Chain characteristic polynomials of matroids
In this note we introduce a family of polynomials on a matroid derived from chain Tutte polynomials which generalize the classic and ubiquitous characteristic polynomial. We show that the coefficients of these polynomials alternate and present a recursion for any matroid. The classic characteristic polynomials were motivated by the chromatic polynomial on graphs. We define a generalized proper vertex coloring on a graph, which we call coupled multicoloring. We also define a generalized nowhere zero flow, which we call coupled multicommodity flow. Then we show that these chain characteristic polynomials enumerate the number of coupled multicolorings and coupled multicommodity flows on a graph. We conclude by listing multiple problems on enumerative properties of chain characteristic polynomials.

Chain Tutte polynomials
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.

A non-associative incidence near-ring with a generalized Möbius function
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a convolution product on 3-variable partial flag functions of a locally finite poset that produces a generalized Möbius function. Under the product this generalized Möbius function is a one sided inverse of the zeta function and satisfies many generalizations of classical results. In particular we prove analogues of Phillip Hall's Theorem on the Möbius function as an alternating sum of chain counts, Weisner's theorem, and Rota's Crosscut Theorem. A key ingredient to these results is that this function is an overlapping product of classical Möbius functions. Using this generalized Möbius function we define analogues of the characteristic polynomial and Möbius polynomials for ranked lattices. We compute these polynomials for certain families of matroids and prove that this generalized Möbius polynomial has -1 as root if the matroid is modular. Using results from Ardila and Sanchez we prove that this generalized characteristic polynomial is a matroid valuation.

Derivation degree sequences of non-free arrangements

In this note we study the logarithmic derivation module of a non-free arrangement. We prove a generalized addition theorem for all arrangements. This addition theorem allows us to find various relationships between non-free arrangements, free arrangements and restriction counts. For graphic arrangements we can use these results to find a lower bound for the maximal degree generator in terms of triangles in the associated graph. We also apply these results to the case of hypersolvable arrangements where we define hyperexponents and use them to find a lower bound for their maximal degree generator.

Partial flag incidence algebras
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this work came from studying the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where partial flag Whitney numbers play a central role.

Intersection cohomology of the symmetric reciprocal plane

We compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the uniform matroid of rank n-1 on n elements by proving that the i-th coefficient of is equal to the number of ways to choose i non-intersecting chords in an (n-i+1)-gon. We also show that the corresponding intersection cohomology group is isomorphic to the irreducible representation of the symmetric group associated to the partition [n-2i,2,...,2].

The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We associate to every matroid M a polynomial with integer coefficients, which we call the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of M, in analogy with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in representation theory. We conjecture that the coefficients are always non-negative, and we prove this conjecture for representable matroids by interpreting our polynomials as intersection cohomology Poincare polynomials. We also introduce a q-deformation of the Mobius algebra of M, and use our polynomials to define a special basis for this deformation, analogous to the canonical basis of the Hecke algebra. We conjecture that the structure coefficients for multiplication in this special basis are non-negative, and we verify this conjecture in numerous examples.

The Enumerative Geometry of Hyperplane Arrangements
We study enumerative questions on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(L)$ of hyperplane arrangements with a given intersection lattice $L$. Mnëv's universality theorem suggests that these moduli spaces can be arbitrarily complicated; indeed it is even difficult to compute the dimension $D =\dim \mathcal{M}(L)$. Embedding $\mathcal{M}(L)$ in a product of projective spaces, we study the degree $N=\mathrm{deg} \mathcal{M}(L)$, which can be interpreted as the number of arrangements in $\mathcal{M}(L)$ that pass through $D$ points in general position. For generic arrangements $N$ can be computed combinatorially and this number also appears in the study of the Chow variety of zero dimensional cycles. We compute $D$ and $N$ using Schubert calculus in the case where $L$ is the intersection lattice of the arrangement obtained by taking multiple cones over a generic arrangement. We also calculate the characteristic numbers for families of generic arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^2$ with 3 and 4 lines.

Limits with braid arrangements
We define a monoid structure on the set of $k$-equal arrangements and use this structure to define limits of braid arrangements. We compute the cohomology of the associated limits of rational models of the arrangements complex complements. We collect these complexes together into one complex by creating a new differential and product on their direct sum and show that the resulting complex is exact.

Skeleton Simplicial Evaluation Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a subspace arrangement over a finite field we study the evaluation code defined on the arrangement's set of points. The length of this code is given by the subspace arrangement's characteristic polynomial. For coordinate subspace arrangements, the dimension is bounded below by the face vector of the corresponding simplicial complex. The minimum distance is determined for coordinate subspace arrangements where the simplicial complex is a skeleton.
Local cohomology of logarithmic forms

Let Y be a divisor on a smooth algebraic variety X. We investigate the geometry of the Jacobian scheme of Y, homological invariants derived from logarithmic differential forms along Y, and their relationship with the property that Y is a free divisor. We consider arrangements of hyperplanes as a source of examples and counterexamples. In particular, we make a complete calculation of the local cohomology of logarithmic forms of generic hyperplane arrangements.

Edge colored hypergraphic arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subspace arrangement defined by intersections of hyperplanes of the braid arrangement can be encoded by an edge colored hypergraph. It turns out that the characteristic polynomial of this type of subspace arrangement is given by a generalized chromatic polynomial of the associated edge colored hypergraph. The main result of this paper supplies a sufficient condition for the existence of non-trivial Massey products of the subspace arrangements complex complement. This is accomplished by studying a spectral sequence associated to the Lie coalgebras of Sinha and Walter.

Equivalence classes of Latin squares and nets in CP^2
The fundamental combinatorial structure of a net in CP^2 is its associated set of mutually orthogonal latin squares. We define equivalence classes of sets of orthogonal Latin squares by label equivalences of the lines of the corresponding net in CP^2. Then we count these equivalence classes for small cases. Finally, we prove that the realization spaces of these classes in CP^2 are empty to show some non-existence results for 4-nets in CP^2.

The Euler multiplicity and addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 77 (2008), 335-348 • View PublicationBIB
The addition-deletion theorems for hyperplane arrangements, which were originally shown in [H. Terao, Arrangements of hyperplanes and their freeness I, II. J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo Sect. IA Math. 27 (1980), 293--320], provide useful ways to construct examples of free arrangements. In this article, we prove addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements. A key to the generalization is the definition of a new multiplicity, called the Euler multiplicity, of a restricted multiarrangement. We compute the Euler multiplicities in many cases. Then we apply the addition-deletion theorems to various arrangements including supersolvable arrangements and the Coxeter arrangement of type $A_{3}$ to construct free and non-free multiarrangements.
