Characterising Clifford parallelisms among Clifford-like parallelisms
Published in Beiträge Algebra Geom. 62 (2021), 37-54 • View PublicationBIB
We recall the notions of Clifford and Clifford-like parallelisms in a $3$-dimensional projective double space. In a previous paper the authors proved that the linear part of the full automorphism group of a Clifford parallelism is the same for all Clifford-like parallelisms which can be associated to it. In this paper, instead, we study the action of such group on parallel classes thus achieving our main results on characterisation of the Clifford parallelisms among Clifford-like ones.

Clifford-like parallelisms
Published in J. Geom. 110 (2019), Article 2 • View PublicationBIB
Given two parallelisms of a projective space we describe a construction, called blending, that yields a (possibly new) parallelism of this space. For a projective double space $(\mathbb{P},\parallel_\ell,\parallel_r)$ over a quaternion skew field we characterise the "Clifford-like" parallelisms, i.e. the blends of the Clifford parallelisms $\parallel_\ell$ and $\parallel_r$, in a geometric and an algebraic way. Finally, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Clifford-like parallelisms that are not Clifford.

Linear sets in the projective line over the endomorphism ring of a finite field

Let $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ be the projective line over the endomorphism ring $E=End_q({\mathbb F}_{q^t})$ of the $\mathbb F_q$-vector space ${\mathbb F}_{q^t}$. As is well known there is a bijection $Ψ:\mathrm{PG}(1,E)\rightarrow{\cal G}_{2t,t,q}$ with the Grassmannian of the $(t-1)$-subspaces in $\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q)$. In this paper along with any $\mathbb F_q$-linear set $L$ of rank $t$ in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$, determined by a $(t-1)$-dimensional subspace $T^Ψ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q)$, a subset $L_T$ of $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ is investigated. Some properties of linear sets are expressed in terms of the projective line over the ring $E$. In particular the attention is focused on the relationship between $L_T$ and the set $L'_T$, corresponding via $Ψ$ to a collection of pairwise skew $(t-1)$-dimensional subspaces, with $T\in L'_T$, each of which determine $L$. This leads among other things to a characterization of the linear sets of pseudoregulus type. It is proved that a scattered linear set $L$ related to $T\in\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ is of pseudoregulus type if and only if there exists a projectivity $\varphi$ of $\mathrm{PG}(1,E)$ such that $L_T^\varphi=L'_T$.
Veldkamp-Space Aspects of a Sequence of Nested Binary Segre Varieties
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincare Comb. Phys. Interact. 2 (2015) 309-333 • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_{(N)} \equiv PG(1,\,2) \times PG(1,\,2) \times \cdots \times PG(1,\,2)$ be a Segre variety that is $N$-fold direct product of projective lines of size three. Given two geometric hyperplanes $H'$ and $H''$ of $S_{(N)}$, let us call the triple $\{H', H'', \overline{H' ΔH''}\}$ the Veldkamp line of $S_{(N)}$. We shall demonstrate, for the sequence $2 \leq N \leq 4$, that the properties of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ are fully encoded in the properties of Veldkamp {\it lines} of $S_{(N-1)}$. Using this property, a complete classification of all types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(4)}$ is provided. Employing the fact that, for $2 \leq N \leq 4$, the (ordinary part of) Veldkamp space of $S_{(N)}$ is $PG(2^N-1,2)$, we shall further describe which types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ lie on a certain hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}_0^+(2^N-1,2) \subset PG(2^N-1,2)$ that contains the $S_{(N)}$ and is invariant under its stabilizer group; in the $N=4$ case we shall also single out those of them that correspond, via the Lagrangian Grassmannian of type $LG(4,8)$, to the set of 2295 maximal subspaces of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(7,2)$.

Lifting of divisible designs
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr., 42 (2007), 1-14 • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to present a construction of $t$-divisible designs for $t>3$, because such divisible designs seem to be missing in the literature. To this end, tools such as finite projective spaces and their algebraic varieties are employed. More precisely, in a first step an abstract construction, called $t$-lifting, is developed. It starts from a set $X$ containing a $t$-divisible design and a group $G$ acting on $X$. Then several explicit examples are given, where $X$ is a subset of $PG(n,q)$ and $G$ is a subgroup of $GL_{n+1}(q)$. In some cases $X$ is obtained from a cone with a Veronesean or an $h$-sphere as its basis. In other examples $X$ arises from a projective embedding of a Witt design. As a result, for any integer $t\geq 2$ infinitely many non-isomorphic $t$-divisible designs are found.

Divisible designs from twisted dual numbers
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 47 (2008), 11-20 • View PublicationBIB
The generalized chain geometry over the local ring $K(ε;σ)$ of twisted dual numbers, where $K$ is a finite field, is interpreted as a divisible design obtained from an imprimitive group action. Its combinatorial properties as well as a geometric model in 4-space are investigated.

Incidence and Combinatorial Properties of Linear Complexes
Published in Results Math. 51 (2008), 261-274 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper a generalisation of the notion of polarity is exhibited which allows to completely describe, in an incidence-geometric way, the linear complexes of $h$-subspaces. A generalised polarity is defined to be a partial map which maps $(h-1)$-subspaces to hyperplanes, satisfying suitable linearity and reciprocity properties. Generalised polarities with the null property give rise to a linear complexes and vice versa. Given that there exists for $h>1$ a linear complex of $h$-subspaces which contains no star --this seems to be an open problem over an arbitrary ground field --the combinatorial structure of a partition of the line set of the projective space into non-geometric spreads of its hyperplanes can be obtained. This line partition has an additional linearity property which turns out to be characteristic.

Diameter preserving surjections in the geometry of matrices
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 429 (2008), 376-386 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a class of graphs subject to certain restrictions, including the finiteness of diameters. Any surjective mapping $φ:Γ\toΓ'$ between graphs from this class is shown to be an isomorphism provided that the following holds: Any two points of $Γ$ are at a distance equal to the diameter of $Γ$ if, and only if, their images are at a distance equal to the diameter of $Γ'$. This result is then applied to the graphs arising from the adjacency relations of spaces of rectangular matrices, spaces of Hermitian matrices, and Grassmann spaces (projective spaces of rectangular matrices).

Veronese Varieties over Fields with non-zero Characteristic: A Survey
Published in Discrete Math., 267 (2003), 159-173 • View PublicationBIB
In the present survey we collect some recent results on nuclei of Veronese varieties and invariant subspaces of normal rational curves. We must assume, however, that the ground field is not "too small", since otherwise a Veronese variety is like dust: "few points" in some "high-dimensional" space.

On bijections that preserve complementarity of subspaces
Published in Discrete Math. 301 (2005), 46-56 • View PublicationBIB
The set $G$ of all $m$-dimensional subspaces of a $2m$-dimensional vector space $V$ is endowed with two relations, complementarity and adjacency. We consider bijections from $G$ onto $G'$, where $G'$ arises from a $2m'$-dimensional vector space $V'$. If such a bijection $φ$ and its inverse leave one of the relations from above invariant, then also the other. In case $m\geq 2$ this yields that $φ$ is induced by a semilinear bijection from $V$ or from the dual space of $V$ onto $V'$. As far as possible, we include also the infinite-dimensional case into our considerations.
Some Constructions of Divisible Designs from Laguerre Geometries
Published in Discrete Math. 301 (2005), 74-82 • View PublicationBIB
In the nineties, A.G. Spera introduced a construction principle for divisible designs. Using this method, we get series of divisible designs from finite Laguerre geometries. We show a close connection between some of these divisible designs and divisible designs whose construction was based on a conic in a plane of a 3-dimensional projective space.

Nuclei of Normal Rational Curves
Published in J. Geom. 69 (2000), 117-130 • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-nucleus of a normal rational curve in PG$(n,F)$ is the intersection over all $k$-dimensional osculating subspaces of the curve ($k\in\{-1,0,...,n-1\}$). It is well known that for characteristic zero all nuclei are empty. In case of characteristic $p>0$ and $# F\geq n$ the number of non-zero digits in the representation of $n+1$ in base $p$ equals the number of distinct nuclei. An explicit formula for the dimensions of $k$-nuclei is given for $# F\geq k+1$.

A Dimension Formula for the Nucleus of a Veronese Variety
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 305 (2000), 191-201 • View PublicationBIB
The nucleus of a Veronese variety is the intersection of all its osculating hyperplanes. Various authors have given necessary and sufficient conditions for the nucleus to be empty. We present an explicit formula for the dimension of this nucleus for arbitrary characteristic of the ground field. As a corollary, we obtain a dimension formula for that subspace in the $t$-th symmetric power of a finite-dimensional vector space $V$ which is spanned by the powers $a^t$ with $\a\in\V$.

The Veronese Surface in PG(5,3) and Witt's 5-$(12,6,1$ Design
Published in J. Comb. Theory Ser. A 84 (1998), 87-94 • View PublicationBIB
A conic of the Veronese surface in PG(5,3) is a quadrangle. If one such quadrangle is replaced with its diagonal triangle, then one obtains a point model $K$ for Witt's 5-$(12,6,1)$ design, the blocks being the hyperplane sections containing more than three (actually six) points of $K$. As such a point model is projectively unique, the present construction yields an easy coordinate-free approach to some results obtained independently by H.S.M. Coxeter and G. Pellegrino, including a projective representation of the Mathieu group $M_{12}$ in PG(5,3).

Giuseppe Veronese and Ernst Witt -- Neighbours in PG(5,3)
Published in Aequationes Math. 58 (1999), 85-92 • View PublicationBIB
Let $P$ be a point of the Veronese surface $\Vcal$ in \PG53. Then thereare four conics of $\Vcal$ through $P$. We show that the internal points of those conics form a 12-cap which is a point model for Witt's 5-$(12,6,1)$ design. In fact, this construction is "dual" to a similar construction that has been established by the author. We give an explicit parametrization of the cap $\Kcal$; the domain is a dual affine plane which arises from \PG23 by removing one point. Thus, as a by--product, we obtain an easy approach to the extended ternary Golay code $G_{12}$. Finally, we discuss some other procedures that yield 12-sets of points from the Veronese surface.

Tetrads of lines spanning PG(7,2)
Published in Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin Volume 20, Number 4 (2013), 735-752 • View PublicationBIB
Our starting point is a very simple one, namely that of a set L_4 of four mutually skew lines in PG(7,2): Under the natural action of the stabilizer group G(L_4) < GL(8,2) the 255 points of PG(7,2) fall into four orbits omega_1, omega_2, omega_3 omega_4; of respective lengths 12, 54, 108, 81: We show that the 135 points in omega_2 \cup omega_4 are the internal points of a hyperbolic quadric H_7 determined by L_4; and that the 81-set omega_4 (which is shown to have a sextic equation) is an orbit of a normal subgroup G_81 isomorphic to (Z_3)^4 of G(L_4): There are 40 subgroups (isomorphic to (Z_3)^3) of G_81; and each such subgroup H < G_81 gives rise to a decomposition of omega_4 into a triplet of 27-sets. We show in particular that the constituents of precisely 8 of these 40 triplets are Segre varieties S_3(2) in PG(7,2): This ties in with the recent finding that each Segre S = S_3(2) in PG(7,2) determines a distinguished Z_3 subgroup of GL(8,2) which generates two sibling copies S'; S" of S.

Divisible Designs, Laguerre Geometry, and Beyond

In these notes we aim at bringing together design theory and projective geometry over a ring. Both disciplines are well established, but the results on the interaction between them seem to be rare and scattered over the literature. Thus our main goal is to present the basics from either side, to develop, or at least sketch, the principal connections between them, and to make recommendations for further reading. There is no attempt to provide encyclopedic coverage with expansive notes and references.
