Sharp Fuss-Catalan thresholds in graph bootstrap percolation
We study graph bootstrap percolation on the Erdős-Rényi random graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$. For all $r \ge 5$, we locate the sharp $K_r$-percolation threshold $p_c \sim (γn)^{-1/λ}$, solving a problem of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris. The case $r=3$ is the classical graph connectivity threshold, and the threshold for $r=4$ was found using strong connections with the well-studied $2$-neighbor dynamics from statistical physics. When $r \ge 5$, such connections break down, and the process exhibits much richer behavior. The constants $λ=λ(r)$ and $γ=γ(r)$ in $p_c$ are determined by a class of $\left({r\choose2}-1\right)$-ary tree-like graphs, which we call $K_r$-tree witness graphs. These graphs are associated with the most efficient ways of adding a new edge in the $K_r$-dynamics, and they can be counted using the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Also, in the subcritical setting, we determine the asymptotic number of edges added to ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$, showing that the edge density increases only by a constant factor, whose value we identify.

$H$-percolation with a random $H$
Published in Electron. Commun. Probab. 29, Paper No. 33, 5 p. (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In $H$-percolation, we start with an Erdős--Rényi graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ and then iteratively add edges that complete copies of $H$. The process percolates if all edges missing from ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ are eventually added. We find the critical threshold $p_c$ when $H={\mathcal G}_{k,1/2}$ is uniformly random, solving a problem of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris.

Sharp bound on the threshold metric dimension of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
The threshold-$k$ metric dimension ($\mathrm{Tmd}_k$) of a graph is the minimum number of sensors -- a subset of the vertex set -- needed to uniquely identify any vertex in the graph, solely based on its distances from the sensors, when the measuring radius of a sensor is $k$. We give a sharp lower bound on the $\mathrm{Tmd}_k$ of trees, depending only on the number of vertices $n$ and the measuring radius $k$. This sharp lower bound grows linearly in $n$ with leading coefficient $3/(k^2+4k+3+\mathbf{1}\{k\equiv 1\pmod 3\})$, disproving earlier conjectures by Tillquist et al. in arXiv:2106.14314 that suspected $n/(\lfloor k^2/4\rfloor +2k)$ as main order term. We provide a construction for the largest possible trees with a given $\mathrm{Tmd}_k$ value. The proof that our optimal construction cannot be improved relies on edge-rewiring procedures of arbitrary (suboptimal) trees with arbitrary resolving sets, which reveal the structure of how small subsets of sensors measure and resolve certain areas in the tree that we call the attraction of those sensors. The notion of `attraction of sensors' might be useful in other contexts beyond trees to solve related problems. We also provide an improved lower bound on the $\mathrm{Tmd}_k$ of arbitrary trees that takes into account the structural properties of the tree, in particular, the number and length of simple paths of degree-two vertices terminating in leaf vertices. This bound complements arXiv:2106.14314, where only trees without degree-two vertices were considered, except the simple case of a single path.

Weakly saturated random graphs
Published in Random Struct. Algorithms 65, No. 1, 131-148 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
As introduced by Bollobás, a graph $G$ is weakly $H$-saturated if the complete graph $K_n$ is obtained by iteratively completing copies of $H$ minus an edge. For all graphs $H$, we obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the critical threshold $p_c$, at which point the Erdős--Rényi graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ is likely to be weakly $H$-saturated. We also prove an upper bound for $p_c$, for all $H$ which are, in a sense, strictly balanced. In particular, we improve the upper bound by Balogh, Bollob{á}s and Morris for $H=K_r$, and we conjecture that this is sharp up to constants.

Noise sensitivity in bootstrap percolation
Answering questions of Itai Benjamini, we show that the event of complete occupation in 2-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the d-dimensional box [n]^d, for d\geq 2, at its critical initial density p_c(n), is noise sensitive, while in k-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the d-regular random graph G_{n,d}, for 2\leq k\leq d-2, it is insensitive. Many open problems remain.
