An explicit expansion formula for the powers of the Euler Product in terms of partition hook lengths
We discover an explicit expansion formula for the powers $s$ of the Euler Product (or Dedekind $η$-function) in terms of hook lengths of partitions, where the exponent $s$ is any complex number. Several classical formulas have been derived for certain integers $s$ by Euler, Jacobi, Klein, Fricke, Atkin, Winquist, Dyson and Macdonald. In particular, Macdonald obtained expansion formulas for the integer exponents $s$ for which there exists a semi-simple Lie algebra of dimension $s$. For the type $A_l^{(a)}$ he has expressed the $(t^2-1)$-st power of the Euler Product as a sum of weighted integer vectors of length $t$ for any integer $t$. Kostant has considered the general case for any positive integer $s$ and obtained further properties. ----- The present paper proposes a new approach. We convert the weighted vectors of length $t$ used by Macdonald in his identity for type $A_l^{(a)}$ to weighted partitions with free parameter $t$, so that a new identity on the latter combinatorial structures can be derived without any restrictions on $t$. The surprise is that the weighted partitions have a very simple form in terms of hook lengths of partitions. As applications of our formula, we find some new identities about hook lengths, including the "marked hook formula". We also improve a result due to Kostant. The proof of the Main Theorem is based on Macdonald's identity for $A_l^{(a)}$ and on the properties of a bijection between $t$-cores and integer vectors constructed by Garvan, Kim and Stanton.

On principal hook length partitions and durfee sizes in skew characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct for a given arbitrary skew diagram A all partitions nu with maximal principal hook lengths among all partitions with the character [nu] appearing in the skew character [A]. Furthermore we show that these are also partitions with minimal Durfee size. This we use to give the maximal Durfee size for [nu] appearing in [A] for the cases when A decays into two partitions and for some special cases of A. Also this gives conditions for two skew diagrams to represent the same skew character.

($\ell,0)$-Carter partitions, a generating function, and their crystal theoretic interpretation
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 15 (1), 2008 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an alternate combinatorial description of the "$(\ell,0)$-JM partitions" (see \cite{F}) that are also $\ell$-regular. Our main theorem is the equivalence of our combinatoric and the one introduced by James and Mathas (\cite{JM}). The condition of being an $(\ell,0)$-JM partition is fundamentally related to the hook lengths of the partition. The representation-theoretic significance of their combinatoric on an $\ell$-regular partition is that it indicates the irreducibility of the corresponding specialized Specht module over the finite Hecke algebra (see \cite{JM}). We use our result to find a generating series which counts the number of such partitions, with respect to the statistic of a partition's first part. We then apply our description of these partitions to the crystal graph $B(Λ_0)$ of the basic representation of $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_{\ell}}$, whose nodes are labeled by $\ell$-regular partitions. Here we give a fairly simple crystal-theoretic rule which generates all $\ell$-regular $(\ell,0)$-JM partitions in the graph $B(Λ_0)$. Finally, we mention how our construction can be generalized to recent results of M. Fayers (see \cite{F}) and S. Lyle (see \cite{L}) to count the total number of (not necessarily $\ell$-regular) Specht modules which stay irreducible at a primitive $\ell$th root of unity (for $\ell >2$).

Hook length polynomials for plane forests of a certain type
Published • View PublicationBIB
The original motivation for study for hook length polynomials was to find a combinatorial proof for a hook length formula for binary trees given by Postnikov, as well as a proof for a hook length polynomial formula conjectured by Lascoux. In this paper, we define the hook length polynomial for plane forests of a given degree sequence type and show it can be factored into a product of linear forms. Some other enumerative results on forests are also given.

Principal $Γ$-cone for a tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Each orientation on a Dynkin graph $Γ$ defines a cone (in a certain real configuration space) which is further divided into chambers. We enumerate the number of chambers for two particular cones, which are called the pricipal $Γ$-cones and are attached to bipartite decompositions of $Γ$, by a use of hook length formulae. We prove that these pricipal cones are characterized by the maximality of the number of chambers in them.

A refinement of Cayley's formula for trees
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 11, no. 2 (2004-6), R27 • View PublicationBIB
A proper vertex of a rooted tree with totally ordered vertices is a vertex that is less than all its proper descendants. We count several kinds of labeled rooted trees and forests by the number of proper vertices. Our results are all expressed in terms of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c)= c(a+(n-1)b+c)(2a+(n-2)b+c)...((n-1)a+b+c) which reduce to (n+1)^{n-1} for a=b=c=1. Our study of proper vertices was motivated by A. Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees (arXiv:math.CO/0507163), which was also proved by W. Y. C. Chen and L. L. M. Yang (arXiv:math.CO/0507163) and generalized by R. R. X. Du and F. Liu (arXiv:math.CO/0501147). Our approach gives a new proof of Du and Liu's results and gives new hook length formulas. We also find an interpretation of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c) in terms of parking functions: we count parking functions according to the number of cars that park in their preferred parking spaces.

(k,m)-Catalan Numbers and Hook Length Polynomials for Plane Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a formula of A. Postnikov relating binary trees, we define the hook length polynomials for m-ary trees and plane forests, and show that these polynomials have a simple binomial expression. An integer value of this expression is C_{k,m}(n)=\frac{1}{mn+1}{(mn+1)k \choose n}, which we call the (k,m)-Catalan number. For proving the hook length formulas, we also introduce a combinatorial family, (k,m)-ary trees, which are counted by the (k,m)-Catalan numbers.

Hook-lengths and Pairs of Compositions
Published in J. Comp. Appl. Math. 199 (2007), 39-47 • View PublicationBIB
The monomial basis for polynomials in N variables is labeled by compositions. To each composition there is associated a hook-length product, which is a product of linear functions of a parameter. The zeroes of this product are related to "critical pairs" of compositions; a concept defined in this paper. This property can be described in an elementary geometric way; for example: consider the two compositions (2,7,8,2,0,0) and (5,1,2,5,3,3), then the respective ranks, permutations of the index set {1,2,...,6} sorting the compositions, are (3,2,1,4,5,6) and (1,6,5,2,3,4), and the two vectors of differences (between the compositions and the ranks, respectively) are (-3,6,6,-3,-3,-3) and (2,-4,-4,2,2,2), which are parallel, with ratio -3/2. For a given composition and zero of its hook-length product there is an algorithm for constructing another composition with the parallelism property and which is comparable to it in a certain partial order on compositions, derived from the dominance order. This paper presents the motivation from the theory of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials and the description of the algorithm, as well as the proof of its validity.

Order ideals in weak subposets of Young's lattice and associated unimodality conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The k-Young lattice Y^k is a weak subposet of the Young lattice containing partitions whose first part is bounded by an integer k>0. The Y^k poset was introduced in connection with generalized Schur functions and later shown to be isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group by a maximal parabolic subgroup. We prove a number of properties for $Y^k$ including that the covering relation is preserved when elements are translated by rectangular partitions with hook-length $k$. We highlight the order ideal generated by an $m\times n$ rectangular shape. This order ideal, L^k(m,n), reduces to L(m,n) for large k, and we prove it is isomorphic to the induced subposet of L(m,n) whose vertex set is restricted to elements with no more than k-m+1 parts smaller than m. We provide explicit formulas for the number of elements and the rank-generating function of L^k(m,n). We conclude with unimodality conjectures involving q-binomial coefficients and discuss how implications connect to recent work on sieved q-binomial coefficients.

A mixed hook-length formula for affine Hecke algebras
Published in European J. Combinatorics 25 (2004), 1345-1376 • View PublicationBIB
Consider the affine Hecke algebra $H_l$ corresponding to the group $GL_l$ over a $p$-adic field with the residue field of cardinality $q$. Regard $H_l$ as an associative algebra over the field $C(q)$. Consider the $H_{l+m}$-module $W$ induced from the tensor product of the evaluation modules over the algebras $H_l$ and $H_m$. The module $W$ depends on two partitions $λ$ of $l$ and $μ$ of $m$, and on two non-zero elements of the field $C(q)$. There is a canonical operator $J$ acting on $W$, it corresponds to the trigonometric $R$-matrix. The algebra $H_{l+m}$ contains the finite dimensional Hecke algebra of rank $l+m$ as a subalgebra, and the operator $J$ commutes with the action of this subalgebra on $W$. Under this action, $W$ decomposes into irreducible subspaces according to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We compute the eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to certain multiplicity-free irreducible components of $W$. In particular, we give a formula for the ratio of two eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to the ``highest'' and the ``lowest'' components. As an application, we derive the well known $q$-analogue of the hook-length formula for the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$.

A bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux
We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted standard tableaux is analog to the construction of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii, however, unlike to their algorithm, we are forced to use the 'rowwise' total order of the cells in the shifted Ferrers diagram rather than the 'columnwise' total order as the underlying order in the algorithm. Unfortunately the construction of the shifted hook tabloid is more complicated in the shifted case. As a side-result we obtain a simple random algorithm for generating shifted standard tableaux of a given shape, which produces every such tableau equally likely.

A symmetry theorem on a modified jeu de taquin
Published • View PublicationBIB
For their bijective proof of the hook-length formula for the number of standard tableaux of a fixed shape Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a modified jeu de taquin which transforms an arbitrary filling of the Ferrers diagram with $1,2,...,n$ (tabloid) into a standard tableau. Their definition relies on a total order of the cells in the Ferrers diagram induced by a special standard tableau, however, this definition also makes sense for the total order induced by any other standard tableau. Given two standard tableaux $P,Q$ of the same shape we show that the number of tabloids which result in $P$ if we perform modified jeu de taquin with respect to the total order induced by $Q$ is equal to the number of tabloids which result in $Q$ if we perform modified jeu de taquin with respect to $P$. This symmetry theorem extends to skew shapes and shifted skew shapes.

Mixed hook-length formula for degenerate affine Hecke algebras

Take the degenerate affine Hecke algebra $H_{l+m}$ corresponding to the group $GL_{l+m}$ over a $p$-adic field. Consider the $H_{l+m}$-module $W$ induced from the tensor product of the evaluation modules over the algebras $H_l$ and $H_m$. The module $W$ depends on two partitions $λ$ of $l$ and $μ$ of $m$, and on two complex numbers $z$ and $w$. There is a canonical operator $J$ acting in $W$, it corresponds to the rational Yang $R$-matrix. The algebra $H_{l+m}$ contains the symmetric group $S_{l+m}$, and $J$ commutes with the action of $S_{l+m}$ in $W$. Under this action, $W$ decomposes into irreducible subspaces according to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We compute the eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to certain multiplicity-free irreducible components of $W$. In particular, we obtain a nice formula for the ratio of two eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to the "highest" and "lowest" (multiplicity-free) irreducible components of $W$.
