The Universe Fan
The wavefunction of the universe, as studied in perturbative quantum field theory, is a rational function whose singularities and factorization properties encode a rich underlying combinatorial structure. We define and study a broad generalization of such wavefunctions that can be associated to any lattice. We obtain these wavefunctions as the Laplace transform of a polyhedral fan, the universe fan, whose cones are defined by positivity conditions reflecting a notion of causality in the lattice, and we describe its face lattice. In the matroid case, the universe fan projects to the nested set fan, and the wavefunctions we define recover the matroid amplitudes introduced by Lam as residues. Moreover, in the case relevant for physics, the positivity conditions give a novel way to study the wavefunction, and we show how it is related to the cosmological polytopes of Arkani-Hamed, Benincasa, Postnikov. Finally, we study refinements of the universe fan induced by piecewise linear (tropical) functions. The resulting subdivisions project to refinements of the nested set fan and correspond dually to blow-ups of matroid polytopes, generalizing the cosmohedron polytope.
Line Shellings of Geometric Lattices
Inspired by Bruggesser-Mani's line shellings of polytopes, we introduce line shellings for the lattice of flats of a matroid: given a normal complex for a Bergman fan of a matroid induced by a building set, we show that the lexicographic order of the coordinates of its vertices is a shelling order. This gives a new proof of Björner's classical result that the order complex of the lattice of flats of a matroid is shellable, and demonstrates shellability for all nested set complexes for matroids.
Structural properties of nested set complexes
We study structural and topological properties of nested set complexes of matroids with arbitrary building sets, proving that these complexes are vertex decomposable and admit convex ear decompositions. These results unify and generalize several recent and classical theorems on Bergman complexes and augmented Bergman complexes of matroids. As a first application, we show that the $h$-vector of a nested set complex is strongly flawless and, in particular, top-heavy. We then specialize to the boundary complex of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$ of rational stable marked curves, which coincides with the complex of trees, establishing new structural decomposition theorems and deriving combinatorial formulas for its face enumeration polynomials.
Convex Geometry of Building Sets
Building sets were introduced in the study of wonderful compactifications of hyperplane arrangement complements and were later generalized to finite meet-semilattices. Convex geometries, the duals of antimatroids, offer a robust combinatorial abstraction of convexity. Supersolvable convex geometries and antimatroids appear in the study of poset closure operators, Coxeter groups, and matroid activities. We prove that the building sets on a finite meet-semilattice form a supersolvable convex geometry. As an application, we demonstrate that building sets and nested set complexes respect certain restrictions of finite meet-semilattices unifying and extending results of several authors.

A separable quantum state shared between parties $A$ and $B$ can be symmetrically extended to a quantum state shared between party $A$ and parties $B_1,\ldots ,B_k$ for every $k\in\mathbf{N}$. Quantum states that are not separable, i.e., entangled, do not have this property. This phenomenon is known as "monogamy of entanglement". We show that monogamy is not only a feature of quantum theory, but that it characterizes the minimal tensor product of general pairs of convex cones $\mathsf{C}_A$ and $\mathsf{C}_B$: The elements of the minimal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\min} \mathsf{C}_B$ are precisely the tensors that can be symmetrically extended to elements in the maximal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\max} \mathsf{C}^{\otimes_{\max} k}_B$ for every $k\in\mathbf{N}$. Equivalently, the minimal tensor product of two cones is the intersection of the nested sets of $k$-extendible tensors. It is a natural question when the minimal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\min} \mathsf{C}_B$ coincides with the set of $k$-extendible tensors for some finite $k$. We show that this is universally the case for every cone $\mathsf{C}_A$ if and only if $\mathsf{C}_B$ is a polyhedral cone with a base given by a product of simplices. Our proof makes use of a new characterization of products of simplices up to affine equivalence that we believe is of independent interest.

In this paper we find monomial bases for the integer cohomology rings of compact wonderful models of toric arrangements. In the description of the monomials various combinatorial objects come into play: building sets, nested sets, and the fan of a suitable toric variety. We provide some examples computed via a SageMath program and then we focus on the case of the toric arrangements associated with root systems of type A. Here the combinatorial description of our basis offers a geometrical point of view on the relation between some Eulerian statistics on the symmetric group.
Achieving Capacity Region of 2-users Weak GIC by Enlarging the Core in a Nested Set of Polymatroids (continuation of arXiv:2012.07820 "Optimality of Gaussian in Enlarging HK Rate Region, and its Overlap with ...")
This article shows that achieving capacity region of a 2-users weak Gaussian Interference Channel (GIC) is equivalent to enlarging the core in a nested set of Polymatroids (each equivalent to capacity region of a multiple-access channel) through maximizing a minimum rate, then projecting along its orthogonal span and continuing recursively. This formulation relies on defining dummy private messages to capture the effect of interference in GIC. It follows that relying on independent Gaussian random code-books is optimum, and the corresponding solution corresponds to achieving the boundary in HK constraints.
Separable elements and splittings of Weyl groups

We continue the study of separable elements in finite Weyl groups. These elements generalize the well-studied class of separable permutations. We show that the multiplication map $W/U \times U \to W$ is a length-additive bijection, or splitting, of the Weyl group $W$ when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element; this generalizes a result for the symmetric group, answering an open problem of Wei.
For a generalized quotient of the symmetric group, we show that this multiplication map is a bijection if and only if $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order generated by a separable element, thereby classifying those generalized quotients which induce splittings of the symmetric group, resolving a problem of Björner and Wachs from 1988. We also prove that this map is always surjective when $U$ is an order ideal in right weak order. Interpreting these sets of permutations as linear extensions of 2-dimensional posets gives the first direct combinatorial proof of an inequality due originally to Sidorenko in 1991, answering an open problem Morales, Pak, and Panova. We also prove a new $q$-analog of Sidorenko's formula. All of these results are conjectured to extend to arbitrary finite Weyl groups.
Finally, we show that separable elements in $W$ are in bijection with the faces of all dimensions of several copies of the graph associahedron of the Dynkin diagram of $W$. This correspondence associates to each separable element $w$ a certain nested set; we give product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower order ideals generated by $w$ in terms of these nested sets, generalizing several known formulas.

For any triple given by a positive integer n, a finite group G, and a faithful representation V of G, one can describe a subspace arrangement whose intersection lattice is a generalized Dowling lattice in the sense of Hanlon. In this paper we construct the minimal De Concini-Procesi wonderful model associated to this subspace arrangement and give a description of its boundary. Our aim is to point out the nice poset provided by the intersections of the irreducible components in the boundary, which provides a geometric realization of the nested set poset of this generalized Dowling lattice. It can be represented by a family of forests with leaves and labelings that depend on the triple (n,G,V). We will study it from the enumerative point of view in the case when G is abelian.
The Active Bijection 2.a - Decomposition of activities for matroid bases, and Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors
We introduce and study filtrations of a matroid on a linearly ordered ground set, which are particular sequences of nested sets. A given basis can be decomposed into a uniquely defined sequence of bases of minors, such that these bases have an internal/external activity equal to 1/0 or 0/1 (in the sense of Tutte polynomial activities). This decomposition, which we call the active filtration/partition of the basis, refines the known partition of the ground set into internal and external elements with respect to a given basis. It can be built by a certain closure operator, which we call the active closure. It relies only on the fundamental bipartite graph of the basis and can be expressed also as a decomposition of general bipartite graphs on a linearly ordered set of vertices.
From this, first, structurally, we obtain that the set of all bases can be canonically partitioned and decomposed in terms of such bases of minors induced by filtrations. Second, enumeratively, we derive an expression of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors. This expression refines at the same time the classical expressions in terms of basis activities and orientation activities (if the matroid is oriented), and the well-known convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial. Third, in a companion paper of the same series (No. 2.b), we use this decomposition of matroid bases, along with a similar decomposition of oriented matroids, and along with a bijection in the 1/0 activity case from a previous paper (No. 1), to define the canonical active bijection between orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid, as well as various related bijections.
Tangles and the Mona Lisa
We show how an image can, in principle, be described by the tangles of the graph of its pixels.
The tangle-tree theorem provides a nested set of separations that efficiently distinguish all the distinguishable tangles in a graph. This translates to a small data set from which the image can be reconstructed.
The tangle duality theorem says that a graph either has a certain-order tangle or a tree-structure witnessing that this cannot exist. This tells us the maximum resolution at which the image contains meaningful information.
Gray-coding through nested sets
We consider the following combinatorial question. Let $$ S_0 \subset S_1 \subset S_2 \subset ...\subset S_m $$ be nested sets, where #$(S_i) = i$. A move consists of altering one of the sets $S_i$, $1 \le i \le m-1$, in a manner so that the nested condition still holds and #$(S_i)$ is still $i$. Our goal is to find a sequence of moves that exhausts through all subsets of $S_m$ (other than the initial sets $S_i$) with no repeats. We call this "Gray-coding through nested sets" because of the analogy with Frank Gray's theory of exhausting through integers while altering only one bit at a time. Our main result is an efficient algorithm that solves this problem. As a byproduct, we produce new families of cyclic Gray codes through binary $m$-bit integers.

In this paper we show a a proof by explicit bijections of the famous Kirkman-Cayley formula for the number of dissections of a convex polygon. Our starting point is the bijective correspondence between the set of nested sets made by \(k\) subsets of \(\{1,2,...,n\}\) with cardinality \(\geq 2\) and the set of partitions of \(\{1,2,...,n+k-1\}\) into \(k\) parts with cardinality \(\geq 2\).
Signed tree associahedra

An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to the triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. A particularly elegant realization of the associahedron, due to S. Shnider and S. Sternberg and popularized by J.-L. Loday, has been generalized in two directions: on the one hand by A. Postnikov to obtain a realization of the graph associahedra of M. Carr and S. Devadoss, and on the other hand by C. Hohlweg and C. Lange to obtain multiple realizations of the associahedron parametrized by a sequence of signs. The goal of this paper is to unify and extend these two constructions to signed tree associahedra.
We define the notions of signed tubes and signed nested sets on a vertex-signed tree, generalizing the classical notions of tubes and nested sets for unsigned trees. The resulting signed nested complexes are all simplicial spheres, but they are not necessarily isomorphic, even if they arise from signed trees with the same underlying unsigned structure. We then construct a signed tree associahedron realizing the signed nested complex, obtained by removing certain well-chosen facets from the classical permutahedron. We study relevant properties of its normal fan and of certain orientations of its 1-skeleton, in connection to the braid arrangement and to the weak order. Our main tool, both for combinatorial and geometric perspectives, is the notion of spines on a vertex-signed tree, which extend the families of Schröder and binary search trees.
Decomposition Complexes
We introduce decomposition complexes of posets, which generalize order complexes. The main advantage of our construction is that decomposition complexes are closed under taking products. Other special instances of this theory include nested set complexes as well as Bergman complexes.
New light on Bergman complexes by decomposing matroid types

Bergman complexes are polyhedral complexes associated to matroids. Faces of these complexes are certain matroids, called matroid types, too. In order to understand the structure of these faces we decompose matroid types into direct summands. Ardila/Klivans proved that the Bergman Complex of a matroid can be subdivided into the order complex of the proper part of its lattice of flats. Beyond that Feichtner/Sturmfels showed that the Bergman complex can even be subdivided to the even coarser nested set complex. We will give a much shorter and more general proof of this fact. Generalizing formulas proposed by Ardila/Klivans and Feichtner/Sturmfels for special cases, we present a decomposition into direct sums working for faces of any of these complexes. Additionally we show that it is the finest possible decomposition for faces of the Bergman complex.

We define and study the cyclic Bergman fan of a matroid M, which is a simplicial polyhedral fan supported on the tropical linear space T(M) of M and is amenable to computational purposes. It slightly refines the nested set structure on T(M), and its rays are in bijection with flats of M which are either cyclic flats or singletons. We give a fast algorithm for calculating it, making some computational applications of tropical geometry now viable. Our C++ implementation, called TropLi, and a tool for computing vertices of Newton polytopes of A-discriminants, are both available online.
On stretching the interval simplex-permutohedron
A family of polytopes introduced by E.M. Feichtner, A. Postnikov and B. Sturmfels, which were named nestohedra, consists in each dimension of an interval of polytopes starting with a simplex and ending with a permutohedron. This paper investigates a problem of changing and extending the boundaries of these intervals. An iterative application of Feichtner-Kozlov procedure of forming complexes of nested sets is a solution of this problem. By using a simple algebraic presentation of members of nested sets it is possible to avoid the problem of increasing the complexity of the structure of nested curly braces in elements of the produced simplicial complexes.

Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we prove every component of the critical locus $\crit(Φ)$ of $Φ$ has codimension at most $p$, and $\crit(Φ)$ is a union of intersections of level sets of rational master functions. We give conditions that guarantee $\crit(Φ)$ is nonempty and every component has codimension equal to $p$, in terms of syzygies among polynomial master functions.
If \A is $p$-generic, then $D$ is contained in the degree $p$ resonance variety $\R^p(\A)$ -- in this sense the present work complements previous work on resonance and critical loci of master functions. Any arrangement is 1-generic; in case $p=1$ we give a precise description of $\crit(Φ_l)$ in case $l$ lies in an isotropic subspace $D$ of $A^1$, using the multinet structure on \A corresponding to $D\subseteq \R^1(\A)$. This is carried out in detail for the Hessian arrangement. Finally, for arbitrary $p$ and \A, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of integral one-forms to span such a subspace, in terms of nested sets of \A, using tropical implicitization.
