Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement in an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. The freeness of restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ was first settled by a case-by-case method by Orlik and the second author (1993), and later by a uniform argument by Douglass (1999). Prior to this, Orlik and Solomon (1983) had completely determined the exponents of these arrangements by exhaustion. A classical result due to Orlik, Solomon and the second author (1986), asserts that the exponents of any $A_1$ restriction, i.e., the restriction of $\mathcal{A}$ to a hyperplane, are given by $\{m_1,\ldots, m_{\ell-1}\}$, where $\exp(\mathcal{A})=\{m_1,\ldots, m_{\ell}\}$ with $m_1 \le \cdots\le m_{\ell}$. As a next step towards conceptual understanding of the restriction exponents we will investigate the $A_1^2$ restrictions, i.e., the restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ to the subspaces of type $A_1^2$. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the exponents and describe bases for the modules of derivations of the $A_1^2$ restrictions in terms of the classical notion of related roots by Kostant (1955).

In the study of free arrangements, the most useful result to construct/check free arrangements is the addition-deletion theorem. Recently, the multiple version of the addition theorem is proved, called the multiple addition theorem (MAT) to prove the ideal-free theorem. The aim of this article is to give the deletion version of MAT, the multiple deletion theorem (MDT). Also, we can generalize MAT from the viewpoint of our new proof. Moreover, we introduce their restriction version, a multiple restriction theorem (MRT). Applications of them including the combinatorial freeness of the extended Catalan arrangements are given.

In this article we prove that the ideal-Shi arrangements are free central arrangements of hyperplanes satisfying the dual-partition formula. Then it immediately follows that there exists a saturated free filtration of the cone of any affine Weyl arrangement such that each filter is a free subarrangement satisfying the dual-partition formula. This generalizes the main result in \cite{ABCHT} which affirmatively settled a conjecture by Sommers and Tymoczko \cite{SomTym}.

A Weyl arrangement is the arrangement defined by the root system of a finite Weyl group. When a set of positive roots is an ideal in the root poset, we call the corresponding arrangement an ideal subarrangement. Our main theorem asserts that any ideal subarrangement is a free arrangement and that its exponents are given by the dual partition of the height distribution, which was conjectured by Sommers-Tymoczko. In particular, when an ideal subarrangement is equal to the entire Weyl arrangement, our main theorem yields the celebrated formula by Shapiro, Steinberg, Kostant, and Macdonald. Our proof of the main theorem heavily depends on the theory of free arrangements and thus greatly differs from the earlier proofs of the formula.

In his affirmative answer to the Edelman-Reiner conjecture, Yoshinaga proved that the logarithmic derivation modules of the cones of the extended Shi arrangements are free modules. However, all we know about the bases is their existence and degrees. In this article, we introduce two distinguished bases for the modules. More specifically, we will define and study the simple-root basis plus (SRB+) and the simple-root basis minus (SRB-) when a primitive derivation is fixed. They have remarkable properties relevant to the simple roots and those properties characterize the bases.

Let B be a real hyperplane arrangement which is stable under the action of a Coxeter group W. Then B acts naturally on the set of chambers of B. We assume that B is disjoint from the Coxeter arrangement A=A(W) of W. In this paper, we show that the W-orbits of the set of chambers of B are in one-to-one correspondence with the chambers of C=A\cup B which are contained in an arbitrarily fixed chamber of A. From this fact, we find that the number of W-orbits of the set of chambers of B is given by the number of chambers of C divided by the order of W. We will also study the set of chambers of C which are contained in a chamber b of B. We prove that the cardinality of this set is equal to the order of the isotropy subgroup W_b of b. We illustrate these results with some examples, and solve an open problem in Kamiya, Takemura and Terao [Ranking patterns of unfolding models of codimension one, Adv. in Appl. Math. (2010)] by using our results.

The braid arrangement is the Coxeter arrangement of the type $A_\ell$. The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the braid arrangement and their parallel translations. In this paper, we give an explicit basis construction for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangement. The essential ingredient of our recipe is the Bernoulli polynomials.

Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\A$ be the corresponding Weyl arrangement. A deformation of $\A$ is an affine arrangement which is obtained by adding to each hyperplane $H\in\A$ several parallel translations of $H$ by the positive root (and its integer multiples) perpendicular to $H$. We say that a deformation is $W$-equivariant if the number of parallel hyperplanes of each hyperplane $H\in \A$ depends only on the $W$-orbit of $H$. We prove that the conings of the $W$-equivariant deformations are free arrangements under a Shi-Catalan condition and give a formula for the number of chambers. This generalizes Yoshinaga's theorem conjectured by Edelman-Reiner.

Let $\A$ be an irreducible Coxeter arrangement and $W$ be its Coxeter group. Then $W$ naturally acts on $\A$. A multiplicity $\bfm : \A\rightarrow \Z$ is said to be equivariant when $\bfm$ is constant on each $W$-orbit of $\A$. In this article, we prove that the multi-derivation module $D(\A, \bfm)$ is a free module whenever $\bfm$ is equivariant by explicitly constructing a basis, which generalizes the main theorem of \cite{T02}. The main tool is a primitive derivation and its covariant derivative. Moreover, we show that the $W$-invariant part $D(\A, \bfm)^{W}$ for any multiplicity $\bfm$ is a free module over the $W$-invariant subring.

We consider the problem of counting the number of possible sets of rankings (called ranking patterns) generated by unfolding models of codimension one. We express the ranking patterns as slices of the braid arrangement and show that all braid slices, including those not associated with unfolding models, are in one-to-one correspondence with the chambers of an arrangement. By identifying those which are associated with unfolding models, we find the number of ranking patterns. We also give an upper bound for the number of ranking patterns when the difference by a permutation of objects is ignored.

We define {\bf primitive derivations} for Coxeter arrangements which may not be irreducible. Using those derivations, we introduce the {\bf primitive filtrations} of the module of invariant logarithmic differential forms for an arbitrary Coxeter arrangement with an arbitrary multiplicity. In particular, when the Coxeter arrangement is irreducible with a constant multiplicity, the primitive filtration has already been studied, which generalizes the Hodge filtration introduced by K. Saito.

Let $W$ be a finite irreducible real reflection group, which is a Coxeter group. We explicitly construct a basis for the module of differential 1-forms with logarithmic poles along the Coxeter arrangement by using a primitive derivation. As a consequence, we extend the Hodge filtration, indexed by nonnegative integers, into a filtration indexed by all integers. This filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of poles. The results are translated into the derivation case.

A central arrangement $\A$ of hyperplanes in an $\ell$-dimensional vector space $V$ is said to be {\it totally free} if a multiarrangement $(\A, m)$ is free for any multiplicity $ m : \A\to \Z_{> 0}$. It has been known that $\A$ is totally free whenever $\ell \le 2$. In this article, we will prove that there does not exist any totally free arrangement other than the obvious ones, that is, a product of one-dimensional arrangements and two-dimensional ones.

An integral coefficient matrix determines an integral arrangement of hyperplanes in R^m. After modulo q reduction, the same matrix determines an arrangement A_q of "hyperplanes" in Z^m. In the special case of central arrangements, Kamiya, Takemura and Terao [J. Algebraic Combin., to appear] showed that the cardinality of the complement of A_q in Z_q^m is a quasi-polynomial in q. Moreover, they proved in the central case that the intersection lattice of A_q is periodic from some q on. The present paper generalizes these results to the case of non-central arrangements. The paper also studies the arrangement B_m^{[0,a]} of Athanasiadis [J. Algebraic Combin. Vol.10 (1999), 207-225] to illustrate our results.

Let $q$ be a positive integer. In our recent paper, we proved that the cardinality of the complement of an integral arrangement, after the modulo $q$ reduction, is a quasi-polynomial of $q$, which we call the characteristic quasi-polynomial. In this paper, we study general properties of the characteristic quasi-polynomial as well as discuss two important examples: the arrangements of reflecting hyperplanes arising from irreducible root systems and the mid-hyperplane arrangements. In the root system case, we present a beautiful formula for the generating function of the characteristic quasi-polynomial which has been essentially obtained by Ch. Athanasiadis and by A. Blass and B. Sagan. On the other hand, it is hard to find the generating function of the characteristic quasi-polynomial in the mid-hyperplane arrangement case. We determine them when the dimension is less than six.

We study central hyperplane arrangements with integral coefficients modulo positive integers $q$. We prove that the cardinality of the complement of the hyperplanes is a quasi-polynomial in two ways, first via the theory of elementary divisors and then via the theory of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. This result is useful for determining the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding real arrangement. With the former approach, we also prove that intersection lattices modulo $q$ are periodic except for a finite number of $q$'s.

The addition-deletion theorems for hyperplane arrangements, which were originally shown in [H. Terao, Arrangements of hyperplanes and their freeness I, II. J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo Sect. IA Math. 27 (1980), 293--320], provide useful ways to construct examples of free arrangements. In this article, we prove addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements. A key to the generalization is the definition of a new multiplicity, called the Euler multiplicity, of a restricted multiarrangement. We compute the Euler multiplicities in many cases. Then we apply the addition-deletion theorems to various arrangements including supersolvable arrangements and the Coxeter arrangement of type $A_{3}$ to construct free and non-free multiarrangements.

Let ${\mathcal A}$ be a nonempty real central arrangement of hyperplanes and ${\rm \bf Ch}$ be the set of chambers of ${\mathcal A}$. Each hyperplane $H$ defines a half-space $H^{+} $ and the other half-space $H^{-}$. Let $B = \{+, -\}$. For $H\in {\mathcal A}$, define a map $ε_{H}^{+} : {\rm \bf Ch} \to B$ by $ε_{H}^{+} (C)=+ \text{(if} C\subseteq H^{+}) \text{and} ε_{H}^{+} (C)= - \text{(if} C\subseteq H^{-}).$ Define $ε_{H}^{-}=-ε_{H}^{+}.$ Let ${\rm \bf Ch}^{m} = {\rm \bf Ch}\times{\rm \bf Ch}\times...\times{\rm \bf Ch} (m\text{times}).$ Then the maps $ε_{H}^{\pm}$ induce the maps $ε_{H}^{\pm} : {\rm \bf Ch}^{m} \to B^{m} $. We will study the admissible maps $Φ: {\rm \bf Ch}^{m} \to {\rm \bf Ch}$ which are compatible with every $ε_{H}^{\pm}$. Suppose $|{\mathcal A}|\geq 3$ and $m\geq 2$. Then we will show that ${\mathcal A}$ is indecomposable if and only if every admissible map is a projection to a omponent. When ${\mathcal A}$ is a braid arrangement, which is indecomposable, this result is equivalent to Arrow's impossibility theorem in economics. We also determine the set of admissible maps explicitly for every nonempty real central arrangement.

In [5] (=Terao, H.: Multiderivations of Coxeter arrangements. Inventiones math., 148 (2002) 659--674), we constructed a basis for the contact-order filtration of the module of derivations on the orbit space of a finite real reflection group acting on an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. Recently M. Yoshinaga constructed another basis for the contact-order filtration in [7] (=Yoshinaga, M.: The primitive derivation and freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements. preprint 2002). In this note we give an explicit formula relating Yoshinaga's basis to the basis given in [5]. The two bases turn out to be equal (up to a constant matrix).
