Cluster Expansions from Punctured Orbifolds
We provide multiple combinatorial expansion formulas - in terms of snake graphs, labelled posets, matrices, and $T$-walks - for elements in generalized cluster algebras associated to arcs on punctured orbifolds and illustrate their equivalence. This work generalizes and unifies existing work on combinatorial expansion formulas from surfaces and unpunctured orbifolds.
Local Statistics of the $M_n$-Dimer Model
The classical dimer model is concerned with the (weighted) enumeration of perfect matchings of a graph. An $n$-dimer cover is a multiset of edges that can be realized as the disjoint union of $n$ individual matchings. For a probability measure recently defined by Douglas, Kenyon, and Shi, which we call the $M_n$-dimer model, we study random $n$-dimer covers on bipartite graphs with matrix edge weights and produce formulas for local edge statistics and correlations. We also classify local moves that can be used to simplify the analysis of such graphs.

Skein relations for punctured surfaces
We investigate skein relations in cluster algebras from punctured surfaces, extending the work of Çanakçi-Schiffler and Musiker-Williams on unpunctured surfaces. Using a combinatorial expansion formula by O{ğ}uz-Yıldırım and Pilaud-Reading-Schroll, we provide explicit formulas for these relations. This work demonstrates that the punctured analogues of the bangle and bracelet functions form spanning sets for cluster algebras associated with a punctured surfaces. For surfaces with boundary and closed surfaces of genus 0, we further show that the bangles and bracelets form bases.
An elaborate new proof of Cayley's formula
We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.
Snake Graphs for Graph LP Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph LP algebras are a generalization of cluster algebras introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy. We provide a combinatorial proof of positivity for certain cluster variables in these algebras. This proof uses a hypergraph generalization of snake graphs, a class of planar graphs which were used by Musiker, Schiffler, and Williams to prove positivity for cluster algebras from surfaces. These results extend those given in our previous paper, where we used a related combinatorial object known as a $T$-path.
Cluster scattering diagrams and theta functions for reciprocal generalized cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a construction of generalized cluster varieties and generalized cluster scattering diagrams for reciprocal generalized cluster algebras, the latter of which were defined by Chekhov and Shapiro. These constructions are analogous to the structures given for ordinary cluster algebras in the work of Gross, Hacking, Keel, and Kontsevich. As a consequence of these constructions, we are also able to construct theta functions for generalized cluster algebras, again in the reciprocal case, and demonstrate a number of their structural properties.
Rooted Clusters for Graph LP Algebras
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 089, 30 pages • View PublicationBIB
LP algebras, introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy, are a generalization of cluster algebras. These algebras are known to have the Laurent phenomenon, but positivity remains conjectural. Graph LP algebras are finite LP algebras encoded by a graph. For the graph LP algebra defined by a tree, we define a family of clusters called rooted clusters. We prove positivity for these clusters by giving explicit formulas for each cluster variable. We also give a combinatorial interpretation for these expansions using a generalization of $T$-paths.

Snake Graphs from Triangulated Orbifolds
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 138, 50 pages • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Laurent expansion of any arc or closed curve on an unpunctured triangulated orbifold. We do this by extending the snake graph construction of Musiker, Schiffler, and Williams to unpunctured orbifolds. In the case of an ordinary arc, this gives a combinatorial proof of positivity to the generalized cluster algebra from this orbifold.

Expected Number of Distinct Subsequences in Randomly Generated Binary Strings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (June 26, 2018) dmtcs:3287 • View PublicationBIB
When considering binary strings, it's natural to wonder how many distinct subsequences might exist in a given string. Given that there is an existing algorithm which provides a straightforward way to compute the number of distinct subsequences in a fixed string, we might next be interested in the expected number of distinct subsequences in random strings. This expected value is already known for random binary strings where each letter in the string is, independently, equally likely to be a 1 or a 0. We generalize this result to random strings where the letter 1 appears independently with probability $α\in [0,1]$. Also, we make some progress in the case of random strings from an arbitrary alphabet as well as when the string is generated by a two-state Markov chain.
The Total Acquisition Number of the Randomly Weighted Path
Published • View PublicationBIB
There exists a significant body of work on determining the acquisition number $a_t(G)$ of various graphs when the vertices of those graphs are each initially assigned a unit weight. We determine properties of the acquisition number of the path, star, complete, complete bipartite, cycle, and wheel graphs for variations on this initial weighting scheme, with the majority of our work focusing on the expected acquisition number of randomly weighted graphs. In particular, we bound the expected acquisition number $E(a_t(P_n))$ of the $n$-path when $n$ distinguishable "units" of integral weight, or chips, are randomly distributed across its vertices between $0.242n$ and $0.375n$. With computer support, we improve it by showing that $E(a_t(P_n))$ lies between $0.29523n$ and $0.29576n$. We then use subadditivity to show that the limiting ratio $\lim E(a_t(P_n))/n$ exists, and simulations reveal more exactly what the limiting value equals. The Hoeffding-Azuma inequality is used to prove that the acquisition number is tightly concentrated around its expected value. Additionally, in a different context, we offer a non-optimal acquisition protocol algorithm for the randomly weighted path and exactly compute the expected size of the resultant residual set.
Universal and Near-Universal Cycles of Set Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study universal cycles of the set ${\cal P}(n,k)$ of $k$-partitions of the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and prove that the transition digraph associated with ${\cal P}(n,k)$ is Eulerian. But this does not imply that universal cycles (or ucycles) exist, since vertices represent equivalence classes of partitions! We use this result to prove, however, that ucycles of ${\cal P}(n,k)$ exist for all $n \geq 3$ when $k=2$. We reprove that they exist for odd $n$ when $k = n-1$ and that they do not exist for even $n$ when $k = n-1$. An infinite family of $(n,k)$ for which ucycles do not exist is shown to be those pairs for which $S(n-2, k-2)$ is odd ($3 \leq k < n-1$). We also show that there exist universal cycles of partitions of $[n]$ into $k$ subsets of distinct sizes when $k$ is sufficiently smaller than $n$, and therefore that there exist universal packings of the partitions in ${\cal P}(n,k)$. An analogous result for coverings completes the investigation.
