Sampling from the antiferromagnetic Ising model on bipartite, regular expander graphs
The antiferromagnetic Ising model samples subsets of vertices of a graph with weight decaying exponentially in the number of edges induced. We study the problem of sampling from this model on the class of bipartite, regular graphs with good vertex expansion. We show that a natural sampler, namely the Glauber dynamics, mixes exponentially slowly in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, we give an efficient alternative algorithm for sampling from the Ising model and an FPTAS for its partition function, using polymer models and the cluster expansion method.
On the number of antichains in $\{0,1,2\}^n$
We provide precise asymptotics for the number of antichains in the poset $\{0,1,2\}^n$, answering a question of Sapozhenko. Finding improved estimates for this number was also a problem suggested by Noel, Scott, and Sudakov, who obtained asymptotics for the logarithm of the number. Key ingredients for the proof include a graph-container lemma to bound the number of expanding sets in a class of irregular graphs, isoperimetric inequalities for generalizations of the Boolean lattice, and methods from statistical physics based on the cluster expansion.
Counting independent sets in percolated graphs via the Ising model
Given a graph $G$, we form a random subgraph $G_p$ by including each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. We provide an asymptotic expansion of the expected number of independent sets in random subgraphs of regular bipartite graphs satisfying certain vertex-isoperimetric properties, extending the work of Kronenberg and Spinka on the percolated hypercube. Combining graph containers with the cluster expansion from statistical physics, we give an expansion of the partition function of the Ising model in certain range of the parameters. Among other applications, we obtain results for even tori of growing side-length. As a tool, we prove a refined container lemma for the Ising model, which mildly improves recent bounds of Jenssen, Malekshahian, and Park.

Percolation on hypergraphs and the hard-core model
We prove tight bounds on the site percolation threshold for $k$-uniform hypergraphs of maximum degree $Δ$ and for $k$-uniform hypergraphs of maximum degree $Δ$ in which any pair of edges overlaps in at most $r$ vertices. The hypergraphs that achieve these bounds are hypertrees, but unlike in the case of graphs, there are many different $k$-uniform, $Δ$-regular hypertrees. Determining the extremal tree for a given $k, Δ, r$ involves an optimization problem, and our bounds arise from a convex relaxation of this problem. By combining our percolation bounds with the method of disagreement percolation we obtain improved bounds on the uniqueness threshold for the hard-core model on hypergraphs satisfying the same constraints. Our uniqueness conditions imply exponential weak spatial mixing, and go beyond the known bounds for rapid mixing of local Markov chains and existence of efficient approximate counting and sampling algorithms. Our results lead to natural conjectures regarding the aforementioned algorithmic tasks, based on the intuition that uniqueness thresholds for the extremal hypertrees for percolation determine computational thresholds.

Note on the number of antichains in generalizations of the Boolean lattice
We give a short and self-contained argument that shows that, for any positive integers $t$ and $n$ with $t =O\Bigl(\frac{n}{\log n}\Bigr)$, the number $α([t]^n)$ of antichains of the poset $[t]^n$ is at most \[\exp_2\Bigl(1+O\Bigl(\Bigl(\frac{t\log^3 n}{n}\Bigr)^{1/2}\Bigr)\Bigr)N(t,n)\,,\] where $N(t,n)$ is the size of a largest level of $[t]^n$. This, in particular, says that if $t \ll n/\log^3 n$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$, then $\logα([t]^n)=(1+o(1))N(t,n)$, giving a (partially) positive answer to a question of Moshkovitz and Shapira for $t, n$ in this range. Particularly for $t=3$, we prove a better upper bound: \[\logα([3]^n)\le(1+4\log 3/n)N(3,n),\] which is the best known upper bound on the number of antichains of $[3]^n$.
Discrepancies of subtrees
We study multicolour, oriented and high-dimensional discrepancies of the set of all subtrees of a tree. As our main result, we show that the $r$-colour discrepancy of the subtrees of any tree is a linear function of the number of leaves $\ell$ of that tree. More concretely, we show that it is bounded by $\lceil(r-1)\ell/r\rceil$ from below and $\lceil(r-1)\ell/2\rceil$ from above, and that these bounds are asymptotically sharp. Motivated by this result, we introduce natural notions of oriented and high-dimensional discrepancies and prove bounds for the corresponding discrepancies of the set of all subtrees of a given tree as functions of its number of leaves.
On the zeroes of hypergraph independence polynomials

We study the locations of complex zeroes of independence polynomials of bounded degree hypergraphs. For graphs, this is a long-studied subject with applications to statistical physics, algorithms, and combinatorics. Results on zero-free regions for bounded-degree graphs include Shearer's result on the optimal zero-free disk, along with several recent results on other zero-free regions. Much less is known for hypergraphs. We make some steps towards an understanding of zero-free regions for bounded-degree hypergaphs by proving that all hypergraphs of maximum degree $Δ$ have a zero-free disk almost as large as the optimal disk for graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ established by Shearer (of radius $\sim 1/(e Δ)$). Up to logarithmic factors in $Δ$ this is optimal, even for hypergraphs with all edge-sizes strictly greater than $2$. We conjecture that for $k\ge 3$, $k$-uniform linear hypergraphs have a much larger zero-free disk of radius $Ω(Δ^{- \frac{1}{k-1}} )$. We establish this in the case of linear hypertrees.
On the Number of Independent Sets in Uniform, Regular, Linear Hypergraphs

We study the problems of bounding the number weak and strong independent sets in $r$-uniform, $d$-regular, $n$-vertex linear hypergraphs with no cross-edges. In the case of weak independent sets, we provide an upper bound that is tight up to the first order term for all (fixed) $r\ge 3$, with $d$ and $n$ going to infinity. In the case of strong independent sets, for $r=3$, we provide an upper bound that is tight up to the second-order term, improving on a result of Ordentlich-Roth (2004). The tightness in the strong independent set case is established by an explicit construction of a $3$-uniform, $d$-regular, cross-edge free, linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which could be of interest in other contexts. We leave open the general case(s) with some conjectures. Our proofs use the occupancy method introduced by Davies, Jenssen, Perkins, and Roberts (2017).
