In this paper, we generalize Andrews' partitions separated by parity to overpartitions in two ways. We investigate the generating functions for 16 overpartition families whose parts are separated by parity, and we prove various $q$-series identities for these functions. These identities include relations to modular forms, $q$-hypergeometric series, and mock modular forms.
Ramanujan's partition generating functions modulo $\ell$
For the partition function $p(n)$, Ramanujan proved the striking identities $$
P_5(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(5n+4)q^n =5\prod_{n\geq 1} \frac{\left(q^5;q^5\right)_{\infty}^5}{(q;q)_{\infty}^6}, $$ $$
P_7(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(7n+5)q^n =7\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^3}{(q;q)_{\infty}^4}+49q
\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^7}{(q;q)_{\infty}^8}, $$ where $(q;q)_{\infty}:=\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n).$ As these identities imply his celebrated congruences modulo 5 and 7, it is natural to seek, for primes $\ell \geq 5,$ closed form expressions of the power series
$$
P_{\ell}(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(\ell n-δ_{\ell})q^n\pmod{\ell},
$$
where $δ_{\ell}:=\frac{\ell^2-1}{24}.$ In this paper, we prove that
$$
P_{\ell}(q)\equiv c_{\ell} \frac{T_{\ell}(q)}{ (q^\ell; q^\ell )_\infty} \pmod{\ell},
$$
where $c_{\ell}\in \mathbb{Z}$ is explicit and $T_{\ell}(q)$ is the generating function for the Hecke traces of $\ell$-ramified values of special Dirichlet series for weight $\ell-1$ cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11, as there are no nontrivial cusp forms of weight 4, 6, and 10.
Distribution of Alternating Sums of Parts in Partitions
Recently, many authors have investigated how various partition statistics distribute as the size of the partition grows. In this work, we look at a particular statistic arising from the recent rejuvenation of MacMahon's partition analysis. More specifically, we compute all the moments of the alternating sum statistic for partitions. We prove this results using the Circle Method. We also propose a general framework for studying further questions of this type that may avoid some of the complications that arise in traditional approaches to the distributions of partition statistics, and we comment on the utility, comparative ease and opportunities to generalize to very broad settings.
Precision Asymptotics for Partitions Featuring False-Indefinite Theta Functions
Andrews-Dyson-Hickerson, Cohen build a striking relation between q-hypergeometric series, real quadratic fields, and Maass forms. Thanks to the works of Lewis-Zagier and Zwegers we have a complete understanding on the part of these relations pertaining to Maass forms and false-indefinite theta functions. In particular, we can systematically distinguish and study the class of false-indefinite theta functions related to Maass forms. A crucial component here is the framework of mock Maass theta functions built by Zwegers in analogy with his earlier work on indefinite theta functions and their application to Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Given this understanding, a natural question is to what extent one can utilize modular properties to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the associated Fourier coefficients, especially in view of their relevance to combinatorial objects. In this paper, we develop the relevant methods to study such a question and show that quite detailed results can be obtained on the asymptotic development, which also enable Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher type exact formulas under the right conditions. We develop these techniques by concentrating on a concrete example involving partitions with parts separated by parity and derive an asymptotic expansion that includes all the exponentially growing terms.
Higher level $q$-multiple zeta values with applications to quasimodular forms and partitions
In recent years, the generalized sum-of-divisor functions of MacMahon have been unified into the algebraic framework of $q$-multiple zeta values. In particular, these results link partition theory, quasimodular forms, $q$-multiple zeta values, and quasi-shuffle algebras. In this paper, we complete this idea of unification for higher levels, demonstrating that any quasimodular form of weight $k \geq 2$ and level $N$ may be expressed in terms of the $q$-multiple zeta values of level $N$ studied algebraically by Yuan and Zhao. We also give results restricted to $q$-multiple zeta values with integer coefficients, and we construct completely additive generating sets for spaces of quasimodular forms and for quasimodular forms with integer coefficients. We also provide a variety of computational examples from number-theoretic perspectives that suggest many new applications of the algebraic structure of $q$-multiple zeta values to quasimodular forms and partitions.

We study the zero set of polynomials built from partition statistics, complementing earlier work in this direction by Boyer, Goh, Parry, and others. In particular, addressing a question of Males with two of the authors, we prove asymptotics for the values of $t$-hook polynomials away from an annulus and isolated zeros of a theta function. We also discuss some open problems and present data on other polynomial families, including those associated to deformations of Rogers-Ramanujan functions.
Distribution of hooks in self-conjugate partitions
We confirm the speculation that the distribution of $t$-hooks among unrestricted integer partitions essentially descends to self-conjugate partitions. Namely, we prove that the number of hooks of length $t$ among the size $n$ self-conjugate partitions is asymptotically normally distributed with mean
$μ_t(n) \sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π + \frac{3}{π^2} - \frac{t}{2}+\frac{δ_t}{4}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n) \sim \frac{(π^2 - 6) \sqrt{6n}}{π^3},$ where $δ_t:=1$ if $t$ is odd, and is 0 otherwise.
Integer partitions detect the primes
We show that integer partitions, the fundamental building blocks in additive number theory, detect prime numbers in an unexpected way. Answering a question of Schneider, we show that the primes are the solutions to special equations in partition functions. For example, an integer $n\geq 2$ is prime if and only if
$$
(3n^3 - 13n^2 + 18n - 8)M_1(n) + (12n^2 - 120n + 212)M_2(n) -960M_3(n) = 0,
$$
where the $M_a(n)$ are MacMahon's well-studied partition functions. More generally, for "MacMahonesque" partition functions $M_{\vec{a}}(n),$ we prove that there are infinitely many such prime detecting equations with constant coefficients, such as
$$
80M_{(1,1,1)}(n)-12M_{(2,0,1)}(n)+12M_{(2,1,0)}(n)+\dots-12M_{(1,3)}(n)-39M_{(3,1)}(n)=0.
$$
On the asymptotic behavior for partitions separated by parity
The study of partitions with parts separated by parity was initiated by Andrews in connection with Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and his variations on this theme have produced generating functions with a large variety of different modular properties. In this paper, we use Ingham's Tauberian theorem to compute the asymptotic main term for each of the eight functions studied by Andrews.
Limiting behaviour and modular completions of MacMahon-like q-series
Recently, MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor functions were shown to link partitions, quasimodular forms, and q-multiple zeta values. In this paper, we explore many further properties and extensions of these. Firstly, we address a question of Ono by producing infinite families of MacMahon-like functions that approximate the colored partition functions (and indeed other eta quotients). We further explore the MacMahon-like functions and discover new and suggestive arithmetic structure and modular completions.
Inequalities and asymptotics for hook numbers in restricted partitions
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic properties of hook numbers of partitions in restricted classes. More specifically, we compare the frequency with which partitions into odd parts and partitions into distinct parts have hook numbers equal to $h \geq 1$ by deriving an asymptotic formula for the total number of hooks equal to $h$ that appear among partitions into odd and distinct parts, respectively. We use these asymptotic formulas to prove a recent conjecture of the first author and collaborators that for $h \geq 2$ and $n \gg 0$, partitions into odd parts have, on average, more hooks equal to $h$ than do partitions into distinct parts. We also use our asymptotics to prove certain probabilistic statements about how hooks distribute in the rows of partitions.
Asymptotics for $d$-fold partition diamonds and related infinite products
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $d$-fold partition diamonds of $n$ and their Schmidt-type counterparts. In order to do so, we study the asymptotic behavior of certain infinite products. We also remark on interesting potential connections with mathematical physics and Bloch groups.
On the distribution of the norm of partitions
The norm of an integer partition is defined as the product of its parts. This statistic was recently introduced by Schneider in connection to partition zeta functions. In this note, we use the method of moments to study the distribution of the norm under the uniform probability measure on partitions of $n$ as $n \to \infty$. We use singularity analysis to prove asymptotics for the moments and show as a result that the norm lacks a non-trivial limiting distribution on $[0,\infty)$.
Hook length biases and general linear partition inequalities
Motivated in part by hook-content formulas for certain restricted partitions in representation theory, we consider the total number of hooks of fixed length in odd versus distinct partitions. We show that there are more hooks of length $2$, respectively $3$, in all odd partitions of $n$ than in all distinct partitions of $n$, and make the analogous conjecture for arbitrary hook length $t \geq 2$. We also establish additional bias results on the number of gaps of size $1,$ respectively $2$, in all odd versus distinct partitions of $n$. We conjecture similar biases and asymptotics, as well as congruences for the number of hooks of fixed length in odd distinct partitions versus self-conjugate partitions.
An integral component of the proof of our bias result for hooks of length $3$ is a linear inequality involving $q(n)$, the number of distinct partitions of $n$. In this article we also establish effective linear inequalities for $q(n)$ in great generality, a result which is of independent interest.
Our methods are both analytic and combinatorial, and our results and conjectures intersect the areas of representation theory, analytic number theory, partition theory, and $q$-series. In particular, we use a Rademacher-type exact formula for $q(n),$ Wright's circle method, modularity, $q$-series transformations, asymptotic methods, and combinatorial arguments.
On the coefficients of $q$-series and modular forms
In this Ph.D dissertation (University of Virginia, 2022), we prove results about the coefficients of partition-theoretic generating functions and of coefficients of integer weight modular forms. Using various forms of the circle method, we prove results about the distribution of partition statistics in residue classes modulo $t$. For example, we prove that the parts of partitions into distinct parts are equidistributed modulo $t$ (but that certain biases occur nonetheless) and that the number of $t$-hooks in a partition is generally not equidistributed modulo primes. We also obtain exact formulas for the $t$-hook counting functions using modular transformation laws. We also employ the circle method to prove a conjecture of Coll, Mayers and Mayers that the $q$-series $(q, -q^3; q^4)_\infty^{-1}$ has non-negative coefficients. These topics cover Chapters 3-6. Chapter 7 gives an application of partition asymptotics for proving hyperbolicity of Jensen polynomials using the criterion of Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier. Chapter 8 gives a new method for solving equations of the form $a_f(n) = α$, where $α\in \mathbb{Z}$ is odd and $a_f(n)$ are the coefficients of a normalized Hecke eigenform with trivial mod 2 Galois representation. The method is based on the primitive prime divisor theorem of Bilu, Hanrot, and Voutier along with methods in effective algebraic geometry for elliptic curves, hyperelliptic curves, and Thue equations.

In 2018 Coll, Mayers, and Mayers conjectured that the $q$-series $( q, -q^3; q^4 )_\infty^{-1}$ is the generating function for a certain parity statistic related to the index of seaweed algebras. We prove this conjecture. Thanks to earlier work by Seo and Yee, the conjecture would follow from the non-negativity of the coefficients of this infinite product. Using a variant of the circle method along with Euler-Maclaurin summation, we establish this non-negativity, thereby confirming the Coll-Mayers-Mayers Conjecture.

The study of Ramanujan-type congruences for functions specific to additive number theory has a long and rich history. Motivated by recent connections between divisor sums and overpartitions via congruences in arithmetic progressions, we investigate the existence and classification of Ramanujan-type congruences for functions in multiplicative number theory.

Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Partitions, the partition function $p(n)$, and the hook lengths of their Ferrers-Young diagrams are important objects in combinatorics, number theory and representation theory. For positive integers $n$ and $t$, we study $p_t^e(n)$ (resp. $p_t^o(n)$), the number of partitions of $n$ with an even (resp. odd) number of $t$-hooks. We study the limiting behavior of the ratio $p_t^e(n)/p(n)$, which also gives $p_t^o(n)/p(n)$ since $p_t^e(n) + p_t^0(n) = p(n)$. For even $t$, we show that $$\lim\limits_{n \to \infty} \dfrac{p_t^e(n)}{p(n)} = \dfrac{1}{2},$$ and for odd $t$ we establish the non-uniform distribution $$\lim\limits_{n \to \infty} \dfrac{p^e_t(n)}{p(n)} = \begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{2} + \dfrac{1}{2^{(t+1)/2}} & \text{if } 2 \mid n, \\ \\ \dfrac{1}{2} - \dfrac{1}{2^{(t+1)/2}} & \text{otherwise.} \end{cases}$$ Using the Rademacher circle method, we find an exact formula for $p_t^e(n)$ and $p_t^o(n)$, and this exact formula yields these distribution properties for large $n$. We also show that for sufficiently large $n$, the signs of $p_t^e(n) - p_t^o(n)$ are periodic.

Nicolas and DeSalvo and Pak proved that the partition function $p(n)$ is log concave for $n \geq 25$. Chen, Jia and Wang proved that $p(n)$ satisfies the third order Turán inequality, and that the associated degree 3 Jensen polynomials are hyperbolic for $n \geq 94$. More recently, Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier proved more generally that for all $d$, the degree $d$ Jensen polynomials associated to $p(n)$ are hyperbolic for sufficiently large $n$. In this paper, we prove that the same result holds for the $k$-regular partition function $p_k(n)$ for $k \geq 2$. In particular, for any positive integers $d$ and $k$, the order $d$ Turán inequalities hold for $p_k(n)$ for sufficiently large $n$. The case when $d = k = 2$ proves a conjecture by Neil Sloane that $p_2(n)$ is log concave.
