The Geometry of Codes for Random Access in DNA Storage
Effective and reliable data retrieval is critical for the feasibility of DNA storage, and the development of random access efficiency plays a key role in its practicality and reliability. In this paper, we study the Random Access Problem, which asks to compute the expected number of samples one needs in order to recover an information strand. Unlike previous work, we took a geometric approach to the problem, aiming to understand which geometric structures lead to codes that perform well in terms of reducing the random access expectation (Balanced Quasi-Arcs). As a consequence, two main results are obtained. The first is a construction for $k=3$ that outperforms previous constructions aiming to reduce the random access expectation. The second, exploiting a result from~\cite{gruica2024reducing}, is the proof of a conjecture from~\cite{bar2023cover} for rate $1/2$ codes in any dimension.

On a conjecture about maximum scattered subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}\times \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Maximum scattered subspaces are not only objects of intrinsic interest in finite geometry but also powerful tools for the construction of MRD-codes, projective two-weight codes, and strongly regular graphs. In 2018 Csajbók, Marino, Polverino, and Zanella introduced a new family of maximum scattered subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_{q^6} \times \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ arising from polynomials of type $f_b(x)=bx^q+x^{q^4}$ for certain choices of $b \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$. Throughout characterizations for $f_{b_2}(x)$ and $f_{b_1}(x)$ giving rise to equivalent maximum scattered subspaces, the authors conjectured that the portion of new and inequivalent maximum scattered subspaces obtained in this way is quite large. In this paper first we find necessary and sufficient conditions for $b$ to obtain a maximum scattered subspace. Such conditions were found independently with different techniques also by Polverino and Zullo 2019. Then we prove the conjecture on the number of new and inequivalent maximum scattered subspaces of this family.
New examples of maximal curves with low genus

We investigate the Jacobian decomposition of some algebraic curves over finite fields with genus $4$, $5$ and $10$. As a corollary, explicit equations for curves that are either maximal or minimal over the finite field with $p^2$ elements are obtained for infinitely many $p$'s. Lists of small $p$'s for which maximality holds are provided. In some cases we describe the automorphism group of the curve.
MRD-codes arising from the trinomial $x^q+x^{q^3}+cx^{q^5}\in\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[x]$
In [10], the existence of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear MRD-codes of $\mathbb{F}_q^{6\times 6}$, with dimension $12$, minimum distance $5$ and left idealiser isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}$, defined by a trinomial of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[x]$, when $q$ is odd and $q\equiv 0,\pm 1\pmod 5$, has been proved. In this paper we show that this family produces $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear MRD-codes of $\mathbb{F}_q^{6\times 6}$, with the same properties, also in the remaining $q$ odd cases, but not in the $q$ even case. These MRD-codes are not equivalent to the previously known MRD-codes. We also prove that the corresponding maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$ are not $\mathrm{P}Γ\mathrm{L}(2,q^6)$-equivalent to any previously known scattered linear set.

Towards the full classification of exceptional scattered polynomials
Let $f(X) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^r}[X]$ be a $q$-polynomial. If the $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U=\{(x^{q^t},f(x)) \mid x \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}\}$ defines a maximum scattered linear set, then we call $f(X)$ a scattered polynomial of index $t$. The asymptotic behaviour of scattered polynomials of index $t$ is an interesting open problem. In this sense, exceptional scattered polynomials of index $t$ are those for which $U$ is a maximum scattered linear set in ${\rm PG}(1,q^{mr})$ for infinitely many $m$. The complete classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ (for $q>5$) and of index 1 were obtained by Bartoli and Zhou. In this paper we complete the classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ for $q \leq 4$. Also, some partial classifications are obtained for arbitrary $t$. As a consequence, the complete classification of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $2$ is given.

A class of linear sets in PG(1,q^5)
The maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^n)$ have been completely classified for $n \le 4$ by Csajbók-Zanella and Lavrauw-Van de Voorde. Here a wide class of linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ is studied which depends on two parameters. Conditions for the existence, in this class, of possible new maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ are exhibited.

Bent functions from triples of permutation polynomials
We provide constructions of bent functions using triples of permutations. This approach is due to Mesnager. In general, involutions have been mostly considered in such a machinery; we provide some other suitable triples of permutations, using monomials, binomials, trinomials, and quadrinomials.
Weierstrass semigroups at every point of the Suzuki curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we explicitly determine the structure of the Weierstrass semigroups $H(P)$ for any point $P$ of the Suzuki curve $\mathcal{S}_q$. As the point $P$ varies, exactly two possibilities arise for $H(P)$: one for the $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points (already known in the literature), and one for all remaining points. For this last case a minimal set of generators of $H(P)$ is also provided. As an application, we construct dual one-point codes from an $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}\setminus\fq$-point whose parameters are better in some cases than the ones constructed in a similar way from an $\fq$-rational point.
Pure gaps on curves with many rational places
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 53 (2018), 287 - 308 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the algebraic curve defined by $y^m = f(x)$ where $m \geq 2$ and $f(x)$ is a rational function over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We extend the concept of pure gap to {\bf c}-gap and obtain a criterion to decide when an $s$-tuple is a {\bf c}-gap at $s$ rational places on the curve. As an application, we obtain many families of pure gaps at two rational places on curves with many rational places.
Linear codes from Denniston maximal arcs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct functional codes from Denniston maximal arcs. For $q=2^{4n+2}$ we obtain linear codes with parameters $[(\sqrt{q}-1)(q+1),5,d]_q$ where $\lim_{q \to +\infty} d=(\sqrt{q}-1)q-3\sqrt{q}$. We also find for $q=16,32$ a number of linear codes which appear to have larger minimum distance with respect to the known codes with same length and dimension.
AG codes and AG quantum codes from cyclic extensions of the Suzuki and Ree curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate several types of linear codes constructed from two families $\tilde{\mathcal S}_q$ and $\tilde{\mathcal R}_q$ of maximal curves over finite fields recently constructed by Skabelund as cyclic covers of the Suzuki and Ree curves. Plane models for such curves are provided, and the Weierstrass semigroup $H(P)$ at an $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-rational point $P$ is shown to be symmetric.

AG codes and AG quantum codes from the GGS curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, algebraic-geometric (AG) codes associated with the GGS maximal curve are investigated. The Weierstrass semigroup at all $\mathbb F_{q^2}$-rational points of the curve is determined; the Feng-Rao designed minimum distance is computed for infinite families of such codes, as well as the automorphism group. As a result, some linear codes with better relative parameters with respect to one-point Hermitian codes are discovered. Classes of quantum and convolutional codes are provided relying on the constructed AG codes.

Some Ree and Suzuki curves are not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Deligne-Lusztig curves associated to the algebraic groups of type $^2A_2$, $^2B_2$, and $^2G_2$ are classical examples of maximal curves over finite fields. The Hermitian curve $\mathcal H_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^2}$, for any prime power $q$, the Suzuki curve $\mathcal S_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^4}$, for $q=2^{2h+1}$, $h\geq1$ and the Ree curve $\mathcal R_q$ is maximal over $\mathbb F_{q^6}$, for $q=3^{2h+1}$, $h\geq0$. In this paper we show that $\mathcal S_8$ is not Galois covered by $\mathcal H_{64}$. We also give a proof for an unpublished result due to Rains and Zieve stating that $\mathcal R_3$ is not Galois covered by $\mathcal H_{27}$. Furthermore, we determine the spectrum of genera of Galois subcovers of $\mathcal H_{27}$, and we point out that some Galois subcovers of $\mathcal R_3$ are not Galois subcovers of $\mathcal H_{27}$.
