Typical intersecting families are trivial
We study the counting problem for non-uniform intersecting families in extremal set theory. Let $J(n,k)$ denote the number of intersecting families $\mathcal{F}\subset 2^{[n]}$ such that every member of $\mathcal{F}$ has size at most $k$. Extending recent counting results for uniform intersecting families, we prove that for $n\ge 2k+2+2\sqrt{k \log k}$ and $k \rightarrow +\infty$, \[ J(n,k) =(n+o(1)) 2^{\sum_{i=1}^{k} \binom{n-1}{i-1}}. \] This result reveals that typical non-uniform intersecting families of bounded size are trivial, i.e., almost all such families share a common fixed element.

Generalizations of Euler's Theorem to $k$-regular partitions
Let $A_k(n)$ denote the set of $k$-distinct partitions of $n$, and let $B_k(n)$ be the set of $k$-regular partitions of $n$. Glaisher showed that $\# A_k(n) = \# B_k(n)$. For $k=2$, this equality yields the celebrated Euler's partition theorem. In this paper, we present a new partition set $E_k(n)$, which is equinumerous to $B_k(n)$.

Proof of Singh and Barman's conjecture on hook length biases
Let $b_{t,i}(n)$ denote the total number of $i$-hooks in $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Singh and Barman conjectured that $b_{t+1,2}(n) \geq b_{t,2}(n)$ holds for all $t\ge 3$ and $n\ge 0$. This conjecture was known to hold for $t=3$ due to work of Barman Mahanta and Singh. In this paper, we prove this conjecture.

New combinatorial proof of Gaussian polynomial and the monotonicity of the Garvan's $k$-rank
Gaussian polynomial, which is also known as $q$-binomial coefficient, is one of the fundamental concepts in the theory of partitions. Zeilberger provided a combinatorial proof of Gaussian polynomial, which is called Algorithm Z by Andrews and Bressoud. In this paper, we provide a new bijection on Gaussian polynomial, which leads to a refinement of Algorithm Z. Moreover, using this bijection, we provide an alternative proof of generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identity, which was first proved by Bressoud and Zeilberger. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial proof of the monotonicity property of Garvan's $k$-rank, which is a generalization of Dyson's rank and Andrews-Garvan's crank.

The inequality on the number of $1$-hooks, $2$-hooks and $3$-hooks in $t$-regular partitions
Let $b_{n,k}$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Singh and Barman raised the question of finding the relation between $b_{t,2}(n)$ and $b_{t,1}(n)$. Kim showed that there exists $N$ such that $b_{t,2}(n)\ge b_{t,1}(n)$ and $b_{t,2}(n) \geq b_{t,3}(n)$ for $n>N$. In this paper, we find an explicit bound of $N=O(t^5)$ for $b_{t,2}(n)\geq b_{t,1}(n)$ and show that $b_{t,2}(n) \geq b_{t,3}(n)$ for all $n\ge 4$.

Bilateral truncated quintuple product
In this paper, we present the bilateral truncated identity of the quintuple product identity, which is a generalization of the truncated quintuple product identities given by Chan, Ho and Mao [J. Number Theory 169 (2016) 420--438]. Additionally, we provide the bilateral truncated forms of two $q$-series identities, which are well-known consequences of the quintuple product identity.

On the hook length biases of the $2$- and $3$-regular partitions
Let $b_{t,i}(n)$ denote the total number of the $i$ hooks in the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Singh and Barman (J. Number Theory { 264} (2024), 41--58) raised two conjectures on $b_{t,i}(n)$. The first conjecture is on the positivity of $b_{3,2}(n)-b_{3,1}(n)$ for $n\ge 28$. The second conjecture states that when $k\ge 3$, $b_{2,k}(n)\ge b_{2,k+1}(n)$ for all $n$ except for $n= k+1$. In this paper, we confirm the first conjecture. {Moreover, we show that for any odd $k\ge 3$, the second conjecture fails for infinitely many $n$.} {Furthermore, we verify that the second conjecture holds for $k=4$ and $6$.} We also propose a conjecture on the even case $k$, which is a modification of Singh and Barman's second conjecture.

Unimodality of the Rank on Strongly Unimodal Sequences
Let $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ be a strongly unimodal positive integer sequence with peak position $k$. The rank of such sequence is defined to be $\ell-2k+1$. Let $u(m,n)$ denote the number of sequences $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ with rank $m$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{\ell} a_i=n$. Bringmann, Jennings-Shaffer, Mahlburg and Rhoades conjectured that $\{u(m,n)\}_m$ is strongly log-concave for any fixed $n$. Motivated by this conjecture, in this paper we prove the strongly unimodality of $\{u(m,n)\}_m$, that is $u(m,n)>u(m+1,n)$ for $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge \max\{6,{m+2\choose 2}\}$. This result gives supportive evidence for the above conjecture. Moreover, we find a combinatorial interpretation of $u(m,n)$, which leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of ${\rm ospt}(n)$. Furthermore, using this new combinatorial interpretation, a lower bound and an asymptotic formula on ${\rm ospt}(n)$ will be presented.

Gap between the largest and smallest parts of partitions and Berkovich and Uncu's conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove three main conjectures of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263--284) on the inequalities between the numbers of partitions of $n$ with bounded gap between largest and smallest parts for sufficiently large $n$. Actually our theorems are stronger than their original conjectures. The analytic version of our results shows that the coefficients of some partition $q$-series are eventually positive.
A rank of partitions with overline designated summands
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function $PD(n)$ as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands. In a recent work, Lin studied a partition function $PD_{t}(n)$ which counts the number of tagged parts over all the partitions of $n$ with designated summands. He proved that $PD_{t}(3n+2)$ is divisible by $3$. In this paper, we first introduce a structure named partitions with overline designated summands, which is counted by $PD_t(n)$. We then define a generalized rank of partitions with overline designated summands and give a combinatorial interpretation of the congruence for $PD_t(3n+2)$.

The Unimodality of the Crank on Overpartitions
Let $N(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with rank $m$, and let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with crank $m$. Chan and Mao proved that for any nonnegative integers $m$ and $n$, $N(m,n)\geq N(m+2,n)$ and for any nonnegative integers $m$ and $n$ such that $n\geq12$, $n\neq m+2$, $N(m,n)\geq N(m,n-1)$. Recently, Ji and Zang showed that for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$, $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ and for $n\geq 14$ and $0\leq m\leq n-2$, $M(m,n)\geq M(m,n-1)$. In this paper, we analogue the result of Ji and Zang to overpartitions. Note that Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn introduced two type of cranks on overpartitions, namely the first residue crank and the second residue crank. Consequently, for the first residue crank $\overline{M}(m,n)$, we show that $\overline{M}(m-1,n)\geq \overline{M}(m,n)$ for $m\geq 1$ and $n\geq 3$ and $\overline{M}(m,n)\geq \overline{M}(m,n+1)$ for $m\geq 0$ and $n\geq 1$. For the second residue crank $\overline{M2}(m,n)$, we show that $\overline{M2}(m-1,n)\geq \overline{M2}(m,n)$ for $m\geq 1$ and $n\geq 0$ and $\overline{M2}(m,n)\geq \overline{M2}(m,n+1)$ for $m\geq 0$ and $n\geq 1$. Moreover, let $M_k(m,n)$ denote the number of $k$-colored partitions of $n$ with $k$-crank $m$, which was defined by Fu and Tang. They conjectured that when $k\geq 2$, $M_k(m-1,n)\geq M_k(m,n)$ except for $k=2$ and $n=1$. With the aid of the inequality $\overline{M}(m-1,n)\geq \overline{M}(m,n)$ for $m\geq 1$ and $n\geq 3$, we confirm this conjecture.

Unimodality of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson cranks of partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the distribution of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank of a partition. Let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank $m$, we show that the sequence \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. It turns out that the unimodality of \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is related to the monotonicity properties of two partition \break functions $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$. Let $p_k(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with at most $k$ parts such that the largest part appears at least twice and let $pp_k(n)$ denote the number of pairs $(α,β)$ of partitions of $n$, where $α$ is a partition counted by $p_k(i)$ and $β$ is a partition counted by $p_{k+1}(n-i)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. We show that $p_k(n)\geq p_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq 14$ and $pp_k(n)\geq pp_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 2$. With the aid of the monotonicity properties on $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$, we show that $M(m,n)\geq M(m,n-1)$ for $n\geq 14$ and $ 0\leq m \leq n-2$ and $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$. By means of the symmetry $M(m,n)=M(-m,n)$, we find that $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$ implies that the sequence $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. We also give a proof of an upper bound for ospt(n) conjectured by Chan and Mao in light of the inequality $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $0\leq m\leq n-1$.

Monotonicity properties for ranks of overpartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rank of partitions play an important role in the combinatorial interpretations of several Ramanujan's famous congruence formulas. In 2005 and 2008, the $D$-rank and $M_2$-rank of an overpartition were introduced by Lovejoy, respectively. Let $\overline{N}(m,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$ with $D$-rank $m$ and $M_2$-rank $m$, respectively. In 2014, Chan and Mao proposed a conjecture on monotonicity properties of $\overline{N}(m,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)$. In this paper, we prove the Chan-Mao monotonicity conjecture. To be specific, we show that for any integer $m$ and nonnegative integer $n$, $\overline{N2}(m,n)\leq \overline{N2}(m,n+1)$; and for $(m,n)\neq (0,4)$ with $n\neq\, |m| +2$, we have $\overline{N}(m,n)\leq \overline{N}(m,n+1)$. Furthermore, when $m$ increases, we prove that $\overline{N}(m,n)\geq \overline{N}(m+2,n)$ and $\overline{N2}(m,n)\geq \overline{N2}(m+2,n)$ for any $m,n\geq 0$, which is an analogue of Chan and Mao's result for partitions.

On the polynomiality and asymptotics of moments of sizes for random $(n, dn\pm 1)$-core partitions with distinct parts
Published • View PublicationBIB
Amdeberhan's conjectures on the enumeration, the average size, and the largest size of $(n,n+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts have motivated many research on this topic. Recently, Straub and Nath-Sellers obtained formulas for the numbers of $(n, dn-1)$ and $(n, dn+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, respectively. Let $X_{s,t}$ be the size of a uniform random $(s,t)$-core partition with distinct parts when $s$ and $t$ are coprime to each other. Some explicit formulas for the $k$-th moments $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{2n+1,2n+3}^k]$ were given by Zaleski and Zeilberger when $k$ is small. Zaleski also studied the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$ and conjectured some polynomiality properties concerning them in arXiv:1702.05634. Motivated by the above works, we derive several polynomiality results and asymptotic formulas for the $k$-th moments of $X_{n,dn+1}$ and $X_{n,dn-1}$ in this paper, by studying the beta sets of core partitions. In particular, we show that these $k$-th moments are asymptotically some polynomials of n with degrees at most $2k$, when $d$ is given and $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, when $d=1$, we derive that the $k$-th moment $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ of $X_{n,n+1}$ is asymptotically equal to $\left(n^2/10\right)^k$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The explicit formulas for the expectations $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn+1}]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn-1}]$ are also given. The $(n,dn-1)$-core case in our results proves several conjectures of Zaleski on the polynomiality of the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$.
Nearly Equal Distributions of the Rank and the Crank of Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $N(\leq m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with rank not greater than $m$, and let $M(\leq m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with crank not greater than $m$. Bringmann and Mahlburg observed that $N(\leq m,n)\leq M(\leq m,n)\leq N(\leq m+1,n)$ for $m<0$ and $1\leq n\leq 100$. They also pointed out that these inequalities can be restated as the existence of a re-ordering $τ_n$ on the set of partitions of $n$ such that $|\text{crank}(λ)|-|\text{rank}(τ_n(λ))|=0$ or $1$ for all partitions $λ$ of $n$, that is, the rank and the crank are nearly equal distributions over partitions of $n$. In the study of the spt-function, Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades proposed a conjecture on the unimodality of the spt-crank, and they showed that this conjecture is equivalent to the inequality $N(\leq m,n)\leq M(\leq m,n)$ for $m<0$ and $n\geq 1$. We proved this conjecture by combiantorial arguments. In this paper, we prove the inequality $N(\leq m,n)\leq M(\leq m,n)$ for $m<0$ and $n\geq 1$. Furthermore, we define a re-ordering $τ_n$ of the partitions $λ$ of $n$ and show that this re-ordering $τ_n$ leads to the nearly equal distribution of the rank and the crank. Using the re-ordering $τ_n$, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of the function ospt$(n)$ defined by Andrews, Chan and Kim, which immediately leads to an upper bound for $ospt(n)$ due to Chan and Mao.
The spt-Crank for Ordinary Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The spt-function $spt(n)$ was introduced by Andrews as the weighted counting of partitions of $n$ with respect to the number of occurrences of the smallest part. Andrews, Garvan and Liang defined the spt-crank of an $S$-partition which leads to combinatorial interpretations of the congruences of $spt(n)$ mod 5 and 7. Let $N_S(m,n)$ denote the net number of $S$-partitions of $n$ with spt-crank $m$. Andrews, Garvan and Liang showed that $N_S(m,n)$ is nonnegative for all integers $m$ and positive integers $n$, and they asked the question of finding a combinatorial interpretation of $N_S(m,n)$. In this paper, we introduce the structure of doubly marked partitions and define the spt-crank of a doubly marked partition. We show that $N_S(m,n)$ can be interpreted as the number of doubly marked partitions of $n$ with spt-crank $m$. Moreover, we establish a bijection between marked partitions of $n$ and doubly marked partitions of $n$. A marked partition is defined by Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades as a partition with exactly one of the smallest parts marked. They consider it a challenge to find a definition of the spt-crank of a marked partition so that the set of marked partitions of $5n+4$ and $7n+5$ can be divided into five and seven equinumerous classes. The definition of spt-crank for doubly marked partitions and the bijection between the marked partitions and doubly marked partitions leads to a solution to the problem of Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades.
Proof of the Andrews-Dyson-Rhoades Conjecture on the spt-Crank
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of the spt-crank of a vector partition, or an $S$-partition, was introduced by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. Let $N_S(m,n)$ denote the number of $S$-partitions of $n$ with spt-crank $m$. Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades conjectured that $\{N_S(m,n)\}_m$ is unimodal for any $n$, and they showed that this conjecture is equivalent to an inequality between the rank and the crank of ordinary partitions. They obtained an asymptotic formula for the difference between the rank and the crank of ordinary partitions, which implies $N_S(m,n)\geq N_S(m+1,n)$ for sufficiently large $n$ and fixed $m$. In this paper, we introduce a representation of an ordinary partition, called the $m$-Durfee rectangle symbol, which is a rectangular generalization of the Durfee symbol introduced by Andrews. We give a proof of the conjecture of Andrews, Dyson and Rhoades by considering two cases. For $m\geq 1$, we construct an injection from the set of ordinary partitions of $n$ such that $m$ appears in the rank-set to the set of ordinary partitions of $n$ with rank not less than $-m$. The case for $m=0$ requires five more injections. We also show that this conjecture implies an inequality between the positive rank and crank moments obtained by Andrews, Chan and Kim.
