On the $d$-rigidity phase transition in random graphs
We study generic $d$-dimensional rigidity in sparse random graphs. Our main result is that for every $d\ge 2$, the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G\sim G(n,c/n)$ undergoes a $d$-rigidity phase transition at the known, explicit, $d$-orientability threshold $c_d$: If $c<c_d$, then $G$ is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) independent in the generic $d$-rigidity matroid. Moreover, in this regime $G$ has no linear-size rigidity components: it contains no induced $d$-rigid subgraphs with more than $3$ vertices, and the largest clique in its $d$-rigidity closure has size at most $o(\sqrt n)$. If $c>c_d$, then the $d$-rigidity closure of $G$ a.a.s. has a giant clique of linear size, which contains all but at most $o(n)$ vertices of the $((d+1)+d)$-core of the graph. We also give a sharp asymptotic estimate for the generic $d$-rigidity rank of $G$ in the supercritical regime. More generally, we compute, up to a $1+o(1)$ factor, the generic $d$-rigidity rank of random graphs with a given degree distribution. For example, we show that the uniform $n$-vertex $k$-regular graph a.a.s. has rank $\min(k/2,d)n+o(n).$ Our approach is to estimate the rigidity rank of a random graph from its Galton--Watson local weak limit, using a parameter that we call {\em local flexibility}.
Sharp Fuss-Catalan thresholds in graph bootstrap percolation
We study graph bootstrap percolation on the Erdős-Rényi random graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$. For all $r \ge 5$, we locate the sharp $K_r$-percolation threshold $p_c \sim (γn)^{-1/λ}$, solving a problem of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris. The case $r=3$ is the classical graph connectivity threshold, and the threshold for $r=4$ was found using strong connections with the well-studied $2$-neighbor dynamics from statistical physics. When $r \ge 5$, such connections break down, and the process exhibits much richer behavior. The constants $λ=λ(r)$ and $γ=γ(r)$ in $p_c$ are determined by a class of $\left({r\choose2}-1\right)$-ary tree-like graphs, which we call $K_r$-tree witness graphs. These graphs are associated with the most efficient ways of adding a new edge in the $K_r$-dynamics, and they can be counted using the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Also, in the subcritical setting, we determine the asymptotic number of edges added to ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$, showing that the edge density increases only by a constant factor, whose value we identify.

Local limits of determinantal processes
Let $H_n$ be the row space of a signed adjacency matrix of a $C_4$-free bipartite bi-regular graph in which one part has degree $d(n)\to\infty$ and the other part has degree $k+1$ where $k\geq 1$ is a fixed integer. We show that the local limit as $n\to \infty$ of the determinantal process corresponding to the orthogonal projection on $H_n$ is a variant of a Poisson$(k)$ branching process conditioned to survive. This setup covers a wide class of determinantal processes such as uniform spanning trees, Kalai's determinantal hypertrees, hyperforests in regular cell complexes, discrete Grassmanians, incidence matroids and more, as long as their degree tends to $\infty$.

The typical algebraic shifting of a surface
We initiate a statistical study of Kalai's exterior algebraic shifting, focusing on concentration phenomena for random triangulations of a fixed space. First, for a uniform $n$-vertex refinement of any given graph $G$, we show that asymptotically almost-surely (a.a.s.) its exterior algebraic shifting is an explicit shifted graph depending only on $n$ and the Betti numbers of $G$. Next, for any given compact connected Riemannian surface $S$, sample $n$ points independently at random according to the volume measure, and consider the resulted a.a.s. unique Delaunay triangulation. We prove that a.a.s. its exterior algebraic shifting is an explicit shifted complex depending only on $n$ and the genus of $S$. In both results the expected shifted complex is a homology lex-segment complex, a notion we define combinatorially and characterize numerically a lá Björner-Kalai. As a tool to prove the result on surfaces, we prove a universality result on edge contractions: for every fixed surface triangulation $K$, every dense enough point set in the surface yields a Delaunay triangulation that edge contracts to $K$.

Cocycle stability in permutations of random simplicial complexes
Finding a non-sofic hyperbolic group will resolve two major problems in geometric group theory: Are there non sofic groups? Are there non residually finite hyperbolic groups? In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic approach to this problem, based on the cocycle stability in permutations of random 2-dimensional Linial-Meshulam complexes. Specifically, we study their cocycle stability rate, which measures how far cochains with small coboundaries are from being cocycles. Our main contribution is the following: If, in a middle triangle density range, these random complexes typically have a linear cocycle stability rate, then there exists a non-sofic hyperbolic group. Our proof method is inspired by a well known fact about the non local testability of Sipser-Spielman expander codes.
When does a tree activate the random graph?
Let $F$ and $G$ be two graphs. A spanning subgraph $H$ of $G$ is called weakly $F$-saturated if one can add to $H$ the edges of $G \setminus H$ in some order, so that whenever a new edge is added, a new copy of $F$ is formed. Obtaining lower bounds for the minimum size $\mathrm{wsat}(G,F)$ of such an $H$ is a classical problem in extremal combinatorics. In particular, in the past 40 years, various algebraic tools have been developed to prove lower bounds on the weak saturation number $\mathrm{wsat}(G,F)$. Our paper uncovers a new connection of weak saturation to topology of clique complexes, that allows to prove tight lower bounds in some cases when the algebraic tools are not efficient. It is easy to see that the smallest $K_3$-saturating graphs in $K_n$ are trees, thus $\mathrm{wsat}(K_n,K_3)=n-1$. In 2017, Korándi and Sudakov proved that this is also the case in dense random graphs $G\sim G_{n,p}$, $p=\mathrm{const}\in(0,1)$, and posed the question of determining the smallest $p$ for which $G_{n,p}$ contains a $K_3$-saturating tree with high probability. Using the new topological connection, we show that this critical $p$ is of order $n^{-1/3-o(1)}$. Inspired by Gromov's local-to-global principle for hyperbolic groups, we further develop our topological approach and determine the critical probability up to a constant factor, for trees with diameter at most $n^{c}$, for some $c>0$. The new connection also enables us to improve the best known upper bound on the threshold probability for simple connectivity of the 2-dimensional clique complex of $G_{n,p}$, due to Kahle.

On the $k$-volume rigidity of a simplicial complex in $\mathbb{R}^d$
We define a generic rigidity matroid for $k$-volumes of a simplicial complex in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and prove that for $2\leq k \leq d-1$ it has the same rank as the classical generic $d$-rigidity matroid on the same vertex set (namely, the case $k=1$). This is in contrast with the $k=d$ case, previously studied by Lubetzky and Peled, which presents a different behavior. We conjecture a characterization for the bases of this matroid in terms of $d$-rigidity of the $1$-skeleton of the complex and a combinatorial Hall condition on incidences of edges in $k$-faces.

On the Rigidity of Random Graphs in high-dimensional spaces
We study the maximum dimension $d=d(n,p)$ for which an Erdős-Rényi $G(n,p)$ random graph is $d$-rigid. Our main results reveal two different regimes of rigidity in $G(n,p)$ separated at $p_c=C_*\log n/n,~C_*=2/(1-\log 2)$ -- the point where the graph's minimum degree exceeds half its average degree. We show that if $p < (1-\varepsilon)p_c $, then $d(n,p)$ is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) equal to the minimum degree of $G(n,p)$. In contrast, if $p_c \leq p = o(n^{-1/2}) $ then $d(n,p) $ is a.a.s. equal to $(1/2 + o(1))np$. The second result confirms, in this regime, a conjecture of Krivelevich, Lew, and Michaeli.

Noise Sensitivity of the Minimum Spanning Tree of the Complete Graph
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 33 (2024) 708-723 • View PublicationBIB
We study the noise sensitivity of the minimum spanning tree (MST) of the $n$-vertex complete graph when edges are assigned independent random weights. It is known that when the graph distance is rescaled by $n^{1/3}$ and vertices are given a uniform measure, the MST converges in distribution in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov (GHP) topology. We prove that if the weight of each edge is resampled independently with probability $\varepsilon\gg n^{-1/3}$, then the pair of rescaled minimum spanning trees -- before and after the noise -- converges in distribution to independent random spaces. Conversely, if $\varepsilon\ll n^{-1/3}$, the GHP distance between the rescaled trees goes to $0$ in probability. This implies the noise sensitivity and stability for every property of the MST that corresponds to a continuity set of the random limit. The noise threshold of $n^{-1/3}$ coincides with the critical window of the Erdős-Rényi random graphs. In fact, these results follow from an analog theorem we prove regarding the minimum spanning forest of critical random graphs.

Rigidity expander graphs
Jordán and Tanigawa recently introduced the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity $a_d(G)$ of a graph $G$. This is a quantitative measure of the $d$-dimensional rigidity of $G$ which generalizes the well-studied notion of spectral expansion of graphs. We present a new lower bound for $a_d(G)$ defined in terms of the spectral expansion of certain subgraphs of $G$ associated with a partition of its vertices into $d$ parts. In particular, we obtain a new sufficient condition for the rigidity of a graph $G$. As a first application, we prove the existence of an infinite family of $k$-regular $d$-rigidity-expander graphs for every $d\ge 2$ and $k\ge 2d+1$. Conjecturally, no such family of $2d$-regular graphs exists. Second, we show that $a_d(K_n)\geq \frac{1}{2}\left\lfloor\frac{n}{d}\right\rfloor$, which we conjecture to be essentially tight. In addition, we study the extremal values $a_d(G)$ attained if $G$ is a minimally $d$-rigid graph.

Volume rigidity and algebraic shifting
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the generic volume rigidity of $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complexes in $\mathbb R^{d-1}$, and show that the volume rigidity of a complex can be identified in terms of its exterior shifting. In addition, we establish the volume rigidity of triangulations of several $2$-dimensional surfaces and prove that, in all dimensions $>1$, volume rigidity is {\em not} characterized by a corresponding hypergraph sparsity property.

On the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity $a_d(G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$, introduced by Jordán and Tanigawa, is a quantitative measure of the $d$-dimensional rigidity of $G$ that is defined in terms of the eigenvalues of stiffness matrices (which are analogues of the graph Laplacian) associated to mappings of the vertex set $V$ into $\mathbb{R}^d$. Here, we analyze the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity of complete graphs. In particular, we show that, for $d\geq 3$, $a_d(K_{d+1})=1$, and for $n\geq 2d$, \[ \left\lceil\frac{n}{2d}\right\rceil-2d+1\leq a_d(K_n) \leq \frac{2n}{3(d-1)}+\frac{1}{3}. \]

Sharp threshold for rigidity of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Erdős-Rényi evolution of random graphs, where a new uniformly distributed edge is added to the graph in every step. For every fixed $d\ge 1$, we show that with high probability, the graph becomes rigid in $\mathbb R^d$ at the very moment its minimum degree becomes $d$, and it becomes globally rigid in $\mathbb R^d$ at the very moment its minimum degree becomes $d+1$.

The threshold for stacked triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A \emph{stacked triangulation} of a $d$-simplex $\mathbf{o}=\{1,\ldots,d+1\}$ ($d\geq 2$) is a triangulation obtained by repeatedly subdividing a $d$-simplex into $d+1$ new ones via a new vertex (the case $d=2$ is known as an Appolonian network). We study the occurrence of such a triangulation in the Linial--Meshulam model, i.e., for which $p$ does the random simplicial complex $Y\sim \mathcal{Y}_d(n,p)$ contain the faces of a stacked triangulation of the $d$-simplex $\mathbf{o}$, with its internal vertices labeled in $[n]$. In the language of bootstrap percolation in hypergraphs, it pertains to the threshold for $K_{d+2}^{d+1}$, the $(d+1)$-uniform clique on $d+2$ vertices. Our main result identifies this threshold for every $d\geq 2$, showing it is asymptotically $(α_d n)^{-1/d}$, where $α_d$ is the growth rate of the Fuss--Catalan numbers of order $d$. The proof hinges on a second moment argument in the supercritical regime, and on Kalai's algebraic shifting in the subcritical regime.

Noise sensitivity of critical random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study noise sensitivity of properties of the largest components $({\cal C}_j)_{j\geq 1}$ of the random graph ${\cal G}(n,p)$ in its critical window $p=(1+λn^{-1/3})/n$. For instance, is the property "$|{\cal C}_1|$ exceeds its median size" noise sensitive? Roberts and Şengül (2018) proved that the answer to this is yes if the noise $ε$ is such that $ε\gg n^{-1/6}$, and conjectured the correct threshold is $ε\gg n^{-1/3}$. That is, the threshold for sensitivity should coincide with the critical window---as shown for the existence of long cycles by the first author and Steif (2015). We prove that for $ε\gg n^{-1/3}$ the pair of vectors $ n^{-2/3}(|{\cal C}_j|)_{j\geq 1}$ before and after the noise converges in distribution to a pair of i.i.d. random variables, whereas for $ε\ll n^{-1/3}$ the $\ell^2$-distance between the two goes to 0 in probability. This confirms the above conjecture: any Boolean function of the vector of rescaled component sizes is sensitive in the former case and stable in the latter. We also look at the effect of the noise on the metric space $n^{-1/3}({\cal C}_j)_{j\geq 1}$. E.g., for $ε\geq n^{-1/3+o(1)}$, we show that the joint law of the spaces before and after the noise converges to a product measure, implying noise sensitivity of any property seen in the limit, e.g., "the diameter of ${\cal C}_1$ exceeds its median."

Minimum weight disk triangulations and fillings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the minimum total weight of a disk triangulation using vertices out of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, where the boundary is the triangle $(123)$ and the $\binom{n}3$ triangles have independent weights, e.g. $\mathrm{Exp}(1)$ or $\mathrm{U}(0,1)$. We show that for explicit constants $c_1,c_2>0$, this minimum is $c_1 \frac{\log n}{\sqrt n} + c_2 \frac{\log\log n}{\sqrt n} + \frac{Y_n}{\sqrt n}$ where the random variable $Y_n$ is tight, and it is attained by a triangulation that consists of $\frac14\log n + O_P(\sqrt{\log n}) $ vertices. Moreover, for disk triangulations that are canonical, in that no inner triangle contains all but $O(1)$ of the vertices, the minimum weight has the above form with the law of $Y_n$ converging weakly to a shifted~Gumbel. In addition, we prove that, with high probability, the minimum weights of a homological filling and a homotopical filling of the cycle $(123)$ are both attained by the minimum weight disk triangulation.

Expander Graphs -- Both Local and Global
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite graph. For $v\in V$ we denote by $G_v$ the subgraph of $G$ that is induced by $v$'s neighbor set. We say that $G$ is $(a,b)$-regular for $a>b>0$ integers, if $G$ is $a$-regular and $G_v$ is $b$-regular for every $v\in V$. Recent advances in PCP theory call for the construction of infinitely many $(a,b)$-regular expander graphs $G$ that are expanders also locally. Namely, all the graphs $\{G_v|v\in V\}$ should be expanders as well. While random regular graphs are expanders with high probability, they almost surely fail to expand locally. Here we construct two families of $(a,b)$-regular graphs that expand both locally and globally. We also analyze the possible local and global spectral gaps of $(a,b)$-regular graphs. In addition, we examine our constructions vis-a-vis properties which are considered characteristic of high-dimensional expanders.

On simple connectivity of random 2-complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The fundamental group of the $2$-dimensional Linial-Meshulam random simplicial complex $Y_2(n,p)$ was first studied by Babson, Hoffman and Kahle. They proved that the threshold probability for simple connectivity of $Y_2(n,p)$ is about $p\approx n^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we show that this threshold probability is at most $p\le (γn)^{-1/2}$, where $γ= 4^4/3^3$, and conjecture that this threshold is sharp. In fact, we show that $p=(γn)^{-1/2}$ is a sharp threshold probability for the stronger property that every cycle of length $3$ is the boundary of a subcomplex of $Y_2(n,p)$ that is homeomorphic to a disk. Our proof uses the Poisson paradigm, and relies on a classical result of Tutte on the enumeration of planar triangulations.

Enumeration and randomized constructions of hypertrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Over thirty years ago, Kalai proved a beautiful $d$-dimensional analog of Cayley's formula for the number of $n$-vertex trees. He enumerated $d$-dimensional hypertrees weighted by the squared size of their $(d-1)$-dimensional homology group. This, however, does not answer the more basic problem of unweighted enumeration of $d$-hypertrees, which is our concern here. Our main result, Theorem 1.4, significantly improves the lower bound for the number of $d$-hypertrees. In addition, we study a random $1$-out model of $d$-complexes where every $(d-1)$-dimensional face selects a random $d$-face containing it, and show it has a negligible $d$-dimensional homology.

Random simplicial complexes - around the phase transition
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article surveys some of the work done in recent years on random simplicial complexes. We mostly consider higher-dimensional analogs of the well known phase transition in $G(n, p)$ theory that occurs at $p = \frac 1n$ . Our main objective is to provide a more streamlined and unified perspective of some of the papers in this area.
