Matroid flat counts can have many peaks
We disprove Rota's conjecture that the counts of flats in a matroid according to rank form a unimodal sequence. Furthermore, we show that this sequence can have arbitrarily many peaks. The construction starts by finding a generalized theta graph for which log-concavity fails severely. By taking direct sums, we break log-concavity in many places. We then use Whittle's $q$-lift construction to produce a matroid whose flat counts have many peaks.
Moments of partition statistics, Bell polynomials and Eisenstein-type series
We develop a systematic method to express generating functions for moments of combinatorial statistics in terms of partition traces. We employ an algebraic approach based on the complete Bell polynomials and their inversion formula, alongside an analytic approach via Faà di Bruno's formula. Our approach can be applied to a wide class of combinatorial statistics, such as the largest part of an integer partition, the partition crank and rank, and the unimodal sequence rank.
False and partial Eisenstein series related to unimodal sequences
Motivated by the fact that the classical Jacobi theta function $\vartheta$ is the exponential generating function of the Eisenstein series, we study the exponential Taylor coefficients (in the elliptic variable) of a related natural partial theta function, as well as a false theta function related to the Dedekind eta function. We prove that the space spanned by these objects is closed under differentiation, analogous to the space of quasimodular forms, and that it contains the quasimodular forms themselves. We further provide their Fourier expansions, establish quasimodular completions, and derive a recursive formula for the Taylor coefficients of the logarithm of the unimodal rank generating function, expressed as partition traces of the false and partial objects.
Unimodality of the number of paths per length on polytopes: Examples, counter-examples, and central limit theorem
To solve a linear program, the simplex method follows a path in the graph of a polytope, on which a linear function increases. The length of this path is an key measure of the complexity of the simplex method. Numerous previous articles focused on the longest paths, or, following Borgwardt, computed the average length of a path for certain random polytopes. We detail more precisely how this length is distributed, i.e., how many paths of each length there are.
It was conjectured by De Loera that the number of paths counted according to their length forms a unimodal sequence. We give examples (old and new) for which this holds; but we disprove this conjecture by constructing counterexamples for several classes of polytopes. However, De Loera is "statistically correct": We prove that the length of coherent paths on a random polytope (with vertices chosen uniformly on a sphere) admits a central limit theorem.
Garsia--Remmel $q$-rook numbers are not always unimodal
We show by an explicit example that the Garsia--Remmel $q$-rook numbers of Ferrers boards do not all have unimodal sequences of coefficients. This resolves in the negative a question from 1986 by the aforementioned authors.

We consider two-parameter generalizations of Hecke-Appell type expansions for the generating functions of unimodal and special unimodal sequences. We then determine their explicit representations which involve mixed false theta functions. These results complement recent striking work of Mortenson and Zwegers on the mixed mock modularity of the generalized $U$-function due to Hikami and Lovejoy. As an application, we demonstrate how to recover classical partial theta function identities which appear in Ramanujan's lost notebook and in work of Warnaar.

In this paper, we examine the unimodality and strict unimodality of certain formal bivariate Laurent series with non-negative coefficients. We show that the sets of these formal bivariate Laurent series form commutative semirings under the operations of addition and multiplication of formal Laurent series. This result is used to establish the unimodality of sequences involving Gauss polynomials and certain refined color partitions. In particular, we solve an open problem posed by Andrews on the unimodality of generalized Gauss polynomials and establish an unimodal result for a statistic of plane partitions. We also establish many unimodal results for rank statistics in partition theory, including the rank statistics of concave and convex compositions studied by Andrews, as well as certain unimodal sequences studied by Kim-Lim-Lovejoy. Additionally, we establish the unimodality of the Betti numbers and Gromov-Witten invariants of certain Hilbert schemes of points.
Unimodality of the Rank on Strongly Unimodal Sequences
Let $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ be a strongly unimodal positive integer sequence with peak position $k$. The rank of such sequence is defined to be $\ell-2k+1$. Let $u(m,n)$ denote the number of sequences $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ with rank $m$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{\ell} a_i=n$. Bringmann, Jennings-Shaffer, Mahlburg and Rhoades conjectured that $\{u(m,n)\}_m$ is strongly log-concave for any fixed $n$. Motivated by this conjecture, in this paper we prove the strongly unimodality of $\{u(m,n)\}_m$, that is $u(m,n)>u(m+1,n)$ for $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge \max\{6,{m+2\choose 2}\}$. This result gives supportive evidence for the above conjecture. Moreover, we find a combinatorial interpretation of $u(m,n)$, which leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of ${\rm ospt}(n)$. Furthermore, using this new combinatorial interpretation, a lower bound and an asymptotic formula on ${\rm ospt}(n)$ will be presented.
Over-Mahonian numbers: Basic properties and unimodality
In this paper, we introduce the concept of the over-Mahonian number, which counts the overlined permutations of length $n$ with $k$ inversions, allowing the first elements associated with the inversions to be independently overlined or not. We explore its properties and combinatorial interpretations through lattice paths, overpartitions, and tilings, and provide a combinatorial proof demonstrating that these numbers form a log-concave and unimodal sequence.
A proof of the only mode of a unimodal sequence
In study the generalized Jacobsthal and Jaco-Lucas polynomials, Sun introduced the interesting numerical triangle Jaco-Lucas sequence $\{JL_{n,k}\}_{n\geq k\geq0}$. In this paper, we proved this sequence is log-concave with the only mode by computer algebra.

We conjecture unimodality for some sequences of generalized Kronecker coefficients and prove it for partitions with at most two columns. The proof is based on a hard Lefschetz property for corresponding highest weight spaces. We also study more general Lefschetz properties, show implications to a higher-dimensional analogue of the Alon--Tarsi conjecture on Latin squares and give related positivity results.
Multimodal sequences and their generating functions
We define integer multimodal sequences, which are generalizations of unimodal sequences having multiple local peaks of equal size. The generating functions for multimodal sequences represent novel types of $q$-series that combine generating functions for both integer partitions and integer compositions. We prove a bijection between multimodal sequences of equal size (sum), and show that multimodal generating functions become finite series at roots of unity like the ``strange'' function of Kontsevich, quantum modular forms, and other examples of this phenomenon in the $q$-series literature.
Odd unimodal sequeneces
In this paper we study odd unimodal and odd strongly unimodal sequences. We use $q$-series methods to find several fundamental generating functions. Employing the Euler--Maclaurin summation formula we obtain the asymptotic main term for both types of sequences. We also find families of congruences modulo $4$ for the number of odd strongly unimodal sequences.
Log-concavity for unimodal sequences
In this paper, we prove that the number of unimodal sequences of size $n$ is log-concave. These are coefficients of a mixed false modular form and have a Rademacher-type exact formula due to recent work of the second author and Nazaroglu on false theta functions. Log-concavity and higher Turán inequalities have been well-studied for (restricted) partitions and coefficients of weakly holomorphic modular forms, and analytic proofs generally require precise asymptotic series with error term. In this paper, we proceed from the exact formula for unimodal sequences to carry out this calculation. We expect our method applies to other exact formulas for coefficients of mixed mock/false modular objects.
Seaweed algebras and the unimodal spectrum property
If $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Frobenius Lie algebra, then the spectrum of $\mathfrak{g}$ is an algebraic invariant equal to the multiset of eigenvalues corresponding to a particular operator acting on $\mathfrak{g}$. In the case of Frobenius seaweed subalgebras of $A_{n-1}=\mathfrak{sl}(n)$, or type-A seaweeds for short, it has been shown that the spectrum can be computed combinatorially using an attendant graph. With the aid of such graphs, it was further shown that the spectrum of a type-A seaweed consists of an unbroken sequence of integers centered at $\frac{1}{2}$. It has been conjectured that if the eigenvalues are arranged in increasing order, then the sequence of multiplicities forms a unimodal sequence about $\frac{1}{2}$. Here, we establish this conjecture for certain families of Frobenius type-A seaweeds by finding explicit formulas for their spectra; in fact, for some families we are able to show that the corresponding sequences of multiplicities form log-concave sequences. All arguments are combinatorial.

We show that the number $A(n,m)$ of partitions with $m$ even parts and largest hook length $n$ is strongly unimodal with mode [(n-1)/4] for $n\ge 6$. We establish this result by induction, using a $5$-term recurrence due to Lin, Xiong and Yan, and two $4$-term recurrences obtained by Zeilberger's algorithm. The sequence $A(n,m)$ is not log-concave. Using Möbius transformation and the method of interlacing zeros, we obtain that every zero of every generating function $\sum_m A(n,m)z^m$ lies on the left half part of the circle |z-1|=2. Moreover, as a direct application of Wang and Zhang's characterization of root geometry of polynomial sequences that satisfy a recurrence of type $(1,1)$, we see that all these zeros are densely distributed on the half circle.

Using equidistribution criteria, we establish divisibility by cyclotomic polynomials of several partition polynomials of interest, including $spt$-crank, overpartition pairs, and $t$-core partitions. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of various Ramanujan-type congruences for associated partition functions. Moreover, using results of Erdös and Turán, we establish the equidistribution of roots of partition polynomials on the unit circle including those for the rank, crank, $spt$, and unimodal sequences. Our results complement earlier work on this topic by Stanley, Boyer-Goh, and others. We explain how our methods may be used to establish similar results for other partition polynomials of interest, and offer many related open questions and examples.

We apply the new framework for modularity of false theta functions developed by the second author and Nazaroglu to study the asymptotic behavior of Taylor coefficients of false Jacobi forms. The examples we study generate moments of the rank for unimodal sequences. For two types of unimodal sequences, we prove asymptotic series for the rank moments.

We study compositions whose parts are colored by subsequences of the Fibonacci numbers. We give explicit bijections between Fibonacci colored compositions and several combinatorial objects, including certain restricted ternary and quaternary words, spanning trees in the ladder graph, unimodal sequences covering an initial interval, and ordered-consecutive partition sequences. Our approach relies on the basic idea of representing the colored compositions as tilings of an $n$-board whose tiles are connected, and sometimes decorated, according to a suitable combinatorial interpretation of the given coloring sequence.

Over a decade ago De Loera, Haws and Köppe conjectured that Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes have only positive coefficients and that the coefficients of the corresponding $h^*$-polynomials form a unimodal sequence. The first of these intensively studied conjectures has recently been disproved by the first author who gave counterexamples in all ranks greater or equal to three. In this article we complete the picture by showing that Ehrhart polynomials of matroids of lower rank have indeed only positive coefficients. Moreover, we show that they are coefficient-wise bounded by the Ehrhart polynomials of minimal and uniform matroids. We furthermore address the second conjecture by proving that $h^*$-polynomials of matroid polytopes of sparse paving matroids of rank two are real-rooted and therefore have log-concave and unimodal coefficients. In particular, this shows that the $h^*$-polynomial of the second hypersimplex is real-rooted thereby strengthening a result of De Loera, Haws and Köppe.
