This paper contributes further cases of Ferrers diagrams and ranks for which the conjecture holds true. In addition, the proportion of maximal Ferrers diagram codes within the space of all rank-metric codes with the same shape and dimension is investigated. Special attention is being paid to MRD codes. It is shown that for growing field size the limiting proportion depends highly on the Ferrers diagram. For instance, for $[m\times 2]$-MRD codes with rank~$2$ this limiting proportion is close to $1/e$.

Classifying optimal binary subspace codes of length 8, constant dimension 4 and minimum distance 6
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximum size $A_2(8,6;4)$ of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=8$, minimum subspace distance $d=6$, and constant dimension $k=4$ is $257$, where the $2$ isomorphism types are extended lifted maximum rank distance codes. In finite geometry terms the maximum number of solids in $\operatorname{PG}(7,2)$, mutually intersecting in at most a point, is $257$. The result was obtained by combining the classification of substructures with integer linear programming techniques. This implies that the maximum size $A_2(8,6)$ of a binary mixed-dimension code of packet length $8$ and minimum subspace distance $6$ is $257$ as well.

A new family of MRD codes in $\mathbb F_q^{2n\times2n}$ with right and middle nuclei $\mathbb F_{q^n}$
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory 65(2): 1054-1062, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a new family of maximum rank distance (MRD for short) codes in $\mathbb F_{q}^{2n\times 2n}$ of minimum distance $2\leq d\leq 2n$. In particular, when $d=2n$, we can show that the corresponding semifield is exactly a Hughes-Kleinfeld semifield. The middle and right nuclei of these MRD codes are both equal to $\mathbb F_{q^n}$. We also prove that the MRD codes of minimum distance $2<d<2n$ in this family are inequivalent to all known ones. The equivalence between any two members of this new family is also determined.

Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct infinite families of non-linear maximum rank distance codes by using the setting of bilinear forms of a finite vector space. We also give a geometric description of such codes by using the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries and we show that these families contain the non-linear maximum rank distance codes recently provided by Cossidente, Marino and Pavese.

Hermitian rank distance codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X=X(n,q)$ be the set of $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$. It is well known that $X$ gives rise to a metric translation association scheme whose classes are induced by the rank metric. We study $d$-codes in this scheme, namely subsets $Y$ of $X$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in Y$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove bounds on the size of a $d$-code and show that, under certain conditions, the inner distribution of a $d$-code is determined by its parameters. Except if $n$ and $d$ are both even and $4\le d\le n-2$, constructions of $d$-codes are given, which are optimal among the $d$-codes that are subgroups of $(X,+)$. This work complements results previously obtained for several other types of matrices over finite fields.

Covering Radius of Matrix Codes Endowed with the Rank Metric
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study properties and invariants of matrix codes endowed with the rank metric, and relate them to the covering radius. We introduce new tools for the analysis of rank-metric codes, such as puncturing and shortening constructions. We give upper bounds on the covering radius of a code by applying different combinatorial methods. We apply the various bounds to the classes of maximal rank distance and quasi maximal rank distance codes.

Based on this result, we obtain the classification of the following closely related combinatorial objects: Vector space partitions of $PG(6,2)$ of type $(3^{16} 4^1)$, binary $3\times 4$ MRD codes of minimum rank distance $3$, and subspace codes with parameters $(7,17,6)_2$ and $(7,34,5)_2$.
