Strong convergence: a short survey
A family of random matrices is said to converge strongly to a limiting family of operators if the operator norm of every noncommutative polynomial of the matrices converges to that of the limiting operators. Recent developments surrounding the strong convergence phenomenon have led to new progress on important problems in random graphs, geometry, operator algebras, and applied mathematics. We review classical and recent results in this area, and their applications to various areas of mathematics.

The strong convergence phenomenon
In a seminal 2005 paper, Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen discovered that the norm of any noncommutative polynomial of independent complex Gaussian random matrices converges to that of a limiting family of operators that arises from Voiculescu's free probability theory. In recent years, new methods have made it possible to establish such strong convergence properties in much more general situations, and to obtain even more powerful quantitative forms of the strong convergence phenomenon. These, in turn, have led to a number of spectacular applications to long-standing open problems on random graphs, hyperbolic surfaces, and operator algebras, and have provided flexible new tools that enable the study of random matrices in unexpected generality. This survey aims to provide an introduction to this circle of ideas.

The extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality
A classical result of Kahn and Saks states that given any partially ordered set with two distinguished elements, the number of linear extensions in which the ranks of the distinguished elements differ by $k$ is log-concave as a function of $k$. The log-concave sequences that can arise in this manner prove to exhibit a much richer structure, however, than is evident from log-concavity alone. The main result of this paper is a complete characterization of the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality: we obtain a detailed combinatorial understanding of where and what kind of geometric progressions can appear in these log-concave sequences. This settles a partial conjecture of Chan-Pak-Panova, while the analysis uncovers new extremals that were not previously conjectured. The proof relies on a much more general geometric mechanism -- a hard Lefschetz theorem for nef classes that was obtained in the setting of convex polytopes by Shenfeld and Van Handel -- which forms a model for the investigation of such structures in other combinatorial problems.

The Extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel Inequality for Convex Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, a far-reaching generalization of the classical isoperimetric inequality to arbitrary mixed volumes, lies at the heart of convex geometry. The characterization of its extremal bodies is a long-standing open problem that dates back to Alexandrov's original 1937 paper. The known extremals already form a very rich family, and even the fundamental conjectures on their general structure, due to Schneider, are incomplete. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes. In particular, we show that the extremals arise from the combination of three distinct mechanisms: translation, support, and dimensionality. The characterization of these mechanisms requires the development of a diverse range of techniques that shed new light on the geometry of mixed volumes of nonsmooth convex bodies. Our main result extends further beyond polytopes in a number of ways, including to the setting of quermassintegrals of arbitrary convex bodies. As an application of our main result, we settle a question of Stanley on the extremal behavior of certain log-concave sequences that arise in the combinatorics of partially ordered sets.
