Colorful combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.

Combinatorics of cyclic shifts in plactic, hypoplactic, sylvester, Baxter, and related monoids
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. This paper examines the cyclic shift graphs of `plactic-like' monoids, whose elements can be viewed as combinatorial objects of some type: aside from the plactic monoid itself (the monoid of Young tableaux), examples include the hypoplactic monoid (quasi-ribbon tableaux), the sylvester monoid (binary search trees), the stalactic monoid (stalactic tableaux), the taiga monoid (binary search trees with multiplicities), and the Baxter monoid (pairs of twin binary search trees). It was already known that for many of these monoids, connected components of the cyclic shift graph consist of elements that have the same evaluation (that is, contain the same number of each generating symbol). This paper focusses on the maximum diameter of a connected component of the cyclic shift graph of these monoids in the rank-$n$ case. For the hypoplactic monoid, this is $n-1$; for the sylvester and taiga monoids, at least $n-1$ and at most $n$; for the stalactic monoid, $3$ (except for ranks $1$ and $2$, when it is respectively $0$ and $1$); for the plactic monoid, at least $n-1$ and at most $2n-3$. The current state of knowledge, including new and previously-known results, is summarized in a table.
A note on identities in plactic monoids and monoids of upper-triangular tropical matrices
This paper uses the combinatorics of Young tableaux to prove the plactic monoid of infinite rank does not satisfy a non-trivial identity, by showing that the plactic monoid of rank $n$ cannot satisfy a non-trivial identity of length less than or equal to $n$. A new identity is then proven to hold for the monoid of $n \times n$ upper-triangular tropical matrices. Finally, a straightforward embedding is exhibited of the plactic monoid of rank $3$ into the direct product of two copies of the monoid of $3\times 3$ upper-triangular tropical matrices, giving a new proof that the plactic monoid of rank $3$ satisfies a non-trivial identity.

Crystals and trees: quasi-Kashiwara operators, monoids of binary trees, and Robinson--Schensted-type correspondences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kashiwara's crystal graphs have a natural monoid structure that arises by identifying words labelling vertices that appear in the same position of isomorphic components. The celebrated plactic monoid (the monoid of Young tableaux), arises in this way from the crystal graph for the $q$-analogue of the general linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{n}$, and the so-called Kashiwara operators interact beautifully with the combinatorics of Young tableaux and with the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence. The authors previously constructed an analogous `quasi-crystal' structure for the related hypoplactic monoid (the monoid of quasi-ribbon tableaux), which has similarly neat combinatorial properties. This paper constructs an analogous `crystal-type' structure for the sylvester and Baxter monoids (the monoids of binary search trees and pairs of twin binary search trees, respectively). Both monoids are shown to arise from this structure just as the plactic monoid does from the usual crystal graph. The interaction of the structure with the sylvester and Baxter versions of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence is studied. The structure is then applied to prove results on the number of factorizations of elements of these monoids, and to prove that both monoids satisfy non-trivial identities.

Tropical plactic algebra, the cloaktic monoid, and semigroup representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new tropical plactic algebra is introduced in which the Knuth relations are inferred from the underlying semiring arithmetics, encapsulating the ubiquitous plactic monoid $\mathcal{P}_n$. This algebra manifests a natural framework for accommodating representations of $\mathcal{P}_n$, or equivalently of Young tableaux, and its moderate coarsening -- the cloaktic monoid $\mathcal{K}_n$ and the co-cloaktic $ ^{\operatorname{co}}\mathcal{K}_n$. The faithful linear representations of $\mathcal{K}_n$ and $\, ^{\operatorname{co}} \mathcal{K}_n$ by tropical matrices, which constitute a tropical plactic algebra, are shown to provide linear representations of the plactic monoid. To this end the paper develops a special type of configuration tableaux, corresponding bijectively to semi-standard Young tableaux. These special tableaux allow a systematic encoding of combinatorial properties in numerical algebraic ways, including algorithmic benefits. The interplay between these algebraic-combinatorial structures establishes a profound machinery for exploring semigroup attributes, in particular satisfying of semigroup identities. This machinery is utilized here to prove that $\mathcal{K}_n$ and $\, ^{\operatorname{co}} \mathcal{K}_n$ admit all the semigroup identities satisfied by $n \times n$ triangular tropical matrices, which holds also for $\mathcal{P}_3$.

Plactic monoids: a braided approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young tableaux carry an associative product, described by the Schensted algorithm. They thus form a monoid $\mathbf{Pl}$, called \emph{plactic}. It is central in numerous combinatorial and algebraic applications. In this paper, the tableaux product is shown to be completely determined by a braiding $σ$ on the (much simpler!) set of columns $\mathbf{Col}$. Here a \emph{braiding} is a set-theoretic solution to the Yang--Baxter equation. As an application, we identify the Hochschild cohomology of $\mathbf{Pl}$, which resists classical approaches, with the more accessible braided cohomology of $(\mathbf{Col},σ)$. The cohomological dimension of $\mathbf{Pl}$ is obtained as a corollary. Also, the braiding~$σ$ is proved to commute with the classical crystal reflection operators~$s\_i$.

Identities in plactic, hypoplactic, sylvester, Baxter, and related monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers whether non-trivial identities are satisfied by certain `plactic-like' monoids that, like the plactic monoid, are closely connected to combinatorics. New results show that the hypoplactic, sylvester, Baxter, stalactic, and taiga monoids satisfy identities, and indeed give shortest identities satisfied by these monoids. The existing state of knowledge is discussed for the plactic monoid and left and right patience sorting monoids.

Combinatorics of cyclic shifts in plactic, hypoplactic, sylvester, and related monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. For certain monoids connected with combinatorics, such as the plactic monoid (the monoid of Young tableaux) and the sylvester monoid (the monoid of binary search trees), connected components consist of elements that have the same evaluation (that is, contain the same number of each generating symbol). This paper discusses new results on the diameters of connected components of the cyclic shift graphs of the finite-rank analogues of these monoids, showing that the maximum diameter of a connected component is dependent only on the rank. The proof techniques are explained in the case of the sylvester monoid.

Knuth's Coherent Presentations of Plactic Monoids of Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct finite coherent presentations of plactic monoids of type A. Such coherent presentations express a system of generators and relations for the monoid extended in a coherent way to give a family of generators of the relations amongst the relations. Such extended presentations are used for representations of monoids, in particular, it is a way to describe actions of monoids on categories. Moreover, a coherent presentation provides the first step in the computation of a categorical cofibrant replacement of a monoid. Our construction is based on a rewriting method introduced by Squier that computes a coherent presentation from a convergent one. We compute a finite coherent presentation of a plactic monoid from its column presentation that is known to be finite and convergent. Finally, we show how to reduce this coherent presentation to a Tietze equivalent one having Knuth's generators.

Shifted Domino tableaux
We introduce new combinatorial objects called the shifted domino tableaux. We prove that these objects are in bijection with pairs of shifted Young tableaux. This bijection shows that shifted domino tableaux can be seen as elements of the super shifted plactic monoid, which is the shifted analog of the super plactic monoid. We also show that the sum over all shifted domino tableaux of a fixed shape describe a product of two Q-Schur functions, and by taking a different kind of shifted domino tableaux we describe a product of two P-Schur functions.

Crystallizing the hypoplactic monoid: from quasi-Kashiwara operators to the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth-type correspondence for quasi-ribbon tableaux

Crystal graphs, in the sense of Kashiwara, carry a natural monoid structure given by identifying words labelling vertices that appear in the same position of isomorphic components of the crystal. In the particular case of the crystal graph for the $q$-analogue of the special linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n}$, this monoid is the celebrated plactic monoid, whose elements can be identified with Young tableaux. The crystal graph and the so-called Kashiwara operators interact beautifully with the combinatorics of Young tableaux and with the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence and so provide powerful combinatorial tools to work with them. This paper constructs an analogous `quasi-crystal' structure for the hypoplactic monoid, whose elements can be identified with quasi-ribbon tableaux and whose connection with the theory of quasi-symmetric functions echoes the connection of the plactic monoid with the theory of symmetric functions. This quasi-crystal structure and the associated quasi-Kashiwara operators are shown to interact just as neatly with the combinatorics of quasi-ribbon tableaux and with the hypoplactic version of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence. A study is then made of the interaction of the crystal graph of the plactic monoid and the quasi-crystal graph for the hypoplactic monoid. Finally, the quasi-crystal structure is applied to prove some new results about the hypoplactic monoid.

The symplectic plactic monoid, crystals, and MV cycles
Published in Pacific J. Math. 286 (2017) 439-497 • View PublicationBIB
We study cells in generalised Bott-Samelson varieties for type C. These cells are parametrised by certain galleries in the affine building. We define a set of readable galleries - we show that the closure in the affine Grassmannian associated to a gallery in this set is an MV cycle. This then defines a map from the set of readable galeries to the set of MV cycles, which we show to be a morphism of crystals. We further compute the fibres of this map in terms of the Littelmann path model.

Algebraic and combinatorial structures on pairs of twin binary trees
Published in Journal of Algebra, 360, 115--157, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new construction of a Hopf algebra defined first by Reading whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e., Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). Our construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like correspondence and insertion algorithm. Indeed, the Baxter monoid leads to the definition of a lattice structure over pairs of twin binary trees and the definition of a Hopf algebra. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied and among other, multiplicative bases are provided, and freeness and self-duality proved.

We give a new construction of a Hopf subalgebra of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e. Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). This construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like insertion algorithm. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied. This Hopf algebra appeared for the first time in the work of Reading [Lattice congruences, fans and Hopf algebras, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 110:237--273, 2005].

Super RSK-algorithms and super plactic monoid

We construct the analogue of the plactic monoid for the super semistandard Young tableaux over a signed alphabet. This is done by developing a generalization of the Knuth's relations. Moreover we get generalizations of Greene's invariants and Young-Pieri rule. A generalization of the symmetry theorem in the signed case is also obtained. Except for this last result, all the other results are proved without restrictions on the orderings of the alphabets.

The shifted plactic monoid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a shifted analog of the plactic monoid of Lascoux and Schützenberger, the \emph{shifted plactic monoid}. It can be defined in two different ways: via the \emph{shifted Knuth relations}, or using Haiman's mixed insertion. Applications include: a new combinatorial derivation (and a new version of) the shifted Littlewood-Richardson Rule; similar results for the coefficients in the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function; a shifted counterpart of the Lascoux-Schützenberger theory of noncommutative Schur functions in plactic variables; a characterization of shifted tableau words; and more.

The Algebra of Binary Search Trees
Published in Theoret. Computer Sci., 339 (2005), 129-165 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a monoid structure on the set of binary search trees, by a process very similar to the construction of the plactic monoid, the Robinson-Schensted insertion being replaced by the binary search tree insertion. This leads to a new construction of the algebra of Planar Binary Trees of Loday-Ronco, defining it in the same way as Non-Commutative Symmetric Functions and Free Symmetric Functions. We briefly explain how the main known properties of the Loday-Ronco algebra can be described and proved with this combinatorial point of view, and then discuss it from a representation theoretical point of view, which in turns leads to new combinatorial properties of binary trees.

Schensted type correspondence for type $G_{2}$ and computation of the canonical basis of a finite dimensional $U_{q}(G_{2})$-module
We use Kang-Misra's combinatorial description of the crystal graphs for $U_{q}(G_{2})$ to introduce the plactic monoid for type $G_{2}$. Then we describe the corresponding insertion algorithm which yields a Schensted type correspondence. Next we give a simple algorithm for computing the canonical basis of any finite dimensional $U_{q}(G_{2})$-module.

Schensted-type correspondences and plactic monoids for types $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$

We use Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases to study plactic monoids for $U_{q}(so_{2n+1})$ and $U_{q}(so_{2n})$. Simultaneously we describe a Schensted type correspondence in the crystal graphs of tensor powers of vector and spin representations and we derive a Jeu de Taquin for type $B$ from the Sheats sliding algorithm.
