Statistics for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.

Almost Unimodal and Real-Rooted Graph Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that the coefficients of the matching polynomial are unimodal. Unimodality of the coefficients (or their absolute values) of other graph polynomials have been studied as well. One way to prove unimodality is to prove real-rootedness.` Recently I. Beaton and J. Brown (2020) proved the for almost all graphs the coefficients of the domination polynomial form a unimodal sequence, and C. Barton, J. Brown and D. Pike (2020) proved that the forest polynomial (aka acyclic polynomial) is real-rooted iff $G$ is a forest. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a graph property, and let $a_i(G)$ be the number of induced subgraphs of order $i$ of a graph $G$ which are in $\mathcal{A}$. Inspired by their results we prove: {\bf Theorem:} If $\mathcal{A}$ is the complement of a hereditary property, then for almost all graphs in $G(n,p)$ the sequence $a_i(G)$ is unimodal. {\bf Theorem:} If $\mathcal{A}$ is a hereditary property which contains a graph which is not a clique or the complement of a clique, then the graph polynomial $P_{\mathcal{A}}(G;x) = \sum_i a_i(G) x^i$ is real-rooted iff $G \in \mathcal{A}$.

A proof of the mod $4$ unimodal sequence conjectures and related mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Bryson, Ono, Pitman and Rhoades showed how the generating functions for certain strongly unimodal sequences are related to quantum modular and mock modular forms. They proved some parity results and conjectured some mod 4 congruences for the coefficients of these generating functions. In 2016 Kim, Lim and Lovejoy obtained similar results for odd-balanced unimodal sequences and made similar mod 4 conjectures. We prove all of these mod 4 conjectures and similar congruences for the Andrews spt-function and related mock theta functions. Our method of proof involves new Hecke-Rogers type identities for indefinite binary quadratic forms and the Hurwitz class number.
An analogue of $k$-marked Durfee symbols for strongly unimodal sequences
In a seminal 2007 paper, Andrews introduced a class of combinatorial objects that generalize partitions called $k$-marked Durfee symbols. Multivariate rank generating functions for these objects have been shown by many to have interesting modularity properties at certain vectors of roots of unity. Motivated by recent studies of rank generating functions for strongly unimodal sequences, we apply methods of Andrews to define an analogous class of combinatorial objects called $k$-marked strongly unimodal symbols that generalize strongly unimodal sequences. We establish a multivariate rank generating function for these objects, which we study combinatorially. We conclude by discussing potential quantum modularity properties for this rank generating function at certain vectors of roots of unity.

Eulerian series, zeta functions and the arithmetic of partitions
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical number theory and analysis arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. Among our applications, we prove explicit formulas for the coefficients of the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov, a partition-theoretic operator from statistical physics related to quasi-modular forms; we prove partition formulas for arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the integers, giving $q$-series formulas to evaluate the Riemann zeta function; we study $q$-hypergeometric series related to quantum modular forms and the "strange" function of Kontsevich; and we show how Ramanujan's odd-order mock theta functions (and, more generally, the universal mock theta function $g_3$ of Gordon-McIntosh) arise from the reciprocal of the Jacobi triple product via the $q$-bracket operator, connecting also to unimodal sequences in combinatorics and quantum modular-like phenomena.

Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials. We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting. The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce. In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.

Limit Shapes for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove asymptotic 0-1 Laws satisfied by diagrams of unimodal sequences of positive integers. These diagrams consist of columns of squares in the plane, and the upper boundary is called the shape. For various types, we show that, as the number of squares tends to infinity, $100\%$ of shapes are near a certain curve---that is, there is a single {\it limit shape}. Similar phenomena have been well-studied for integer partitions, so the present work is a natural extension. One notable corollary is a transferred limit shape for overpartitions.

Hecke insertion and maximal increasing and decreasing sequences in fillings of stack polyominoes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the number of 01-fillings of a given stack polyomino (a polyomino with justified rows whose lengths form a unimodal sequence) with at most one 1 per column which do not contain a fixed-size northeast chain and a fixed-size southeast chain, depends only on the set of row lengths of the polyomino. The proof is via a bijection between fillings of stack polyominoes which differ only in the position of one row and uses the Hecke insertion algorithm by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong and the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux of Thomas and Yong. Moreover, our bijection gives another proof of the result by Chen, Guo, and Pang that the crossing number and the nesting number have a symmetric joint distribution over linked partitions.
The Asymptotic Distribution of the Rank for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotic behavior of the rank statistic for unimodal sequences. We use analytic techniques involving asymptotic expansions in order to prove asymptotic formulas for the moments of the rank. Furthermore, when appropriately normalized, the values of the unimodal rank asymptotically follow a logistic distribution. We also prove similar results for Durfee unimodal sequences and semi-strict unimodal sequences, with the only major difference being that the (normalized) rank for semistrict unimodal sequences has a distributional limit of a point mass probability distribution.

Algebraic Relations Between Partition Functions and the $j$-Function
Published in Res. number theory 6, 2 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We obtain identities and relationships between the modular $j$-function, the generating functions for the classical partition function and the Andrews $spt$-function, and two functions related to unimodal sequences and a new partition statistic we call the "signed triangular weight" of a partition. These results follow from the closed formula we obtain for the Hecke action on a distinguished harmonic Maass form $\mathscr{M}(τ)$ defined by Bringmann in her work on the Andrews $spt$-function. This formula involves a sequence of polynomials in $j(τ)$, through which we ultimately arrive at expressions for the coefficients of the $j$-function purely in terms of these combinatorial quantities.

A Framework for Modular Properties of False Theta Functions
False theta functions closely resemble ordinary theta functions, however they do not have the modular transformation properties that theta functions have. In this paper, we find modular completions for false theta functions, which among other things gives an efficient way to compute their obstruction to modularity. This has potential applications for a variety of contexts where false and partial theta series appear. To exemplify the utility of this derivation, we discuss the details of its use on two cases. First, we derive a convergent Rademacher-type exact formula for the number of unimodal sequences via the Circle Method and extend earlier work on their asymptotic properties. Secondly, we show how quantum modular properties of the limits of false theta functions can be rederived directly from the modular completion of false theta functions proposed in this paper.

Unimodal Sequence Generating Functions Arising from Partition Ranks
In this paper we study generating functions resembling the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We give combinatorial interpretations, identities in terms of mock modular forms, asymptotics, and a parity result. Our functions imitate a relation between the rank of strongly unimodal sequences and the rank of integer partitions.

Multivariate Stable Eulerian Polynomials on Segmented Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Nunge studied Eulerian polynomials on segmented permutations, namely \emph{generalized Eulerian polynomials}, and further asked whether their coefficients form unimodal sequences. In this paper, we prove the stability of the generalized Eulerian polynomials and hence confirm Nunge's conjecture. Our proof is based on Brändén's stable multivariate Eulerian polynomials. By acting on Brändén's polynomials with a stability-preserving linear operator, we get a multivariate refinement of the generalized Eulerian polynomials. To prove Nunge's conjecture, we also develop a general approach to obtain generalized Sturm sequences from bivariate stable polynomials.
Peak positions of strongly unimodal sequences

We study combinatorial and asymptotic properties of the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We find a generating function for the rank enumeration function, and give a new combinatorial interpretation of the ospt-function introduced by Andrews, Chan, and Kim. We conjecture that the enumeration function for the number of unimodal sequences of a fixed size and varying rank is log-concave, and prove an asymptotic result in support of this conjecture. Finally, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the rank for strongly unimodal sequences, and prove that its values (when appropriately renormalized) are normally distributed with mean zero in the asymptotic limit.

Building on a bijection of Vandervelde, we enumerate certain unimodal sequences whose alternating sum equals zero. This enables us to refine the enumeration of strict partitions with respect to the number of parts and the BG-rank.

The colored Jones polynomial and Kontsevich-Zagier series for double twist knots
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications 30 (2021), no. 5, Paper No. 2150031, 28 pp • View PublicationBIB
Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of the double twist knots $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$ where $m$ and $p$ are positive integers. In the $(-m,-p)$ case, this leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. Comparing with the cyclotomic expansion of the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ gives a generalization of a duality at roots of unity between the Kontsevich-Zagier function and the generating function for strongly unimodal sequences.

Jacobi's triple product, mock theta functions, unimodal sequences and the $q$-bracket
Published • View PublicationBIB
In Ramanujan's final letter to Hardy, he listed examples of a strange new class of infinite series he called "mock theta functions". It turns out all of these examples are essentially specializations of a so-called universal mock theta function $g_3(z,q)$ of Gordon-McIntosh. Here we show that $g_3$ arises naturally from the reciprocal of the classical Jacobi triple product -- and is intimately tied to rank generating functions for unimodal sequences, which are connected to mock modular and quantum modular forms -- under the action of an operator related to statistical physics and partition theory, the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov. Secondly, we find $g_3(z,q)$ to extend in $q$ to the entire complex plane minus the unit circle, and give a finite formula for this universal mock theta function at roots of unity, that is simple by comparison to other such formulas in the literature; we also indicate similar formulas for other $q$-hypergeometric series. Finally, we look at interesting "quantum" behaviors of mock theta functions inside, outside, and on the unit circle.

Binary words avoiding xx^Rx and strongly unimodal sequences
In previous work, Currie and Rampersad showed that the growth of the number of binary words avoiding the pattern xxx^R was intermediate between polynomial and exponential. We now show that the same holds for the growth of the number of binary words avoiding the pattern xx^Rx. Curiously, the analysis for xx^Rx is much simpler than that for xxx^R. We derive our results by giving a bijection between the set of binary words avoiding xx^Rx and a class of sequences closely related to the class of "strongly unimodal sequences."

On face numbers of neighborly cubical polytopes
Neighborly cubical polytopes are known as the cubical analogues of the cyclic polytopes. Using the short cubical $h$-vectors of cubical polytopes (introduced by Adin), we derive an explicit formula for the face numbers of the neighborly cubical polytopes. These face numbers form a unimodal sequence.

Asymptotic formulas for stacks and unimodal sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study enumeration functions for unimodal sequences of positive integers, where the size of a sequence is the sum of its terms. We survey known results for a number of natural variants of unimodal sequences, including Auluck's generalized Ferrer diagrams, Wright's stacks, and Andrews' convex compositions. These results describe combinatorial properties, generating functions, and asymptotic formulas for the enumeration functions. We also prove several new asymptotic results that fill in the notable missing cases from the literature, including an open problem in statistical mechanics due to Temperley. Furthermore, we explain the combinatorial and asymptotic relationship between partitions, Andrews' Frobenius symbols, and stacks with summits.
