On card guessing after an asymmetric single-shelf shuffle
We provide a definitive analysis of the number of correct guesses in the complete-feedback card guessing game after an asymmetric single-shelf shuffle with parameter $p\in (0, 1)$. We explicitly describe the optimal strategy that maximizes the expected number of correct guesses. We study the number of correct guesses, under an optimal strategy, using methods from analytic combinatorics. In addition, we find the explicit distribution for the number of correct guesses, and thus find the mean and the variance for the number of correct guesses. We show that the distribution of the number of correct guesses is log-concave. We also study the limiting behaviour of the number of correct guesses as the number of cards goes to infinity. In particular, we prove a (local) central limit theorem and a large deviation principle with an explicit rate function. We also prove phase transitions for the number of correct guesses near $p=0$ and $p=1$. Prior to this work, only the optimal strategy and the expected number of correct guesses under the optimal strategy were known for the special case of $p=1/2$.

Cutoff for asymmetric shelf shuffle
A mechanical shuffler consists of $m$ shelves. A deck of $n$ cards, arranged in increasing order, is dealt from the bottom sequentially. Each card is assigned a shelf uniformly at random and placed on the top (bottom) of the existing pile with probability $p$ ($1-p$) independently. We refer to this as asymmetric shelf-shuffle. We find the law $ν_{n, m}^{(p)}$ of the permutation induced by the asymmetric shelf-shuffle and show that the pair consisting of the number of descents and the number of valleys is a sufficient statistic. This generalizes a result of Diaconis, Fulman, and Holmes (Ann. Appl. Prob., 2013) corresponding to the case $p=1/2$. For $p=1/2$, Chen and Ottolini (ECP, 2025) established the cutoff in the total variation distance near $\lfloor n^{5/4}\rfloor$. We establish the cutoff for the asymmetric shelf shuffle. Let $ν_n$ be the uniform measure on the set of all permutations $S_n$ of $\{1, \ldots, n\}$. For a fixed $p\neq 1/2$ and $c>0$, we show that \[\TV\left(ν_{n, \lfloor cn^{3/2}\rfloor }^{(p)}, ν_n\right)=1-2Φ\left(-\frac{|2p-1|}{4\sqrt{3}c}\right)+O_{c, p}(n^{-1/2})\;.\] We also establish the cutoff in the separation distance near $m\approx n^{2}$ and in the relative entropy near $m=n^{3/2}$. In both cases, we also obtain the cutoff profile explicitly.

Analysis of the asymmetric shelf shuffle
In an asymmetric shelf shuffle, a deck of $n$ cards is dealt sequentially from the bottom and assigned one of the $m$ shelves uniformly at random. The card is placed at the top of the assigned shelf with probability $p$, and at the bottom of the assigned shelf with probability $(1-p)$. Analysis of the shelf shuffle has gained much attention recently, and the case $p=1/2$ was first treated by Diaconis--Fulman--Holmes [Ann. Appl. Prob. 23 (2013), no. 4, 1692--1720]. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the shelf shuffle to general $p\in (0, 1)$. In particular, we study the distribution of cycles, cycle lengths, number of descents, number of valleys, number of inversions, and the RSK shape of a permutation obtained from an asymmetric shelf shuffle. Our results extend the analysis of Diaconis--Fulman--Holmes to arbitrary $p$. Furthermore, our analysis of the distribution of descents and inversions is new even for $p=1/2$.
Log-Sobolev under random monotone censoring
We show that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality of the Boolean cube is stable under random monotone censoring. More precisely, if $A_n\subseteq \{0,1\}^n$ is chosen uniformly among all monotone subsets, then the logarithmic Sobolev constant of the censored walk on $A_n$ is of order $n$ with high probability. As a consequence, several analytic and probabilistic properties of the Boolean cube persist for a typical monotone subset: the censored semigroup is hypercontractive, the uniform measure on $A_n$ satisfies Gaussian concentration for Lipschitz observables, and the associated walk mixes in time $O(n\log n)$. The latter proves a conjectured mixing bound of Ding and Mossel for almost all monotone sets. The result is genuinely typical rather than universal. We construct monotone sets of density bounded away from zero whose logarithmic Sobolev constant is of order $n^2$. To prove the result, we establish a sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequality for Hamming caps and combine it with a harmonic extension argument transferring this inequality to monotone sets lying between nearby caps, together with a structural theorem of Korshunov on random monotone sets.

On the partition function of a class of Mallows model
Let $\Sym{n}$ denote the set of all permutations on $n$ labels. Let $c:[0, 1]^2\to [0, \infty)$ be a twice continuously differentiable function. A subfamily of the Mallows model is the Gibbs probability measures on $\Sym{n}$ such that $\mathbb{P}(X=σ)=L_n^{-1} \prod_{i=1}^{n}\exp(-c(i/n, σ(i)/n))$. Mukherjee [Ann. Stat., Vol. 44(2), pp 853--875 (2016)] computed the limit of the log partition function and showed that $\lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{1}{n}\log L_n=-Γ_0$ where $Γ_0$ is the optimal cost associated with an entropy regularized optimal transport problem. In the KRP Memorial Volume of the Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Math, Pal conjectured an exact value for the limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} e^{-nΓ_0}L_n$ in terms of the Fredholm determinant of an integral operator and provided a partial proof. We give a complete proof of Pal's conjecture.

On the position matrix of single-shelf shuffle and card guessing
Mechanical shufflers used in many casinos employ a card shuffling scheme called \emph{shelf shuffling}. In a single-shelf shuffling, cards arrive sequentially, and each incoming card is independently placed on the top or the bottom of a shelf with equal probability. The position matrix of a single-shelf shuffling encodes the probability that the $i$-th incoming card is in position $j$ after one round of single-shelf shuffle. The spectral properties of the position matrix of card shuffling schemes are helpful in the analysis of card guessing games without feedback. In this paper, we determine the full spectrum and the corresponding eigenspaces of the position matrix $M$ of a single-shelf shuffle. This strengthens and resolves two conjectures in a recent work [arXiv:2507.10294]. As a consequence of these results, we show that the maximum number of expected correct guesses without feedback after $k\geq (1+ε)$ many shuffles is of the order $1+O(n^{-2ε})$. On the other hand, the expected number of correct guesses after one shuffle is at most $\sqrt{2n/π}+1+O(n^{-1/2})$, and we give a strategy (not optimal) that achieves $\sqrt{2n/π}-1$ number of correct cards in expectation.

Number of orbits of $k$-subsets of permutations
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group of order $n$. Say that two subsets $x, y\subseteq S_n$ are \emph{equivalent} if there exist permutations $g_1, g_2\in S_n$ such that $g_1xg_2=y$, where multiplication is understood elementwise. Recently, [Tripathi, 2024] and [Kushwaha and Triathi, 2025] asked for the asymptotics of $T(n,k)$, the number of subsets of $S_n$ of size $k$ up to this equivalence. It is easy to see that $T(n,0)=T(n, 1)=1$ and $T(n, 2)=p(n)-1$, where $p(n)$ is the number of integer partitions of $n$. In this work, we show that $T(n,k) = Λ_n(k)(1+o_n(1))$ for $3\leq k\leq n!-3$, where $Λ_n(k)=\frac{1}{n!^2}\binom{n!}{k}$. Furthermore, we prove that $$\frac{1}{Λ_n(n!/2)}T\!\left(n,\left[\sqrt{\tfrac{n!}{4}}x+\tfrac{n!}{2}\right]\right) ~\xrightarrow{n\to\infty}~ \exp\!\left(-\tfrac{x^2}{2}\right),$$ uniformly over $\mathbb{R}$.
Khintchine inequalities, trace monoids and Turán-type problems
We prove scalar and operator-valued Khintchine inequalities for mixtures of free and tensor-independent semicircle variables, interpolating between classical and free Khintchine-type inequalities. Specifically, we characterize the norm of sums of $G$-independent semicircle variables in terms of the spectral radius of the Cayley graph associated with the trace monoid determined by the graph $G$. Our approach relies on a precise correspondence between closed paths in trace monoids and the norms of such operator sums. This correspondence uncovers connections between non-commutative probability, combinatorial group theory, and extremal graph theory. In particular, we formulate Turán-type extremal problems that govern maximal norm growth under classical commutation constraints, and identify the extremal configurations. We hope that the methods and connections developed here will be useful in the study of non-commutative structures constrained by combinatorial symmetries.

On log-concavity of the number of orbits in commuting tuples of permutations
Denote by $A(p, n, k)$ the number of commuting $p$-tuples of permutations on $[n]$ that have exactly $k$ distinct orbits. It was conjectured in~\cite{abdesselam2023log} that $A(p, n, k)$ is log-concave with respect to $k$ for every $p\geq 2, n\geq 3$, and the log-concavity was proved in ``$p=\infty$" case. In this paper, we prove that for $k=n-α$, the log-concavity for $A(p, n, k)$ holds for every $p\geq 2$ for sufficiently large $n$.
Finding Structure in Sequences of Real Numbers via Graph Theory: a Problem List
Published in Involve 15 (2022) 251-270 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a method of generating a graph $G=(V,E)$ out of an ordered list of $n$ distinct real numbers $a_1, \dots, a_n$. These graphs can be used to test for the presence of interesting structure in the sequence. We describe sequences exhibiting intricate hidden structure that was discovered this way. Our list includes sequences of Deutsch, Erdős, Freud & Hegyvari, Recaman, Quet, Zabolotskiy and Zizka. Since our observations are mostly empirical, each sequence in the list is an open problem.
