Blocking Ideals: a method for filtering linear extensions of a finite poset
The standard notion of poset probability of a finite poset P involves calculating, for incomparable $α$, $β$ in P, the number of linear extensions of P for which $α$ precedes $β$. The fraction of those linear extensions among all linear extensions of P is the probability that $α< β$. The question of whether there is always a pair $α, β$ such that this probability lies between 1/3 and 2/3, in any poset P (that is not a chain) is the famous "1/3-2/3-conjecture". A general way of counting linear extensions of P for which $α$ precedes $β$ is to count linear extensions of the poset obtained by adding the relation $(α,β)$, and its transitive consequences. For chain-products, and more generally for partition posets, lattice-path methods can be used to count the number of those linear extensions. We present an alternative approach to find the pertinent linear extensions. It relies on finding the "blocking ideals" in $J(P)$, where $J(P)$ is the lattice of order ideals in P. This method works for all finite posets. We illustrate this method by using blocking ideals to find explicit formulas of poset probabilities in cell posets $P_λ$ of two-row partitions. Well-known formulae such as the hook-length formula for $f^λ$, the number of standard Young tableaux on a partition $λ$, and the corresponding determinental formula by Jacobi-Trudi-Aitken for $f^{λ/ μ}$, the number of standard Young tableaux on a skew partition $λ/ μ$, are used along the way. We also calculate the limit probabilities when the elements $α,β$ are fixed cells, but the arm-lengths tend to infinity.

On hook length biases in $t$-regular partitions
Let $t\geq2$ and $k\geq1$ be integers. A $t$-regular partition of a positive integer $n$ is a partition of $n$ such that none of its parts is divisible by $t$. Let $b_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Recently, the first and the third authors proved that $b_{3,2}(n)\geq b_{2,2}(n)$ for all $n\geq 4$, and conjectured that $b_{t+1,2}(n)\geq b_{t,2}(n)$ for all $t\geq 3$ and $n\geq 0$. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture is true for $t=3$.

Hook length inequalities for $t$-regular partitions in the $t$-aspect
Let $t\geq2$ and $k\geq1$ be integers. A $t$-regular partition of a positive integer $n$ is a partition of $n$ such that none of its parts is divisible by $t$. Let $b_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. In this article, we prove some inequalities for $b_{t,k}(n)$ for fixed values of $k$. We prove that for any $t\geq2$, $b_{t+1,1}(n)\geq b_{t,1}(n)$, for all $n\geq0$. We also prove that $b_{3,2}(n)\geq b_{2,2}(n)$ for all $n>3$, and $b_{3,3}(n)\geq b_{2,3}(n)$ for all $n\geq0$. Finally, we state some problems for future works.

Hook-length Formulas for Skew Shapes via Contour Integrals and Vertex Models
The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape $λ/μ$ can be computed as a sum over excited diagrams inside $λ$. Excited diagrams are in bijection with certain lozenge tilings, with flagged semistandard tableaux and also nonintersecting lattice paths inside $λ$. We give two new proofs of a multivariate generalization of this formula, which allow us to extend the setup beyond standard Young tableaux and the underlying Schur symmetric polynomials. The first proof uses multiple contour integrals. The second one interprets excited diagrams as configurations of a six-vertex model at a free fermion point, and derives the formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape from the Yang-Baxter equation.
Generalised hook lengths and Schur elements for Hecke algebras
We compare two generalisations of the notion of hook lengths for partitions. We apply this in the context of the modular representation theory of Ariki-Koike algebras. We show that the Schur element of a simple module is divisible by the Schur element of the associated (generalised) core. In the case of Hecke algebras of type $A$, we obtain an even stronger result: the Schur element of a simple module is equal to the product of the Schur element of its core and the Schur element of its quotient.

Hook length biases for self-conjugate partitions and partitions with distinct odd parts
We establish a hook length bias between self-conjugate partitions and partitions of distinct odd parts, demonstrating that there are more hooks of fixed length $t \geq 2$ among self-conjugate partitions of $n$ than among partitions of distinct odd parts of $n$ for sufficiently large $n$. More precisely, we derive asymptotic formulas for the total number of hooks of fixed length $t$ in both classes. This resolves a conjecture of Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom, and Wen.

Fixed hooks in arbitrary columns
In a paper by the author, Hemmer, Hopkins, and Keith the concept of a fixed point in a sequence was applied to the sequence of first column hook lengths of a partition. In this paper we generalize this notion to fixed hook lengths in an arbitrary column of a partition. We establish combinatorial connections between these fixed hooks and colored partitions that have interesting gap and mex-like conditions. Additionally, we obtain several generating functions for hook lengths of a given fixedness by hook length or part size in unrestricted partitions as well as some classical restrictions such as odd and distinct partitions.

Asymptotics for $t$-Core Partitions and Stanton's Conjecture
A partition is a $t$-core partition if $t$ is not one of its hook lengths. Let $c_t(N)$ be the number of $t$-core partitions of $N$. In 1999, Stanton conjectured $c_t(N) \le c_{t+1}(N)$ if $4 \le t \ne N-1$. This was proved for $t$ fixed and $N$ sufficiently large by Anderson, and for small values of $t$ by Kim and Rouse. In this paper, we prove Stanton's conjecture in general. Our approach is to find a saddle point asymptotic formula for $c_t(N)$, valid in all ranges of $t$ and $N$. This includes the known asymptotic formulas for $c_t(N)$ as special cases, and shows that the behavior of $c_t(N)$ depends on how $t^2$ compares in size to $N$. For example, our formula implies that if $t^2 = κN + o(t)$, then $c_t(N) = \frac{\exp\left(2π\sqrt{A N}\right)}{B N} (1 + o(1))$ for suitable constants $A$ and $B$ defined in terms of $κ$.

Quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions and peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explore the relationship between quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions and peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We introduce a bijection on $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ such that $\{\mathrm{w}_{\rm c}(T) \mid T \in \mathsf{SPIT}(α)\}$ and $\{\mathrm{w}_{\rm r}(T) \mid T \in \mathsf{SPIT}(α)\}$ share identical descent distributions. Here, $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ is the set of standard peak immaculate tableaux of shape $α$, and $\mathrm{w}_{\rm c}$ and $\mathrm{w}_{\rm r}$ denote column reading and row reading, respectively. By combining this equidistribution with the algorithm developed by Allen, Hallam, and Mason, we demonstrate that the transition matrix from the basis of quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions to the basis of peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions is upper triangular, with entries being non-negative integers. Furthermore, we provide explicit descriptions of the expansion of peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions in specific cases, in terms of quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions. We also investigate the combinatorial properties of standard peak immaculate tableaux, standard Young composition tableaux, and standard peak Young composition tableaux. We provide a hook length formula for $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ and show that standard Young composition tableaux and standard peak Young composition tableaux can be bijectively mapped to specific words in a familiar form. Especially, cases of compositions with rectangular shape are examined in detail.

Macdonald Identities, Weyl-Kac Denominator Formulas and Affine Grassmannian Elements
Published in SIGMA 21 (2025), 023, 45 pages • View PublicationBIB
The Nekrasov-Okounkov formula gives an expression for the Fourier coefficients of the Euler functions as a sum of hook length products. This formula can be deduced from a specialization in a renormalization of the affine type $A$ Weyl denominator formula and the use of a polynomial argument. In this paper, we rephrase the renormalized Weyl-Kac denominator formula as a sum parametrized by affine Grassmannian elements. This naturally gives rise to the (dual) atomic length of the root system considered introduced by Chapelier-Laget and Gerber. We then provide an interpretation of this atomic length as the cardinality of some subsets of $n$-core partitions by using foldings of affine Dynkin diagrams. This interpretation does not permit the direct use of a polynomial argument for all affine root systems. We show that this obstruction can be overcome by computing the atomic length of certain families of integer partitions. Then we show how hook-length statistics on these partitions are connected with the Coxeter length on affine Grassmannian elements and Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas.

Hook length biases in ordinary and $t$-regular partitions
In this article, we study hook lengths of ordinary partitions and $t$-regular partitions. We establish hook length biases for the ordinary partitions and motivated by them we find a few interesting hook length biases in $2$-regular partitions. For a positive integer $k$, let $p_{(k)}(n)$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all the partitions of $n$. We prove that $p_{(k)}(n)\geq p_{(k+1)}(n)$ for all $n\geq0$ and $n\ne k+1$; and $p_{(k)}(k+1)- p_{(k+1)}(k+1)=-1$ for $k\geq 2$. For integers $t\geq2$ and $k\geq1$, let $b_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. We find generating functions of $b_{t,k}(n)$ for certain values of $t$ and $k$. Exploring hook length biases for $b_{t,k}(n)$, we observe that in certain cases biases are opposite to the biases for ordinary partitions. We prove that $b_{2,2}(n)\geq b_{2,1}(n)$ for all $n>4$, whereas $b_{2,2}(n)\geq b_{2,3}(n)$ for all $n\geq 0$. We also propose some conjectures on biases among $b_{t,k}(n)$.
The immersion poset on partitions
Published in J. Alg. Combinatorics 61, 21 (2025) 61, 21 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the immersion poset $(\mathcal{P}(n), \leqslant_I)$ on partitions, defined by $λ\leqslant_I μ$ if and only if $s_μ(x_1, \ldots, x_N) - s_λ(x_1, \ldots, x_N)$ is monomial-positive. Relations in the immersion poset determine when irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_N(\mathbb{C})$ form an immersion pair, as defined by Prasad and Raghunathan (2022). We develop injections $\mathsf{SSYT}(λ, ν) \hookrightarrow \mathsf{SSYT}(μ, ν)$ on semistandard Young tableaux given constraints on the shape of $λ$, and present results on immersion relations among hook and two column partitions. The standard immersion poset $(\mathcal{P}(n), \leqslant_{std})$ is a refinement of the immersion poset, defined by $λ\leqslant_{std} μ$ if and only if $λ\leqslant_D μ$ in dominance order and $f^λ\leqslant f^μ$, where $f^ν$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $ν$. We classify maximal elements of certain shapes in the standard immersion poset using the hook length formula. Finally, we prove Schur-positivity of power sum symmetric functions $p_{A_μ}$ on conjectured lower intervals in the immersion poset, addressing questions posed by Sundaram (2018).

Hook-Lengths, Symplectic/Orthogonal Contents and Amdeberhan's Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symplectic/orthogonal contents of partitions are related to the dimensions of irreducible representations of symplectic/orthogonal groups. In 2012, motivated by Nekrasov--Okounkov's hook-length formula and Stanley's hook-content formula, Amdeberhan proposed several conjectures about infinite product formulas for certain generating functions of hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. Some special cases of his conjectures were recently proved by Amdeberhan, Andrews and Ballantine. In this paper, we prove the general cases of Amdeberhan's conjectures.

Sum of squares of hook lengths and contents
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 92(1) (2025), pp. 70-79 • Search Publication
It is known that for the Young diagram of any partition of an integer $n$, the sum of squares of the hook lengths of its cells is exactly $n^2$ more than that of the contents of its cells. That is, for any partition $λ$ of an integer $n$, \begin{equation*} \sum_{u \in λ} h(u)^2 = n^2 + \sum_{u \in λ} c(u)^2. \end{equation*} We provide a bijective proof of this fact, thus solving a problem posed by Stanley. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the number of rectangles in the Young diagram of a partition. We also mention a result for sums of other powers of hook lengths and contents.

Rotation invariant webs for three row flamingo Specht modules
We introduce a new rotation-invariant web basis for a family of Specht modules $S^{(d^3, 1^{n-3d})}$, indexed by normal plabic graphs satisfying a degree condition and resembling $A_2$ webs. We show that the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on our basis can be understood combinatorially via a set of skein relations. From this basis, we obtain a cyclic sieving result for a $q$-analog of the hook length formula for $λ$. Our construction extends the jellyfish invariants of Fraser, Patrias, Pechenik, and Striker and is closely related to the weblike subgraphs of Lam.
Partitions with fixed points in the sequence of first-column hook lengths
Published in Ann. Comb. (2024 online first) • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Blecher and Knopfmacher applied the notion of fixed points to integer partitions. This has already been generalized and refined in various ways such as $h$-fixed points for an integer parameter $h$ by Hopkins and Sellers. Here, we consider the sequence of first column hook lengths in the Young diagram of a partition and corresponding fixed hooks. We enumerate these, using both generating function and combinatorial proofs, and find that they match occurrences of part sizes equal to their multiplicity. We establish connections to work of Andrews and Merca on truncations of the pentagonal number theorem and classes of partitions partially characterized by certain minimal excluded parts (mex).

A note on hook length equidistribution on arithmetic progressions
In a recent paper, Bringmann, Craig, Ono, and the author showed that the number of $t$-hooks ($t\geq2$) among all partitions of $n$ is not always asymptotically equidistributed on congruence classes $a \pmod{b}$. In this short note, we clarify the situation of $t=1$, i.e. all hook lengths, and show that this case does give asymptotic equidistribution, closing the story of the distribution properties of $t$-hooks on congruence classes.
Hook lengths in self-conjugate partitions
In 2010, G.-N. Han obtained the generating function for the number of size $t$ hooks among integer partitions. Here we obtain these generating functions for self-conjugate partitions, which are particularly elegant for even $t$. If $n_t(λ)$ is the number of size $t$ hooks in a partition $λ,$ then for even $t$ we have $$\sum_{λ\in \mathcal{SC}} x^{n_t(λ)} q^{\vertλ\vert} = (-q;q^2)_{\infty} \cdot ((1-x^2)q^{2t};q^{2t})_{\infty}^{\frac{t}2}. $$ As a consequence, if $a_t^*(n)$ is the number of such hooks among the self-conjugate partitions of $n,$ then for even $t$ we obtain the simple formula $$ a_t^*(n)=t\sum_{j\geq 1} q^*(n-2tj), $$ where $q^*(m)$ is the number of partitions of $m$ into distinct odd parts. As a corollary, we find that $t\mid a_t^*(n),$ which confirms a conjecture of Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom, and Wen.

Minimal skew semistandard tableaux and the Hillman--Grassl correspondence
Standard tableaux of skew shape are fundamental objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and no product formula for the number is known. In 2014, Naruse gave a formula (NHLF) as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. Subsequently, Morales, Pak, and Panova gave a $q$-analogue of this formula in terms of skew semistandard tableaux (SSYT). They also showed, partly algebraically, that the Hillman--Grassl map, restricted to skew semistandard tableaux, is behind their $q$-analogue. We study the problem of circumventing the algebraic part and proving the bijection completely combinatorially, which we do for border strips. For a skew shape, we define minimal semistandard Young tableaux, that are in correspondence with excited diagrams via a new description of the Hillman--Grassl bijection and have an analogue of excited moves. Lastly, we relate the minimal skew SSYT with the terms of the Okounkov-Olshanski formula (OOF) for counting standard tableaux of skew shape. Our construction immediately implies that the summands in the NHLF are less than the summands in the OOF and we characterize the shapes where both formulas have the same number of summands.
The Pak--Postnikov and Naruse skew hook length formulas: a new proof
The classical hook length formula of enumerative combinatorics expresses the number of standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape as a single fraction. In recent years, two generalizations of this formula have emerged: one by Pak and Postnikov, replacing the number by a (rational) generating function, and one by Naruse, which generalizes the setting from a partition to a skew partition. Both generalizations appear to lie significantly deeper, with no simple proofs known. We combine them into a generating-function identity for skew partitions, and prove it in a fairly elementary way using recursion, determinants and simple combinatorics.
