Characterizations of certain matroids by maximizing valuative invariants
Luis Ferroni and Alex Fink recently introduced a polytope of all unlabeled matroids of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, and they showed that the vertices of this polytope come from matroids that can be characterized by maximizing a sequence of valuative invariants. We prove that a number of the matroids that they conjectured to yield vertices indeed do (these include cycle matroids of complete graphs, projective geometries, and Dowling geometries), and we give additional examples (including truncations of cycle matroids of complete graphs, Bose-Burton geometries, and binary and free spikes with tips). We prove a special case of a conjecture of Ferroni and Fink by showing that direct sums of uniform matroids yield vertices of their polytope, and we prove a similar result for direct sums whose components are in certain restricted classes of extremal matroids.

A construction that preserves the configuration of a matroid, with applications to lattice path matroids
The configuration of a matroid $M$ is the abstract lattice of cyclic flats (flats that are unions of circuits) where we record the size and rank of each cyclic flat, but not the set. One can compute the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and stronger invariants (notably, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant), from the configuration. Given a matroid $M$ in which certain pairs of cyclic flats are non-modular, we show how to produce a matroid that is not isomorphic to $M$ but has the same configuration as $M$. We show that this construction applies to a lattice path matroid if and only if it is not a fundamental transversal matroid, and we enumerate the connected lattice path matroids on $[n]$ that are fundamental; these results imply that, asymptotically, almost no lattice path matroids are Tutte unique. We give a sufficient condition for a matroid to be determined, up to isomorphism, by its configuration. We treat constructions that yield matroids with different configurations where each matroid is determined by its configuration and all have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We also show that for any lattice $L$ other than a chain, there are non-isomorphic transversal matroids that have the same configuration and where the lattices of cyclic flats are isomorphic to $L$.

Connectivity gaps among matroids with the same enumerative invariants
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Many important enumerative invariants of a matroid can be obtained from its Tutte polynomial, and many more are determined by two stronger invariants, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant and the configuration of the matroid. We show that the same is not true of the most basic connectivity invariants. Specifically, we show that for any positive integer $n$, there are pairs of matroids that have the same configuration (and so the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant and the same Tutte polynomial) but the difference between their Tutte connectivities exceeds $n$, and likewise for vertical connectivity and branch-width. The examples that we use to show this, which we construct using an operation that we introduce, are transversal matroids that are also positroids.

A characterization of positroids, with applications to amalgams and excluded minors
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
A matroid of rank $r$ on $n$ elements is a positroid if it has a representation by an $r$ by $n$ matrix over $\mathbb{R}$, each $r$ by $r$ submatrix of which has nonnegative determinant. Earlier characterizations of connected positroids and results about direct sums of positroids involve connected flats and non-crossing partitions. We prove another characterization of positroids of a similar flavor and give some applications of the characterization. We show that if $M$ and $N$ are positroids and $E(M)\cap E(N)$ is an independent set and a set of clones in both $M$ and $N$, then the free amalgam of $M$ and $N$ is a positroid, and we prove a second result of that type. Also, we identify several multi-parameter infinite families of excluded minors for the class of positroids.

The natural matroid of an integer polymatroid
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
The natural matroid of an integer polymatroid was introduced to show that a simple construction of integer polymatroids from matroids yields all integer polymatroids. As we illustrate, the natural matroid can shed much more light on integer polymatroids. We focus on characterizations of integer polymatroids using their bases, their circuits, and their cyclic flats along with the rank of each cyclic flat and each element; we offer some new characterizations and insights into known characterizations.

The excluded minors for three classes of 2-polymatroids having special types of natural matroids
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
If $\mathcal{C}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids, the class $\mathcal{C}'$ of integer polymatroids whose natural matroids are in $\mathcal{C}$ is also minor closed, as is the class $\mathcal{C}'_k$ of $k$-polymatroids in $\mathcal{C}'$. We find the excluded minors for $\mathcal{C}'_2$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is (i) the class of binary matroids, (ii) the class of matroids with no $M(K_4)$-minor, and, combining those, (iii) the class of matroids whose connected components are cycle matroids of series-parallel networks. In each case the class $\mathcal{C}$ has finitely many excluded minors, but that is true of $\mathcal{C}'_2$ only in case (ii). We also introduce the $k$-natural matroid, a variant of the natural matroid for a $k$-polymatroid, and use it to prove that these classes of 2-polymatroids are closed under 2-duality.

Matroids with different configurations and the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
From the configuration of a matroid (which records the size and rank of the cyclic flats and the containments among them, but not the sets), one can compute several much-studied matroid invariants, including the Tutte polynomial and a newer, stronger invariant, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. To gauge how much additional information the configuration contains compared to these invariants, it is of interest to have methods for constructing matroids with different configurations but the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We offer several such constructions along with tools for developing more.

The free $m$-cone of a matroid and its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
For a matroid $M$, its configuration determines its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. Few examples are known of pairs of matroids with the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant but different configurations. In order to produce new examples, we introduce the free $m$-cone $Q_m(M)$ of a loopless matroid $M$, where $m$ is a positive integer. We show that the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of $M$ determines the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of $Q_m(M)$, and that the configuration of $Q_m(M)$ determines $M$; so if $M$ and $N$ are nonisomorphic and have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant, then $Q_m(M)$ and $Q_m(N)$ have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant but different configurations. We prove analogous results for several variants of the free $m$-cone. We also define a new matroid invariant of $M$, and show that it determines the Tutte polynomial of $Q_m(M)$.

Decomposable polymatroids and connections with graph coloring
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce ideas that complement the many known connections between polymatroids and graph coloring. Given a hypergraph that satisfies certain conditions, we construct polymatroids, given as rank functions, that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids, and for which the minimum number of matroids required in such sums is the chromatic number of the line graph of the hypergraph. This result motivates introducing chromatic numbers and chromatic polynomials for polymatroids. We show that the chromatic polynomial of any 2-polymatroid is a rational multiple of the chromatic polynomial of some graph. We also find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of polymatroids that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids that form a chain of quotients.

The $\mathcal{G}$-invariant and catenary data of a matroid
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
The catenary data of a matroid $M$ of rank $r$ on $n$ elements is the vector $(ν(M;a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_r))$, indexed by compositions $(a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_r)$, where $a_0 \geq 0$,\, $a_i > 0$ for $i \geq 1$, and $a_0+ a_1 + \cdots + a_r = n$, with the coordinate $ν(M;a_0,a_1, \ldots,a_r)$ equal to the number of maximal chains or flags $(X_0,X_1, \ldots,X_r)$ of flats or closed sets such that $X_i$ has rank $i$,\, $|X_0| = a_0$, and $|X_i - X_{i-1}| = a_i$. We show that the catenary data of $M$ contains the same information about $M$ as its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant, which was defined by H. Derksen [\emph{J.\ Algebr.\ Combin.}\ 30 (2009) 43--86]. The Tutte polynomial is a specialization of the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We show that many known results for the Tutte polynomial have analogs for the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. In particular, we show that for many matroid constructions, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of the construction can be calculated from the $\mathcal{G}$-invariants of the constituents and that the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of a matroid can be calculated from its size, the isomorphism class of the lattice of cyclic flats with lattice elements labeled by the rank and size of the underlying set. We also show that the number of flats and cyclic flats of a given rank and size can be derived from the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant, that the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of $M$ is reconstructible from the deck of $\mathcal{G}$-invariants of restrictions of $M$ to its copoints, and that, apart from free extensions and coextensions, one can detect whether a matroid is a free product from its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.

Lattices related to extensions of presentations of transversal matroids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For a presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of a transversal matroid $M$, we study the set $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ of single-element transversal extensions of $M$ that have presentations that extend $\mathcal{A}$; we order these extensions by the weak order. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is a distributive lattice, and that each finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ for some presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of some transversal matroid $M$. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}$, for any two presentations $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ of $M$, is a sublattice of both $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ and $T_{\mathcal{B}}$. We prove sharp upper bounds on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}|$ for presentations $\mathcal{A}$ of rank less than $r(M)$ in the order on presentations; we also give a sharp upper bound on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}|$. The main tool we introduce to study $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is the lattice $L_{\mathcal{A}}$ of closed sets of a certain closure operator on the lattice of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,r(M)\}$.

An infinite family of excluded minors for strong base-orderability
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a conjecture of Ingleton on excluded minors for base-orderability, and, extending a result he stated, we prove that infinitely many of the matroids that he identified are excluded minors for base-orderability, as well as for the class of gammoids. We prove that a paving matroid is base-orderable if and only if it has no minor that is isomorphic to the cycle matroid of the complete graph on four vertices. For each k that is at least 2, we define the property of k-base-orderability, which lies strictly between base-orderability and strong base-orderability, and we show that k-base-orderable matroids form what Ingleton called a complete class. By generalizing an example of Ingleton, we construct a set of matroids, each of which is an excluded minor for k-base-orderability, but is (k-1)-base-orderable; the union of these sets, over all k, is an infinite set of base-orderable excluded minors for strong base-orderability.

Semidirect sums of matroids
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
For matroids M and N on disjoint sets S and T, a semidirect sum of M and N is a matroid K on the union of S and T that, like the direct sum and the free product, has the restriction of K to S equal to M and the contraction of K to T equal to N. We abstract a matrix construction to get a general matroid construction: the matroid union of any rank-preserving extension of M on the union of S and T with the direct sum of N and the rank-0 matroid on S is a semidirect sum of M and N. We study principal sums in depth; these are such matroid unions where the extension of M has each element of T added either as a loop or freely on a fixed flat of M. A second construction of semidirect sums, defined by a Higgs lift, also specializes to principal sums. We also explore what can be deduced if M and N, or certain of their semidirect sums, are transversal or fundamental transversal matroids.

Sparse paving matroids, basis-exchange properties, and cyclic flats
We provide evidence for five long-standing, basis-exchange conjectures for matroids by proving them for the enormous class of sparse paving matroids. We also explore the role that these matroids may play in the following problem: as a function of the size of the ground set, what is the greatest number of cyclic flats that a matroid can have?
Characterizations of transversal and fundamental transversal matroids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
A result of Mason, as refined by Ingleton, characterizes transversal matroids as the matroids that satisfy a set of inequalities that relate the ranks of intersections and unions of nonempty sets of cyclic flats. We prove counterparts, for fundamental transversal matroids, of this and other characterizations of transversal matroids. In particular, we show that fundamental transversal matroids are precisely the matroids that yield equality in Mason's inequalities and we deduce a characterization of fundamental transversal matroids due to Brylawski from this simpler characterization.

A construction of infinite sets of intertwines for pairs of matroids
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
An intertwine of a pair of matroids is a matroid such that it, but none of its proper minors, has minors that are isomorphic to each matroid in the pair. For pairs for which neither matroid can be obtained, up to isomorphism, from the other by taking free extensions, free coextensions, and minors, we construct a family of rank-k intertwines for each sufficiently large integer k. We also treat some properties of these intertwines.

A Note on the Sticky Matroid Conjecture
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
A matroid is sticky if any two of its extensions by disjoint sets can be glued together along the common restriction (that is, they have an amalgam). The sticky matroid conjecture asserts that a matroid is sticky if and only if it is modular. Poljak and Turzik proved that no rank-3 matroid having two disjoint lines is sticky. We show that, for r at least 3, no rank-r matroid having two disjoint hyperplanes is sticky. These and earlier results show that the sticky matroid conjecture for finite matroids would follow from a positive resolution of the rank-4 case of a conjecture of Kantor.

Splicing Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a natural variant of matroid amalgams. For matroids M(A) and N(B) such that M/(A-B)=N(B-A), we define a splice of M and N to be a matroid L on the union of A and B with L(B-A)=M and L/(A-B)=N. We show that splices exist for each such pair of matroids M and N; furthermore, there is a freest splice of M and N, which we call the free splice. We characterize when a matroid L(E) is the free splice of L\U and L/V for subsets U and V of E. We study minors of free splices and the interaction between free splice and several other matroid operations. Although free splice is not an associative operation, we prove a weakened counterpart of associativity that holds in general and we characterize the triples for which associativity holds. We also study free splice as it relates to various classes of matroids.

Transversal Lattices
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
A flat of a matroid is cyclic if it is a union of circuits; such flats form a lattice under inclusion and, up to isomorphism, all lattices can be obtained this way. A lattice is a Tr-lattice if all matroids whose lattices of cyclic flats are isomorphic to it are transversal. We investigate some sufficient conditions for a lattice to be a Tr-lattice; a corollary is that distributive lattices of dimension at most two are Tr-lattices. We give a necessary condition: each element in a Tr-lattice has at most two covers. We also give constructions that produce new Tr-lattices from known Tr-lattices.
