New results on the domain of analyticity of the free energy for the Ising model
We investigate the analyticity of the free energy of the Ising model in the presence of a non-zero external magnetic field, at high temperature, and at low temperature. Using the Fernandez--Procacci convergence criterion for cluster expansions, together with generating-function techniques and graph-theoretical methods, we derive improved convergence conditions in all three regimes. In particular, the generating-function approach yields sharper estimates for polymers and contours in the strong-field and low-temperature regimes, while a new high-temperature expansion based on Veblen's theorem provides a substantially larger analyticity region than the classical results in the literature.
Cluster Expansions from Punctured Orbifolds
We provide multiple combinatorial expansion formulas - in terms of snake graphs, labelled posets, matrices, and $T$-walks - for elements in generalized cluster algebras associated to arcs on punctured orbifolds and illustrate their equivalence. This work generalizes and unifies existing work on combinatorial expansion formulas from surfaces and unpunctured orbifolds.
Degree-sequence bounds for independent sets via multivariate local occupancy
We present new degree-sequence lower bounds on the expected size of an independent set from the hard-core model. For arbitrary graphs, we establish a multivariate lower bound inspired by a conjecture of the first author and Kang and a recent bound on the multivariate partition function due to Lee and the third author. By applying a novel spectral analysis to the local occupancy linear program, our method successfully bypasses the convergence radius limitations of the cluster expansion and avoids induction. For graphs with bounded local maximum average degree, including triangle-free graphs, we prove a univariate bound extending prior work by a subset of the authors. In both cases our bounds require the fugacities to be upper bounded by $c/Δ$ where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $c$ is an absolute constant depending on the setting.
Sampling from the antiferromagnetic Ising model on bipartite, regular expander graphs
The antiferromagnetic Ising model samples subsets of vertices of a graph with weight decaying exponentially in the number of edges induced. We study the problem of sampling from this model on the class of bipartite, regular graphs with good vertex expansion. We show that a natural sampler, namely the Glauber dynamics, mixes exponentially slowly in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, we give an efficient alternative algorithm for sampling from the Ising model and an FPTAS for its partition function, using polymer models and the cluster expansion method.

On the expansion formulas of cluster varieties from surfaces and their combinatorial properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper explores the cluster algebra structure of the moduli space $\mathscr{A}_{\mathrm{SL}_{n+1},\mathbb{S}}$ of twisted $\mathrm{SL}_{n+1}$-local systems on a surface. We derive general recurrence relations for cluster variables arising from flips of a triangulation, corresponding to specific sequences of mutations. Our approach is grounded in a detailed combinatorial analysis over the standard $n$-triangulated $m$-gon (with explicit calculations for $n=1,2$). As a generalization, the non-simply-laced $G_2$ type is also considered. We prove the "well-triangulated" property for cluster mutations under flips, which provides a combinatorial framework for understanding the stability and transformation rules of these cluster algebra structures, and compute the monomial counts for the cluster expansion formula.

Efficient Algorithms for Weakly-Interacting Quantum Spin Systems
We establish efficient algorithms for weakly-interacting quantum spin systems at arbitrary temperature. In particular, we obtain a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function and an efficient approximate sampling scheme for the thermal distribution over a classical spin space. Our approach is based on the cluster expansion method and a standard reduction from approximate sampling to approximate counting.
On the number of antichains in $\{0,1,2\}^n$
We provide precise asymptotics for the number of antichains in the poset $\{0,1,2\}^n$, answering a question of Sapozhenko. Finding improved estimates for this number was also a problem suggested by Noel, Scott, and Sudakov, who obtained asymptotics for the logarithm of the number. Key ingredients for the proof include a graph-container lemma to bound the number of expanding sets in a class of irregular graphs, isoperimetric inequalities for generalizations of the Boolean lattice, and methods from statistical physics based on the cluster expansion.

Skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras from surfaces and symmetric quivers
We study skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras $\mathcal{A}$ associated with unpunctured surfaces $\tilde{\mathbf{S}}$ endowed with an orientation-preserving involution $σ$. We give a geometric realization of such cluster algebras by showing that cluster variables of $\mathcal{A}$ correspond to $σ$-orbits of arcs of $\tilde{\mathbf{S}}$, while clusters are given by admissible $σ$-invariant triangulations. We establish a ring homomorphism from $\mathcal{A}$ to a skew-symmetric cluster algebra of the same rank, which is combinatorially derived from $\mathcal{A}$. We use this result to provide a cluster expansion formula for any $σ$-orbit $[γ]$ in terms of perfect matchings of some labeled modified snake graphs constructed from the arcs of $[γ]$. Then, we associate a symmetric finite-dimensional algebra $A$ to any seed of $\mathcal{A}$, such that non-initial cluster variables bijectively correspond to orthogonal indecomposable $A$-modules. Finally, we exhibit a purely representation-theoretic map from the category of orthogonal $A$-modules to $\mathcal{A}$, providing a Caldero-Chapoton map in this setting.

Approximate Counting in Local Lemma Regimes
We establish efficient approximate counting algorithms for several natural problems in local lemma regimes. In particular, we consider the probability of intersection of events and the dimension of intersection of subspaces. Our approach is based on the cluster expansion method. We obtain fully polynomial-time approximation schemes for both the probability of intersection and the dimension of intersection for commuting projectors. For general projectors, we provide two algorithms: a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme under a global inclusion-exclusion stability condition, and an efficient affine approximation under a spectral gap assumption. As corollaries of our results, we obtain efficient algorithms for approximating the number of satisfying assignments of conjunctive normal form formulae and the dimension of satisfying subspaces of quantum satisfiability formulae.
Counting independent sets in percolated graphs via the Ising model
Given a graph $G$, we form a random subgraph $G_p$ by including each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. We provide an asymptotic expansion of the expected number of independent sets in random subgraphs of regular bipartite graphs satisfying certain vertex-isoperimetric properties, extending the work of Kronenberg and Spinka on the percolated hypercube. Combining graph containers with the cluster expansion from statistical physics, we give an expansion of the partition function of the Ising model in certain range of the parameters. Among other applications, we obtain results for even tori of growing side-length. As a tool, we prove a refined container lemma for the Ising model, which mildly improves recent bounds of Jenssen, Malekshahian, and Park.
Counting independent sets in expanding bipartite regular graphs
In this paper we provide an asymptotic expansion for the number of independent sets in a general class of regular, bipartite graphs satisfying some vertex-expansion properties, extending results of Jenssen and Perkins on the hypercube and strengthening results of Jenssen, Perkins and Potukuchi. More precisely, we give an expansion of the independence polynomial of such graphs using a polymer model and the cluster expansion. In addition to the number of independent sets, our results yields information on the typical structure of (weighted) independent sets in such graphs. The class of graphs we consider covers well-studied cases like the hypercube or the middle layers graph, and we show further that it includes any Cartesian product of bipartite, regular base graphs of bounded size. To this end, we prove strong bounds on the vertex expansion of bipartite and regular Cartesian product graphs, which might be of independent interest.

Asymptotically Enumerating Independent Sets in Regular $k$-Partite $k$-Uniform Hypergraphs
The number of independent sets in regular bipartite expander graphs can be efficiently approximated by expressing it as the partition function of a suitable polymer model and truncating its cluster expansion. While this approach has been extensively used for graphs, surprisingly little is known about analogous questions in the context of hypergraphs. In this work, we apply this method to asymptotically determine the number of independent sets in regular $k$-partite $k$-uniform hypergraphs which satisfy natural expansion properties. The resulting formula depends only on the local structure of the hypergraph, making it computationally efficient. In particular, we provide a simple closed-form expression for linear hypergraphs.
Lower tails for triangles inside the critical window
We study the probability that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is triangle-free. When $p =o(n^{-1/2})$ or $p = ω(n^{-1/2})$ the asymptotics of the logarithm of this probability are known via Janson's inequality in the former case and via regularity or hypergraph container methods in the latter case. We prove for the first time an asymptotic formula for the logarithm of this probability when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ a sufficiently small constant. More generally, we study lower-tail large deviations for triangles in random graphs: the probability that $G(n,p)$ has at most $η$ times its expected number of triangles, when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ and $η\in [0,1)$ constant. Our results apply for all $c$ if $η\ge .4993$ and for $c$ small enough otherwise. For $η$ small (including the case of triangle-freeness), we prove that a phase transition occurs as $c$ varies, in the sense of a non-analyticity of the rate function, while for $η\ge .4993$ we prove that no phase transition occurs. On the other hand for the random graph $G(n,m)$, with $m = b n^{3/2}$, we show that a phase transition occurs in the lower-tail problem for triangles as $b$ varies for \emph{every} $η\in [0,1)$. Our method involves ingredients from algorithms and statistical physics including the cluster expansion and concentration inequalities for contractive Markov chains.
On Dedekind's problem, a sparse version of Sperner's theorem, and antichains of a given size in the Boolean lattice
Dedekind's problem, dating back to 1897, asks for the total number $ψ(n)$ of antichains contained in the Boolean lattice $B_n$ on $n$ elements. We study Dedekind's problem using a recently developed method based on the cluster expansion from statistical physics and as a result, obtain several new results on the number and typical structure of antichains in $B_n$. We obtain detailed estimates for both $ψ(n)$ and the number of antichains of size $β\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$ for any fixed $β>0$. We also establish a sparse version of Sperner's theorem: we determine the sharp threshold and scaling window for the property that almost every antichain of size $m$ is contained in a middle layer of $B_n$.
Gaussian to log-normal transition for independent sets in a percolated hypercube
Independent sets in graphs, i.e., subsets of vertices where no two are adjacent, have long been studied, for instance as a model of hard-core gas. The $d$-dimensional hypercube, $\{0,1\}^d$, with the nearest neighbor structure, has been a particularly appealing choice for the base graph, owing in part to its many symmetries. Results go back to the work of Korshunov and Sapozhenko who proved sharp results on the count of such sets as well as structure theorems for random samples drawn uniformly. Of much interest is the behavior of such Gibbs measures in the presence of disorder. In this direction, Kronenberg and Spinka [KS] initiated the study of independent sets in a random subgraph of the hypercube obtained by considering an instance of bond percolation with probability $p$. Relying on tools from statistical mechanics they obtained a detailed understanding of the moments of the partition function, say $\mathcal{Z}$, of the hard-core model on such random graphs and consequently deduced certain fluctuation information, as well as posed a series of interesting questions. In particular, they showed in the uniform case that there is a natural phase transition at $p=2/3$ where $\mathcal{Z}$ transitions from being concentrated for $p>2/3$ to not concentrated at $p=2/3$. In this article, developing a probabilistic framework, as well as relying on certain cluster expansion inputs from [KS], we present a detailed picture of both the fluctuations of $\mathcal{Z}$ as well as the geometry of a randomly sampled independent set. In particular, we establish that $\mathcal{Z}$, properly centered and scaled, converges to a standard Gaussian for $p>2/3$, and to a sum of two i.i.d. log-normals at $p=2/3$. A particular step in the proof which could be of independent interest involves a non-uniform birthday problem for which collisions emerge at $p=2/3$.

Deterministic approximation for the volume of the truncated fractional matching polytope
We give a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for the volume of the truncated fractional matching polytope for graphs of maximum degree $Δ$, where the truncation is by restricting each variable to the interval $[0,\frac{1+δ}Δ]$, and $δ\le \frac{C}Δ$ for some constant $C>0$. We also generalise our result to the fractional matching polytope for hypergraphs of maximum degree $Δ$ and maximum hyperedge size $k$, truncated by $[0,\frac{1+δ}Δ]$ as well, where $δ\le CΔ^{-\frac{2k-3}{k-1}}k^{-1}$ for some constant $C>0$. The latter result generalises both the first result for graphs (when $k=2$), and a result by Bencs and Regts (2024) for the truncated independence polytope (when $Δ=2$). Our approach is based on the cluster expansion technique.

Cluster expansion formulas and perfect matchings for type B and C
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 62.40 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbf{P}_{2n+2}$ be the regular polygon with $2n+2$ vertices, and let $θ$ be the rotation of 180$^\circ$. Fomin and Zelevinsky proved that $θ$-invariant triangulations of $\mathbf{P}_{2n+2}$ are in bijection with the clusters of cluster algebras of type $B_n$ or $C_n$. Furthermore, cluster variables correspond to the orbits of the action of $θ$ on the diagonals of $\mathbf{P}_{2n+2}$. In this paper, we associate a labeled modified snake graph $\mathcal{G}_{ab}$ to each $θ$-orbit $[a,b]$, and we get the cluster variables of type $B_n$ and $C_n$ which correspond to $[a,b]$ as perfect matching Laurent polynomials of $\mathcal{G}_{ab}$. This extends the work of Musiker for cluster algebras of type B and C to every seed.

A categorification of cluster algebras of type B and C through symmetric quivers

We express cluster variables of type $B_n$ and $C_n$ in terms of cluster variables of type $A_n$. Then we associate a cluster tilted bound symmetric quiver $Q$ of type $A_{2n-1}$ to any seed of a cluster algebra of type $B_n$ and $C_n$. Under this correspondence, cluster variables of type $B_n$ (resp. $C_n$) correspond to orthogonal (resp. symplectic) indecomposable representations of $Q$. We find a Caldero-Chapoton map in this setting. We also give a categorical interpretation of the cluster expansion formula in the case of acyclic quivers.

Independent sets in discrete tori of odd sidelength
It is a well known result due to Korshunov and Sapozhenko that the hypercube in $n$ dimensions has $(1 + o(1)) \cdot 2 \sqrt e \cdot 2^{2^{n-1}}$ independent sets. Jenssen and Keevash investigated in depth Cartesian powers of cycles of fixed even lengths far beyond counting independent sets. They wonder to which extent their results extend to cycles of odd length, where not even the easiest case, counting independent sets in Cartesian powers of the triangle, is known. In this paper, we make progress on their question by providing a lower bound, which we believe to be tight. We also obtain a less precise lower bound for the number of independent sets in Cartesian powers of arbitrary odd cycles and show how to approach this question both with the cluster expansion method as well as more directly with isoperimetric inequalities.

Algorithmic Cluster Expansions for Quantum Problems
Published in PRX Quantum 5, 010305 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We establish a general framework for developing approximation algorithms for a class of counting problems. Our framework is based on the cluster expansion of abstract polymer models formalism of Kotecký and Preiss. We apply our framework to obtain efficient algorithms for (1) approximating probability amplitudes of a class of quantum circuits close to the identity, (2) approximating expectation values of a class of quantum circuits with operators close to the identity, (3) approximating partition functions of a class of quantum spin systems at high temperature, and (4) approximating thermal expectation values of a class of quantum spin systems at high temperature with positive-semidefinite operators. Further, we obtain hardness of approximation results for approximating probability amplitudes of quantum circuits and partition functions of quantum spin systems. This establishes a computational complexity transition for these problems and shows that our algorithmic conditions are optimal under complexity-theoretic assumptions. Finally, we show that our algorithmic condition is almost optimal for expectation values and optimal for thermal expectation values in the sense of zero freeness.
