Regular fat linear sets
In this work, we introduce $(r,i)$-regular fat linear sets, which are defined as linear sets containing exactly $r$ points of weight $i$ and all other points of weight one. This notion generalizes and unifies existing constructions; scattered linear sets, clubs, and other previously studied families are special cases. We present new classes of regular fat linear sets in PG$(k-1,q^n)$ for composite $n$ and study their equivalence classes. Finally, we show that regular fat linear sets naturally yield three-weight rank-metric codes, which we use to obtain bounds on their parameters.
Towards the classification of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$
Every maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$ is the projection of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subgeometry $Σ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(4,q^5)$ from a plane $Γ$ external to the secant variety to $Σ$. The pair $(Γ,Σ)$ will be called a projecting configuration for the linear set. The projecting configurations for the only known maximum scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$, namely those of pseudoregulus and LP type, have been characterized in the literature by B. Csajbók, C. Zanella in 2016 and by C. Zanella, F. Zullo in 2020. Let $(Γ,Σ)$ be a projecting configuration for a maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$, let $σ$ be a generator of $\mathbb{G}=\mathrm{P}Γ\mathrm{L}(5,q^5)_Σ$, and $A=Γ\capΓ^{σ^4}$, $B=Γ\capΓ^{σ^3}$. If $A$ and $B$ are not both points, then the projected linear set is of pseudoregulus type. Then, suppose that they are points. The rank of a point $X$ is the vectorial dimension of the span of the orbit of $X$ under the action of $\mathbb{G}$. In this paper, by investigating the geometric properties of projecting configurations, it is proved that if at least one of the points $A$ and $B$ has rank 5, the associated maximum scattered linear set must be of LP type. Then, if a maximum scattered linear set of a new type exists, it must be such that $\mathrm{rk} A=\mathrm{rk} B=4$. In this paper we derive two possible polynomial forms that such a linear set must have. An exhaustive analysis by computer shows that for $q\leq 25$, no new maximum scattered linear set exists.
New scattered linearized quadrinomials
Let $1<t<n$ be integers, where $t$ is a divisor of $n$. An R-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomial is a $\mathbb F_q$-linearized polynomial $f$ in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ that satisfies the condition that for all $x,y\in\mathbb F_{q^n}^*$ such that $x/y\in\mathbb F_{q^t}$, if $f(x)/x=f(y)/y$, then $x/y\in\mathbb F_q$; $f$ is called scattered if this implication holds for all $x,y\in\mathbb F_{q^n}^*$. Two polynomials in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ are said to be equivalent if their graphs are in the same orbit under the action of the group $ΓL(2,q^n)$. For $n>8$ only three families of scattered polynomials in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ are known: $(i)$~monomials of pseudoregulus type, $(ii)$~binomials of Lunardon-Polverino type, and $(iii)$~a family of quadrinomials defined in [1,10] and extended in [8,13]. In this paper we prove that the polynomial $\varphi_{m,q^J}=X^{q^{J(t-1)}}+X^{q^{J(2t-1)}}+m(X^{q^J}-X^{q^{J(t+1)}})\in\mathbb F_{q^{2t}}[X]$, $q$ odd, $t\ge3$ is R-$q^t$-partially scattered for every value of $m\in\mathbb F_{q^t}^*$ and $J$ coprime with $2t$. Moreover, for every $t>4$ and $q>5$ there exist values of $m$ for which $\varphi_{m,q}$ is scattered and new with respect to the polynomials mentioned in $(i)$, $(ii)$ and $(iii)$ above. The related linear sets are of $ΓL$-class at least two.
On the stabilizer of the graph of linear functions over finite fields
In this paper we will study the action of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^{2 \times 2}$ on the graph of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear function of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ into itself. In particular we will see that, under certain combinatorial assumptions, its stabilizer (together with the sum and product of matrices) is a field. We will also see some examples for which this does not happen. Moreover, we will establish a connection between such a stabilizer and the right idealizer of the rank-metric code defined by the linear function and give some structural results in the case in which the polynomials are partially scattered.

In this paper we present results concerning the stabilizer $G_f$ in $\mathrm{GL}(2,q^n)$ of the subspace $U_f=\{(x,f(x))\colon x\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]\}$, $f(x)$ a scattered linearized polynomial in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$. Each $G_f$ contains the $q-1$ maps $(x,y)\mapsto(ax,ay)$, $a\in\mathbb F_{q}^*$. By virtue of the results of Beard (1972) and Willett (1973), the matrices in $G_f$ are simultaneously diagonalizable. This has several consequences: $(i)$ the polynomials such that $|G_f|>q-1$ have a standard form of type $\sum_{j=0}^{n/t-1}a_jx^{q^{s+jt}}$ for some $s$ and $t$ such that $(s,t)=1$, $t>1$ a divisor of $n$; $(ii)$ this standard form is essentially unique; $(iii)$ for $n>2$ and $q>3$, the translation plane $\cal A_f$ associated with $f(x)$ admits nontrivial affine homologies if and only if $|G_f|>q-1$, and in that case those with axis through the origin form two groups of cardinality $(q^t-1)/(q-1)$ that exchange axes and coaxes; $(iv)$ no plane of type $\cal A_f$, $f(x)$ a scattered polynomial not of pseudoregulus type, is a generalized André plane.

Lunardon and Polverino construct a translation plane starting from a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$. In this paper a similar construction of a translation plane $\mathcal A_f$ obtained from any scattered linearized polynomial $f(x)$ in $\mathbb F_{q^t}[x]$ is described and investigated. A class of quasifields giving rise to such planes is defined. Denote by $U_f$ the $\mathbb F_q$-subspace of $\mathbb F_{q^t}^2$ associated with $f(x)$. If $f(x)$ and $f'(x)$ are scattered, then $\mathcal A_f$ and $\mathcal A_{f'}$ are isomorphic if and only if $U_f$ and $U_{f'}$ belong to the same orbit under the action of $Γ\mathrm L(2,q^t)$. This gives rise to as many distinct translation planes as there are inequivalent scattered linearized polynomials. In particular, for any scattered linear set $L$ of maximum rank in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$ there are $c_Γ(L)$ pairwise non-isomorphic translation planes, where $c_Γ(L)$ denotes the $Γ\mathrm L$-class of $L$, as defined by Csajbók, Marino and Polverino. A result by Jha and Johnson allows to describe the automorphism groups of the planes obtained from the linear sets not of pseudoregulus type defined by Lunardon and Polverino.

A linearized polynomial $f(x)\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$ is called scattered if for any $y,z\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$, the condition $zf(y)-yf(z)=0$ implies that $y$ and $z$ are $\mathbb F_{q}$-linearly dependent. In this paper two generalizations of the notion of a scattered linearized polynomial are defined and investigated. Let $t$ be a nontrivial positive divisor of $n$. By weakening the property defining a scattered linearized polynomial, L-$q^t$-partially scattered and R-$q^t$-partially scattered linearized polynomials are introduced in such a way that the scattered linearized polynomials are precisely those which are both L-$q^t$- and R-$q^t$-partially scattered. Also, connections between partially scattered polynomials, linear sets and rank metric codes are exhibited.

A class of scattered linearized polynomials covering infinitely many field extensions is exhibited. More precisely, the $q$-polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^6}$, $q \equiv 1\pmod 4$ described in arXiv:1906.05611, arXiv:1910.02278 is generalized for any even $n\ge6$ to an $\mathbb F_q$-linear automorphism $ψ(x)$ of $\mathbb F_q^n$ of order $n$. Such $ψ(x)$ and some functional powers of it are proved to be scattered. In particular this provides new maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for $n=8,10$. The polynomials described in this paper lead to a new infinite family of MRD-codes in $\mathbb F_q^{n\times n}$ with minimum distance $n-1$ for any odd $q$ if $n\equiv0\pmod4$ and any $q\equiv1\pmod4$ if $n\equiv2\pmod4$.

We generalize the example of linear set presented by the last two authors in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019) to a more general family, proving that such linear sets are maximum scattered when $q$ is odd and, apart from a special case, they are are new. This solves an open problem posed in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019). As a consequence of Sheekey's results in "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016), this family yields to new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$.

A linearized polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ is called scattered when for any $t,x\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$, the condition $xf(t)-tf(x)=0$ holds if and only if $x$ and $t$ are $\mathbb F_q$-linearly dependent. General conditions for linearized polynomials over $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ to be scattered can be deduced from the recent results in [4,7,15,19]. Some of them are based on the Dickson matrix associated with a linearized polynomial. Here a new condition involving Dickson matrices is stated. This condition is then applied to the Lunardon-Polverino binomial $x^{q^s}+δx^{q^{n-s}}$, allowing to prove that for any $n$ and $s$, if $\mathbb N_{q^n/q}(δ)=1$, then the binomial is not scattered. Also, a necessary and sufficient condition for $x^{q^s}+bx^{q^{2s}}$ to be scattered is shown which is stated in terms of a special plane algebraic curve.

In this paper we investigate the geometric properties of the configuration consisting of a $k$-subspace $Γ$ and a canonical subgeometry $Σ$ in $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, with $Γ\capΣ=\emptyset$. The idea motivating is that such properties are reflected in the algebraic structure of the linear set which is projection of $Σ$ from the vertex $Γ$. In particular we deal with the maximum scattered linear sets of the line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ found by Lunardon and Polverino and recently generalized by Sheekey. Our aim is to characterize this family by means of the properties of the vertex of the projection as done by Csajbók and the first author of this paper for linear sets of pseudoregulus type. With reference to such properties, we construct new examples of scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$, yielding also to new examples of MRD-codes in $\mathbb F_q^{6\times 6}$ with left idealiser isomorphic to $\mathbb F_{q^6}$.
A class of linear sets in PG(1,q^5)
The maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^n)$ have been completely classified for $n \le 4$ by Csajbók-Zanella and Lavrauw-Van de Voorde. Here a wide class of linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ is studied which depends on two parameters. Conditions for the existence, in this class, of possible new maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ are exhibited.
A new family of MRD-codes
We introduce a family of linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{2n})$ arising from maximum scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q^{n})$. For $n=3,4$ and for certain values of the parameters we show that these linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{2n})$ are maximum scattered and they yield new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$ for $q>2$ and with parameters $(8,8,q;7)$ for $q$ odd.
Maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^4)$
There are two known families of maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in $PG(1,q^t)$: the linear sets of pseudoregulus type and for $t\geq 4$ the scattered linear sets found by Lunardon and Polverino. For $t=4$ we show that these are the only maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets and we describe the orbits of these linear sets under the groups $PGL(2,q^4)$ and $PΓL(2,q^4)$.

Let $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ be the projective line over the endomorphism ring $E=End_q({\mathbb F}_{q^t})$ of the $\mathbb F_q$-vector space ${\mathbb F}_{q^t}$. As is well known there is a bijection $Ψ:\mathrm{PG}(1,E)\rightarrow{\cal G}_{2t,t,q}$ with the Grassmannian of the $(t-1)$-subspaces in $\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q)$. In this paper along with any $\mathbb F_q$-linear set $L$ of rank $t$ in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$, determined by a $(t-1)$-dimensional subspace $T^Ψ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q)$, a subset $L_T$ of $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ is investigated. Some properties of linear sets are expressed in terms of the projective line over the ring $E$. In particular the attention is focused on the relationship between $L_T$ and the set $L'_T$, corresponding via $Ψ$ to a collection of pairwise skew $(t-1)$-dimensional subspaces, with $T\in L'_T$, each of which determine $L$. This leads among other things to a characterization of the linear sets of pseudoregulus type. It is proved that a scattered linear set $L$ related to $T\in\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ is of pseudoregulus type if and only if there exists a projectivity $\varphi$ of $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ such that $L_T^\varphi=L'_T$.
On scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$
Scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$ have been defined and investigated in [G. Lunardon, G. Marino, O. Polverino, R. Trombetti: Maximum scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type and the Segre Variety ${\cal S}_{n,n}$. J. Algebr. Comb. 39 (2014), 807--831.; G. Donati, N. Durante: Scattered linear sets generated by collineations between pencils of lines. J. Algebr. Comb. 40 (2014), 1121-1134]. The aim of this paper is to continue such an investigation. Properties of a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type, say $L$, are proved by means of three different ways to obtain $L$: (i) as projection of a $q$-order canonical subgeometry [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino: Translation ovoids of orthogonal polar spaces. Forum Math. 16 (2004), 663-669], (ii) as a set whose image under the field reduction map is the hypersurface of degree $t$ in $\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q)$ studied in [M. Lavrauw, J. Sheekey, C. Zanella: On embeddings of minimum dimension of $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)\times \mathrm{PG}(n,q)$. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 74 (2015), 427-440], (iii) as exterior splash, by the correspondence described in [M. Lavrauw, J. Sheekey, C. Zanella: On embeddings of minimum dimension of $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)\times \mathrm{PG}(n,q)$. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 74 (2015), 427-440]. In particular, given a canonical subgeometry $Σ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(t-1,q^t)$, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the projection of $Σ$ with center a $(t-3)$-subspace to be a linear set of pseudoregulus type. Furthermore, the $q$-order sublines are counted and geometrically described.
On the equivalence of linear sets
Let $L$ be a linear set of pseudoregulus type in a line $\ell$ in $Σ^*=\mathrm{PG}(t-1,q^t)$, $t=5$ or $t>6$. We provide examples of $q$-order canonical subgeometries $Σ_1,\, Σ_2 \subset Σ^*$ such that there is a $(t-3)$-space $Γ\subset Σ^*\setminus (Σ_1 \cup Σ_2 \cup \ell)$ with the property that for $i=1,2$, $L$ is the projection of $Σ_i$ from center $Γ$ and there exists no collineation $φ$ of $Σ^*$ such that $Γ^φ=Γ$ and $Σ_1^φ=Σ_2$.
Condition (ii) given in Theorem 3 in Lavrauw and Van de Voorde (Des. Codes Cryptogr. 56:89-104, 2010) states the existence of a collineation between the projecting configurations (each of them consisting of a center and a subgeometry), which give rise by means of projections to two linear sets. It follows from our examples that this condition is not necessary for the equivalence of two linear sets as stated there. We characterize the linear sets for which the condition above is actually necessary.

In this paper results are proved with applications to the orbits of $(n-1)$-dimensional subspaces disjoint from a regulus $\cR$ of $(n-1)$-subspaces in $\PG(2n-1,q)$, with respect to the subgroup of $\PGL(2n,q)$ fixing $\cR$. Such results have consequences on several aspects of finite geometry. First of all, a necessary condition for an $(n-1)$-subspace $U$ and a regulus $\cR$ of $(n-1)$-subspaces to be extendable to a Desarguesian spread is given. The description also allows to improve results in \cite{BaJa12} on the André-Bruck-Bose representation of a $q$-subline in $\PG(2,q^n)$. Furthermore, the results in this paper are applied to the classification of linear sets, in particular clubs.

We define the splash of a subgeometry on a projective line, extending the definition of \cite{BaJa13} to general dimension and prove that a splash is always a linear set. We also prove the converse: each linear set on a projective line is the splash of some subgeometry. Therefore an alternative description of linear sets on a projective line is obtained. We introduce the notion of a club of rank $r$, generalizing the definition from \cite{FaSz2006}, and show that clubs correspond to tangent splashes. We determine the condition for a splash to be a scattered linear set and give a characterization of clubs, or equivalently of tangent splashes. We also investigate the equivalence problem for tangent splashes and determine a necessary and sufficient condition for two tangent splashes to be (projectively) equivalent.

Let $L=\mathbb F_{q^n}$ be a finite field and let $F=\mathbb F_q$ be a subfield of $L$.
Consider $L$ as a vector space over $F$ and the associated projective space that is isomorphic to ${\mathrm{PG}}(n-1,q)$.
The properties of the projective mapping induced by $x\mapsto x^{-1}$ have been studied in \cite{Cs13,Fa02,Ha83,He85,Bu95}, where it is proved that the image of any line is a normal rational curve in some subspace.
In this note a more detailed geometric description is achieved.
Consequences are found related to mixed partitions of the projective spaces; in particular, it is proved that for any positive integer $k$, if $q\ge2^k-1$, then there are partitions of ${\mathrm{PG}}(2^k-1,q)$ in normal rational curves of degree $2^k-1$.
For smaller $q$ the same construction gives partitions in $(q+1)$-tuples of independent points.
