Algebraic Voting Theory & Representations of $S_m \wr S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of selecting an $n$-member committee made up of one of $m$ candidates from each of $n$ distinct departments. Using an algebraic approach, we analyze positional voting procedures, including the Borda count, as $\mathbb{Q}S_m \wr S_n$-module homomorphisms. In particular, we decompose the spaces of voter preferences and election results into simple $\mathbb{Q}S_m \wr S_n$-submodules and apply Schur's Lemma to determine the structure of the information lost in the voting process. We conclude with a voting paradox result, showing that for sufficiently different weighting vectors, applying the associated positional voting procedures to the same set of votes can yield arbitrarily different election outcomes.

Analyzing Boltzmann Samplers for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Dirichlet Generating Functions
Published in Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Analytic Algorithmics and Combinatorics (ANALCO 2018) 107-117 • View PublicationBIB
Boltzmann sampling is commonly used to uniformly sample objects of a particular size from large combinatorial sets. For this technique to be effective, one needs to prove that (1) the sampling procedure is efficient and (2) objects of the desired size are generated with sufficiently high probability. We use this approach to give a provably efficient sampling algorithm for a class of weighted integer partitions related to Bose-Einstein condensation from statistical physics. Our sampling algorithm is a probabilistic interpretation of the ordinary generating function for these objects, derived from the symbolic method of analytic combinatorics. Using the Khintchine-Meinardus probabilistic method to bound the rejection rate of our Boltzmann sampler through singularity analysis of Dirichlet generating functions, we offer an alternative approach to analyze Boltzmann samplers for objects with multiplicative structure.

On sampling graphical Markov models
We consider sampling and enumeration problems for Markov equivalence classes. We create and analyze a Markov chain for uniform random sampling on the DAGs inside a Markov equivalence class. Though the worst case is exponentially slow mixing, we find a condition on the Markov equivalence class for polynomial time mixing. We also investigate the ratio of Markov equivalence classes to DAGs and a Markov chain of He, Jia, and Yu for random sampling of sparse Markov equivalence classes.

Cutoff for random to random card shuffle
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use the eigenvalues of the random to random card shuffle to prove a sharp upper bound for the total variation mixing time. Combined with the lower bound due to Subag, we prove that this walk exhibits cutoff at $\frac{3}{4} n \log n - \frac{1}{4}n\log\log{n}$ with window of order $n$, answering a conjecture of Diaconis.

A random walk on the symmetric group generated by random involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The involution walk is the random walk on $S_n$ generated by involutions with a binomially distributed with parameter $1-p$ number of $2$-cycles. This is a parallelization of the transposition walk. The involution walk is shown in this paper to mix for $\frac{1}{2} \leq p \leq 1$ fixed, $n$ sufficiently large in between $\log_{1/p}(n)$ steps and $\log_{2/(1+p)}(n)$ steps. The paper introduces a new technique for finding eigenvalues of random walks on the symmetric group generated by many conjugacy classes using the character polynomial for the characters of the representations of the symmetric group. Monotonicity relations used in the bound also give after sufficient time the likelihood order, the asymptotic order from most likely to least likely permutation. The walk was introduced to study a conjecture about a random walk on the unitary group from the information theory of black holes.

Likelihood Orders for some Random Walks on the Symmetric Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several cycle lexicographical orders are found to describe the relative likelihood of elements of the random walks on the symmetric group generated by the conjugacy classes of transpositions, 3-cycles, and n-cycles. Spectral analysis finds sufficient time for the orders to hold. This partially answers a conjecture that the n-cycles are the least likely elements of the transposition walk on the symmetric group. A likelihood order contributes to understanding the total variation distance and separation distance for a random walk.
