The rank-nullity ring of a matroid
We introduce the rank-nullity ring of a matroid $M$, which is a subring of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. This subring contains the tautological Chern classes of $M$, a fact we deduce from a highly symmetric formula for these classes. When the matroid $M$ is a uniform matroid, the rank-nullity ring coincides with the subring of $S_n$-invariants of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. In this case, we compute its Hilbert function explicitly and provide a Gröbner basis for the ideal of relations among its generators.

The natural matroid of an integer polymatroid was introduced to show that a simple construction of integer polymatroids from matroids yields all integer polymatroids. As we illustrate, the natural matroid can shed much more light on integer polymatroids. We focus on characterizations of integer polymatroids using their bases, their circuits, and their cyclic flats along with the rank of each cyclic flat and each element; we offer some new characterizations and insights into known characterizations.
The excluded minors for lattice path polymatroids

We find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of lattice path polymatroids as a subclass of the minor-closed class of Boolean polymatroids. Like lattice path matroids and Boolean polymatroids, there are infinitely many excluded minors, but they fall into a small number of easily-described types.
Reciprocal maximum likelihood degrees of diagonal linear concentration models
We show that the reciprocal maximal likelihood degree (rmld) of a diagonal linear concentration model $\mathcal L \subseteq \mathbb{C}^n$ of dimension $r$ is equal to $(-2)^rχ_M( \textstyle\frac{1}{2})$, where $χ_M$ is the characteristic polynomial of the matroid $M$ associated to $\mathcal L$. In particular, this establishes the polynomiality of the rmld for general diagonal linear concentration models, positively answering a question of Sturmfels, Timme, and Zwiernik.

One characterization of binary matroids is that the symmetric difference of every pair of intersecting circuits is a disjoint union of circuits. This paper considers circuit-difference matroids, that is, those matroids in which the symmetric difference of every pair of intersecting circuits is a single circuit. Our main result shows that a connected regular matroid is circuit-difference if and only if it contains no pair of skew circuits. Using a result of Pfeil, this enables us to explicitly determine all regular circuit-difference matroids. The class of circuit-difference matroids is not closed under minors, but it is closed under series minors. We characterize the infinitely many excluded series minors for the class.
Matroids with a cyclic arrangement of circuits and cocircuits

For all positive integers $t$ exceeding one, a matroid has the cyclic $(t-1,t)$-property if its ground set has a cyclic ordering $σ$ such that every set of $t-1$ consecutive elements in $σ$ is contained in a $t$-element circuit and $t$-element cocircuit. We show that if $M$ has the cyclic $(t-1,t)$-property and $|E(M)|$ is sufficiently large, then these $t$-element circuits and $t$-element cocircuits are arranged in a prescribed way in $σ$, which, for odd $t$, is analogous to how 3-element circuits and cocircuits appear in wheels and whirls, and, for even $t$, is analogous to how 4-element circuits and cocircuits appear in swirls. Furthermore, we show that any appropriate concatenation $Φ$ of $σ$ is a flower. If $t$ is odd, then $Φ$ is a daisy, but if $t$ is even, then, depending on $M$, it is possible for $Φ$ to be either an anemone or a daisy.
Generalized Laminar Matroids

Nested matroids were introduced by Crapo in 1965 and have appeared frequently in the literature since then. A flat of a matroid $M$ is Hamiltonian if it has a spanning circuit. A matroid $M$ is nested if and only if its Hamiltonian flats form a chain under inclusion; $M$ is laminar if and only if, for every $1$-element independent set $X$, the Hamiltonian flats of $M$ containing $X$ form a chain under inclusion. We generalize these notions to define the classes of $k$-closure-laminar and $k$-laminar matroids. This paper focuses on structural properties of these classes noting that, while the second class is always minor-closed, the first is if and only if $k \le 3$. The main results are excluded-minor characterizations for the classes of 2-laminar and 2-closure-laminar matroids.
Laminar Matroids

A laminar family is a collection $\mathscr{A}$ of subsets of a set $E$ such that, for any two intersecting sets, one is contained in the other. For a capacity function $c$ on $\mathscr{A}$, let $\mathscr{I}$ be $\{I:|I\cap A| \leq c(A)\text{ for all $A\in\mathscr{A}$}\}$. Then $\mathscr{I}$ is the collection of independent sets of a (laminar) matroid on $E$. We present a method of compacting laminar presentations, characterize the class of laminar matroids by their excluded minors, present a way to construct all laminar matroids using basic operations, and compare the class of laminar matroids to other well-known classes of matroids.
