Proofs of Two Positivity Conjectures of Guo
We prove two positivity conjectures proposed by Guo for alternating sums and factorial ratios built from Gaussian coefficients. The first result proves the positivity of the odd $q$-super Catalan numbers \[ C_{m,n}(q)=\frac{[2m+1]![2n]!}{[m+n+1]![m]![n]!}. \] The proof uses the positivity theorem of Warnaar and Zudilin for the usual $q$-super Catalan numbers, together with two recurrences obtained from a double application of the $q$-Chu--Vandermonde summation. The second result proves Guo's conjectural strengthening of his alternating-sum positivity theorem, replacing the exponent coefficient $2r-1$ by every odd coefficient $2b-1$, $1\leq b\leq r$. Its proof combines a $q\mapsto q^{-1}$ reciprocity with a finite deletion recurrence.
Catalan number sequences and generalized action graphs
Published in Mathematics Exchange 18 (2025) 88-106 • View PublicationBIB
Action graphs emerged from work of Bergner and Hackney on category actions in the context of Reedy categories. Alvarez, Bergner, and Lopez showed that action graphs could be inductively generated without reference to category actions and have a close relationship with the sequence of Catalan numbers. These graphs were further generalized in work of Cressman, Lin, Nguyen, and Wiljanen, who showed that the Fuss-Catalan numbers have a similar relation to another set of inductively defined directed graphs. In our paper, we consider several other sequences related to the Catalan numbers, namely Catalan's triangle, $(a,b)$-Catalan numbers, internal triangles, and super Catalan numbers. We show action graphs cannot be generalized to Catalan's triangle, $(a,b)$-Catalan numbers, nor internal triangles. We also conjecture a method for constructing action graphs for the Super Catalan numbers.

$q$-Super Catalan Numbers: Combinatorial identities, Generating Functions, and Narayana Refinements
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 169, September 2025, 102911 • View PublicationBIB
We begin by deriving a number of combinatorial identities satisfied by the $q$-super Catalan numbers. In particular, we extend some of the known combinatorial identities (Touchard, Koshy, Reed Dawson) to the $q$-super Catalan numbers. Next, we introduce some $q$-convolution identities involving q-central binomial and q-Catalan numbers and derive a generating function for $q$-Catalan numbers. Then we introduce Narayana-type refinements of the super Catalan numbers. We prove algebraically the $γ$-positivity of those refinements and give a combinatorial proof in a special case through the type B analog of noncrossing partitions. Then we introduce their natural $q$-analogs, prove their $q$-$γ$-positivity and prove some identities they satisfy, generalizing identities of Kreweras and Le Jen-Shoo. Using yet another identity, we prove that these refinements are positive integer polynomials in $q$.

Super FiboCatalan Numbers and their Lucas Analogues
Catalan observed in 1874 that the numbers $S(m,n) = \frac{(2m)! (2n)!}{m! n! (m+n)!}$, now called the super Catalan numbers, are integers but there is still no known combinatorial interpretation for them in general, although interpretations have been given for the case $m=2$ and for $S(m, m+s)$ for $0 \leq s \leq 4$. In this paper, we define the super FiboCatalan numbers $S(m,n)_F = \frac{F_{2m}! F_{2n}!}{F_m! F_n! F_{m+n}!}$ and the generalized FiboCatalan numbers $J_{r,F} \frac{F_{2n}!}{F_n! F_{n+r+1}!}$ where $J_{r,F} = \frac{F_{2r+1}!}{F_r!}$. In addition, we give Lucas analogues for both of these numbers and use a result of Sagan and Tirrell to prove that the Lucas analogues are polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients which in turn proves that the super FiboCatalan numbers and the generalized FiboCatalan numbers are integers.

An Algebraic Interpretation of the Super Catalan Numbers
We extend the notion of polynomial integration over an arbitrary circle $C$ in the Euclidean geometry over general fields $\mathbb F$ of characteristic zero as a normalized $\mathbb F$-linear functional on $\mathbb{F}\left[α_1, α_2\right]$ that takes polynomials that evaluate to zero on $C$ to zero and is $\mathrm{SO}(2,\mathbb{F})$-invariant. This allows us to not only build a purely algebraic integration theory in an elementary way, but also give the super Catalan numbers $$S(m,n) = \frac{(2m)!(2n)!}{m!n!(m+n)!}$$ an algebraic interpretation in terms of values of this algebraic integral over some circle applied to the monomials $α_1^{2m}α_2^{2n}$.

Factors of Alternating Convolution of the Gessel Numbers
The Gessel number $P(n,r)$ is the number of the paths in plane with $(1, 0)$ and $(0,1)$ steps from $(0,0)$ to $(n+r, n+r-1)$ that never touch any of the points from the set $\{(x,x)\in \mathbb{Z}^2: x\geq r\}$. We show that there is a close relationship between the Gessel numbers $P(n,r)$ and the super Catalan numbers $S(n,r)$. By using new sums, we prove that an alternating convolution of the Gessel numbers $P(n,r)$ is always divisible by \frac{1}{2}$S(n,r)$.

On a New Alternating Convolution Formula for the Super Catalan Numbers
Published in Romanian Mathematical Magazine, 15 march 2021 • Search Publication
We present a new alternating convolution formula for the super Catalan numbers which arises as a generalization of two known binomial identities. We prove a generalization of this formula by using auxiliary sums, recurrence relations, and induction. By using a new method, we prove one interesting divisibility result with super Catalan numbers.

Super Catalan Numbers and Fourier Summation over Finite Fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study polynomial summation over unit circles over finite fields of odd characteristic, obtaining a purely algebraic integration theory without recourse to infinite procedures. There are nonetheless strong parallels to classical integration theory over a circle, and we show that the super Catalan numbers and closely related rational numbers lie at the heart of both theories. This gives a uniform analytic meaning to these up to now somewhat mysterious numbers. Our derivation utilises the three-fold symmetry of chromogeometry between Euclidean and relativistic geometries, and we find that the Fourier summation formulas we derive in these two different settings are closely connected.

Compatible Cycles and CHY Integrals
Published • View PublicationBIB
The CHY construction naturally associates a vector in $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$ to every 2-regular graph with $n$ vertices. Partial amplitudes in the biadjoint scalar theory are given by the inner product of vectors associated with a pair of cycles. In this work we study the problem of extending the computation to pairs of arbitrary 2-regular graphs. This requires the construction of compatible cycles, i.e. cycles such that their union with a 2-regular graph admits a Hamiltonian decomposition. We prove that there are at least $(n-2)!/4$ such cycles for any 2-regular graph. We also find a connection to breakpoint graphs when the graph only has double edges. We end with a comparison of the lower bound on the number of randomly selected cycles needed to generate a basis of $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$, using the super Catalan numbers, and our lower bound for compatible cycles.

Eulerian summation operators and a remarkable family of polynomials
We give several families of polynomials which are related by Eulerian summation operators. They satisfy interesting combinatorial properties like being integer-valued at integral points. This involves nearby-symmetries and a recursion for the values at half-integral points. We also obtain identities for super Catalan numbers.

Sums of squares of Krawtchouk polynomials, Catalan numbers, and some algebras over the Boolean lattice
Writing the values of Krawtchouk polynomials as matrices, we consider weighted partial sums along columns. For the general case, we find an identity that, in the symmetric case yields a formula for such partial sums. Complete sums of squares along columns involve "Super Catalan" numbers. We look as well for particular values (matrix entries) involving the Catalan numbers. Properties considered and developed in this work are applied to calculations of various dimensions that describe the structure of some *-algebras over the Boolean lattice based on inclusion/superset relations expressed algebraically using zeons [zero-square elements].

The Super Patalan Numbers
Published in J. Integer Seq. 18 (2015), Article 15.3.3 • Search Publication
We introduce the super Patalan numbers, a generalization of the super Catalan numbers in the sense of Gessel, and prove a number of properties analagous to those of the super Catalan numbers. The super Patalan numbers generalize the super Catalan numbers similarly to how the Patalan numbers generalize the Catalan numbers.

The Reciprocal Pascal Matrix
The reciprocal Pascal matrix is the Hadamard inverse of the symmetric Pascal matrix. We show that the ordinary matrix inverse of the reciprocal Pascal matrix has integer elements. The proof uses two factorizations of the matrix of super Catalan numbers.

A weighted interpretation for the super Catalan numbers
The super Catalan numbers $T(m,n)=(2m)!(2n)!/2m!n!(m+n)!$ are integers which generalize the Catalan numbers. With the exception of a few values of $m$, no combinatorial interpretation in known for $T(m,n)$. We give a weighted interpretation for $T(m,n)$ and develop a technique that converts this weighted interpretation into a conventional combinatorial interpretation in the case $m=2$.

On super Catalan polynomials
We present a $q$-analog of the super Catalan number $(2m)!(2n)!/2m!n!(m+n)!$, which also generalizes the $q$-Catalan numbers $c_n(λ)$, due to Fürlinger and Hofbauer, for $λ=0$ and $λ=1$. We give a combinatorial interpretation for this analog when $m=2$.

A LL-lattice reformulation of arithmetree over planar rooted trees. Part II
We continue our reformulation of free dendriform algebras, dealing this time with the free dendriform trialgebra generated be Y over planar rooted trees. We propose a 'deformation' of a vectorial coding used in Part I, giving a LL-lattice on rooted planar trees according to the terminology of A. Blass and B. E. Sagan. The three main operations on trees become explicit, giving thus a complementary approach to a very recent work of P. palacios and M. Ronco. Our parenthesis framework allows a more tractable reformulation to explore the properties of the underlying lattice describing operations and simplify a proof of a fundamental theorem related to arithmetics over trees, the so-called arithmetree. Arithmetree is then viewed as a noncommutative extention of (N,+,x), the integers being played by the corollas. We give also two representations of the super Catalan numbers or Schroder numbers.
