Combinatorial K3 surfaces and the Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin family in degree 2
We introduce the notion of a combinatorial K3 surface. Those form a certain class of type III semistable K3 surfaces and are completely determined by combinatorial data called curve structures. Emphasis is put on degree $2$ combinatorial K3 surfaces, but the approach can be used to study higher degree as well. We describe elementary modifications both in terms of the curve structures as well as on the Picard groups. Together with a description of the nef cone in terms of curve structures, this provides an approach to explicitly computing the Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin family in degree $2$.
Corrigendum to the paper "The Mori fan of the Dolgachev-Nikulin-Voisin family in genus $2$'' by K. Hulek and C. Liese
In this note, we correct some of the results of \cite{HL22} concerning the number of maximal cones in the Mori fan of the Dolgachev-Nikulin-Voisin fan in genus $2$. The mistakes in the original paper concern the correct enumeration of cones. The method and the main theoretical results are not affected.
Smoothness and singularities of the perfect form and the second Voronoi compactification of ${\mathcal A}_g$
We study the cones in the first Voronoi or perfect cone decomposition of quadratic forms with respect to the question which of these cones are basic or simplicial. As a consequence we deduce that the singular locus of the moduli stack ${\mathcal A_g^{\mathop{Perf}}}$, the toroidal compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ given by this decomposition, has codimension $10$ if $g \geq 4$. Moreover we describe the non-simplicial locus in codimension $10$. We also show that the second Voronoi compactification ${\mathcal A_{g}^{\mathop{Vor}}}$ has singularities in codimension $3$ for $g\geq 5$.
Restricting linear syzygies: algebra and geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we derive geometric consequences from the presence of a long strand of linear syzygies in the minimal free resolution of a closed scheme in projective space whose homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics. These consequences are given in terms of intersections with arbitrary linear subspaces. We use our results to bound homological invariants of some well-known projective varieties, to give a combinatorial characterization of quadratic monomial ideals with a long strand of linear syzygies, etc

Small schemes and varieties of minimal degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if X is any 2-regular projective scheme (in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford) then X is "small". This means that if L is a linear space and Y:= L\cap X is finite, then Y is "linearly independent" in the sense that the dimension of the linear span of Y is 1+deg Y. The converse is true and well-known for finite schemes, but false in general. The main result of this paper is that the converse, "small implies 2-regular", is also true for reduced projective schemes (algebraic sets). This is proven by means of a delicate geometric analysis, leading to a complete classification: we show that the components of a small algebraic set are varieties of minimal degree, meeting in a particularly simple way. From the classification one can show that if X is 2-regular, then so is X_{red}, and so also is the projection of X from any point of X. Our results extend the Del Pezzo-Bertini classification of varieties of minimal degree, the characterization of these as the varieties of regularity 2 by Eisenbud-Goto, and the construction of 2-regular square-free monomial ideals by Fröberg.
