New cases of the Strong Stanley Conjecture
We make progress towards understanding the structure of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $g_{λ,μ}^ν$ for products of Jack symmetric functions. Building on recent results of the second author, we are able to prove new cases of a conjecture of Stanley in which certain families of these coefficients can be expressed as a product of upper or lower hook lengths for every box in each of the partitions. In particular, we prove that conjecture in the case of a rectangular union, i.e. for $g_{μ,\bar σ}^{μ\cup m^n}$ where $\bar σ$ is the complementary partition of $σ= μ\cap m^n$ in the rectangular partition $m^n$. We give a formula for these coefficients through an explicit prescription of such choices of hooks. Lastly, we conjecture an analogue of this conjecture of Stanley holds in the case of Shifted Jack functions.

Log-concavity with respect to the number of orbits for infinite tuples of commuting permutations
Let $A(p,n,k)$ be the number of $p$-tuples of commuting permutations of $n$ elements whose permutation action results in exactly $k$ orbits or connected components. We formulate the conjecture that, for every fixed $p$ and $n$, the $A(p,n,k)$ form a log-concave sequence with respect to $k$. For $p=1$ this is a well known property of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind. As the $p=2$ case, our conjecture includes a previous one by Heim and Neuhauser, which strengthens a unimodality conjecture for the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length polynomials. In this article, we prove the $p=\infty$ case of our conjecture. We start from an expression for the $A(p,n,k)$ which follows from an identity by Bryan and Fulman, obtained in the their study of orbifold higher equivariant Euler characteristics. We then derive the $p\rightarrow\infty$ asymptotics. The last step essentially amounts to the log-concavity in $k$ of a generalized Turán number, namely, the maximum product of $k$ positive integers whose sum is $n$.

Asymptotics of Some Plancherel Averages via Polynomiality Results
Published in La Matematica 2 (2023), 668-691 • View PublicationBIB
Consider Young diagrams of $n$ boxes distributed according to the Plancherel measure. So those diagrams could be the output of the RSK algorithm, when applied to random permutations of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Here we are interested in asymptotics, as $n\to \infty$, of expectations of certain functions of random Young diagrams, such as the number of bumping steps of the RSK algorithm that leads to that diagram, the side length of its Durfee square, or the logarithm of its probability. We can express these functions in terms of hook lengths or contents of the boxes of the diagram, which opens the door for application of known polynomiality results for Plancherel averages. We thus obtain representations of expectations as binomial convolutions, that can be further analyzed with the help of Rice's integral or Poisson generating functions. Among our results is a very explicit expression for the constant appearing in the almost equipartition property of the Plancherel measure.

Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics
Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

Some combinatorial interpretations of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems and Nekrasov--Okounkov type formulas
We explore some connections between vectors of integers and integer partitions seen as bi-infinite words. This methodology enables us on the one hand to obtain enumerations connecting products of hook lengths and vectors of integers. This yields on the other hand a combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems of the $7$ infinite families in terms of Schur functions, symplectic and special orthogonal Schur functions. From these results, we are able to derive $q$-Nekrasov--Okounkov formulas associated to each type. The latter for limit cases of $q$ yield Nekrasov--Okounkov type formulas corresponding to all the specializations given by Macdonald.
Hook length biases and general linear partition inequalities
Motivated in part by hook-content formulas for certain restricted partitions in representation theory, we consider the total number of hooks of fixed length in odd versus distinct partitions. We show that there are more hooks of length $2$, respectively $3$, in all odd partitions of $n$ than in all distinct partitions of $n$, and make the analogous conjecture for arbitrary hook length $t \geq 2$. We also establish additional bias results on the number of gaps of size $1,$ respectively $2$, in all odd versus distinct partitions of $n$. We conjecture similar biases and asymptotics, as well as congruences for the number of hooks of fixed length in odd distinct partitions versus self-conjugate partitions. An integral component of the proof of our bias result for hooks of length $3$ is a linear inequality involving $q(n)$, the number of distinct partitions of $n$. In this article we also establish effective linear inequalities for $q(n)$ in great generality, a result which is of independent interest. Our methods are both analytic and combinatorial, and our results and conjectures intersect the areas of representation theory, analytic number theory, partition theory, and $q$-series. In particular, we use a Rademacher-type exact formula for $q(n),$ Wright's circle method, modularity, $q$-series transformations, asymptotic methods, and combinatorial arguments.

A unimodal sequence with mode at a quarter length
Published in Journal of Difference Equations and Applications, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the number $A(n,m)$ of partitions with $m$ even parts and largest hook length $n$ is strongly unimodal with mode [(n-1)/4] for $n\ge 6$. We establish this result by induction, using a $5$-term recurrence due to Lin, Xiong and Yan, and two $4$-term recurrences obtained by Zeilberger's algorithm. The sequence $A(n,m)$ is not log-concave. Using Möbius transformation and the method of interlacing zeros, we obtain that every zero of every generating function $\sum_m A(n,m)z^m$ lies on the left half part of the circle |z-1|=2. Moreover, as a direct application of Wang and Zhang's characterization of root geometry of polynomial sequences that satisfy a recurrence of type $(1,1)$, we see that all these zeros are densely distributed on the half circle.
Enumerating numerical sets associated to a numerical semigroup
Published • View PublicationBIB
A numerical set $T$ is a subset of $\mathbb N_0$ that contains $0$ and has finite complement. The atom monoid of $T$ is the set of $x \in \mathbb N_0$ such that $x+T \subseteq T$. Marzuola and Miller introduced the anti-atom problem: how many numerical sets have a given atom monoid? This is equivalent to asking for the number of integer partitions with a given set of hook lengths. We introduce the void poset of a numerical semigroup $S$ and show that numerical sets with atom monoid $S$ are in bijection with certain order ideals of this poset. We use this characterization to answer the anti-atom problem when $S$ has small type.
The maximum hook length of $d$-distinct simultaneous core partitions

We exactly determine the maximum possible hook length of $(s,t)$-core partitions with $d$-distinct parts when there are finitely many such partitions. Moreover, we provide an algorithm to construct a $d$-distinct $(s,t)$-core partition with this maximum possible hook length.

Distributions of Hook Lengths Divisible by Two or Three

For fixed $t = 2$ or $3$, we investigate the statistical properties of $\{Y_t(n)\}$, the sequence of random variables corresponding to the number of hook lengths divisible by $t$ among the partitions of $n$. We characterize the support of $Y_t(n)$ and show, in accordance with empirical observations, that the support is vanishingly small for large $n$. Moreover, we demonstrate that the nonzero values of the mass functions of $Y_2(n)$ and $Y_3(n)$ approximate continuous functions. Finally, we prove that although the mass functions fail to converge, the cumulative distribution functions of $\{Y_2(n)\}$ and $\{Y_3(n)\}$ converge pointwise to shifted Gamma distributions, completing a characterization initiated by Griffin--Ono--Tsai for $t \geq 4$.

Asymptotic Properties of Maximal $p$-Core $p'$-Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For primes $p$, we study the maximal possible size of a $p$-core $p'$-partition (a partition with no hook lengths or parts divisible by $p$). McDowell recently proved that the maximum is attained by a unique partition, say $Λ_p$. Using his graph theoretic description of $Λ_p$, we prove for $p > 10^6$ that \[\frac{1}{24}p^6 - p^5\sqrt{p} < |Λ_p| < \frac{1}{24}p^6 - \frac{1}{200}p^5\sqrt{p},\] which shows that $|Λ_p| \sim p^6/24$ as $p \to \infty$.

Large $p$-core $p'$-partitions and walks on the additive residue graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper investigates partitions which have neither parts nor hook lengths divisible by $p$, referred to as $p$-core $p'$-partitions. We show that the largest $p$-core $p'$-partition corresponds to the longest walk on a graph with vertices $\{0, 1, \ldots, p-1\}$ and labelled edges defined via addition modulo $p$. We also exhibit an explicit family of large $p$-core $p'$-partitions, giving a lower bound on the size of the largest such partition which is of the same degree as the upper bound found by McSpirit and Ono.
Hook length and symplectic content in partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type companions to this identity. In this context, we give the parity of the number of partitions into distinct parts with odd (respectively, even) rank. We study the connection between the sum of hook-lengths and the sum of inversions in the binary representation of a partition. In addition, we introduce a new partition statistic, the $x$-ray list of a partition, and explore its connection with distinct partitions as well as partitions maximally contained in a given staircase partition.

On Finite Analogs of Schmidt's Problem and Its Variants
We refine Schmidt's problem and a partition identity related to 2-color partitions which we will refer to as Uncu-Andrews-Paule theorem. We will approach the problem using Boulet-Stanley weights and a formula on Rogers-Szegő polynomials by Berkovich-Warnaar, and present various Schmidt's problem alike theorems and their refinements. Our new Schmidt type results include the use of even-indexed parts' sums, alternating sum of parts, and hook lengths as well as the odd-indexed parts' sum which appears in the original Schmidt's problem. We also translate some of our Schmidt's problem alike relations to weighted partition counts with multiplicative weights in relation to Rogers-Ramanujan partitions.

Hook formulae from Segre-MacPherson classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nakada's colored hook formula is a vast generalization of many important formulae in combinatorics, such as the classical hook length formula and the Peterson's formula for the number of reduced expressions of minuscule Weyl group elements. In this paper, we utilize cohomological properties of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells and varieties to prove a generalization of a cohomological version of Nakada's formula, in terms of smoothness properties of Schubert varieties. A key ingredient in the proof is the study of a decorated version of the Bruhat graph. Summing over weighted paths of this graph give the terms in the generalized Nakada's formula, and also provide algorithms to calculate structure constants of multiplications of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells. For simply laced Weyl groups, we also show the equality of `skew' and `straight' Nakada's formulae. This utilizes a criterion for smoothness in terms of excited diagrams of heaps of minuscule elements, which might be of independent interest.

Distributions of Hook lengths in integer partitions

Motivated by the many roles that hook lengths play in mathematics, we study the distribution of the number of $t$-hooks in the partitions of $n$. We prove that the limiting distribution is normal with mean $μ_t(n)\sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π-\frac{t}{2}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n)\sim \frac{(π^2-6)\sqrt{6n}}{2π^3}.$ Furthermore, we prove that the distribution of the number of hook lengths that are multiples of a fixed $t\geq 4$ in partitions of $n$ converge to a shifted Gamma distribution with parameter $k=(t-1)/2$ and scale $θ=\sqrt{2/(t-1)}.$

Self-conjugate $t$-core partitions and applications
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 82(2) (2022), 212--227 • Search Publication
Partition theory abounds with bijections between different types of partitions. One of the most famous partition bijections maps each self-conjugate partition of a positive integer $n$ to a partition of $n$ into distinct odd parts, and vice versa. Here we prove new necessary and sufficient conditions for a self-conjugate partition to be $t$-core, in terms of only the parts of the corresponding partition into distinct odd parts, by proving a new hook length formula. Corollaries of these results include new applications of $t$-core self-conjugate partitions to subsets of the natural numbers, due to the recent investigation of a new partition statistic called the supernorm by the first author, Just, and Schneider, as well as many results on $t$-cores by Bringmann, Kane, Males, Ono, Raji, and others. We provide several examples of these applications, one of which gives a new formula for certain families of Hurwitz class numbers.

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Hook formulas for skew shapes IV. Increasing tableaux and factorial Grothendieck polynomials

We present a new family of hook-length formulas for the number of standard increasing tableaux which arise in the study of factorial Grothendieck polynomials. In the case of straight shapes our formulas generalize the classical hook-length formula and Stanley's formula. For skew shapes, our formulas generalize the Naruse hook-length formula and its $q$-analogues, which were studied in previous papers of the series.

Multiplication theorems for self-conjugate partitions
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 2(2) (2022) #13, pp.32 • View PublicationBIB
In 2011, Han and Ji proved addition-multiplication theorems for integer partitions, from which they derived modular analogues of many classical identities involving hook-length. In the present paper, we prove addition-multiplication theorems for the subset of self-conjugate partitions. Although difficulties arise due to parity questions, we are almost always able to include the BG-rank introduced by Berkovich and Garvan. This gives us as consequences many self-conjugate modular versions of classical hook-lengths identities for partitions. Our tools are mainly based on fine properties of the Littlewood decomposition restricted to self-conjugate partitions.
