Schedules and the Delta Conjecture

In a recent preprint, Carlsson and Oblomkov (2018) obtain a long sought after monomial basis for the ring $\operatorname{DR}_n$ of diagonal coinvariants. Their basis is closely related to the "schedules" formula for the Hilbert series of $\operatorname{DR}_n$ which was conjectured by the first author and Loehr (2005) and first proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2018), as a consequence of their proof of the famous Shuffle Conjecture. In this article we obtain a schedules formula for the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture, a conjecture introduced by the first author, Remmel and Wilson (2018) which contains the Shuffle Conjecture as a special case. Motivated by the Carlsson-Oblomkov basis for $\operatorname{DR}_n$ and our Delta schedules formula, we introduce a (conjectural) basis for the module $\operatorname{SDR}_n$ of super-diagonal coinvariants, an $S_n$ module generalizing $\operatorname{DR}_n$ introduced recently by Zabrocki (2019) which conjecturally corresponds to the Delta Conjecture.
$e$-Positivity Results and Conjectures
In a 2016 ArXiv posting F. Bergeron listed a variety of symmetric functions $G[X;q]$ with the property that $G[X;1+q]$ is $e$-positive. A large subvariety of his examples could be explained by the conjecture that the Dyck path LLT polynomials exhibit the same phenomenon. In this paper we list the results of computer explorations which suggest that other examples exhibit the same phenomenon. We prove two of the resulting conjectures and propose algorithms that would prove several of our conjectures. In writing this paper we have learned that similar findings have been independently discovered by Per Alexandersson.
Real-rootedness of variations of Eulerian polynomials
The binomial Eulerian polynomials, introduced by Postnikov, Reiner, and Williams, are $γ$-positive polynomials and can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes. Recently, Athanasiadis studied analogs of these polynomials for colored permutations. In this paper, we generalize them to $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences and prove that these new polynomials have only real roots by the method of interlacing polynomials. Three applications of this result are presented. The first one is to prove the real-rootedness of binomial Eulerian polynomials, which confirms a conjecture of Ma, Ma, and Yeh. The second one is to prove that the symmetric decomposition of binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations is real-rooted. Thirdly, our polynomials for certain $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences are shown to admit a similar geometric interpretation related to edgewise subdivisions of simplexes.
Some conjectures on the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials

We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

Hall-Littlewood expansions of Schur delta operators at $t = 0$
For any Schur function $s_ν$, the associated {\em delta operator} $Δ'_{s_ν}$ is a linear operator on the ring of symmetric functions which has the modified Macdonald polynomials as an eigenbasis. When $ν= (1^{n-1})$ is a column of length $n-1$, the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n$ appears in the Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson-Mellit. More generally, when $ν= (1^{k-1})$ is any column the polynomial $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ is the symmetric function side of the Delta Conjecture of Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We give an expansion of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in the dual Hall-Littlewood basis for any partition $ν$. The Delta Conjecture at $t = 0$ was recently proven by Garsia-Haglund-Remmel-Yoo; our methods give a new proof of this result. We give an algebraic interpretation of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in terms of a $\mathrm{Hom}$-space.
A generalized major index statistic on tableaux
We extend the family of statistics maj_d, introduced for permutations by Kadell (1985), to standard Young tableaux. At one extreme, we have the traditional Major index statistic maj_1 for tableaux. At the other end, maj_n = inv, the inversion statistic introduced by Haglund and Stevens (2006). This is answers a question of Assaf (2008), who defined maj_2 and maj_3 for tableaux.
Lecture notes on the Carlsson-Mellit proof of the shuffle conjecture
This note is based on the original proof of the shuffle conjecture by Carlsson and Mellit (arXiv:1508.06239, version 2), which seems to be too concise for the combinatorial community. James Haglund spent a semester to check through the proof line by line and took explicit note. Guoce Xin was asked by Adriano Garsia to elaborate the proof. The whole paper is thoroughly checked and filled in with details. Section 1 and the abstract of the original paper is included. Section 2 is rewritten for clarity. Other sections are filled with detailed proof and computation. We hope this note is accessible to graduate students.

We express the integral form Macdonald polynomials as a weighted sum of Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic quasisymmetric functions of certain graphs. Then we use known expansions of these chromatic quasisymmetric functions into Schur and power sum symmetric functions to provide Schur and power sum formulas for the integral form Macdonald polynomials. Since the (integral form) Jack polynomials are a specialization of integral form Macdonald polynomials, we obtain analogous formulas for Jack polynomials as corollaries.

The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The invariant ideal $I_n$ is the ideal generated by all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. The quotient $R_n = \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_n}$ is called the coinvariant algebra. The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ has received a great deal of study in algebraic and geometric combinatorics. We introduce a generalization $I_{n,k} \subseteq \mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ of the ideal $I_n$ indexed by two positive integers $k \leq n$. The corresponding quotient $R_{n,k} := \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_{n,k}}$ carries a graded action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and specializes to $R_n$ when $k = n$. We generalize many of the nice properties of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$. In particular, we describe the Hilbert series of $R_{n,k}$, give extensions of the Artin and Garsia-Stanton monomial bases of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$, determine the reduced Gröbner basis for $I_{n,k}$ with respect to the lexicographic monomial order, and describe the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$. Just as the combinatorics of $R_n$ are controlled by permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we will show that the combinatorics of $R_{n,k}$ are controlled by ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ with $k$ blocks. The {\em Delta Conjecture} of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the theory of diagonal coinvariants. We will show that the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$ is (up to a minor twist) the $t = 0$ specialization of the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture. It remains an open problem to give a bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $V_{n,k}$ whose Frobenius image is even conjecturally equal to any of the expressions in the Delta Conjecture; our module $R_{n,k}$ solves this problem in the specialization $t = 0$.

We conjecture two combinatorial interpretations for the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k} e_n$, where $Δ_f$ is an eigenoperator for the modified Macdonald polynomials defined by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. Both interpretations can be seen as generalizations of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Remmel, Loehr, and Ulyanov, which was proved recently by Carlsson and Mellit. We show how previous work of the third author on Tesler matrices and ordered set partitions can be used to verify several cases of our conjectures. Furthermore, we use a reciprocity identity and LLT polynomials to prove another case. Finally, we show how our conjectures inspire 4-variable generalizations of the Catalan numbers, extending work of Garsia, Haiman, and the first author.

Let A be an n-by-n matrix of real numbers which are weakly decreasing down each column, Z_n = diag(z_1,..., z_n) a diagonal matrix of indeterminates, and J_n the n-by-n matrix of all ones. We prove that per(J_nZ_n+A) is stable in the z_i, resolving a recent conjecture of Haglund and Visontai. This immediately implies that per(zJ_n+A) is a polynomial in z with only real roots, an open conjecture of Haglund, Ono, and Wagner from 1999. Other applications include a multivariate stable Eulerian polynomial, a new proof of Grace's apolarity theorem and new permanental inequalities.
A compositional shuffle conjecture specifying touch points of the Dyck path

We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the algebraic combinatorial theory of $q,t$-Catalan sequences and we prove a number of identities involving these functions.

In the prequel to this paper, we showed how results of Mason involving a new combinatorial formula for polynomials that are now known as Demazure atoms (characters of quotients of Demazure modules, called standard bases by Lascoux and Schutzenberger) could be used to define a new basis for the ring of quasisymmetric functions we call Quasisymmetric Schur functions (QS functions for short). In this paper we develop the combinatorics of these polynomials futher, by showing that the product of a Schur function and a Demazure atom has a positive expansion in terms of Demazure atoms. As a by-product, using the fact that both a QS function and a Demazure character have explicit expressions as a positive sum of atoms, we obtain the expansion of a product of a Schur function with a QS function (Demazure character) as a positive sum of QS functions (Demazure characters). Our formula for the coefficients in the expansion of a product of a Demazure character and a Schur function into Demazure characters is similar to known results and includes in particular the famous Littlewood-Richardson rule for the expansion of a product of Schur functions in terms of the Schur basis.
