Local limits of determinantal processes
Let $H_n$ be the row space of a signed adjacency matrix of a $C_4$-free bipartite bi-regular graph in which one part has degree $d(n)\to\infty$ and the other part has degree $k+1$ where $k\geq 1$ is a fixed integer. We show that the local limit as $n\to \infty$ of the determinantal process corresponding to the orthogonal projection on $H_n$ is a variant of a Poisson$(k)$ branching process conditioned to survive. This setup covers a wide class of determinantal processes such as uniform spanning trees, Kalai's determinantal hypertrees, hyperforests in regular cell complexes, discrete Grassmanians, incidence matroids and more, as long as their degree tends to $\infty$.

The GHP scaling limit of uniform spanning trees in high dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Brownian continuum random tree is the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prohorov scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree on high-dimensional graphs including the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$ with $d>4$, the hypercube $\{0,1\}^n$, and transitive expander graphs. Several corollaries for associated quantities are then deduced: convergence in distribution of the rescaled diameter, height and simple random walk on these uniform spanning trees to their continuum analogues on the continuum random tree.

The diameter of the uniform spanning tree of dense graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the diameter of a uniformly drawn spanning tree of a simple connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimal degree linear in $n$ is typically of order $\sqrt{n}$. A byproduct of our proof, which is of independent interest, is that on such graphs the Cheeger constant and the spectral gap are comparable.

The diameter of uniform spanning trees in high dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the diameter of a uniformly drawn spanning tree of a connected graph on $n$ vertices which satisfies certain high-dimensionality conditions typically grows like $Θ(\sqrt{n})$. In particular this result applies to expanders, finite tori $\mathbb{Z}_m^d$ of dimension $d \geq 5$, the hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$, and small perturbations thereof.

The local limit of the uniform spanning tree on dense graphs

Let $G$ be a connected graph in which almost all vertices have linear degrees and let $T$ be a uniform spanning tree of $G$. For any fixed rooted tree $F$ of height $r$ we compute the asymptotic density of vertices $v$ for which the $r$-ball around $v$ in $T$ is isomorphic to $F$. We deduce from this that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of such graphs converging to a graphon $W$, then the uniform spanning tree of $G_n$ locally converges to a multi-type branching process defined in terms of $W$. As an application, we prove that in a graph with linear minimum degree, with high probability, the density of leaves in a uniform spanning tree is at least $1/e-o(1)$, the density of vertices of degree $2$ is at most $1/e+o(1)$ and the density of vertices of degree $k\geq 3$ is at most ${(k-2)^{k-2} \over (k-1)! e^{k-2}} + o(1)$. These bounds are sharp.

Slightly subcritical hypercube percolation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study bond percolation on the hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$ in the slightly subcritical regime where $p = p_c (1-\varepsilon_m)$ and $\varepsilon_m = o(1)$ but $\varepsilon_m \gg 2^{-m/3}$ and study the clusters of largest volume and diameter. We establish that with high probability the largest component has cardinality $Θ\left(\varepsilon_m^{-2} \log(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)\right)$, that the maximal diameter of all clusters is $(1+o(1)) \varepsilon_m^{-1} \log(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)$, and that the maximal mixing time of all clusters is $Θ\left(\varepsilon_m^{-3} \log^2(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)\right)$. These results hold in different levels of generality, and in particular, some of the estimates hold for various classes of graphs such as high-dimensional tori, expanders of high degree and girth, products of complete graphs, and infinite lattices in high dimensions.

Non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth have p_c < p_u and mean-field exponents
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we show that percolation on non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth has a phase of non-uniqueness, i.e., p_c < p_u. Furthermore, we show that percolation and self-avoiding walk on such graphs have mean-field critical exponents. In particular, the self-avoiding walk has positive speed.

Recurrence of planar graph limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that any distributional limit of finite planar graphs in which the degree of the root has an exponential tail is almost surely recurrent. As a corollary, we obtain that the uniform infinite planar triangulation and quadrangulation (UIPT and UIPQ) are almost surely recurrent, resolving a conjecture of Angel, Benjamini and Schramm. We also settle another related problem of Benjamini and Schramm. We show that in any bounded degree, finite planar graph the probability that the simple random walk started at a uniform random vertex avoids its initial location for T steps is at most C/log T.

Hypercube percolation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study bond percolation on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m around the critical probability p_c. It is known that if p=p_c(1+O(2^{-m/3})), then with high probability the largest connected component C_1 is of size Theta(2^{2m/3}) and that this quantity is non-concentrated. Here we show that for any sequence eps_m such that eps_m=o(1) but eps_m >> 2^{-m/3} percolation on the hypercube at p_c(1+eps_m) has |C_1| = (2+o(1)) eps_m 2^m and |C_2| = o(eps_m 2^m) with high probability, where C_2 is the second largest component. This resolves a conjecture of Borgs, Chayes, the first author, Slade and Spencer [17].

Mean-field conditions for percolation on finite graphs

Let G_n be a sequence of finite transitive graphs with vertex degree d=d(n) and |G_n|=n. Denote by p^t(v,v) the return probability after t steps of the non-backtracking random walk on G_n. We show that if p^t(v,v) has quasi-random properties, then critical bond-percolation on G_n has a scaling window of width n^{-1/3}, as it would on a random graph. A consequence of our theorems is that if G_n is a transitive expander family with girth at least (2/3 + eps) \log_{d-1} n, then the size of the largest component in p-bond-percolation with p={1 +O(n^{-1/3}) \over d-1} is roughly n^{2/3}. In particular, bond-percolation on the celebrated Ramanujan graph constructed by Lubotzky, Phillips and Sarnak has the above scaling window. This provides the first examples of quasi-random graphs behaving like random graphs with respect to critical bond-percolation.

Critical percolation on random regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the component sizes in critical independent p-bond percolation on a random d-regular graph on n vertices, where d \geq 3 is fixed and n grows. We prove mean-field behavior around the critical probability p_c=1/(d-1). In particular, we show that there is a scaling window of width n^{-1/3} around p_c in which the sizes of the largest components are roughly n^{2/3} and we describe their limiting joint distribution. We also show that for the subcritical regime, i.e. p = (1-eps(n))p_c where eps(n)=o(1) but \eps(n)n^{1/3} tends to infinity, the sizes of the largest components are concentrated around an explicit function of n and eps(n) which is of order o(n^{2/3}). In the supercritical regime, i.e. p = (1+\eps(n))p_c where eps(n)=o(1) but eps(n)n^{1/3} tends to infinity, the size of the largest component is concentrated around the value (2d/(d-2))\eps(n)n and a duality principle holds: other component sizes are distributed as in the subcritical regime.

Critical random graphs: Diameter and mixing time
Published in Annals of Probability 2008, Vol. 36, No. 4, 1267-1286 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_1$ denote the largest connected component of the critical Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(n,{\frac{1}{n}})$. We show that, typically, the diameter of $\mathcal{C}_1$ is of order $n^{1/3}$ and the mixing time of the lazy simple random walk on $\mathcal{C}_1$ is of order $n$. The latter answers a question of Benjamini, Kozma and Wormald. These results extend to clusters of size $n^{2/3}$ of $p$-bond percolation on any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph where such clusters exist, provided that $p(d-1)\le1+O(n^{-1/3})$.

Component sizes of the random graph outside the scaling window
We provide simple proofs describing the behavior of the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p) outside of the scaling window, p={1+\eps(n) \over n} where \eps(n) tends to 0, but \eps(n)n^{1/3} tends to \infty.

The critical random graph, with martingales

We give a short proof that the largest component of the random graph $G(n, 1/n)$ is of size approximately $n^{2/3}$. The proof gives explicit bounds for the probability that the ratio is very large or very small.

Colouring powers of cycles from random lists
Published in European J. of Combinatorics 25 (2004), 961-968 • View PublicationBIB
Let $C_n^k$ be the $k$-th power of a cycle on $n$ vertices (i.e. the vertices of $C_n^k$ are those of the $n$-cycle, and two vertices are connected by an edge if their distance along the cycle is at most $k$). For each vertex draw uniformly at random a subset of size $c$ from a base set $S$ of size $s=s(n)$. In this paper we solve the problem of determining the asymptotic probability of the existence of a proper colouring from the lists for all fixed values of $c,k$, and growing $n$.

Colouring complete bipartite graphs from random lists
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K_{n,n}$ be the complete bipartite graph with $n$ vertices in each side. For each vertex draw uniformly at random a list of size $k$ from a base set $S$ of size $s=s(n)$. In this paper we estimate the asymptotic probability of the existence of a proper colouring from the random lists for all fixed values of $k$ and growing $n$. We show that this property exhibits a sharp threshold for $k\geq 2$ and the location of the threshold is precisely $s(n)=2n$ for $k=2$, and approximately $s(n)=\frac{n}{2^{k-1}\ln 2}$ for $k\geq 3$.
