We study the Whittaker coefficients of the minimal parabolic Eisenstein series on the $n$-fold cover of the split odd orthogonal group $SO_{2r+1}$. If the degree of the cover is odd, then Beineke, Brubaker and Frechette have conjectured that the $p$-power contributions to the Whittaker coefficients may be computed using the theory of crystal graphs of type C, by attaching to each path component a Gauss sum or a degenerate Gauss sum depending on the fine structure of the path. We establish their conjecture using a combination of automorphic and combinatorial-representation-theoretic methods. Surprisingly, we must make use of the type A theory, and the two different crystal graph descriptions of Brubaker, Bump and Friedberg available for type A based on different factorizations of the long word into simple reflections. We also establish a formula for the Whittaker coefficients in the even degree cover case, again based on crystal graphs of type C. As a further consequence, we establish a Lie-theoretic description of the coefficients for $n$ sufficiently large, thereby confirming a conjecture of Brubaker, Bump and Friedberg.
On virtual link invariants
Virtual links were introduced by Kauffman in 1999. We characterize the virtual link invariants that are partition functions of vertex models (as considered by de la Harpe and Jones), both in the real and in the complex case. We show that for any fixed number of states, these invariants form an affine variety. Basic techniques are the first and second fundamental theorem of invariant theory for the orthogonal group (in the sense of Weyl) and some related methods from algebraic geometry.

Let K be the product O(n_1) x O(n_2) x ... x O(n_r) of orthogonal groups. Let V the r-fold tensor product of defining representations of each orthogonal factor. We compute a stable formula for the dimension of the K-invariant algebra of degree d homogeneous polynomial functions on V. To accomplish this, we compute a formula for the number of matchings which commute with a fixed permutation. Finally, we provide formulas for the invariants and describe a bijection between a basis for the space of invariants and the isomorphism classes of certain r-regular graphs on d vertices, as well as a method of associating each invariant to other combinatorial settings such as phylogenetic trees.

Using generating functions, we enumerate regular semisimple conjugacy classes in the finite classical groups. For the general linear, unitary, and symplectic groups this gives a different approach to known results; for the special orthogonal groups the results are new.

Let V be an n-dimensional vector space and let On be the orthogonal group. Motivated by a question of B. Szegedy (B. Szegedy, Edge coloring models and reflection positivity, Journal of the American Mathematical Society Volume 20, Number 4, 2007), about the rank of edge connection matrices of partition functions of vertex models, we give a combinatorial parameterization of tensors in V \otimes k invariant under certain subgroups of the orthogonal group. This allows us to give an answer to this question for vertex models with values in an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

We introduce affine Stanley symmetric functions for the special orthogonal groups, a class of symmetric functions that model the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, continuing the work of Lam and Lam, Schilling, and Shimozono on the special linear and symplectic groups, respectively. For the odd orthogonal groups, a Hopf-algebra isomorphism is given, identifying (co)homology Schubert classes with symmetric functions. For the even orthogonal groups, we conjecture an approximate model of (co)homology via symmetric functions. In the process, we develop type B and type D non-commutative k-Schur functions as elements of the nilCoxeter algebra that model homology of the affine Grassmannian. Additionally, Pieri rules for multiplication by special Schubert classes in homology are given in both cases. Finally, we present a type-free interpretation of Pieri factors, used in the definition of noncommutative k-Schur functions or affine Stanley symmetric functions for any classical type.
Mixing time upper bound for the uniformized Rosenthal walk on the special orthogonal groups
We prove that a uniformized variant of both the Rosenthal walk \cite{Rosenthal} and the Kac random walk \cite{Kac} on SO(n) mixes in $\cO(n^3)$ steps in total variation distance. The proof also extends easily to Rosenthal walk with fixed angle $θ\neq π$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first polynomial time bound for both walks. The techniques employed are mainly from representation theory of SO(n). But a crucial new ingredient is the interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of the character ratio as counting the number of particle cascade paths arising from the classical branching rules.

Combining Stein's method with heat kernel techniques, we study the function Tr(AO), where A is a fixed n by n real matrix over such that Tr(AA^t)=n, and O is from the Haar measure of the orthogonal group O(n,R). It is shown that the total variation distance of the random variable Tr(AO) to a standard normal random variable is bounded by 2 * squareroot(2) /(n-1), slightly improving the constant in a bound of Meckes, which was obtained by completely different methods.

We characterize the rank of edge connection matrices of partition functions of real vertex models, as the dimension of the homogeneous components of the algebra of $G$-invariant tensors. Here $G$ is the sub- group of the real orthogonal group that stabilizes the vertex model. This answers a question of Balázs Szegedy from 2007.
Suborbits of a point stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent of orthogonal dual polar graphs

As one of the serial papers on suborbits of point stabilizers in classical groups on the last subconstituent of dual polar graphs, the corresponding problem for orthogonal dual polar graphs over a finite field of odd characteristic is discussed in this paper. We determine all the suborbits of a point-stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent, and calculate the length of each suborbit. Moreover, we discuss the quasi-strongly regular graphs and the association schemes based on the last subconstituent, respectively.

It is well known that if one integrates a Schur function indexed by a partition $λ$ over the symplectic (resp. orthogonal) group, the integral vanishes unless all parts of $λ$ have even multiplicity (resp. all parts of $λ$ are even). In a recent paper of Rains and Vazirani, Macdonald polynomial generalizations of these identities and several others were developed and proved using Hecke algebra techniques. However at $q=0$ (the Hall-Littlewood level), these approaches do not work, although one can obtain the results by taking the appropriate limit. In this paper, we develop a direct approach for dealing with this special case. This technique allows us to prove some identities that were not amenable to the Hecke algebra approach, as well as to explicitly control the nonzero values. Moreover, we are able to generalize some of the identities by introducing extra parameters. This leads us to a finite-dimensional analog of a recent result of Warnaar, which uses the Rogers-Szegö polynomials to unify some existing summation type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions.

We study the integrals of type $I(a)=\int_{O_n}\prod u_{ij}^{a_{ij}}\,du$, depending on a matrix $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, whose exact computation is an open problem. Our results are as follows: (1) an extension of the "elementary expansion" formula from the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(2\mathbb N)$ to the general case $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (2) the construction of the "best algebraic normalization" of $I(a)$, in the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (3) an explicit formula for $I(a)$, for diagonal matrices $a\in M_{3\times 3}(\mathbb N)$, (4) a modelling result in the case $a\in M_{1\times 2}(\mathbb N)$, in relation with the Euler-Rodrigues formula. Most proofs use various combinatorial techniques.

In this article, we study the moonshine vertex operator algebra starting with the tensor product of three copies of the vertex operator algebra $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and describe it by the quadratic space over $\F_2$ associated to $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$. Using quadratic spaces and orthogonal groups, we show the transitivity of the automorphism group of the moonshine vertex operator algebra on the set of all full vertex operator subalgebras isomorphic to the tensor product of three copies of $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and determine the stabilizer of such a vertex operator subalgebra. Our approach is a vertex operator algebra analogue of "An $E_8$-approach to the Leech lattice and the Conway group" by Lepowsky and Meurman. Moreover, we find new analogies among the moonshine vertex operator algebra, the Leech lattice and the extended binary Golay code.

The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.
Embedding types and canonical affine maps between Bruhat-Tits buildings of classical groups (Thesis)
P. Broussous and S. Stevens studied maps between enlarged Bruhat-Tits buildings to construct types for p-adic unitary groups. They needed maps which respect the Moy-Prasad filtrations. That property is called (CLF), i.e. compatibility with the Lie algebra filtrations. In the first part of this thesis we generalise their results on such maps to the Quaternion-algebra case. Let k0 be a p-adic field of residue characteristic not two. We consider a semisimple k0-rational Lie algebra element beta of a unitary group G:=U(h) defined over k0 with a signed hermitian form h. Let H be the centraliser of beta in G. We prove the existence of an affine H(k0)-equivariant CLF-map j from the enlarged Bruhat-Tits building B^1(H,k0) to B^1(G,k0). As conjectured by Broussous the CLF-property determines j, if none of the factors of H is k0-isomorphic to the isotropic orthogonal group of k0-rank one and all factors are unitary groups. Under the weaker assumption that the affine CLF-map j is only equivariant under the center of H^0(k0) it is uniquely determined up to a translation of B^1(H,k0). The second part is devoted to the decoding of embedding types by the geometry of a CLF-map. Embedding types have been studied by Broussous and M. Grabitz. We consider a division algebra D of finite index with a p-adic center F. The construction of simple types for GLn(D) in the Budhnell-Kutzko framework required an investigation of strata which had to fulfil a rigidity property. Giving a stratum especially means to fix a pair (E,a) consisting of a field extension E|F in Mn(D) and a hereditary order a which is stable under conjugation by E^x, in other words we fix an embedding of E^x into the normalizer of a. Broussous and Grabitz classified these pairs with invariants. We describe and prove a way to decode these invariants using the geometry of a CLF-map.

We develop cycle index generating functions for orthogonal groups in even characteristic, and give some enumerative applications. A key step is the determination of the values of the complex linear-Weil characters of the finite symplectic group, and their inductions to the general linear group, at unipotent elements. We also define and study several natural probability measures on integer partitions.

We study the spectral aspects of the graph limit theory. We give a description of graphon convergence in terms of converegnce of eigenvalues and eigenspaces. Along these lines we prove a spectral version of the strong regularity lemma. Using spectral methods we investigate group actions on graphons. As an application we show that the set of isometry invariant graphons on the sphere is closed in terms of graph convergence however the analogous statement does not hold for the circle. This fact is rooted in the representation theory of the orthogonal group.

We study symmetric polynomials whose variables are odd-numbered Jucys-Murphy elements. They define elements of the Hecke algebra associated to the Gelfand pair of the symmetric group with the hyperoctahedral group. We evaluate their expansions in zonal spherical functions and in double coset sums. These evaluations are related to integrals of polynomial functions over orthogonal groups. Furthermore, we give an extension of them, based on Jack polynomials.

For a given cocharacter mu, mu-admissibility and mu-permissibility are combinatorial notions introduced by Kottwitz and Rapoport that arise in the theory of bad reduction of Shimura varieties. In this paper we prove that mu-admissibility is equivalent to mu-permissibility in all previously unknown cases of minuscule cocharacters mu in Iwahori-Weyl groups attached to split orthogonal groups. This, combined with other cases treated previously by Kottwitz-Rapoport and the author, establishes the equivalence of mu-admissibility and mu-permissibility for all minuscule cocharacters in split classical groups, as conjectured by Rapoport.
Platonic solids in $\mathbb Z^3$
Extending previous results on a characterization of all equilateral triangle in space having vertices with integer coordinates ("in $\mathbb Z^3$"), we look at the problem of characterizing all regular polyhedra (Platonic Solids) with the same property. To summarize, we show first that there is no regular icosahedron/ dodecahedron in $\mathbb Z^3$. On the other hand, there is a finite (6 or 12) class of regular tetrahedra in $\mathbb Z^3$, associated naturally to each nontrivial solution $(a,b,c,d)$ of the Diophantine equation $a^2+b^2+c^2=3d^2$ and for every nontrivial integer solution $(m,n,k)$ of the equation $m^2-mn+n^2=k^2$. Every regular tetrahedron in $\mathbb Z^3$ belongs, up to an integer translation and/or rotation, to one of these classes. We then show that each such tetrahedron can be completed to a cube with integer coordinates. The study of regular octahedra is reduced to the cube case via the duality between the two. This work allows one to basically give a description the orthogonal group $O(3,\mathbb Q)$ in terms of the seven integer parameters satisfying the two relations mentioned above.
