Algorithms for Tight Spans and Tropical Linear Spaces
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation (special issue MEGA 2017) 91 (2019), 116-128 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a new method for computing tropical linear spaces and more general duals of polyhedral subdivisions. It is based on Ganter's algorithm (1984) for finite closure systems.

Tropical Computations in polymake
Published in Algorithmic and experimental methods in algebra, geometry, and number theory, 361-385, Springer, Cham, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We give an overview of recently implemented polymake features for computations in tropical geometry. The main focus is on explicit examples rather than technical explanations. Our computations employ tropical hypersurfaces, moduli of tropical plane curves, tropical linear spaces and Grassmannians, lines on tropical cubic surfaces as well as intersection rings of matroids

The intersection ring of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a particular graded ring structure on the set of all loopfree matroids on a fixed labeled ground set, which occurs naturally in tropical geometry. The product is given by matroid intersection and the additive structure is defined by assigning to each matroid the indicator vector of its chains of flats. We show that this ring is generated in corank one, more precisely that any matroid can be written as a linear combination of products of corank one matroids. Moreover, we prove that a basis for the graded part of rank r matroids is given by the set of nested matroids and that the total number of these is a Eulerian number. Derksen's G-invariant then defines a Z-linear map on this ring, which implies for example that the Tutte polynomial is linear on it as well. Finally we show that the ring is the cohomology ring of the toric variety of the permutohedron and thus fulfills Poincaré duality.
Moduli spaces of rational weighted stable curves and tropical geometry
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma (2016) Vol. 9, e9, 35 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study moduli spaces of rational weighted stable tropical curves, and their connections with the classical Hassett spaces. Given a vector w of weights, the moduli space of tropical w-stable curves can be given the structure of a balanced fan if and only if w has only heavy and light entries. In this case, we can express the moduli space as the Bergman fan of a graphic matroid. Furthermore, we realize the tropical moduli space as a geometric tropicalization, and as a Berkovich skeleton, of the classical moduli space. This builds on previous work of Tevelev, Gibney--Maclagan, and Abramovich--Caporaso--Payne. Finally, we construct the moduli spaces of heavy/light weighted tropical curves as fiber products of unweighted spaces, and explore parallels with the algebraic world.
