A reformulation of the discrete Convexity Conjecture via $k$-thresholds
We introduce the notion of "$k$-thresholds'' and show that Talagrand's discrete convexity conjecture is equivalent to the assertion that, for some universal integer $k \ge 2$, the $k$-threshold of every increasing family is at most a universal constant times its expectation threshold. We prove a reduction theorem that bounds the $k$-threshold of any increasing graph property in terms of ordinary thresholds of graphs in suitable decompositions of its members. As a consequence, we determine, up to a constant factor, the $k$-threshold of every fixed graph in terms of a natural $k$-density parameter. We also prove that $k=2$ suffices for several classical spanning graph containment properties. More generally, we establish the conjectured comparison between $k$-thresholds and expectation thresholds for broad classes of graph containment properties whose target graphs have low degeneracy.
Range of random $\mathbb Z$-homomorphisms on weak expanders
We prove that random $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphisms on weakly expanding bipartite graphs exhibit a strong "flatness" phenomenon. Extending prior work of Peled, Samotij, and Yehudayoff for expanders, we first show that on any bipartite $(n, d, λ)$-graph with $λ\leq (1-δ)d$, a uniformly chosen $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphism has a range at most $O(\log \log n)$ with high probability, which is tight up to a constant factor. This provides an affirmative answer to their question in the spectral setting. As a concrete application, we prove that a random $\mathbb{Z}$-homomorphism on the middle layers of the Hamming cube takes at most $5$ values with high probability. This shows that the $O(1)$-flatness for the full Hamming cube, proved by Kahn and Galvin, persists even when the rigid structural properties are relaxed.
On the number of antichains in $\{0,1,2\}^n$
We provide precise asymptotics for the number of antichains in the poset $\{0,1,2\}^n$, answering a question of Sapozhenko. Finding improved estimates for this number was also a problem suggested by Noel, Scott, and Sudakov, who obtained asymptotics for the logarithm of the number. Key ingredients for the proof include a graph-container lemma to bound the number of expanding sets in a class of irregular graphs, isoperimetric inequalities for generalizations of the Boolean lattice, and methods from statistical physics based on the cluster expansion.
Asymptotic enumeration via graph containers and entropy
The container methods are powerful tools to bound the number of independent sets of graphs and hypergraphs, and they have been extremely influential in the area of extremal and probabilistic combinatorics. We will focus on more specialized graph container methods due to Sapozhenko (1987) that deal with sets in expander graphs. Entropy, first introduced by Shannon (1948) in the area of information theory, is a measure of the expected amount of information contained in a random variable. Entropy has seen lots of fascinating applications in a wide range of enumeration problems. In this survey article, we will discuss recent developments that exploit a combination of the two methods on enumerating graph homomorphisms.
On the "second" Kahn--Kalai Conjecture: cliques, cycles, and trees
We prove a few simple cases of a random graph statement that would imply the "second" Kahn--Kalai Conjecture. Even these cases turn out to be reasonably challenging, and it is hoped that the ideas introduced here may lead to further interest in, and further progress on, this natural problem.
On the "second" Kahn--Kalai Conjecture
We make progress on a conjecture of Kahn and Kalai, the original (stronger but less general) version of what became known as the ``Kahn-Kalai Conjecture" (KKC; now a theorem of Park and Pham). This ``second" KKC concerns the threshold, $p_c(H)$, for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a copy of a given graph $H$, predicting $p_c(H) = O(p_{\mathbb E}(H)\log n)$, where $p_{\mathbb E}$ is an easy lower bound on $p_c$. What we actually show is $p_{\mathbb E}^*(H)=O(p_{\mathbb E}(H)\log ^2n)$, where $p_{\mathbb E}^*$, the fractional expectation threshold, is a larger lower bound suggested by Talagrand. When combined with Talagrand's fractional relaxation of the KKC (now a theorem of Frankston, Kahn, Narayanan and Park), this gives $p_c(H)=O(p_{\mathbb E}(H)\log^3 n)$. (The second KKC would follow similarly if one could remove the log factors from the above bound on $p_{\mathbb E}^*$.)
Note on a conjecture of Talagrand: expectation thresholds vs. fractional expectation thresholds
We show that a restricted version of a conjecture of M. Talagrand on the relation between "expectation thresholds" and "fractional expectation thresholds" follows easily from a strong version of a second conjecture of Talagrand, on "selector processes." The selector process conjecture was proved by Park and Pham, and the quantitative strengthening used here is due to Bednorz, Martynek, and Meller.
Random Lipschitz functions on graphs with weak expansion
Benjamini, Yadin, and Yehudayoff (2007) showed that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ is 'sub-logarithmic,' then the typical range of random $\mathbb Z$-homomorphisms is super-constant. Furthermore, they showed that there is a sharp transition on the range of random $\mathbb Z$-homomorphisms on the graph $C_{n,k}$, the tensor product of the $n$-cycle and the complete graph on $k$ vertices with self-loops, around $k=2\log n$. We extend (to some extent) their results to random $M$-Lipschitz functions and random real-valued Lipschitz functions.

We establish a refined version of a graph container lemma due to Galvin and discuss several applications related to the hard-core model on bipartite expander graphs. Given a graph $G$ and $λ>0$, the hard-core model on $G$ at activity $λ$ is the probability distribution $μ_{G,λ}$ on independent sets in $G$ given by $μ_{G,λ}(I)\propto λ^{|I|}$. As one of our main applications, we show that the hard-core model at activity $λ$ on the hypercube $Q_d$ exhibits a `structured phase' for $λ= Ω( \log^2 d/d^{1/2})$ in the following sense: in a typical sample from $μ_{Q_d,λ}$, most vertices are contained in one side of the bipartition of $Q_d$. This improves upon a result of Galvin which establishes the same for $λ=Ω(\log d/ d^{1/3})$. As another application, we establish a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for the hard-core model on a $d$-regular bipartite $α$-expander, with $α>0$ fixed, when $λ= Ω( \log^2 d/d^{1/2})$. This improves upon the bound $λ=Ω(\log d/ d^{1/4})$ due to the first author, Perkins and Potukuchi. We discuss similar improvements to results of Galvin-Tetali, Balogh-Garcia-Li and Kronenberg-Spinka.
On Dedekind's problem, a sparse version of Sperner's theorem, and antichains of a given size in the Boolean lattice
Dedekind's problem, dating back to 1897, asks for the total number $ψ(n)$ of antichains contained in the Boolean lattice $B_n$ on $n$ elements. We study Dedekind's problem using a recently developed method based on the cluster expansion from statistical physics and as a result, obtain several new results on the number and typical structure of antichains in $B_n$. We obtain detailed estimates for both $ψ(n)$ and the number of antichains of size $β\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$ for any fixed $β>0$. We also establish a sparse version of Sperner's theorem: we determine the sharp threshold and scaling window for the property that almost every antichain of size $m$ is contained in a middle layer of $B_n$.
Lipschitz functions on weak expanders
Given a connected finite graph $G$, an integer-valued function $f$ on $V(G)$ is called $M$-Lipschitz if the value of $f$ changes by at most $M$ along the edges of $G$. In 2013, Peled, Samotij, and Yehudayoff showed that random $M$-Lipschitz functions on graphs with sufficiently good expansion typically exhibit small fluctuations, giving sharp bounds on the typical range of such functions, assuming $M$ is not too large. We prove that the same conclusion holds under a relaxed expansion condition and for larger $M$, (partially) answering questions of Peled et al. Our techniques involve a combination of Sapozhenko's graph container methods and entropy methods from information theory.
Threshold phenomena for random discrete structures
In this expository article, we give a gentle introduction to the Erdős-Rényi random graphs and threshold phenomena that they exhibit. We also mildly introduce the Kahn-Kalai Conjecture with several intuitive examples, mainly targeting the general audience.
Note on the number of antichains in generalizations of the Boolean lattice
We give a short and self-contained argument that shows that, for any positive integers $t$ and $n$ with $t =O\Bigl(\frac{n}{\log n}\Bigr)$, the number $α([t]^n)$ of antichains of the poset $[t]^n$ is at most \[\exp_2\Bigl(1+O\Bigl(\Bigl(\frac{t\log^3 n}{n}\Bigr)^{1/2}\Bigr)\Bigr)N(t,n)\,,\] where $N(t,n)$ is the size of a largest level of $[t]^n$. This, in particular, says that if $t \ll n/\log^3 n$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$, then $\logα([t]^n)=(1+o(1))N(t,n)$, giving a (partially) positive answer to a question of Moshkovitz and Shapira for $t, n$ in this range.
Particularly for $t=3$, we prove a better upper bound: \[\logα([3]^n)\le(1+4\log 3/n)N(3,n),\] which is the best known upper bound on the number of antichains of $[3]^n$.
The number of colorings of the middle layers of the Hamming cube
For an odd integer $n = 2d-1$, let $\mathcal B_d$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of proper $q$-colorings of $V(\mathcal B_d)$ and give asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use various tools including information theory (entropy), Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of M. Jenssen and W. Perkins that combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.

For appropriate Gaussian processes, as a corollary of the majorizing measure theorem, Michel Talagrand (1987) proved that the event that the supremum is significantly larger than its expectation can be covered by a set of half-spaces whose sum of measures is small. We prove a conjecture of Talagrand that is the analog of this result in the Bernoulli-$p$ setting, and answer a question of Talagrand on the analogous result for general positive empirical processes.

Proving the ``expectation-threshold'' conjecture of Kahn and Kalai, we show that for any increasing property $\mathcal{F}$ on a finite set $X$, $$p_c(\mathcal{F})=O(q(\mathcal{F})\log \ell(\mathcal{F})),$$ where $p_c(\mathcal{F})$ and $q(\mathcal{F})$ are the threshold and ``expectation threshold'' of $\mathcal{F}$, and $\ell(\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum of $2$ and the maximum size of a minimal member of $\mathcal{F}$.
On a problem of M. Talagrand

We address a special case of a conjecture of M. Talagrand relating two notions of "threshold" for an increasing family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of a finite set $V$. The full conjecture implies equivalence of the "Fractional Expectation-Threshold Conjecture," due to Talagrand and recently proved by the authors and B. Narayanan, and the (stronger) "Expectation-Threshold Conjecture" of the second author and G. Kalai. The conjecture under discussion here says there is a fixed $L$ such that if, for a given $\mathcal F$, $p\in [0,1]$ admits $λ:2^V \rightarrow \mathbb R^+$ with \[ \mbox{$\sum_{S\subseteq F}λ_S\ge 1 ~~\forall F\in \mathcal F$} \] and \[ \mbox{$\sum_Sλ_Sp^{|S|} \le 1/2$} \] (a.k.a. $\mathcal F$ is weakly $p$-small), then $p/L$ admits such a $λ$ taking values in $\{0,1\}$ ($\mathcal F$ is $(p/L)$-small). Talagrand showed this when $λ$ is supported on singletons and suggested, as a more challenging test case, proving it when $λ$ is supported on pairs. The present work provides such a proof.

Let $Q_d$ be the $d$-dimensional Hamming cube and $N=|V(Q_d)|=2^d$. An independent set $I$ in $Q_d$ is called balanced if $I$ contains the same number of even and odd vertices. We show that the logarithm of the number of balanced independent sets in $Q_d$ is \[(1-Θ(1/\sqrt d))N/2.\] The key ingredient of the proof is an improved version of "Sapozhenko's graph container lemma."

A celebrated conjecture of Zs. Tuza says that in any (finite) graph, the minimum size of a cover of triangles by edges is at most twice the maximum size of a set of edge-disjoint triangles. Resolving a recent question of Bennett, Dudek, and Zerbib, we show that this is true for random graphs; more precisely:
\[ \mbox{for any $p=p(n)$, $\mathbb P(\mbox{$G_{n,p}$ satisfies Tuza's Conjecture})\rightarrow 1 $ (as $n\rightarrow\infty$).} \]
