Short Proofs in Algebraic and Enumerative Combinatorics
We present several short proofs that resolve open problems from the algebraic and enumerative combinatorics literature. First, we consider the echelonmotion operator on modular lattices. We resolve a conjecture of Defant, Jiang, Marczinzik, Segovia, Speyer, Thomas, and Williams and, consequently, obtain a new algebraic bijective proof of a classical result of Dilworth. Second, we consider statistics on parking functions studied by Stanley and Yin and by Hopkins. We prove some conjectures of Hopkins. Third, we consider centralizers in the plactic monoid. We settle two conjectures of Sagan and Wilson. All of these proofs were obtained autonomously by ChatGPT 5.4 Pro.
Mixed jeu de taquin and a problem of Soojin Cho
Serrano (2010) introduced the shifted plactic monoid, governing Haiman's (1989) mixed insertion algorithm, as a type B analogue of the classical plactic monoid that connects jeu de taquin of Young tableaux with the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion algorithm. Serrano proposed a corresponding definition of skew shifted plactic Schur functions. Cho (2013) disproved Serrano's conjecture regarding this definition, by showing that the functions do not live in the desired ring and hence cannot provide an algebraic interpretation of tableau rectification or of the corresponding structure coefficients. Cho asked for a new definition with particular properties. We introduce such a definition and prove that it behaves as desired. We also introduce a new jeu de taquin theory that computes mixed insertion.

Properties of plactic monoid centralizers
Let u be a word over the positive integers P. Motivated by a question involving crystal graphs, Sagan and Wilson initiated the study of the centralizer of u in the plactic monoid which is the set C(u) = {w | uw is Knuth equivalent to wu}. In particular, they conjectured the following stability phenomenon: for any u there is a positive integer K depending only on u such that C(u^k) = C(u^K) for k >= K. We prove that this property holds for various u including words consisting of only ones and twos, as well as permutations. Sagan and Wilson also considered c_{n,m}(u) which is the number of w in C(u) of length n and maximum at most m. They showed that c_{n,m}(1) is a polynomial in m of degree n-1 and conjectured properties of the coefficients when it is expanded in a binomial coefficient basis. We prove some of these conjectures, for example, that the coefficients are always nonnegative integers.
Constructed tableaux and a new shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule
We give a new Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Schubert structure coefficients of isotropic Grassmannians, equivalently for the multiplication of $P$-Schur functions. Serrano (2010) previously gave a formula in terms of classes in his shifted plactic monoid. However, this formula is challenging to use because of the difficulty of characterizing shifted plactic classes. We give the first algebraic proof of this formula. We then use it to obtain a new rule that is easy to implement. Our rule is based on identifying a subtle analogue of Yamanouchi tableaux, which we characterize. We show that for some families of structure coefficients, our rule leads to an algorithm with exponentially better time complexity than the original rule of Stembridge (1989).
A universal characterization of the shifted plactic monoid
The plactic monoid $\mathbf{P}$ of Lascoux and Schützenberger (1981) plays an important role in proofs of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing multiplicities in the linear representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of Grassmannians. Commonly, $\mathbf{P}$ is defined as a quotient of a free monoid by relations derived from a careful analysis of Schensted's insertion algorithm and the jeu de taquin algorithm on semistandard Young tableaux. However, Lascoux and Schützenberger also gave an intrinsic characterization of $\mathbf{P}$ via a universal property. Serrano's (2010) shifted plactic monoid $\mathbf{S}$ is an analogue of $\mathbf{P}$ that governs instead the projective representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of isotropic Grassmannians. We provide a universal property for $\mathbf{S}$, analogous to the Lascoux-Schützenberger characterization of $\mathbf{P}$.

Centralizers in the plactic monoid
Let u be a word over the positive integers. Motivated in part by a question from representation theory, we study the centralizer set of u which is C(u) = {w | uw is Knuth-equivalent to wu}. In particular, we give various necessary conditions for w to be in C(u). We also characterize C(u) when u has few letters, when it has a single repeated entry, or when it is a certain type of decreasing sequence. We consider c_{n,m}(u), the number of w in C(u) of length n with max w at most m. We prove that for |u| = 1 the value of this function depends only on the relative sizes of u and m and not on their actual values. And for various u we use Stanley's theory of poset partitions to show that, for fixed n, c_{n,m}(u) is a polynomial in m with certain degree and leading coefficient. We end with various conjectures and directions for further research.
Power Quotients of Plactic-like Monoids
Published in EPTCS 403, 2024, pp. 12-17 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we describe the quotients of several plactic-like monoids by the least congruences containing the relations $a^{σ(a)} = a$ with $σ(a)\ge 2$ for every generator $a$. The starting point for this description is the recent paper of Abram and Reutenauer about the so-called stylic monoid which happens to be the quotient of the plactic monoid by the relations $a^2 = a$ for every letter $a$. The plactic-like monoids considered are the plactic monoid itself, the Chinese monoid, and the sylvester monoid. In each case we describe: a set of normal forms, and the idempotents; and obtain formulae for their size.

From plactic monoids to hypoplactic monoids
The plactic monoids can be obtained from the tensor product of crystals. Similarly, the hypoplactic monoids can be obtained from the quasi-tensor product of quasi-crystals. In this paper, we present a unified approach to these constructions by expressing them in the context of quasi-crystals. We provide a sufficient condition to obtain a quasi-crystal monoid for the quasi-tensor product from a quasi-crystal monoid for the tensor product. We also establish a sufficient condition for a hypoplactic monoid to be a quotient of the plactic monoid associated to the same seminormal quasi-crystal.
Structure of quasi-crystal graphs and applications to the combinatorics of quasi-symmetric functions
Crystal graphs are powerful combinatorial tools for working with the plactic monoid and symmetric functions. Quasi-crystal graphs are an analogous concept for the hypoplactic monoid and quasi-symmetric functions. This paper makes a combinatorial study of these objects. We explain a previously-observed isomorphism of components of the quasi-crystal graph, and provide an explicit description using a new combinatorial structure called a quasi-array. Then two conjectures of Maas-Gariépy on the interaction of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions and Schur functions and on the arrangement of quasi-crystal components within crystal components are answered, the former positively, the latter negatively.
Quasi-crystals for arbitrary root systems and associated generalizations of the hypoplactic monoid
The hypoplactic monoid was introduced by Krob and Thibon through a presentation and through quasi-ribbon tableaux and an insertion algorithm. Just as Kashiwara crystals enriched the structure of the plactic monoid and allowed its generalization, the first and third authors of this paper introduced a construction of the hypoplactic monoid by identifying vertices in a quasi-crystal graph derived from the crystal graph associated to the general linear Lie algebra. Although this construction is based on Kashiwara's work, it cannot be extended to other crystal graphs, since the analogous quasi-Kashiwara operators on words do not admit a recursive definition. This paper addresses these issues. A general notion of quasi-crystal is introduced, followed by a study of its properties and relation with crystals. A combinatorial study of quasi-crystals is then made by associating a quasi-crystal graph to each quasi-crystal, which for the class of seminormal quasi-crystals results in a one-to-one correspondence. To model the binary operation of the hypoplactic monoid by quasi-crystals, a notion of quasi-tensor product of quasi-crystals is introduced, along with a combinatorial way of computing it similar to the signature rule for the tensor product of crystals. This framework allows the generalization of the classical hypoplactic monoid to a family of hypoplactic monoids associated to the various simple Lie algebras. The quasi-crystal structure is then used to establish algebraic properties of the hypoplactic monoid associated to the symplectic Lie algebra.
Representations and identities of plactic-like monoids

We exhibit faithful representations of the hypoplactic, stalactic, taiga, sylvester, Baxter and right patience sorting monoids of each finite rank as monoids of upper triangular matrices over any semiring from a large class including the tropical semiring and fields of characteristic $0$. By analysing the image of these representations, we show that the variety generated by a single hypoplactic (respectively, stalactic or taiga) monoid of rank at least $2$ coincides with the variety generated by the natural numbers together with a fixed finite monoid $\mathcal{H}$ (respectively, $\mathcal{F}$) forming a proper subvariety of the variety generated by the plactic monoid of rank $2$.

The Stylic Monoid
Published • View PublicationBIB
The free monoid $A^*$ on a finite totally ordered alphabet $A$ acts at the left on columns, by Schensted left insertion. This defines a finite monoid, denoted $Styl(A)$ and called the stylic monoid. It is canonically a quotient of the plactic monoid. Main results are: the cardinality of $Styl(A)$ is equal to the number of partitions of a set on $|A|+1$ elements. We give a bijection with so-called $N$-tableaux, similar to Schensted's algorithm, explaining this fact. Presentation of $Styl(A)$: it is generated by $A$ subject to the plactic (Knuth) relations and the idempotent relations $a^2=a$, $a\in A$. The canonical involutive anti-automorphism on $A^*$, which reverses the order on $A$, induces an involution of $Styl(A)$, which similarly to the corresponding involution of the plactic monoid, may be computed by an evacuation-like operation (Schützenberger involution on tableaux) on so-called standard immaculate tableaux (which are in bijection with partitions). The monoid $Styl(A)$ is $J$-trivial, and the $J$-order of $Styl(A)$ is graded: the co-rank is given by the number of elements in the $N$-tableau. The monoid $Styl(A)$ is the syntactic monoid for the the function which associates to each word $w\in A^*$ the length of its longest strictly decreasing subword.

Super jeu de taquin and combinatorics of super tableaux of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents a combinatorial study of the super plactic monoid of type A, which is related to the representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. We introduce the analogue of the Schützenberger's jeu de taquin on the structure of super tableaux over a signed alphabet. We show that this procedure which transforms super skew tableaux into super Young tableaux is compatible with the super plactic congruence and it is confluent. We deduce properties relating the super jeu de taquin to insertion algorithms on super tableaux. Moreover, we introduce the super evacuation procedure as an involution on super tableaux and we show its compatibility with the super plactic congruence. Finally, we describe the super jeu de taquin in terms of Fomin's growth diagrams in order to give a combinatorial version of the super Littlewood--Richardson rule.

Up- and Down-Operators on Young's Lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The up-operators $u_i$ and down-operators $d_i$ (introduced as Schur operators by Fomin) act on partitions by adding/removing a box to/from the $i$th column if possible. It is well known that the $u_i$ alone satisfy the relations of the (local) plactic monoid, and the present authors recently showed that relations of degree at most 4 suffice to describe all relations between the up-operators. Here we characterize the algebra generated by the up- and down-operators together, showing that it can be presented using only quadratic relations.

Primitive Elements of the Hopf Algebras of Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations: among other things, they introduce a new basis, by Moebius inversion in the poset of weak order, that allows them to describe the primitive elements of the Hopf algebra of permutations. In the present note, by a similar method, we determine the primitive elements of the Poirier-Reutenauer algebra of tableaux, using a partial order on tableaux defined by Taskin.

C-trees and a coherent presentation for the plactic monoid of type C
In this article we introduce the $\mathbb{N}-$decorated plactic monoid of type $C$, denoted $Pl^\mathbb{N}(C_n)$, via a finite convergent presentation $ACol$, with generating set $ACol(C_n)$ consisting of admissible columns, and an element $ε$. By Squier's coherent completion theorem, this presentation is extended into a coherent presentation by identifying a family of generating confluences, i.e. generating $3-$cells. Here the generating $3-$cells are critical branchings on words of length $3$. We adapt the notions of crystal structure to $ACol(C_n)^\ast$ , and show that the shape of $3-$cells is preserved by the action of Kashiwara operators. Thus we reduce the study of the coherent presentation to only describing the generating $3-$cells whose source is a word of highest weight. We then introduce combinatorial objects called $C-$trees which parameterize the words of highest weight in $ACol(C_n)^\ast$. The $C-$trees allow for simplifying calculations with the insertion algorithm in type $C$, as introduced in by Lecouvey, and we prove that the generating $3-$cells in $ACol$ are of shape at most $(4,3)$. As a consequence, we show that the column presentation of $Pl(C_n)$, as introduced by Hage, has generating $3-$cells of shape at most $(4,3)$. This contrasts the situation in type $A$, where the $3-$cells in the column presentation of $Pl(A_n)$ are of shape at most $(3,3)$.

Tropical representations and identities of plactic monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a faithful representation of the plactic monoid of every finite rank as a monoid of upper triangular matrices over the tropical semiring. This answers a question first posed by Izhakian and subsequently studied by several authors. A consequence is a proof of a conjecture of Kubat and Okniński that every plactic monoid of finite rank satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity. In the converse direction, we show that every identity satisfied by the plactic monoid of rank $n$ is satisfied by the monoid of $n \times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices. In particular this implies that the variety generated by the $3 \times 3$ upper triangular tropical matrices coincides with that generated by the plactic monoid of rank $3$, answering another question of Izhakian.

A Timed Version of the Plactic Monoid
Timed words are words where letters of the alphabet come with time stamps. We extend the definitions of semistandard tableaux, insertion, Knuth equivalence, and the plactic monoid to the setting of timed words. Using this, Greene's theorem is formulated and proved for timed words, and algorithms for the RSK correspondence are extended to real matrices.

Geometry and algorithms for upper triangular tropical matrix identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide geometric methods and algorithms to verify, construct and enumerate pairs of words (of specified length over a fixed $m$-letter alphabet) that form identities in the semigroup $\ut{n}$ of $n\times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices. In the case $n=2$ these identities are precisely those satisfied by the bicyclic monoid, whilst in the case $n=3$ they form a subset of the identities which hold in the plactic monoid of rank $3$. To each word we associate a signature sequence of lattice polytopes, and show that two words form an identity for $\ut{n}$ if and only if their signatures are equal. Our algorithms are thus based on polyhedral computations and achieve optimal complexity in some cases. For $n=m=2$ we prove a Structural Theorem, which allows us to quickly enumerate the pairs of words of fixed length which form identities for $\ut{2}$. This allows us to recover a short proof of Adjan's theorem on minimal length identities for the bicyclic monoid, and to construct minimal length identities for $\ut{3}$, providing counterexamples to a conjecture of Izhakian in this case. We conclude with six conjectures at the intersection of semigroup theory, probability and combinatorics, obtained through analysing the outputs of our algorithms.
