The skew diagram poset and components of skew characters
We investigate the poset of skew diagrams ordered by adding or forming the union of skew diagrams. We will show that a skew diagram which has at least n convex corners to the upper left and also to the lower right is larger than the skew diagram consisting of n disconnected single boxes. Using this property, we obtain lower bounds for the number of components, constituents and pairs of components which differ by one box in a given skew character.

Skew characters which contain only few components
Wrong assumptions were made in the proof of Theorem 3.12 and Lemma 3.6. A preprint containing a correct proof for Lemma 3.6 is in preparation and will be uploaded later this month. So the results of section 3 are correct, apart from Theorem 3.12 and the remarks following Theorem 3.12.

Reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free or contain only few components
Published in European J. Combin. 31 (2010), pp. 1996-2005 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the Kronecker coefficient of three partitions is a bounded and weakly increasing sequence if one increases the first part of all three partitions. Furthermore if the first parts of partitions λ,μare big enough then the coefficients of the Kronecker product [λ][μ]=\sum_\n g(ł,\m,\n)[ν] do not depend on the first part but only on the other parts. The reduced Kronecker product [λ]_\bullet \star[μ]_\bullet can be viewed (roughly) as the Kronecker product [(n-|λ|,λ)][(n-|μ|,\m)] for n big enough. In this paper we classify the reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free and those which contain less than 10 components. We furthermore give general lower bounds for the number of constituents and components of a given reduced Kronecker product. We also give a lower bound for the number of pairs of components whose corresponding partitions differ by one box. Finally we argue that equality of two reduced Kronecker products is only possible in the trivial case that the factors of the product are the same.

Generalised Stretched Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1829-1842 • View PublicationBIB
The Littlewood-Richardson (LR) coefficient counts among many other things the LR tableaux of a given shape and a given content. We prove, that the number of LR tableaux weakly increases if one adds to the shape and the content the shape and the content of another LR tableau. We also investigate the behaviour of the number of LR tableaux, if one repeatedly adds to the shape another shape with either fixed or arbitrary content. This is a generalisation of the stretched LR coefficients, where one repeatedly adds the same shape and content to itself.

Equality of multiplicity free skew characters
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. (2009) 30: 215-232 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show that two skew diagrams lambda/mu and alpha/beta can represent the same multiplicity free skew character [lambda/mu]=[alpha/beta] only in the the trivial cases when lambda/mu and alpha/beta are the same up to translation or rotation or if lambda=alpha is a staircase partition lambda=(l,l-1,...,2,1) and lambda/mu and alpha/beta are conjugate of each other.

On Base Partitions And Cover Partitions Of Skew Characters
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 15(1) (2008), N30 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an easy combinatorial description for the base partition B of a skew character [A], which is the intersection of all partitions alpha whose corresponding character [alpha] appears in [A]. This we use to construct the cover partition C for the ordinary outer product as well as for the Schubert product of two characters and for some skew characters, here the cover partition is the union of all partitions whose corresponding character appears in the product or in the skew character. This gives us also the Durfee size for arbitrary Schubert products.

On principal hook length partitions and durfee sizes in skew characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct for a given arbitrary skew diagram A all partitions nu with maximal principal hook lengths among all partitions with the character [nu] appearing in the skew character [A]. Furthermore we show that these are also partitions with minimal Durfee size. This we use to give the maximal Durfee size for [nu] appearing in [A] for the cases when A decays into two partitions and for some special cases of A. Also this gives conditions for two skew diagrams to represent the same skew character.

On multiplicity-free skew characters and the Schubert Calculus
Published in Annals of Combinatorics: Volume 14, Issue 3 (2010), Page 339 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we classify the multiplicity-free skew characters of the symmetric group. Furthermore we show that the Schubert calculus is equivalent to that of skew characters in the following sense: If we decompose the product of two Schubert classes we get the same as if we decompose a skew character and replace the irreducible characters by Schubert classes of the `inverse' partitions (Theorem 4.2).
