Symmetric Dellac configurations and symplectic/orthogonal flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of this paper is to study the link between the topology of the degenerate flag varieties and combinatorics of the Dellac configurations. We define three new classes of algebraic varieties closely related to the degenerate flag varieties of types A and C. The construction is based on the quiver Grassmannian realization of the degenerate flag varieties and odd symplectic and odd and even orthogonal groups. We study basic properties of our varieties; in particular, we construct cellular decomposition in all the three cases above (as well as in the case of even symplectic group). We also compute the Poincaré polynomials in terms of certain statistics on the set of symmetric Dellac configurations.
Parabolic orbits of $2$-nilpotent elements for classical groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the conjugation-action of the Borel subgroup of the symplectic or the orthogonal group on the variety of nilpotent complex elements of nilpotency degree $2$ in its Lie algebra. We translate the setup to a representation-theoretic context in the language of a symmetric quiver algebra. This makes it possible to provide a parametrization of the orbits via a combinatorial tool that we call symplectic/orthogonal oriented link patterns. We deduce information about numerology. We then generalize these classifications to standard parabolic subgroups for all classical groups. Finally, our results are restricted to the nilradical.

A Sundaram type bijection for SO(3): vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux
Based on the direct-sum-decomposition of the rth tensor power of the defining representation of the special orthogonal group SO(2k+1) one is interested in a bijective approach for determining the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components. In particular this leads us to a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, which we present for SO(3). Moreover we introduce the descent set of a vacillating tableau. As our bijection preserves this descent set, we also obtain the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters.

On involutions and indicators of finite orthogonal groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the numbers of involutions and their relation to Frobenius-Schur indicators in the groups $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(n,q)$ and $Ω^{\pm}(n,q)$. Our point of view for this study comes from two motivations. The first is the conjecture that a finite simple group $G$ is strongly real (all elements are conjugate to their inverses by an involution) if and only if it is totally orthogonal (all Frobenius-Schur indicators are 1), and we are able to show this holds for all finite simple groups $G$ other than the groups $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,q)$ with $q$ even or $Ω^{\pm}(4m,q)$ with $q$ even. We prove computationally that for small $n$ and $m$ this statement indeed holds for these groups by equating their character degree sums to the number of involutions. We also prove a result on a certain twisted indicator for the groups $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(4m+2,q)$ with $q$ odd. Our second motivation is to continue the work of Fulman, Guralnick, and Stanton on generating function and asymptotics for involutions in classical groups. We extend their work by finding generating functions for the numbers of involutions in $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(n,q)$ and $Ω^{\pm}(n,q)$ for all $q$, and we use these to compute the asymptotic behavior for the number of involutions in these groups when $q$ is fixed and $n$ grows.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

Weight multiplicities and Young tableaux through affine crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
The weight multiplicities of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras can be computed individually using various methods. Still, it is hard to derive explicit closed formulas. Similarly, explicit closed formulas for the multiplicities of maximal weights of affine Kac--Moody algebras are not known in most cases. In this paper, we study weight multiplicities for both finite and affine cases of classical types for certain infinite families of highest weights modules. We introduce new classes of Young tableaux, called the {\em $($spin$)$ rigid tableaux}, and prove that they are equinumerous to the weight multiplicities of the highest weight modules under our consideration. These new classes of Young tableaux arise from crystal basis elements for dominant maximal weights of the integrable highest weight modules over affine Kac--Moody algebras. By applying combinatorics of tableaux such as the Robinson--Schensted algorithm and new insertion schemes, and using integrals over orthogonal groups, we reveal hidden structures in the sets of weight multiplicities and obtain explicit closed formulas for the weight multiplicities. In particular we show that some special families of weight multiplicities form the Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin, Riordan and Bessel triangles.

Schur P-positivity and involution Stanley symmetric functions
Published in IMRN (2017), rnx274 • View PublicationBIB
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and prove that this decomposition is triangular with respect to the dominance order on partitions. As an application, we derive pattern avoidance conditions which characterize the involution Stanley symmetric functions which are equal to Schur $P$-functions. We deduce as a corollary that the involution Stanley symmetric function of the reverse permutation is a Schur $P$-function indexed by a shifted staircase shape. These results lead to alternate proofs of theorems of Ardila-Serrano and DeWitt on skew Schur functions which are Schur $P$-functions. We also prove new Pfaffian formulas for certain related involution Schubert polynomials.

The Euclidean geometry of cardinal welfare functions
We exploit the standard inner product of Euclidean space to provide a new direction from which one can understand and analyze certain voting methods. Using this perspective along with the action of the symmetric and special orthogonal groups on the vector space of profiles, we extend some natural voting criteria to ballots of arbitrary composition type.

Strongly regular graphs from orthogonal groups $O^+(6,2)$ and $O^-(6,2)$
In this paper we construct all strongly regular graphs, with at most 600 vertices, admitting a transitive action of the orthogonal group $O^+(6,2)$ or $O^-(6,2)$. Consequently, we prove the existence of strongly regular graphs with parameters (216,40,4,8) and (540,187,58,68). We also construct a strongly regular graph with parameters (540,224,88,96) that was to the best of our knowledge previously unknown. Further, we show that under certain conditions an orbit matrix $M$ of a strongly regular graph $Γ$ can be used to define a new strongly regular graph $\widetildeΓ$, where the vertices of the graph $\widetildeΓ$ correspond to the orbits of $Γ$ (the rows of $M$). We show that some of the obtained graphs are related to each other in a way that one can be constructed from an orbit matrix of the other.

Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.

Regular polyhedra in the 3-torus
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we discuss the classification rank $3$ lattices preserved by finite orthogonal groups of isometries and derive from it the classification of regular polyhedra in the $3$-dimensional torus. This classification is highly related to the classification of regular polyhedra in the $3$-space.

Locally toroidal polytopes of rank 6 and sporadic groups
Published in Advances in Mathematics 312 (2017), 459--472 • View PublicationBIB
We augment the list of finite universal locally toroidal regular polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} due to P.McMullen and E.Schulte, adding as well as removing entries. This disproves a related long-standing conjecture. Our new universal polytope is related to a well-known Y-shaped presentation for the sporadic simple group $Fi_{22}$, and admits $S_4\times O_8^+(2){:}S_3$ as the automorphism group. We also discuss further extensions of its quotients in the context of Y-shaped presentations. As well, we note that two known examples of finite universal polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} are related to Y-shaped presentations of orthogonal groups over GF(2). Mixing construction is used in a number of places to describe covers and 2-covers.

Asymptotics of the number of involutions in finite classical groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.
Curvature and higher order Buser inequalities for the graph connection Laplacian
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 33 (2019), no.1, 257-305 • View PublicationBIB
We study the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian on a graph with an orthogonal group or unitary group signature. We establish higher order Buser type inequalities, i.e., we provide upper bounds for eigenvalues in terms of Cheeger constants in the case of nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this process, we discuss the concepts of Cheeger type constants and a discrete Ricci curvature for connection Laplacians and study their properties systematically. The Cheeger constants are defined as mixtures of the expansion rate of the underlying graph and the frustration index of the signature. The discrete curvature, which can be computed efficiently via solving semidefinite programming problems, has a characterization by the heat semigroup for functions combined with a heat semigroup for vector fields on the graph.

Bounded Littlewood identities
Published in Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society, 270 (2021), No 1317, vii+115 pp • View PublicationBIB
We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our method implies that MacMahon's famous ex-conjecture for the generating function of symmetric plane partitions in a box follows from the identification of $(\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R}),\mathrm{O}(n))$ as a Gelfand pair. As further applications, we obtain combinatorial formulas for characters of affine Lie algebras; Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras, complementing recent results of Griffin et al.; and quadratic transformation formulas for Kaneko--Macdonald-type basic hypergeometric series.

Tokuyama-type formulas for type B
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 216(2) (2016), 617-655 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain explicit formulas for the product of a deformed Weyl denominator with the character of an irreducible representation of the spin group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$, which is an analogue of the formulas of Tokuyama for Schur polynomials and Hamel-King for characters of symplectic groups. To give these, we start with a symplectic group and obtain such characters using the Casselman-Shalika formula. We then analyze this using objects which are naturally attached to the metaplectic double cover of an odd orthogonal group, which also has dual group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$.

Lossy gossip and composition of metrics
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 53(4), 890-913 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We study the monoid generated by n-by-n distance matrices under tropical (or min-plus) multiplication. Using the tropical geometry of the orthogonal group, we prove that this monoid is a finite polyhedral fan of dimension n(n-1)/2, and we compute the structure of this fan for n up to 5. The monoid captures gossip among n gossipers over lossy phone lines, and contains the gossip monoid over ordinary phone lines as a submonoid. We prove several new results about this submonoid, as well. In particular, we establish a sharp bound on chains of calls in each of which someone learns something new.

Half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and Tokuyama type factorisation for orthogonal group characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
Half turn symmetric alternating sign matrices (HTSASMs) are special variations of the well-known alternating sign matrices which have a long and fascinating history. HTSASMs are interesting combinatorial objects in their own right and have been the focus of recent study. Here we explore counting weighted HTSASMs with respect to a number of statistics to derive an orthogonal group version of Tokuyama's factorisation formula, which involves a deformation and expansion of Weyl's denominator formula multiplied by a general linear group character. Deformations of Weyl's original denominator formula to other root systems have been discovered by Okada and Simpson, and it is thus natural to ask for versions of Tokuyama's factorisation formula involving other root systems. Here we obtain such a formula involving a deformation of Weyl's denominator formula for the orthogonal group multiplied by a deformation of an orthogonal group character.

Vertex operators, Weyl determinant formulae and Littlewood duality
Published in Ann. Combin. 19 (2015), no.3, 427--442 • View PublicationBIB
Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.
