Decoding Desarguesian spread codes beyond half minimum distance
Spread codes are a well-known family of constant-dimension subspace-metric codes. For constant dimension $k$ and ambient space dimension $n$ being a multiple of $k$, these codes have minimum distance $2k$ and a rich geometric structure. In this paper, we study the decoding capabilities of the Nearest Neighbor Decoder for Desarguesian spread codes, establishing that unique decoding is still achievable beyond half the minimum distance. Motivated by this, we develop a new decoding algorithm to uniquely decode Desarguesian spread codes in the presence of both insertions and deletions, which increase and decrease, respectively, the dimension of the transmitted codeword. Even when the sum of the dimensions of insertions and deletions exceeds half the minimum distance, provided that deletions are of dimension at most $k-2$, the algorithm succeeds with a small decoding failure. We also propose two refinements to this algorithm that, empirically, can handle nearly as many insertions as the Nearest Neighbor Decoder.
On the Codebook Design for NOMA Schemes from Bent Functions
Uplink grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technology for massive connectivity with low latency and high energy efficiency. In code-domain NOMA schemes, the requirements boil down to the design of codebooks that contain a large number of spreading sequences with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) while maintaining low coherence. When employing binary Golay sequences with guaranteed low PAPR in the design, the fundamental problem is to construct a large set of $n$-variable quadratic bent or near-bent functions in a particular form such that the difference of any two is bent for even $n$ or near-bent for odd $n$ to achieve optimally low coherence. In this work, we propose a theoretical construction of NOMA codebooks by applying a recursive approach to those particular quadratic bent functions in smaller dimensions. The proposed construction yields desired NOMA codebooks that contain $6\cdot N$ Golay sequences of length $N=2^{4m}$ for any positive integer $m$ and have the lowest possible coherence $1/\sqrt{N}$.
Decoding Trombetti-Zhou codes: a new syndrome-based decoding approach
In 2019, Trombetti and Zhou introduced a new family of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$. For such codes we propose a new syndrome-based decoding algorithm. It is well known that a syndrome-based decoding approach relies heavily on a parity-check matrix of a linear code. Nonetheless, Trombetti-Zhou codes are not linear over the entire field $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$, but only over its subfield $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$. Due to this lack of linearity, we introduce the notions of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-generator matrix and $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-parity-check matrix for a generic $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-linear rank-metric code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{rn}}$ in analogy with the roles that generator and parity-check matrices play in the context of linear codes. Accordingly, we present an $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-generator matrix and $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-parity-check matrix for Trombetti-Zhou codes as evaluation codes over an $\mathbb{F}_q$-basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$. This relies on the choice of a particular basis called \emph{trace almost dual basis}. Subsequently, denoting by $d$ the minimum distance of the code, we show that if the rank weight $t$ of the error vector is strictly smaller than $\frac{d-1}{2}$, the syndrome-based decoding of Trombetti-Zhou codes can be converted to the decoding of Gabidulin codes of dimension one larger. On the other hand, when $t=\frac{d-1}{2}$, we reduce the decoding to determining the rank of a certain matrix. The complexity of the proposed decoding for Trombetti-Zhou codes is also discussed.

A Further Investigation on Complete Complementary Codes from $q$-ary Functions
This research focuses on constructing $q$-ary functions for complete complementary codes (CCCs) with flexible parameters. Most existing work has primarily identified sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions related to $q$-ary CCCs. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to establish both the necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions, encompassing most existing CCCs constructions as special cases. For $q$-ary CCCs with a length of $q^m$ and a set size of $q^{n+1}$, we begin by analyzing the necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary functions defined over the domain $\mathbb{Z}_q^m$. Additionally, we construct CCCs with lengths given by $L = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$, set sizes given by $K = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{n_i+1}$, and an alphabet size of $ν= \prod_{i=1}^k p_i$, where $p_1 < p_2 < \cdots < p_k$. To achieve these specific parameters, we examine the necessary and sufficient conditions for $ν$-ary functions over the domain $\mathbf{Z}_{p_1}^{m_1} \times \cdots \times \mathbf{Z}_{p_k}^{m_k}$, which is a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_ν^m$ and contains $\prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$ vectors. In this context, $\mathbf{Z}_{p_i}^{m_i} = \{0, 1, \ldots, p_i - 1\}^{m_i}$, and $m$ is the sum of $m_1, m_2, \ldots, m_k$. The $q$-ary and $ν$-ary functions allow us to cover all possible length sequences. However, we find that the proposed $ν$-ary functions are more suitable for generating CCCs with a length of $L = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{m_i}$, particularly when $m_i$ is coprime to $m_j$ for some $1 \leq i \neq j \leq k$. While the proposed $q$-ary functions can also produce CCCs of the same length $L$, the set size and alphabet size become as large as $L$, since in this case, the only choice for $q$ is $L$. In contrast, the proposed $ν$-ary functions yield CCCs with a more flexible set size $K\leq L$ and an alphabet size of $ν<L$.

New Correlation Bound and Construction of Quasi-Complementary Code Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) have attracted sustained research interests for simultaneously supporting more active users in multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems compared to complete complementary codes (CCCs). In this paper, we investigate a novel class of QCSSs composed of multiple CCCs. We derive a new aperiodic correlation lower bound for this type of QCSSs, which is tighter than the existing bounds for QCSSs. We then present a systematic construction of such QCSSs with a small alphabet size and low maximum correlation magnitude, and also show that the constructed aperiodic QCSSs can meet the newly derived bound asymptotically.

The resolution of Niho's last conjecture concerning sequences, codes, and Boolean functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new method is used to resolve a long-standing conjecture of Niho concerning the crosscorrelation spectrum of a pair of maximum length linear recursive sequences of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with relative decimation $d=2^{m+2}-3$, where $m$ is even. The result indicates that there are at most five distinct crosscorrelation values. Equivalently, the result indicates that there are at most five distinct values in the Walsh spectrum of the power permutation $f(x)=x^d$ over a finite field of order $2^{2 m}$ and at most five distinct nonzero weights in the cyclic code of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with two primitive nonzeros $α$ and $α^d$. The method used to obtain this result proves constraints on the number of roots that certain seventh degree polynomials can have on the unit circle of a finite field. The method also works when $m$ is odd, in which case the associated crosscorrelation and Walsh spectra have at most six distinct values.

Cryptographically Strong Permutations from the Butterfly Structure
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present infinite families of permutations of $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2n}}$ with high nonlinearity and boomerang uniformity $4$ from generalized butterfly structures. Both open and closed butterfly structures are considered. It appears, according to experiment results, that open butterflies do not produce permutation with boomerang uniformity $4$. For the closed butterflies, we propose the condition on coefficients $α, β\in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ such that the functions $$V_i := (R_i(x,y), R_i(y,x))$$ with $R_i(x,y)=(x+αy)^{2^i+1}+βy^{2^i+1}$ are permutations of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}^2$ with boomerang uniformity $4$, where $n\geq 1$ is an odd integer and $\gcd(i, n)=1$. The main result in this paper consists of two major parts: the permutation property of $V_i$ is investigated in terms of the univariate form, and the boomerang uniformity is examined in terms of the original bivariate form. In addition, experiment results for $n=3, 5$ indicates that the proposed condition seems to cover all coefficients $α, β\in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ that produce permutations $V_i$ with boomerang uniformity $4$. However, the experiment result shows that the quadratic permutation $V_i$ seems to be affine equivalent to the Gold function. Therefore, unluckily, we may not to obtain new permutations with boomerang uniformity $4$ from the butterfly structure.

A Class of Binomial Permutation Polynomials
In this note, a criterion for a class of binomials to be permutation polynomials is proposed. As a consequence, many classes of binomial permutation polynomials and monomial complete permutation polynomials are obtained. The exponents in these monomials are of Niho type.
