A Littlewood-type identity for Robbins polynomials
We provide a generalization of the Littlewood identity, both sides of which are related to alternating sign matrices. The classical Littlewood identity establishes a nice product formula for the sum of all Schur polynomials. Compared to the classical identity, Schur polynomials are replaced by so-called modified Robbins polynomials. These polynomials are a generalization of Schur polynomials and enumerate down-arrowed monotone triangles, and thus also alternating sign matrices. As an additional factor on the other side of the identity, we have a Pfaffian formula which we interpret in terms of the partition function of six-vertex model configurations corresponding to diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices.
Off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices
A diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrix (DSASM) is a symmetric matrix with entries $-1$, $0$ and $1$, where the nonzero entries alternate in sign along each row and column, and the sum of the entries in each row and column equals $1$. An off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrix (OSASM) is a DSASM, where the number of nonzero diagonal entries is 0 for even-order matrices and 1 for odd-order matrices. Kuperberg (Ann. Math., 2002) studied even-order OSASMs and derived a product formula for counting the number of OSASMs of any fixed even order. In this work, we provide a product formula for the number of odd-order OSASMs of any fixed order. Additionally, we present an algebraic proof of a symmetry property for even-order OSASMs. This resolves all the three conjectures of Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan (arXiv, 2023) regarding the exact enumeration of OSASMs.
Diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices
The enumeration of diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DSASMs) is studied, and a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of DSASMs of any fixed size, where the entries for the Pfaffian are positive integers given by simple binomial coefficient expressions. This result provides the first known case of an exact enumeration formula for an alternating sign matrix symmetry class in which a simple product formula does not seem to exist. Pfaffian formulae are also obtained for DSASM generating functions associated with several natural statistics, including the number of nonzero strictly upper triangular entries in a DSASM, the number of nonzero diagonal entries in a DSASM, and the column of the unique 1 in the first row of a DSASM. The proofs of these results involve introducing a version of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with DSASMs of fixed size, and obtaining a Pfaffian expression for its partition function. Various further results and conjectures are also obtained, including some related to the exact enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices, and some related to the asymptotic enumeration of DSASMs and other classes of alternating sign matrices.

We introduce a new symmetry class of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, called the off-diagonal symmetry class, which is motivated by the off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices introduced by Kuperberg in 2002. We use the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths to enumerate our new symmetry class. The number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond can be expressed as a Pfaffian of a matrix whose entries satisfy a nice and simple recurrence relation.

Vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs) of order $2n+1$ are known to be equinumerous with lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$ and a central triangular hole of size $2$ that exhibit a cyclical as well as a vertical symmetry, but finding an explicit bijection proving this belongs to the most difficult problems in bijective combinatorics. Towards constructing such a bijection, we generalize the result by introducing certain natural extensions for both objects along with $n+3$ parameters and show that the multivariate generating functions with respect to these parameters coincide. This is a significant step from a constant number of equidistributed statistics to a linear number of statistics in $n$. The equinumeracy of VSASMs and the lozenge tilings is then an easy consequence of this result, which is obtained by specializing the generating functions to signed enumerations for both types of objects and then applying certain sign-reversing involutions. Another main result concerns the expansion of the multivariate generating function into symplectic characters as a sum over totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, which is in perfect analogy to the situation for ordinary ASMs where the Schur expansion can be written as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions. This is exciting as it is reminiscent of the well-known Cauchy identity, and the Cauchy identity does have a bijective proof using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and thus the result raises the question of whether there is a variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence that does eventually lead to a bijective proof.

Halved monotone triangles are a generalisation of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs). We provide a weighted enumeration of halved monotone triangles with respect to a parameter which generalises the number of $-1$s in a VSASM. Among other things, this enables us to establish a generating function for vertically symmetric alternating sign trapezoids. Our results are mainly presented in terms of constant term expressions. For the proofs, we exploit Fischer's method of operator formulae as a key tool.

We prove refined enumeration results on several symmetry classes as well as related classes of alternating sign matrices with respect to classical boundary statistics, using the six-vertex model of statistical physics. More precisely, we study vertically symmetric, vertically and horizontally symmetric, vertically and horizontally perverse, off-diagonally and off-antidiagonally symmetric, vertically and off-diagonally symmetric, quarter turn symmetric as well as quasi quarter turn symmetric alternating sign matrices. Our results prove conjectures of Fischer, Duchon and Robbins.
Arctic Curves in path models from the Tangent Method

Recently, Colomo and Sportiello introduced a powerful method, known as the \emph{Tangent Method}, for computing the arctic curve in statistical models which have a (non- or weakly-) intersecting lattice path formulation. We apply the Tangent Method to compute arctic curves in various models: the domino tiling of the Aztec diamond for which we recover the celebrated arctic circle; a model of Dyck paths equivalent to the rhombus tiling of a half-hexagon for which we find an arctic half-ellipse; another rhombus tiling model with an arctic parabola; the vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices, where we find the same arctic curve as for unconstrained alternating sign matrices. The latter case involves lattice paths that are non-intersecting but that are allowed to have osculating contact points, for which the Tangent Method was argued to still apply. For each problem we estimate the large size asymptotics of a certain one-point function using LU decomposition of the corresponding Gessel-Viennot matrices, and a reformulation of the result amenable to asymptotic analysis.

For each $α\in \{0,1,-1 \}$, we count diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order with a maximal number of $α$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, as well as DASASMs of fixed odd order with a minimal number of $0$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal. In these enumerations, we encounter product formulas that have previously appeared in plane partition or alternating sign matrix counting, namely for the number of all alternating sign matrices, the number of cyclically symmetric plane partitions in a given box, and the number of vertically and horizontally symmetric ASMs. We also prove several refinements. For instance, in the case of DASASMs with a maximal number of $-1$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, these considerations lead naturally to the definition of alternating sign triangles. These are new objects that are equinumerous with ASMs, and we are able to prove a two parameter refinement of this fact, involving the number of $-1$'s and the inversion number on the ASM side. To prove our results, we extend techniques to deal with triangular six-vertex configurations that have recently successfully been applied to settle Robbins' conjecture on the number of all DASASMs of odd order. Importantly, we use a general solution of the reflection equation to prove the symmetry of the partition function in the spectral parameters. In all of our cases, we derive determinant or Pfaffian formulas for the partition functions, which we then specialize in order to obtain the product formulas for the various classes of extreme odd DASASMs under consideration.

We study the enumeration of diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order by introducing a case of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with such matrices. The model involves a grid graph on a triangle, with bulk and boundary weights which satisfy the Yang-Baxter and reflection equations. We obtain a general expression for the partition function of this model as a sum of two determinantal terms, and show that at a certain point each of these terms reduces to a Schur function. We are then able to prove a conjecture of Robbins from the mid 1980's that the total number of $(2n+1)\times(2n+1)$ DASASMs is $\prod_{i=0}^n\frac{(3i)!}{(n+i)!}$, and a conjecture of Stroganov from 2008 that the ratio between the numbers of $(2n+1)\times(2n+1)$ DASASMs with central entry $-1$ and $1$ is $n/(n+1)$. Among the several product formulae for the enumeration of symmetric alternating sign matrices which were conjectured in the 1980's, that for odd-order DASASMs is the last to have been proved.

In 2007, the first author gave an alternative proof of the refined alternating sign matrix theorem by introducing a linear equation system that determines the refined ASM numbers uniquely. Computer experiments suggest that the numbers appearing in a conjecture concerning the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices with respect to the position of the first 1 in the second row of the matrix establish the solution of a linear equation system similar to the one for the ordinary refined ASM numbers. In this paper we show how our attempt to prove this fact naturally leads to a more general conjectural multivariate Laurent polynomial identity. Remarkably, in contrast to the ordinary refined ASM numbers, we need to extend the combinatorial interpretation of the numbers to parameters which are not contained in the combinatorial admissible domain. Some partial results towards proving the conjectured multivariate Laurent polynomial identity and additional motivation why to study it are presented as well.

Half turn symmetric alternating sign matrices (HTSASMs) are special variations of the well-known alternating sign matrices which have a long and fascinating history. HTSASMs are interesting combinatorial objects in their own right and have been the focus of recent study. Here we explore counting weighted HTSASMs with respect to a number of statistics to derive an orthogonal group version of Tokuyama's factorisation formula, which involves a deformation and expansion of Weyl's denominator formula multiplied by a general linear group character. Deformations of Weyl's original denominator formula to other root systems have been discovered by Okada and Simpson, and it is thus natural to ask for versions of Tokuyama's factorisation formula involving other root systems. Here we obtain such a formula involving a deformation of Weyl's denominator formula for the orthogonal group multiplied by a deformation of an orthogonal group character.
Patterns of Alternating Sign Matrices
We initiate a study of the zero-nonzero patterns of n by n alternating sign matrices. We characterize the row (column) sum vectors of these patterns and determine their minimum term rank. In the case of connected alternating sign matrices, we find the minimum number of nonzero entries and characterize the case of equality. We also study symmetric alternating sign matrices, in particular, those with only zeros on the main diagonal. These give rise to alternating signed graphs without loops, and we determine the maximum number of edges in such graphs. We also consider n by n alternating sign matrices whose patterns are maximal within the class of all n by n alternating sign matrices.

We consider partial sum rules for the homogeneous limit of the solution of the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundaries in the Dyck path representation. We show that these partial sums arise in a solution of the discrete Hirota equation, and prove that they are the generating functions of $τ^2$-weighted punctured cyclically symmetric transpose complement plane partitions where $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. In the cases of no or minimal punctures, we prove that these generating functions coincide with $τ^2$-enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices and modifications thereof.

Monotone triangles are certain triangular arrays of integers, which correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the monotone triangle. In this article we define halved monotone triangles, a specialization of which correspond to vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices. We derive an operator formula for the number of halved monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row which is analogous to our operator formula for the number of ordinary monotone triangle.

The integrable loop model with mixed boundary conditions based on the 1-boundary extended Temperley--Lieb algebra with loop weight 1 is considered. The corresponding qKZ equation is introduced and its minimal degree solution described. As a result, the sum of the properly normalized components of the ground state in size L is computed and shown to be equal to the number of Horizontally and Vertically Symmetric Alternating Sign Matrices of size 2L+3. A refined counting is also considered.
On refined enumerations of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions II
In this paper we settle a weak version of a conjecture (i.e. Conjecture 6) by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey in the paper "Self-complementary totally symmetric plane partitions" (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 42, 277-292). In other words we show that the number of shifted plane partitions invariant under an involution is equal to the number of alternating sign matrices invariant under the vertical flip. We also give a determinantal formula for the general conjecture (Conjecture 6), but this determinant is still hard to evaluate. In this paper we introduce two new classes of domino plane partitions, one has the same cardinality as the set of half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and the other has the same cardinality as the set of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.

We find higher rank generalizations of the Razumov--Stroganov sum rules at $q=-e^{iπ\over k+1}$ for $A_{k-1}$ models with open boundaries, by constructing polynomial solutions of level one boundary quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations for $U_q(\frak{sl}(k))$. The result takes the form of a character of the symplectic group, that leads to a generalization of the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices. We also investigate the other combinatorial point $q=-1$, presumably related to the geometry of nilpotent matrix varieties.

An alternating sign matrix is a square matrix with entries 1, 0 and -1 such that the sum of the entries in each row and each column is equal to 1 and the nonzero entries alternate in sign along each row and each column. To some of the symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices and their variations, G. Kuperberg associate square ice models with appropriate boundary conditions, and give determinanat and Pfaffian formulae for the partition functions. In this paper, we utilize several determinant and Pfaffian identities to evaluate Kuperberg's determinants and Pfaffians, and express the round partition functions in terms of irreducible characters of classical groups. In particular, we settle a conjecture on the number of vertically and horizontally symmetric alternating sign matrices (VHSASMs).

We examine the groundstate wavefunction of the rotor model for different boundary conditions. Three conjectures are made on the appearance of numbers enumerating alternating sign matrices. In addition to those occurring in the O($n=1$) model we find the number $A_{\rm V}(2m+1;3)$, which 3-enumerates vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.
