The ABCT Variety $V(3,n)$ is a Positive Geometry
The ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ is the image closure of the rational Veronese map from the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ to the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,n)$. It was studied by Arkani-Hamed--Bourjaily--Cachazo--Trnka in the context of tree-level scattering amplitudes arising in planar $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and Witten's twistor string theory. From this perspective, $V(3,n)$ is conjectured to be a positive geometry by Lam. In this paper, we study the combinatorial and algebraic geometry aspects of $V(3,n)$ and its subvarieties induced by iteratively taking analytic boundaries of the totally nonnegative part. We interpret these subvarieties as point configurations on $\mathbb{P}^2$ by the Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence. We construct a top-degree meromorphic form on $V(3,n)$ and show that it is a positive geometry, proving Lam's conjecture.
On the codimension of permanental varieties
In this article, we study permanental varieties, i.e. varieties defined by the vanishing of permanents of fixed size of a generic matrix. Permanents and their varieties play an important, and sometimes poorly understood, role in combinatorics. However, there are essentially no geometric results about them in the literature, in very sharp contrast to the well-behaved and ubiquitous case of determinants and minors. Motivated by the study of the singular locus of the permanental hypersurface, we focus on the codimension of these varieties. We introduce a $\mathbb C^{*}$-action on matrices and prove a number of results. In particular, we improve a lower bound on the codimension of the aforementioned singular locus established by von zur Gathen in 1987.
Quasihomomorphisms from the integers into Hamming metrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
A function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Q}^n$ is a $c$-quasihomomorphism if the Hamming distance between $f(x+y)$ and $f(x)+f(y)$ is at most $c$ for all $x,y \in \mathbb{Z}$. We show that any $c$-quasihomomorphism has distance at most some constant $C(c)$ to an actual group homomorphism; here $C(c)$ depends only on $c$ and not on $n$ or $f$. This gives a positive answer to a special case of a question posed by Kazhdan and Ziegler.

A note on the simultaneous Waring rank of monomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the complex simultaneous Waring rank for collections of monomials. For general collections we provide a lower bound, whereas for special collections we provide a formula for the simultaneous Waring rank. Our approach is algebraic and combinatorial. We give an application to ranks of binomials and maximal simultaneous ranks. Moreover, we include an appendix of scripts written in the algebra software Macaulay2 to experiment with simultaneous ranks.

Phylogenetic complexity of the Kimura 3-parameter model
In algebraic statistics, the Kimura 3-parameter model is one of the most interesting and classical phylogenetic models. We prove that the ideals associated to this model are generated in degree four, confirming a conjecture by Sturmfels and Sullivant.

Finite phylogenetic complexity and combinatorics of tables

We prove that the phylogenetic complexity -- an invariant introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant -- of any finite abelian group is finite.
The poset of proper divisibility
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the partially ordered set $P(a_1,\ldots, a_n)$ of all multidegrees $(b_1,\dots,b_n)$ of monomials $x_1^{b_1}\cdots x_n^{b_n}$ which properly divide $x_1^{a_1}\cdots x_n^{a_n}$. We prove that the order complex $Δ(P(a_1,\dots,a_n))$ of $P(a_1,\ldots a_n)$ is (non-pure) shellable, by showing that the order dual of $P(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ is $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable. Along the way, we exhibit the poset $P(4,4)$ as a new example of a poset with $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable order dual that is not $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable itself. For $n = 2$ we provide the rank of all homology groups of the order complex $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$. Furthermore, we give a succinct formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$.
