Matroid flat counts can have many peaks
We disprove Rota's conjecture that the counts of flats in a matroid according to rank form a unimodal sequence. Furthermore, we show that this sequence can have arbitrarily many peaks. The construction starts by finding a generalized theta graph for which log-concavity fails severely. By taking direct sums, we break log-concavity in many places. We then use Whittle's $q$-lift construction to produce a matroid whose flat counts have many peaks.

Matroid flat counts are not unimodal
We give counterexamples to Rota's 1970 conjecture that the sequence counting flats of varying rank in a matroid is unimodal. More specifically, inspired by Larson's recent disproof of the stronger log-concavity conjecture of Mason, we explain a mechanism which turns failures of log-concavity for flats into failures of unimodality under suitable conditions.
Realizations of homology classes and projection areas
The relationship between convex geometry and algebraic geometry has deep historical roots, tracing back to classical works in enumerative geometry. In this paper, we continue this theme by studying two interconnected problems regarding projections of geometric objects in four-dimensional spaces: (1) Let $A$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^4$, and let $(p_{12}, p_{13}, p_{14}, p_{23}, p_{24}, p_{34})$ be the areas of the six coordinate projections of $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Which tuples of six nonnegative real numbers can arise in this way? (2) Let $S$ be an irreducible surface in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^4$, and let $(p_{12}, p_{13}, p_{14}, p_{23}, p_{24}, p_{34})$ be the degrees of the six coordinate projections from $S$ to $(\mathbb{P}^1)^2$. Which tuples of six nonnegative integers can arise in this way? We show that these questions are governed by the Plücker relations for the Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ over the triangular hyperfield $\mathbb{T}_2$. We extend our analysis by determining the homology classes in $(\mathbb{P}^m)^n$ proportional to the fundamental classes of irreducible algebraic surfaces, resolving the algebraic Steenrod problem in this setting. Our results lead to several conjectures on realizable homology classes in smooth projective varieties and on the projection volumes of convex bodies.

An identity in distribution between full-space and half-space log-gamma polymers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an identity in distribution between two kinds of partition functions for the log-gamma directed polymer model: (1) the point-to-point partition function in a quadrant, (2) the point-to-line partition function in an octant. As an application, we prove that the point-to-line free energy of the log-gamma polymer in an octant obeys a phase transition depending on the strength of the noise along the boundary. This transition of (de)pinning by randomness was first predicted in physics by Kardar in 1985 and proved rigorously for zero temperature models by Baik and Rains in 2001. While it is expected to arise universally for models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, this is the first positive temperature model for which this transition can be rigorously established.
