Counting Lie ideals of niltriangular matrices
We give a formula for the number of ideals of the Lie algebra of strictly lower triangular $n\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb F_q$. A contraction bijection transforms Gagnon's sum into a weighted enumeration of nonnesting partitions, with antichains of intervals chosen independently in each block. The block weights are the inversion polynomials for $321$-avoiding permutations. Combining the known Stieltjes continued fraction for these polynomials with the enumeration of nonnesting partitions by block sizes yields a formula involving $n-1$ coefficient extractions, valid for every prime power $q$.
Hankel determinants of Catalan-like sequences
In this paper, we compute the (shifted) Hankel determinants of Catalan-like sequences, which arise naturally from the weighted enumerations of nonintersecting Motzkin meanders. Among these determinant evaluations, one and a half are newly discovered, featuring generic shifted Hankel determinants; two were formulated earlier by Cigler and Krattenthaler in an equivalent combinatorial form; and the rest were conjectured by Cigler. As an application, we further confirm a conjectural binomial determinant identity proposed by Cigler and Krattenthaler.
A proof of Zeilberger's recurrence for solid standard Young tableaux of shape $[[n,n],[n,1]]$
Let $g(n)$ denote the number of solid standard Young tableaux of the two-layer shape $[[n,n],[n,1]]$. In his First Rigorous Challenge accompanying the solid-SYT project, Zeilberger observed empirically that $g(n)$ satisfies a linear recurrence of order $2$ with polynomial coefficients of degree $12$, and offered a prize for a proof. We prove the recurrence. The proof proceeds by a deletion-insertion bijection reducing $g(n)$ to weighted enumerations of Kreweras-type lattice walks in the quarter plane, which we evaluate in closed form via the algebraic kernel method of Bousquet-Melou and Mishna. Along the way we obtain several enumerative results of independent interest: a closed form for reverse-Kreweras walks ending on the diagonal, an explicit algebraic generating function for the diagonal, and the identity that a ballot-weighted sum of diagonal walk counts enumerates reverse-Kreweras walks of length $3n+1$ ending at $(1,0)$. The recurrence itself is explained structurally: $g$ lies in a $2$-dimensional module over $\mathbb{Q}(n)$ spanned by two hypergeometric terms, which forces a second-order recurrence and produces its coefficients by Cramer's rule.
Double-scaled SYK from boundary metrics of planar maps
The enumeration of planar maps with control on the boundary metric, i.e. the pseudometric induced on the outer face of the map by its bulk graph distance metric, is a difficult problem in general. However, we show that for a family of bipartite planar map models with special q-deformed face weights that arise in the physics context of the double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model (DSSYK) the enumeration admits a very simple answer. Encoding the boundary metric of a bipartite planar map by its so-called geodesic chord diagram, we prove that the weighted enumeration depends only on the crossing number of the chord diagram. At fixed perimeter, the induced law of the geodesic chord diagram in these planar map models coincides exactly with the chord diagram representation of the DSSYK model.
A probabilistic bijection between twenty-vertex configurations with a free west boundary and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns avoiding three equal entries in a row
We study a coincidence between two enumerations governed by the same product formula, reminiscent of the Robbins numbers: the unweighted enumeration of twenty-vertex configurations on quadrangular domains with fixed west boundary, and the weighted enumeration of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns avoiding three equal entries in a row. This coincidence naturally raises the question of whether there is a combinatorial explanation relating these two enumerations. In this paper, we provide such an explanation by constructing a probabilistic bijection between twenty-vertex configurations on quadrangular domains and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns avoiding three equal entries in a row. Under this probabilistic bijection, the west boundary of a twenty-vertex configuration corresponds to the bottom row of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns; in particular, the fixed boundary case corresponds to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with bottom row $(1, 2, \ldots, n)$. Combining this correspondence with an enumeration formula of Fischer and Schreier-Aigner for Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern avoiding three equal entries in a row with bounded entries, we obtain an enumeration formula for twenty-vertex configurations with a free west boundary.
On the combinatorics of the refined 1-leg DT/PT correspondence
We provide a new proof of a result of Bessenrodt on the relation among the generating series of reversed plane partitions and skew plane partitions, motivated by the geometric DT/PT wallcrossing formula for local curves recently proved by the third author. This also recovers a result of Sagan.
We moreover establish various new closed formulas for the weighted enumeration of reversed and skew plane partitions, proving a result dual to a theorem by Gansner, we find a new identity on the generating series counting internal and external hooks of a given Young diagram, and we combine the latter with Bessenrodt's theorem. Finally, we interpret our results as identities in the Fock space via the bosonic/fermionic formalism.
Local Statistics of the $M_n$-Dimer Model
The classical dimer model is concerned with the (weighted) enumeration of perfect matchings of a graph. An $n$-dimer cover is a multiset of edges that can be realized as the disjoint union of $n$ individual matchings. For a probability measure recently defined by Douglas, Kenyon, and Shi, which we call the $M_n$-dimer model, we study random $n$-dimer covers on bipartite graphs with matrix edge weights and produce formulas for local edge statistics and correlations. We also classify local moves that can be used to simplify the analysis of such graphs.
Domino tilings, nonintersecting lattice paths and subclasses of Koutschan-Krattenthaler-Schlosser determinants
Koutschan, Krattenthaler and Schlosser recently considered a family of binomial determinants. In this work, we give combinatorial interpretations of two subclasses of these determinants in terms of domino tilings and nonintersecting lattice paths, thereby partially answering a question of theirs. Furthermore, the determinant evaluations established by Koutschan, Krattenthaler and Schlosser produce many product formulas for our weighted enumerations of domino tilings and nonintersecting lattice paths. However, there are still two enumerations left corresponding to conjectural formulas made by the three. We hereby prove the two conjectures using the principle of holonomic Ansatz plus the approach of modular reduction for creative telescoping, and hence fill the gap.
Independent Set Enumeration in King Graphs by Tensor Network Contractions
This paper discusses the enumeration of independent sets in king graphs of size $m \times n$, based on the tensor network contractions algorithm given in reference~\cite{tilEnum}. We transform the problem into Wang tiling enumeration within an $(m+1) \times (n+1)$ rectangle and compute the results for all cases where $m + n \leq 79$ using tensor network contraction algorithm, and provided an approximation for larger $m, n$.
Using the same algorithm, we also enumerated independent sets with vertex number restrictions. Based on the results, we analyzed the vertex number that maximize the enumeration for each pair $(m, n)$. Additionally, we compute the corresponding weighted enumeration, where each independent set is weighted by the number of its vertices (i.e., the total sum of vertices over all independent sets). The approximations for larger $m, n$ are given as well.
Our results have added thousands of new items to the OEIS sequences A089980 and A193580. In addition, the combinatorial problems above are closely related to the hard-core model in physics. We estimate some important constants based on the existing results, and the relative error between our estimation of the entropy constant and the existing results is less than $10^{-9}$.
Solving tiling enumeration problems by tensor network contractions
This paper presents an algorithm for computing the contraction of two-dimensional tensor networks on a square lattice; and we combine it with solving congruence equations to compute the exact enumeration (including weighted enumeration) of Wang tilings. Based on this, the paper demonstrates how to transform other tiling enumeration problems (such as those of polyominoes) into Wang tiling enumeration problems, thereby solving them using this algorithm.
Our algorithm extends the sequence length records for dozens of sequences defined by polyomino tiling enumeration on chessboards on the OEIS website, covering numerous of different polyomino sets, including I-polyominoes, tetrominoes, pentominoes, etc. This demonstrates the high efficiency and strong universality of the algorithm for solving exact tiling enumeration problems.
In addition, the theory and techniques used in the algorithm establish a bridge between tensor network contractions and tiling enumeration, where the former provides a theoretical foundation for solving problems in the latter, while the latter offers an intuitive combinatorial interpretation of the former.

Recent work of the author connected several parking function enumeration problems to enumerations of Catalan paths with respect to certain weight functions that are expressed in terms of the ascent lengths. Motivated by this, we generalise and solve analogous weighted enumeration problems for a large family of lattice paths and weight functions, and discuss their connections with other enumeration problems and OEIS entries.
The monopole-dimer model on high-dimensional cylindrical, toroidal, Möbius and Klein grids
The dimer (monomer-dimer) model deals with weighted enumeration of perfect matchings (matchings). The monopole-dimer model is a signed variant of the monomer-dimer model whose partition function is a determinant. In 1999, Lu and Wu evaluated the partition function of the dimer model on two-dimensional grids embedded on a Möbius strip and a Klein bottle. While the partition function of the dimer model has been known for the two-dimensional grids with different boundary conditions, we present a similar product formula for the partition function of the monopole-dimer model on higher dimensional cylindrical and toroidal grid graphs. We also evaluate the same for the three-dimensional Möbius and Klein grid graphs and show that the formula does not generalise for the higher dimensions. Further, we present a relation between the product formula for the three-dimensional cylindrical and Möbius grid.
A graph-theoretic remark on Stieltjes moment sequences
For any integer $k\geq 1,$ define $L_k: \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}$ by $(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mapsto (a'_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ where $a'_n=\det(a_{n+i+j})_{i,j=0}^{k-1}$. Previously, Zhu showed that $L_k$ preserves the Stieltjes moment (SM) property of sequences (Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 2019). The proof used the characterization of SM sequences in terms of positive semidefinite Hankel matrices. In this note, we give another proof by viewing SM sequences as weighted enumerations of closed walks on $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof is essentially a double-counting argument that views a $k$-tuple of non-crossing Dyck paths as a single closed walk on some bipartite subgraph of $\mathbb{N}^k.$
Integration on complex Grassmannians, deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers, and interlacing phenomena

We introduce a family of polynomials, which arise in three distinct ways: in the large $N$ expansion of a matrix integral, as a weighted enumeration of factorisations of permutations, and via the topological recursion. More explicitly, we interpret the complex Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ as the space of $N \times N$ idempotent Hermitian matrices of rank $M$ and develop a Weingarten calculus to integrate products of matrix elements over it. In the regime of large $N$ and fixed ratio $\frac{M}{N}$, such integrals have expansions whose coefficients count factorisations of permutations into monotone sequences of transpositions, with each sequence weighted by a monomial in $t = 1 - \frac{N}{M}$. This gives rise to the desired polynomials, which specialise to the monotone Hurwitz numbers when $t = 1$.
These so-called deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers satisfy a cut-and-join recursion, a one-point recursion, and the topological recursion. Furthermore, we conjecture on the basis of overwhelming empirical evidence that the deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers are real-rooted polynomials whose roots satisfy remarkable interlacing phenomena.
An outcome of our work is the viewpoint that the topological recursion can be used to "topologise" sequences of polynomials, and we claim that the resulting families of polynomials may possess interesting properties. As a further case study, we consider a weighted enumeration of dessins d'enfant and conjecture that the resulting polynomials are also real-rooted and satisfy analogous interlacing properties.
Toric arc schemes and $q$-enumeration of lattice points
We introduce a natural weighted enumeration of lattice points in a polytope, and give a Brion-type formula for the corresponding generating function. The weighting has combinatorial significance, and its generating function may be viewed as a generalization of the Rogers-Szegő polynomials. It also arises from the geometry of the toric arc scheme associated to the normal fan of the polytope. We show that the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients at $q = 1$ is Gaussian.
Weighted enumeration of nonbacktracking walks on weighted graphs

We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Computational results are also provided.
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric plane partitions

We introduce a new family $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}$ of Schur positive symmetric functions, which are defined as sums over totally symmetric plane partitions. In the first part, we show that, for $k=1$, this family is equal to a multivariate generating function involving $n+3$ variables of objects that extend alternating sign matrices (ASMs), which have recently been introduced by the authors. This establishes a new connection between ASMs and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that ASMs are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. The proof is based on a new antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula for which we also provide a bijective proof. In the second part, we relate three specialisation of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}$ to a weighted enumeration of certain well-known classes of column strict shifted plane partitions that generalise descending plane partitions.
The quotient of generating functions of lozenge tilings for certain regions derived from hexagons, obtained with non--intersecting lattice paths
In a recent preprint, Lai showed that the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "half hexagons with lateral dents", which differ only in width, factors nicely, and the same is true for the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "quarter hexagons with lateral dents". Lai achieved this by using "graphical condensation" (i.e., application of a certain Pfaffian identity to the weighted enumeration of matchings).
The purpose of this note is to exhibit how this can be done by the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method for nonintersecting lattice paths. For the case of "half hexagons", basically the same observation, but restricted to mere enumeration (i.e., all weights of lozenge tilings are equal to $1$), is contained in a recent preprint of Condon.
Coxeter factorizations with generalized Jucys-Murphy weights and Matrix Tree theorems for reflection groups

We prove universal (case-free) formulas for the weighted enumeration of factorizations of Coxeter elements into products of reflections valid in any well-generated reflection group $W$, in terms of the spectrum of an associated operator, the $W$-Laplacian. This covers in particular all finite Coxeter groups. The results of this paper include generalizations of the Matrix Tree and Matrix Forest theorems to reflection groups, and cover reduced (shortest length) as well as arbitrary length factorizations.
Our formulas are relative to a choice of weighting system that consists of $n$ free scalar parameters and is defined in terms of a tower of parabolic subgroups. To study such systems we introduce (a class of) variants of the Jucys-Murphy elements for every group, from which we define a new notion of `tower equivalence' of virtual characters. A main technical point is to prove the tower equivalence between virtual characters naturally appearing in the problem, and exterior products of the reflection representation of $W$.
Finally we study how this $W$-Laplacian matrix we introduce can be used in other problems in Coxeter combinatorics. We explain how it defines analogues of trees for $W$ and how it relates them to Coxeter factorizations, we give new numerological identities between the Coxeter number of $W$ and those of its parabolic subgroups, and finally, when $W$ is a Weyl group, we produce a new, explicit formula for the volume of the corresponding root zonotope.
Gaussian Asymptotics of Jack Measures on Partitions from Weighted Enumeration of Ribbon Paths

In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certain joint cumulants are weighted sums of connected ribbon paths on $n$ sites with $n-1+g$ pairings, and derive our two results from the contributions of $(n,g)=(1,0)$ and $(2,0)$, respectively. Our analysis makes use of Nazarov-Sklyanin's spectral theory for Jack polynomials. As a consequence, we give new proofs of several results for Schur measures, Plancherel measures, and Jack-Plancherel measures. In addition, we relate our weighted sums of ribbon paths to the weighted sums of ribbon graphs of maps on non-oriented real surfaces recently introduced by Chapuy-Dolęga.
