Negative-index $u$-deformed homogeneous functions and Ramanujan partial theta functions
We introduce and study a class of \(u\)-deformed homogeneous functions of complex order \(\rr_α(x,y;u\,|\,q)\), obtained by extending \(u\)-deformed homogeneous polynomials beyond the nonnegative integer regime. We establish their basic analytic and algebraic properties, including convergence criteria, recurrence relations, \(q\)-derivative formulas, and an operator-theoretic realization through a deformed \(q\)-exponential operator. A central feature of the theory appears in the negative-index sector: for every nonnegative integer \(n\), the functions \(\rr_{\minus n\minus1}(x,y;u\,|\,q)\) admit finite triangular decompositions in terms of shifted Ramanujan partial theta functions. We also prove the inverse triangular transformation, showing that the corresponding partial theta functions can be recovered from the negative-index \(u\)-deformed homogeneous functions. We also derive pantograph-type \(q\)-difference equations for these functions. Finally, we derive specialized forms of the negative-index theory in Cauchy and Stieltjes--Wigert-type regimes, including a boundary geometric case and genuine partial-theta regimes.

Some new results on Andrews' and Warnaar's q-identities
In this paper, by the technique of inverse relations and comparing coefficients, we establish some generalized forms of Andrews' q-series identity and two new Bailey pairs and q-identities closely related to Andrews-Warnaar's sum identity for partial theta functions.
False and partial Eisenstein series related to unimodal sequences
Motivated by the fact that the classical Jacobi theta function $\vartheta$ is the exponential generating function of the Eisenstein series, we study the exponential Taylor coefficients (in the elliptic variable) of a related natural partial theta function, as well as a false theta function related to the Dedekind eta function. We prove that the space spanned by these objects is closed under differentiation, analogous to the space of quasimodular forms, and that it contains the quasimodular forms themselves. We further provide their Fourier expansions, establish quasimodular completions, and derive a recursive formula for the Taylor coefficients of the logarithm of the unimodal rank generating function, expressed as partition traces of the false and partial objects.

Unimodal sequences and mixed false theta functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics 473 (2025), Paper No. 110293, 37 pp • View PublicationBIB
We consider two-parameter generalizations of Hecke-Appell type expansions for the generating functions of unimodal and special unimodal sequences. We then determine their explicit representations which involve mixed false theta functions. These results complement recent striking work of Mortenson and Zwegers on the mixed mock modularity of the generalized $U$-function due to Hikami and Lovejoy. As an application, we demonstrate how to recover classical partial theta function identities which appear in Ramanujan's lost notebook and in work of Warnaar.

Hankel determinants of backward shifts of the coefficients of a partial theta function
We study some polynomials which are related to Hankel determinants of backward shifts of the coefficients of a partial theta function. In this version an appendix is added which gives a simple formula for the coefficients of the reciprocal of the partial theta function.

An extension of the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, by applying a range of classic summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, we obtain a three-term identity for partial theta functions. It extends the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity, and also unifies several results on partial theta functions due to Ramanujan, Lovejoy and Kim. We also establish a two-term version of the extension, which can be used to derive identities for partial and false theta functions. Finally, we present a relation between the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials and the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity.

A general q-expansion formula based on matrix inversions and its applications
In this paper, by use of matrix inversions, we establish a general $q$-expansion formula of arbitrary formal power series $F(z)$ with respect to the base $$\left\{z^n\frac{(az:q)_n}{(bz:q)_n}\bigg|n=0,1,2\cdots\right\}.$$ Some concrete expansion formulas and their applications to $q$-series identities are presented, including Carlitz's $q$-expansion formula, a new partial theta function identity and a coefficient identity of Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation formula as special cases.

On the growth of Artin--Tits monoids and the partial theta function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new procedure to determine the growth function of a homogeneous Garside monoid, with respect to the finite generating set formed by the atoms. In particular, we present a formula for the growth function of each Artin--Tits monoid of spherical type (hence of each braid monoid) with respect to the standard generators, as the inverse of the determinant of a very simple matrix. Using this approach, we show that the exponential growth rates of the Artin--Tits monoids of type $A_n$ (positive braid monoids) tend to $3.233636\ldots$ as $n$ tends to infinity. This number is well-known, as it is the growth rate of the coefficients of the only solution $x_0(y)=-(1+y+2y^2+4y^3+9y^4+\cdots)$ to the classical partial theta function. We also describe the sequence $1,1,2,4,9,\ldots$ formed by the coefficients of $-x_0(y)$, by showing that its $k$th term (the coefficient of $y^k$) is equal to the number of braids of length $k$, in the positive braid monoid $A_{\infty}$ on an infinite number of strands, whose maximal lexicographic representative starts with the first generator $a_1$. This is an unexpected connection between the partial theta function and the theory of braids.

Partial theta function identities from Wang and Ma's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Wang and Ma propose a conjecture associated with the possible generalization of Andrews-Warnaar identities. It is confirmed in this paper. As the applications of this conjecture, we prove that a family of series can be expressed by the partial theta functions and construct some new partial theta function identities.

On Andrews--Warnaar's identities of partial theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we set up a bivariate representation of partial theta functions which not only unifies some famous identities for partial theta functions due to Andrews and Warnaar, et al. but also unveils a new characteristic of such identities. As further applications, we establish a general form of Warnaar's identity and a general $q$--series transformation associated with Bailey pairs via the use of the power series expansion of partial theta functions.

On the asymptotic behavior of unimodal rank generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, J. Lovejoy and the second author conjectured that ranks for four types of unimodal like sequences satisfy certain inequalities. In this paper, we prove these conjectures asymptotically. For this, we extend Wright's Circle Method and analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain general partial theta functions.

The combinatorics of the leading root of the partial theta function
Recently Alan Sokal studied the leading root $x_0(q)$ of the partial theta function $Θ_0(x,q)=\sum\limits_{n=0}^\infty x^nq^{\binom n2}$, considered as a formal power series. He proved that all the coefficients of $$-x_0(q)=1+q+2q^2+4q^3+9q^4+...$$ are positive integers. I give here an explicit combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients. More precisely, I show that $-x_0(q)$ enumerates rooted trees that are enriched by certain polyominoes, weighted according to their total area.

A Unified Partial and Mock Theta Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unary theta functions have played a significant role in the theory of holomorphic modular forms and modular $L$-functions. A partial theta functions is defined analogously, but the sum is over part of the integer lattice. Such sums fail to have modular properties. We give a construction which unifies these partial theta functions with the mock theta function introduced by Ramanujan. The modularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions has only recently been understood by the work of Sander Zwegers.
Partial theta functions and mock modular forms as q-hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ramanujan studied the analytic properties of many $q$-hypergeometric series. Of those, mock theta functions have been particularly intriguing, and by work of Zwegers, we now know how these curious $q$-series fit into the theory of automorphic forms. The analytic theory of partial theta functions however, which have $q$-expansions resembling modular theta functions, is not well understood. Here we consider families of $q$-hypergeometric series which converge in two disjoint domains. In one domain, we show that these series are often equal to one another, and define mock theta functions, including the classical mock theta functions of Ramanujan, as well as certain combinatorial generating functions, as special cases. In the other domain, we prove that these series are typically not equal to one another, but instead are related by partial theta functions.

The leading root of the partial theta function
Published in Adv. Math. 229, 2603-2621 (2012) • View PublicationBIB
I study the leading root x_0(y) of the partial theta function Θ_0(x,y) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty x^n y^{n(n-1)/2}, considered as a formal power series. I prove that all the coefficients of -x_0(y) are strictly positive. Indeed, I prove the stronger results that all the coefficients of -1/x_0(y) after the constant term 1 are strictly negative, and all the coefficients of 1/x_0(y)^2 after the constant term 1 are strictly negative except for the vanishing coefficient of y^3.

Combinatorial Proofs of an Identity from Ramanujan's Lost Notebook and its Variations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine an identity originally stated in Ramanujan's ``lost notebook'' and first proven algebraically by Andrews and combinatorially by Kim. We give two independent combinatorial proofs and interpretations of this identity, which also extends an identity recently proven by Pak and Waarnar related to the product of partial theta functions: First, we give a direct combinatorial proof, using the involution principle, of a special case of the identity, and extend this into a direct combinatorial proof of the full identity as written. Second, we show that the identity can be rewritten, using minor algebraic manipulation, into an identity that can be proven with a direct bijection. We provide such a bijection using a generalization of a standard bijection from partition theory.

On the difference of partial theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Sums of the form add((-1)^n q^(n(n-1)/2) x^n, n>=0) are called partial theta functions. In his lost notebook, Ramanujan recorded many identities for those functions. In 2003, Warnaar found an elegant formula for a sum of two partial theta functions. Subsequently, Andrews and Warnaar established a similar result for the product of two partial theta functions. In this note, I discuss the relation between the Andrews-Warnaar identity and the (1986) product formula due to Gasper and Rahman. I employ nonterminating extension of Sears-Carlitz transformation for 3φ_2 to provide a new elegant proof for a companion identity for the difference of two partial theta series. This difference formula first appeared in the work of Schilling-Warnaar (2002). Finally, I show that Schilling-Warnnar (2002) and Warnaar (2003) formulas are, in fact, equivalent.

Partial theta functions. I. Beyond the lost notebook
Published in Proc. London Math. Soc. 87 (2003), 363-395 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown how many of the partial theta function identities in Ramanujan's lost notebook can be generalized to infinite families of such identities. Key in our construction is the Bailey lemma and a new generalization of the Jacobi triple product identity. By computing residues around the poles of our identities we find a surprising connection between partial theta functions identities and Garret-Ismail-Stanton-type extensions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
