Crystal skeleton polynomials with major index, charge and depth
We introduce a new family of polynomials, crystal skeleton polynomials, to better understand enumeration of standard Young tableaux, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux and interactions with Gessel's expansion of a Schur function, quasi-crystals and crystal skeletons as Maas-Gariépy introduced in 2023. After developing calculus of those polynomials, we organize thoughts on major index, charge, depth, inversions with RSK correspondence and a bivariate factorial. Also, we revisit the theorem on internal zeros of fake degree polynomials by Billey--Konvalinka--Swanson (2020). These results altogether improve Gessel's expansion.
RSK via local transformations
We explain how to define the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence in terms of local transformations called "toggles." (This note, which is not intended for publication and which is based on presentations of Alex Postnikov, was written in 2014 and has been circulating since then. We are finally posting it to the arXiv for preservation purposes.)
Asymptotics of the Longest Increasing Subsequence in Random Permutations
In this paper, we examine the asymptotic behavior of the longest increasing subsequence (LIS) in a uniformly random permutation of $n$ elements. We rely on the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, Young tableaux, and key classical results -- including the Erdős--Szekeres theorem and the Hook Length Formula -- to demonstrate that the expected LIS length grows as $2\sqrt{n}$. We review the essential variational principles of Logan--Shepp and Vershik--Kerov, which determine the limiting shape of the associated random Young diagrams, and summarize the Baik--Deift--Johansson theorem that links fluctuations of the LIS length to the Tracy--Widom distribution. Our approach focuses on providing conceptual and intuitive explanations of these results, unifying classical proofs into a single narrative and supplying fresh visual examples, while referring the reader to the original literature for detailed proofs and rigorous arguments.
RSK and Quantum Symmetric Functions: A Combinatorial Approach
We explore an application of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) algorithm in the context of the quantum product of multi-symmetric functions. After reviewing the combinatorial foundations of quantum symmetric functions, we establish connections with transportation polytopes. Our approach highlights the combinatorial richness underlying the star product of symmetric functions.
Berele row-insertion and quantum symmetric pairs
The Berele row-insertion is a symplectic analogue of the Schensted row-insertion. In the present paper, we provide it with a representation theoretical interpretation via the quantum symmetric pairs of type $A\mathrm{II}$. As applications, we lift Berele's Robinson--Schensted correspondence and Kobayashi--Matsumura's Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK for short) correspondence to isomorphisms of representations over a quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebra, and establish the dual RSK correspondence of type $A\mathrm{II}$.
Curves in projective space and RSK
The geometric Tevelev degrees of projective space enumerate general, pointed algebraic curves interpolating through the maximal possible number of points. Previous work expresses these invariants in terms of Schubert calculus. Extending ideas of Gillespie--Reimer-Berg, we use the RSK correspondence to give a positive interpretation of these counts in terms of the combinatorics of words.
A generalization of RSK to $d$-complete posets
The hook length formula for $d$-complete posets expresses the number of linear extensions of a $d$-complete poset $P$ in terms of hooks of $P$. It generalizes the usual hook length formula for standard Young tableaux, as well as hook length formulas for shifted Young tableaux and trees. We give a new proof of the hook length formula for $d$-complete posets which is elementary and purely combinatorial. Our approach is to define a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth bijection for $d$-complete posets, which may be of independent interest.
Kronecker Coefficients, Crystals, and Bitableaux
What might a combinatorial interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients even look like? We introduce a class of combinatorial objects called bitableaux, which we believe are a natural candidate, and we formulate a purely combinatorial problem which if resolved would give a combinatorial interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients. We make some partial progress on this problem -- enough to extract a combinatorial expansion for a Kronecker product of Schur functions in the monomial basis. We also explain how in this framework finding a combinatorial interpretation for Kronecker coefficients can be thought of as looking for a generalization of the RSK and dual RSK insertion algorithms.
Partition algebras as monoid algebras
Wilcox has considered a twisted semigroup algebra structure on the partition algebra $\mathbb{C}A_k(n)$, but it appears that there has not previously been any known basis that gives $\mathbb{C}A_k(n)$ the structure of a "non-twisted" semigroup algebra or a monoid algebra. This motivates the following problem, for the non-degenerate case whereby $n \in \mathbb{C} \setminus \{ 0, 1, \ldots, 2 k - 2 \}$ so that $ \mathbb{C}A_k(n)$ is semisimple. How could a basis $M_{k} = M$ of $ \mathbb{C}A_k(n)$ be constructed so that $M$ is closed under the multiplicative operation on $\mathbb{C}A_k(n)$, in such a way so that $M$ is a monoid under this operation, and how could a product rule for elements in $M$ be defined in an explicit and combinatorial way in terms of partition diagrams? We construct a basis $M$ of the desired form using Halverson and Ram's matrix unit construction for partition algebras, Benkart and Halverson's bijection between vacillating tableaux and set-partition tableaux, an analogue given by Colmenarejo et al. for partition diagrams of the RSK correspondence, and a variant of a result due to Hewitt and Zuckerman characterizing finite-dimensional semisimple algebras that are isomorphic to semigroup algebras.
Cauchy identities for Grothendieck polynomials and a dual RSK correspondence through pipe dreams
The Cauchy identity gives a recipe for decomposing a double Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_w(x;y)$ as a sum of products $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_v(x)\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_u(y)$ of single Grothendieck polynomials. Combinatorially, this identity suggests the existence of a weight-preserving bijection between certain families of diagrams called pipe dreams. In this paper, we provide such a bijection using an algorithm called pipe dream rectification. In turn, rectification is built from a new class of flow operators which themselves exhibit a surprising symmetry. Finally, we examine other applications of rectification including an insertion algorithm on pipe dreams which recovers a variant of the dual RSK correspondence.
RSK correspondence for King tableaux with Berele insertion
We establish a bijective RSK correspondence of type C for King tableaux with Berele insertion as a reformulation of Sundaram's correspondence (1986). For its $Q$-symbol, we make use of semistandard oscillating tableaux (SSOT), a new object which Lee (2025) introduced. Further, we show hidden duality of Cauchy identity through RSK correspondences of type A and C. Finally, we prove that the generating function of SSOT is symmetric by constructing a new sort of Bender-Knuth involution.
RSK linear operators and the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp curve
Stelzer and Yong (2024) studied the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence as a linear operator on the coordinate ring of matrices. They showed that this operator is block diagonal and conjectured that, in a special block, most diagonal entries vanish. We establish this conjecture by identifying these zeros with certain Schensted insertion interactions and analyzing them probabilistically using the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp Limit Shape Theorem.
Zigzags, contingency tables, and quotient rings
Let $\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}$ be a $k \times p$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables. Given two weak compositions $α,β\models_0 n$ of lengths $\ell(α) = k$ and $\ell(β) = p$, we study the ideal $I_{α,β} \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]$ generated by row sums, column sums, monomials in row $i$ of degree $> α_i$, and monomials in column $j$ of degree $> β_j$. We prove results connecting algebraic properties of the quotient ring $R_{α,β} := \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]/I_{α,β}$ with the set $C_{α,β}$ of $α,β$-contingency tables. The standard monomial basis of $R_{α,β}$ with respect to a diagonal term order is encoded by the matrix-ball avatar of the RSK correspondence. We describe the Hilbert series of $R_{α,β}$ in terms of a zigzag statistic on contingency tables. The ring $R_{α,β}$ carries a graded action of the product $\mathrm{Stab}(α) \times \mathrm{Stab}(β)$ of symmetry groups of the sequences $α= (α_1,\dots,α_k)$ and $β= (β_1,\dots,β_p)$; we describe how to calculate the isomorphism type of this graded action. Our analysis regards the set $C_{α,β}$ as a locus in the affine space $\mathrm{Mat}_{k \times p}(\mathbb{F})$ and applies orbit harmonics to this locus.
Distinguished filtrations of the $0$-Hecke modules for dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions
Let $α$ range over the set of compositions. Dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions $\mathfrak{S}_α^*$, introduced by Berg, Bergeron, Saliola, Serrano, and Zabrocki, provide a quasisymmetric analogue of Schur functions. They also constructed an indecomposable $0$-Hecke module $\mathcal{V}_α$ whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is $\mathfrak{S}_α^*$. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{V}_α$ admits a distinguished filtration with respect to the basis of Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. This result offers a novel representation-theoretic interpretation of the positive expansion of $\mathfrak{S}_α^*$ in the basis of Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. A key tool in our proof is Mason's analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm, for which we establish a version of Green's theorem. As an unexpected byproduct of our investigation, we construct an indecomposable $0$-Hecke module $\mathbf{Y}_α$ whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is the Young quasisymmetric Schur function $\hat{\mathscr{S}}_α$. Further properties of this module are also investigated. And, by applying a suitable automorphism twist to this module, we obtain an indecomposable $0$-Hecke module whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is the quasisymmetric Schur function $\mathscr{S}_α$.
Lusztig $\mathbf{a}$-functions for quasiparabolic sets
Kazhdan and Lusztig introduce the $W$-graphs to describe the cells and molecules corresponding to the Coxeter groups. Building on this foundation, Lusztig defines the a-funtion to classify the cells, as well as the molecules. Marberg then generalizes Kazhdan and Lusztig's $W$-graphs, using fixed-point-free involutions as their indices. The molecules of the two new $S_n$-graphs are then classified via two correspondence similar to RSK correspondence by Marberg and me. In this paper, we define an analogue of the Lusztig a-function and finish the classification of cells by proving that every molecule in the $S_n$-graphs is indeed a cell.
RSK as a linear operator
The Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence (RSK) is a bijection between nonnegative integer matrices and pairs of Young tableaux. We study it as a linear operator on the coordinate ring of matrices, proving results about its diagonalizability, eigenvalues, trace, and determinant. Our criterion for diagonalizability involves the $ADE$ classification of Dynkin diagrams, as well as the diagram for $E_9$.
Exotic Spaltenstein varieties
We define a new family of algebraic varieties, called exotic Spaltenstein varieties. These generalise the notion of Spaltenstein varieties (which are the partial flag analogues to classical Springer fibres) to the case of exotic Springer fibres. We show that, for self-adjoint nilpotent endomorphisms of order two, the top-dimensional irreducible components are in bijection with semi-standard Young bitableaux, via constructing an explicit map. Moreover, we are able to give a combinatorial formula for this top dimension. We conjecture that this description of the irreducible components holds for nilpotent endomorphisms of arbitrary order. Finally, we mention some connections to the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.
An extended generalization of RSK correspondence via $A$ type quiver representations
Let $λ=(λ_1 \geqslant \ldots \geqslant λ_k > 0)$. For any $c$ Coxeter element of $\mathfrak{S}_{λ_1+k-1}$, we construct a bijection from fillings of $λ$ to reverse plane partitions. We recover two previous generalizations of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence for particular choices of Coxeter element depending on $λ$: one based on the work of, among others, Burge, Hillman, Grassl, Knuth, and uniformly presented by Gansner; the other developed by Garver, Partrias, and Thomas, and independently by Dauvergne, called Scrambled RSK. Our results in this paper develop the combinatorial consequence of our previous work of type $A_{λ_1+k}$ quivers.
Cumulants of threshold for Schensted row insertion into random tableaux
Schensted row insertion is a fundamental component of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) algorithm, a powerful tool in combinatorics and representation theory. This study examines the insertion of a deterministic number into a random tableau of a specified shape, focusing on the relationship between the value of the inserted number and the position of the new box created by the Schensted row insertion. Specifically, for a given tableau and a point on its boundary, we consider the threshold that separates values which, if inserted, would result in the new box being created above the point from those that would result in a new box below. We analyze a random tableau of fixed shape and study the corresponding random threshold value. Explicit combinatorial formulas for the cumulants of this random variable are provided, expressed in terms of Kerov's transition measure of the diagram. These combinatorial formulas involve summing over non-crossing alternating trees. As a first application of these results, we demonstrate that for random Young tableaux of prescribed large shape, the rightmost entry in the first row converges in distribution to an explicit Gaussian distribution.
On the Correspondence Between Integer Sequences and Vacillating Tableaux
A fundamental identity in the representation theory of the partition algebra is $n^k = \sum_λ f^λm_k^λ$ for $n \geq 2k$, where $λ$ ranges over integer partitions of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of vacillating tableaux of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Using a combination of RSK insertion and jeu de taquin, Halverson and Lewandowski constructed a bijection $DI_n^k$ that maps each integer sequence in $[n]^k$ to a pair of tableaux of the same shape, where one is a standard Young tableau and the other is a vacillating tableau. In this paper, we study the fine properties of Halverson and Lewandowski's bijection and explore the correspondence between integer sequences and the vacillating tableaux via the map $DI_n^k$ for general integers $n$ and $k$. In particular, we characterize the integer sequences $\boldsymbol{i}$ whose corresponding shape, $λ$, in the image $DI_n^k(\boldsymbol{i})$, satisfies $λ_1 = n$ or $λ_1 = n-k$.
